ApPROACHING 2.2 MILLION DOLLARS OVER 200 FAMILIES COMMITTED!

WHY DO WE NEED 100% PARTICIPATION IN OUR

HAR SINAI TEMPLE CAPITAL & ENDOWMENT CAMPAIGN?

Why is it important for everyone to participate in the Har Sinai plan to relocate and rebuild our

Temple? The opportunity to build a spiritual home for the community is mandated in Judaism.

Both the Mishkan in the desert and the first and second Temples of Jerusalem were built as a

result of the effort of the whole nation. When the first Temple was constructed in Jerusalem,

King Solomon ordered that each citizen contribute a portion because the mitzvah of providing

for the worship and celebration of Jewish festivals was seen as the responsibility of all Jews, not

just the wealthy. Everyone can contribute and the question is only: how much and over what

time period?

At Har Sinai Temple, many congregants have been involved in the organization and

implementation of this plan. And many more will be involved with the drafting of the final plans

for the relocating and rebuilding of our temple. Every gift at every level is important as people

support what they have a hand in building. All gifts will be appropriately and permanently

acknowledged in our relocated Temple. Our campaign volunteers continue to set up congregant

appointments so when they call to ask you to meet with representatives of our campaign team,

please do the mitzvah and say "yes". We are also planning a number of telethons during the

week of June 9th. Reform Judaism is both an attractive and accessible religious option in the

Delaware Valley. Help us to see that it has a fitting home in our community, so it will remain as

compelling in the future as it has been in the past. W hen you are called, please answer that call

with a commitment.

HAR SINAI TEMPLE AND THE FUTURE

OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY by Howard Bloom

An increasingly militant Islam is threatening the worldwide Jewish community daily. The

Antidefamation league reports record levels of anti-semitism throughout the world. The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians has been intensified. No longer is it possible to view this

conflict in exclusively political terms. If this were the case, it would have been solved at Taba with the more than generous terms offered by former Prime Minister Ehud Barak. It was not. Arab governments, newspapers, and curricula are adopting an even more militant and

maximalist tone. We are fearful of facing a future with the apparently implacable enmity of 300

million Arabs. The amount of negative publicity associated with Jews and Israel has not been so evident since the 1930's.

This is a time when we as Jews ought to look inward for what brings us together and for what

sustains us as a people. We must look beyond what separates us. To do this we need to re

examine the role of the synagogue in Jewish life, for it is the synagogue, which has been the most important institution for Jews since the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD. It is the

synagogue which permits Jews to celebrate our triumphs and our holy days. It is also the

synagogue, which permits us to gain solace and to mourn our tragedies. No institution has been

more instrumental in sustaining the Jewish contribution to life. And we have made a

contribution. Nowhere, outside of the state of Israel, has the Jew been able to truly feel relaxed

and at home and thus competent to articulate his or her deepest thoughts and concerns. Jewish

space and time, particularly in the Diaspora, is the preserve of our synagogues.

Therefore, when a synagogue has determined to rebuild and to relocate, this is no small decision.

It is replete with significance for both the present and the future. HaT Sinai Temple has

determined that it needs to move the congregation's home, so it can be more accessible to new members who are in search of a temple and an authentic Reform Jewish option in the Delaware Valley. Har Sinai is becoming even more attractive to a Jewish population which is in search of a haven during these troubled times. Our site in Pennington has the tremendous potential to perform these functions for both current and future membership. This is how organizations change and grow. They tend to absorb the past while they attempt to shape the future.

At no time has it been more important for our members to understand that our future as a people depends upon the way in which congregations change and adapt. After all, we are a people that has been enormously successful at making transitions and learning from and contributing to our surroundings. With the conquest of our land by the Roman Empire, the rabbis moved from the Second Temple to the synagogue and embodied the sacrificial cult in a new liturgical representation. We did not remain frozen. We adapted.

At no time has it been more important for our membership to comprehend that the very future of our people depends upon what we do today. We have the P?wer to affect our future both here and in Israel by rebuilding our own temple. We are able to strengthen our connection both to our fellow Jews and to our fellow citizens by participating in our campaign to keep the Jewish community strong by building our own institutions. We Jews have a contribution to make to our country and to the world, but to do that we have to support our own. Without a strong synagogue there will not be a strong Israel and without a strong and determined Israel, there will not be a strong American community. Israel and the American community are inextricably linked and they are mutually dependant. To sustain this link, our temple must move. Therefore, every member of our congregation is asked to participate. As we celebrate the confirmation of our children during Shavuot, we request that every member of Har Sinai Temple join with us in realizing our vision of renewal in thought, word and deed.

