Rabbi's Message

Rabbi Randi Musnitsky

On the 5th of Iyar, 5708, the Jews of Israel proclaimed their independence and set up a provisional government. For those who were alive, May 14, 1948 was a day of unparalleled joy. Tens of thousands rushed to their synagogues and offered prayers of thankfulness to God for His help in realizing this age-old dream. There was laughter, singing and dancing. Yet, beneath it all was a disquieting sense of anxiety about the future.

The succeeding 42 years have proven that the moment of complete ecstasy was temporary. To this day the problems come faster than they can be solved. Perhaps, a less determined people would have given up and abandoned this dream of a free and safe nation long ago. But we Jews by nature and experience have a tenacity that when coupled with devout faith in God has helped us make it through wars, terrorism, economic disaster and every catastrophe imaginable.

Today, as anyone who has visited Israel will attest, the sand dunes of 1948 are green with produce despite the lack of water; industry flourishes; institutions of higher learning and schools multiply; scientific experimentation in medicine, agriculture and other areas abound; and every possible field of human endeavor is experienced in some form of Israeli life.

Israel. Though it is beset with monumental problems, it nevertheless remains our only hope for a homeland that is open to every Jew who wishes to live there. Despite its current exigencies, I truly believe that it will succeed beyond the wildest dreams of even its most optimistic enthusiasts. It has no other choice.

Happy 42nd birthday, Israel.

• NEW BUILDING UPDATE·

Our dream for a new Temple Emanuel is becoming more and more tangible. Our first glimpse of the building - a "footprint" - showed us the layout of the facilities and rooms. In a rendering of the site elevation, recently completed by the architects, it's easier to see what the front of the building will look like.

It has taken enormous effort from hundreds of families and individuals to bring the project forward this far. And with continued effort from everyone in the congregation, we can turn this two-dimensional drawing into a three-dimensional reality.

With each member family working together, we can make it happen.

ARZA Sabbath Friday Evening, May 4, 1990 at 8:30 P.M.

Please join us at ARZA Sabbath on Friday evening, May 4 at 8:30 P.M. Our guest will be Deborah Siegel, Assistant Director of the Association of Reform Zionists of America.

Ms. Siegel has always been active in the Reform Movement, beginning as a teenager when she was very involved in NFTY. She has been responsible for the resettlement of Soviet Jews, serving as the English language teacher and coordinator for Jewish Family Service. Ms. Siegel has lived in Israel both on a kibbutz and in Tel Aviv where she was on the faculty of Tel-Aviv University. At present, Ms. Siegel is on the faculty of several Universities.

There are many issues that ARZA is taking a stand on in Israel and Ms. Siegel will be updating us on these. We hope to see you all at this very enlightening Shabbat Service.

Religious School News By Rabbi Randi Musnitsky This month we introduce a new column about our

Religious School. Each month we plan to highlight programming and happenings, record accomplishments and focus our attention on students and faculty. Our school is a vital, integral part of our congregation. We, therefore, hope that you will take pride and pleasure in reading and learning about our activities and the dedicated people who so successfully make it function.

Program Spotlight

Monte Carlo Day culminated a year of "c.h.i.p.s." collecting. Each week our Hebrew 4 students participated in activities aimed at cleverly improving their Hebrew performance. Hence the word C.H.I.P.S.: Chips Help Improve Performance. Students are rewarded with chips for their improvement and penalized with debits for insufficient or wrong responses. These chips are then used to wager on games such as Climb the Pyramid, Mini-Zonk, Anagram Scrabble and Win, Lose or Draw - all played with Jewish themes and Hebrew words. The chips are tallied and can then be exchanged for delicious rewards.

The program is imaginative, fun and it works. Ask your children about it.

Religious School Simchas

Mazel tov to our teachers, Tracey Trupp (2nd Grade) and David Tishler (5th, 7th & 9th Grades) on their marriage.

Mazel tov to teacher Sherri Dissin (Hebrew 4) on her marriage to David Evans.

