THE ART OF LIVING What course shall a man pursue in life? Say little and do much, And receive everyone with a cheerful countenance.

Do not separate yourself from the community;

In a place where there are no men, trive to be a man.

Before judging your fellowman, Put yourself in his place. If I am not for myself, who will be for me? Yet, if I am for myself alone, of what

good am ·J? Who is wise? He who learns from all men.

Who is strong? He who is master over his impulses.

Who is rich? He who rejoices in whatever is his portion.

Who is honored? .. He who honors his fellowmen.

Do not say, "When I have leisure I shall study"; You may never have leisure; Therefore set a fixed t ime for the study of the Torah.

The more possessions one has, the more anxiety;

But the more Torah, the more life. Let not your learning exceed your deeds, Lest you be like a tree with many branches and few roots.

Knowledge of Torah avails much. Yet the chief purpose of its study is

the doing of God's will. The more understanding orie has, the more righteousness; The more righteousness, the more peace.

-The Talmud.

FREE INSTITUTIONS There is danger that all liberty may

be crowded out of our civilization. We must remember that religious liberty is not an end wthin itself and it cannot be departmentalized. F r e e institutions and organizations mus-t exist if we expect to have free people.-Edwin McNeill Poteat.

. SOMETHING PRACTICAL There is no doubt as to the primary

task of the Church: it can be exp'ressed in one word, and that, the word, worship. I am well aware that to thousands of people such a statement is bound to be source of irritation and annoyance. Surely, they say, the Church has something more practical to do in these days of economic stress and international rivalry and dissension! The Church has other things to do, but" if it is to do them and do them well, it must live, and its life depends on its worship. Let it ne.glect or abandon that, and it has lost its integrating principle, the source and secret of its vitality and power. The Quakers have a magnificent record in the ,field of social service, but how long would they survive as a Christian body if they gave up their meetings for worship'? These meetings are the center and core of the whole movement. As with the Quakers, so with all true churchmen, and so with us here. This church which cost so much to build and which it costs so much to maintain, was reared for the worship of God., This service is the diamond pivot around which all the agencies of the congregation revolve. And why? Because we 'realize that practical urgencies must never be permitted to blind us to the eternal verities. We serve God and our fellows, but we are careful to put the service of God first. That is something we dare not let drop! Always we must set ourselves to survey the contemporary scene from the viewpoint of eternity, and work out here what we have seen there. The "heavenly vision" must be the most fo rmative influence we know, giving to our minds perspective, to our characters stability, to our activities direction and inspiration.

R. J. McCRACKEN THE RIVERSIDE CHURCH

To all Dr. McCracken says about the ,ChuTch, we of the Synagogue can say a double Amen. -B. R. B.

* MATTATHIAS

He struck the traitor to the earth He raised his word that all might see His words rang like a trumpet blast: "All who are faithful, follow me!"

From near and far all Israel came, They rallied to his battle cry They prayed unto the God of Peace, And for their law went forth to die-

To die-and let today they live Far down the centuries flaming. See That beacon sword! Hear that strong cry "All who are faithful, follow me!"