We have so much to be thankful for. These recent months have been absolutely spectacular in the history of our congregation. It is a reality that we will begin the process of rebuilding and rejuvenating our congregation. The monies that have been raised in this campaign have given all of us a new sense of direction and a new sense of purpose towards the spiritual development of our congregation. At this time of so much horrible news coming from the Mideast and in the wake of September the eleventh, it is reassuring to each and every one of us that our congregation is capable of meeting not only the crisis within its walls, decreased membership, but the crisis outside its walls with courage, faith and a very positive outlook. The giving of charity is a symbol of our belief that the future is going to be better than the pres(!nt. Charity itself is one of the most positive gestures than anyone can perform in one's lifetime. That is why the Jewish people have always been positive through the trials and tribulations of history imbued with a sense that the future will be much better than the present. And this congregation has shown this in these past of months.

I was honored to be present at the dedication of the peace poll at the Quaker meeting in Trenton. I was joined by the other faiths and also by the Mayor of Trenton, Doug Palmer. I also had the distinct pleasure of being a part of the community-wide Holocaust recognition services that were held at the Jewish Community Center. I also have been involved with Rabbi Wisnia in the planning for the Confirmation Retreat for next year. The last Sunday of Religious School was a happy one with a rock and roll group, The Sparklifters, performing. The kids seem to have had a beautiful time and I was happy that I was able to contribute to the final day of school.

I was very pleased with my Parallel Class for BarlBat Mitzvah parents. The last session was Saturday, May 18th, and I felt that not only did they learn, but I also learned. We spent many a session discussing the recent situation in Israel and we also had some time to discuss the philosophical underpinnings of the Jewish people. I also wrapped up my Art of Prayer series. I hope to give another similar session next year. The last Home Study session for the year will be held in June at the home of Charlotte and Herb Levin. Confirmation exercises were held May 16th for our festival of Shavuot. I worked with an amazing group of young adults this year and the fruition of these efforts was quite apparent when the lOth Grade Confmnands presented their program to our congregation. I publicly want to thank the Cantor for all of his efforts on behalf of that service for he trained the Confirmands who did the Haftorah and Torah readings beautifully. For those of you who attended the service, we dedicated our Holocaust Candelabra at that time. Cantor was very instrumental in procuring the it for our congregation; we thank the Confirmation families for the donations which made the acquisition of the Candelabra possible.

I am also miling plans with Rabbi Wisnia for our Scholar in Residence Weekend for next year. I hope next year to bring in additional scholars to discuss different aspects not only of Judaism but contemporary problems and concerns. I also want to officially announce to the congregation that the Reform Solidarity Service will be held here at Har Sinai on Friday evening, January 26, 2002.

I will soon be in consultation with our new Religious School principal, Magda Reyes. I would like to congratulate Susan Dorfman on three years of outstanding leadership of our Religious School. She made my job as a new Rabbi that much easier with her steadfast and wonderful leadership of our teachers and our students. I will personally sorely miss her presence, her smile, her charm, her wonderful way.. She truly made this period of my sojourn here absolute pleasure. I could have not wanted nor expected a better person to truly lead our students and our teachers in a spiritual odyssey towards understanding and learning the basic rubrics of our faith.

HELP OUR SUMMER MEMBERSHIP DRIUE

The summer months are traditionally the busiest months of the year for our membership committee. It is during the summer, especially before the holidays and the beginning of school, that most people join Congregations.

Last year, our Membership Committee did a wonderful job. More than 20 new families, most with young children, joined our Temple family. Each new family adds to our Temple's resources and allows us to expand the programming and services we all want.

Recruiting new members is surprisingly easy. We are very proud of the program, services and school of our Temple. Word of our soon-to-be-realized relocation is eliciting much excitement and expectation within our Jewish communities. Our satellite Hebrew programs in Yardley and Lawrenceville still provide an additional service to our young families. W henever we ask people why they haven't joined Har Sinai Temple, it's surprising how often we hear, "We've never been asked!"

The Membership Committee, with your cooperation, would appreciate the opportunity to talk to these people. We want to tell them about our exciting Temple, our programs, our activities, and our services. Cut out the coupon below and send us the needed

information at the Temple address.

Religious School Report _

by Susan Dorfman, Education Diredor

I can't believe that this moment has f inally come, but it is time for me to say goodbye to my Har Sinai family. As most of you know, in a few short months I will begin spending the majority of my time in Connecticut.