Soviet Resettlement As most of you know our community expects to re

settle many soviet Jews in the next year. The Jewish Family Service of Southern N.J. is coordinating this resettlement while the expenses will be met by the Federation. There is an urgent need for more people to become involved in the program.

Our Temple Board, along with the other synagogues in our area, has agreed to expand its support of the project. We will be "adopting" families and will be responsible for welcoming them, setting up their apartments and bringing them into our Temple family. We will have them for Shabbat, holiday dinners and bring them to the Temple with us. We will take them shopping and show them the "ropes." We will tutor them and drive them to medical appointments. We will do whatever is necessary to bring them into our American Jewish community.

Please start gathering household items in good condition and think of how you will want to participate in this very important project. Many Temple members have already become very involved and have found the experience exciting and rewarding. Remember, we marched in Washington and demanded that the Soviet Jews be allowed to emigrate. Now it is happening and we need everyone's help. Watch for more details in the mail or call the Temple Office.

Youth Group News By Sandy Umansky

Chocolate Crunch Bark anyone? Perhaps Passover Pops please you?? Dedicated Youth Group members devoted long hours and great effort to packing this year's Passover candy orders, all sold by our Hebrew School students. A special thank you goes out to each and everyone of you - what a mitzvah!

This year's Yom Hashoa observance became personalized for many members ofTEFTY and SHOMRIM, as each participated in the reading of the names of Holocaust victims. This solemn remembrance took place at Temple Emanuel over a 24-hour period, ending with Memorial Services at the Holocaust Memorial.

TEFTY journeyed across the river this month to the Comedy Club. This social event was an outstanding success. Chuckle, chuckle, yuk, yuk!! SHOMRIM also travelled in the "jungles" of Philadelphia, frolicking at the zoo - to help celebrate Earth Day 1990, the 20th anniversary of the 1st Earth Day. Lions, tigers and bears - Oh My!

All teenagers should look forward to up-coming events including a day at Wildwood's Wet & Wild. Drop everything and plan on joining us - it's a great way to end a great year!

Shavuot 5750 (Sivan 6)

Tuesday evening, May 29 & Wednesday, May 30,1990

Shavuot is the third of the agriculturally based festivals of the Jewish year. Following seven we~ks after Pesa~h, this harvest festival serves again to remmd the JeWIsh people of the closeness of our anc~st?rs .to the soil, and their dependence on nature for theIr livehhood. Shavuot, Pesach and Sukkot are characterized "pilgrim festivals, If for on these days Jews from all sections of Palestine broug~t thanksgiving offerings of their harvests to the Temple In

Jerusalem. Not only does Shavuot carry the message of nature,

but a spiritual dimension was later added, tha~ o~ the anniversary of the giving of the Torah on Mount Smal. In a sense, it is the spiritual and cultural aspect ofShavuot that has helped the holiday to gain its present sign~cance ..

Early nineteenth century Reform Jews, seekmg to gIve women equal status in all religious obligations, c:eated the ceremony of confirmation for both boys and gIrls on the holiday of Shavuot. Just as Moses received the torah on Sinai according to traditional legend, and subsequently passed it to each succeeding gene.r~tion of Je~s, boys and girls completing their formal rebgIOus studIes accepted the Torah on Shavuot.

While Confirmation was originally, in many Reform synagogues, a replacement for bar mitzvah and later, bat mitzvah it became an additional ceremony at the end of the tenth grade equivalent to graduation from the reli-gious school. .

The search for new religious forms has wrought radIcal changes in Confirmation ceremonies through the country. In some synagogues, the young people write their own service; in others, the day has taken on a greater importance as a time of commitment to study in the ~radition of the Jewish people. In every congregation c?nf~ation has developed into a renewed search for JeWIsh Iden-tity among young people. . .

The religious ferment generated by the bIblical prophets has entered the synagogue of today. Just as the ra~ical reformers of the nineteenth century sought new meanmgs in Judaism for their time, Shavuot has become the focus of the search for new meaning for Jewish young people today.