There are so many people that I wish to thank for their friendship and support over these past ten years. First and foremost I want to say thank you to Laura Reiser whose wisdom, laughter, and friendship are very special to me. Thank you to Rabbi and Cantor for your

insights and humor. Thank you to Peggy for your ever-present, willing support. T hank you to Mike. Mike, you are such a good guy; always willing to do what ever I ask of you, from hauling chairs and tables to buying "chametz" from the school children! Thank you

to John, a sweet kind soul with a ready smile. No one could ask for a nicer place to work, surrounded by genuinely nice people. We

always laughed and it's been a pleasure.

Of course, I can't forget our faculty. I would like to list them each individually, and thank each of them for their special talents, but I

will do that personally. No Congregation has a more creative, caring group of teachers than Har Sinai. I cherish the friendship of all of our teachers. The dedication that they show to our students and the loyalty that they have shown to me is wondrous. I have had many

jobs in my life, but none like this. I truly feel as if I am leaving my family. W hen I was a child, I did not like going to Religious School. I saw my teachers as exhausted, angry people who taught us because they needed to work. I was very happy to leave Religious School

behind as an unhappy, closed chapter of my childhood. My life certainly was full of twists and turns that led me to Har Sinai, the Temple

that changed my view of Jewish education forever. Yes, there are teachers that love Judaism and love children and love teaching. They

are right here at Har Sinai! Our classes ring with music and laughter, candy bar promotions to pass prayer goals, mock weddings, plays, model seders, and seder games, and seder walk-abouts, indoor Lag B'Omer picnics on the classroom floor, imaginary flights to Israel,

puppet shows, dancing, art projects, and children with shining faces who vie with each other to lead Tfillot.

I also want to thank our high school students, the Toranim and the GesherL'Kesher kids. I am very proud that we have so may dedicated

young people who have stayed connected to the Temple and committed to a Jewish way of life all the way through their senior years.

A special thank you goes to our school children. They are what it's all about. I will treasure my memories of their eagerness to learn,

and their boundless energy! It sounds cliche to say that they are the future of our people, but they are! I hope in some small way I have

helped to give them positive feelings about being Jewish. If I have, then my tenure at Har Sinai was successful.

I know that I risk forgetting a few names, but there are some people I wish to thank publicly for all their kindness and assistance. Thank -you to Judy Millner. You have been a rock of support during a year when you had many things to worry about, but you were always

willing to listen and advise. Thank you to Debbie Mannella for the wonderful book fairs and amazing Purim carnivals! Unflappable Debbie can do anything! Thank you to Abbie Katz for your willingness to help with anything and everything. Thank you to Nancy

Levine and Joan Kamens and the Religious Education Committee for all your support. Thank you to Lorell Levy for your friendship and kind offers of help. Thank you to Beth Brobst for saving me more than once, and for never losing your optimism. Thank you to Rita

Allen, Alan and Zoe Aptner, Steve Cickay, Edye Discount, Nancy Fine, Madeline and Steve Gubernick, Hope Kadesh, Ina Katz, Judy

Mann, Larry Miller, and Sue Wexler.

Lastly, I want to thank all our Moms and Dads for sending their children to me. It has been an honor.

Shalom L'Hitraot. HAVEA GREAT SUMMER!

Library News

The best part of being a librarian is reading stories to the children. The worst part is tracking down missing library books. I hate it; I really really hate it. But - it has to be done, else books that are meant for the congregation as a whole will languish, dusty and forgotten,

on someone"s shelves.

Therefore, over the next few months, I will be sending postcards or e-mails to families who, according to our records, have missing

library books. I freely admit the possibility of errors, which can occur when a library is not continually staffed. So please do not call me

if you disagree with my notice.

But - if these titles can be located on your bookshelves at home, we beg you to bring them back to us, so that others may enjoy them

too. Just inside the library door, to the right, is a small metal cabinet. Place the returned books inside it and I will, happily and gratefully, find them there.

Thanks to all who are finding and returning our missing books.

MENS CLUB Larry Miller, President

The past month has been very eventful for the Har

Sinai Men's Club. We concluded the month of

April with our f irst Congregational Brunch, co

sponsored with Sisterhood and Renaissance. Our

featured speaker was Rachel Feinmesser from the

Israeli Consulate office in Philadelphia. She gave

a very compelling talk, updating us of the recent

events occurring both in the West Bank and Israel

along with a historical time line of events during

the past years. For additional information

conc· erning events in Israel contact the Israeli

Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the internet at

mfa.gov.il. Their web site is updated daily and

contains areas for facts about Israel, government,

business, peace process, cultural, along with foreign relations.

Our baseball team, with Ariel Schwartz as the Captain, has a red hot, unbeaten winning record so

far this season. With the help of Steve Gubermck

as manager along with Cliff Bolder as assistant manager, the baseball team has a 1 7 -member

roster ... all power hitters and great fielders. The

Men's Club baseball team is looking forward to

another winning season.
