SUNDAY EVENINGS OF WONDERFUL MUSIC presents Pianist PAUL POSNAK IN CONCERT

"From Broadway To Bourbon Street" Sunday, March 9th at 7:30 pm Har Sinai Temple Sanctuary

7:30 PM $25/person (Patrons)

$15/person (General Admission)

If ever there were an artist to bridge the gap between classical music and jazz, that artist is PAUL POSNAK. First prize winner of the International J.S. Bach Competition and the Concert Artists Guild Competition and recipient of the Loeb Award (The Julliard School's highest award), he has toured throughout the United States and Europ,e, performing in major concert halls, at the White House, and at major festivals. Paul Posnak's performances as a dazzling and polished pianist have been recognized throughout the world.

Posnak's concerts present the great literature of the European classics alongside the pulsating, foot stomping works of America's most popular jazz pianist-composers: George Gershwin, Jelly Roll Morton and Thomas "Fats" Waller. Due to his perfect pitch and extraordinary

Paul Pasnak

keyboard technique, and a natural affinity for early jazz styles, he is able to recreate note-for-note many of the masterpieces of improvised rag, stomp, boogie-woogie and stride that had been virtually out of circulation since their creators "rocked the joint" with them in the Twenties and Thirties. As one reviewer put it, "He will transport you into that other world, the world in which these composers and musicians lived and worked. "

Home Hospitality Needed

We are looking for volunteers to open their homes to the visiting members of the West Point Jewish Chapel Choir over Saturday night, April 26th, before their concert here at Har Sinai on the morning of the 27th. If you and your family are interested in hosting one or more West Point cadets, please call the Rabbi at Temple.

"Sundays of Wonderful Music" coming in April:

AprilSth at 7:30 pm Giacomo Puccini's MADAMA BUTTERFLY Perfonned by Boheme Opera NJ

Boheme Opera N J will present, through selected scenes, ensembles and arias, in costume, and with sets, a narrative concert featuring the story and characterizations of Pucci ni's MADAM A BUTTERFLY. Narrated by Joseph Pucciatti, artistic director of Boheme Opera NJ, the performers will be accompanied at the piano by Sandra Milstein-Pucciatti.

April 27th at 10:00 am Brunch With The West Point Jewish Chapel Choir

The 50-year old Jewish Chapel Choir is comprised of 30 of the 55 Jewish students who today attend the Army Academy at West Point. The choir's repertoire includes traditional West Point tune, selections from "Fiddler On The Roof' and other Broadway shows, and contemporary tunes. The performance by this highly esteemed and nationally-known choir, combined with a Sunday morning Passover brunch, should make for a very entertaining morning at Temple.

"All About Purim" Sure, all of us know that Purim means costumes, greggors and noisemakers, carnivals and clowning around. But is this all there is to our celebration of Purim? Is there also a more serious side, and how might our celebration of Purim challenge us as adults?

In this month's teaching S habbat service, the rabbi will lead us in the study of some unusual Purim texts. We'll discuss the origins of some of rituals and celebrations surrounding Purim, and read some midrashim and sources that might cause us to rethink the tales of Mordechai, Esther, Ahashuerus and Haman.

Wednesday, March 12th at 8:00pm

Friday March 21 at 8:00 pm Hadassah Shabbat

Hadassah, the largest Zionist organization in the world, and one of the largest women's groups in the United States was founded in 1912 by Henrietta Szold (herself a unique and incredible individual whose story deserves to be told and celebrated!). Hadassah is more than just the name of a major medical center in Jerusalem; it is an important organization dedicated to the ideals of Judaism, Zionism, and American democracy.

On Friday, March 21, we will honor our local Hadassah chapter, which this year celebrates its 65th anniversary. We are delighted to welcome to our pulpit Sadie Greenspan, past national board member and current member of the Honorary Council. She will speak on "The Future From The Roots."

E.T.: Rabbi's Early Torah Study Group

Meetings of E.T., a weekly discussion of the weekly Torah reading, has been suspended during the winter months and will probably resume in April. Those interested will be informed in this column when spring classes will begin.

THEFT OF PURIM REVEALED © Two of the University of Dublin's most noted anthropologists, Dr. Patrick Fitzmorris and Dr. Morris Fitzpatrick, have announced the fmdings of a 20-year study: Purim is really an Irish festival. That's why it always takes place around St. Patrick's Day.

"A festival involving a McGillah has to be Irish," said Dr. Fitzmorris. "You can't convince me otherwise," Dr. Fitzpatrick added. "I have to conclude that the Jewish people have stolen the ancient Irish festival and renamed it Purim.

Originally known as O'Purim, the celebration was based on the life of an orphan colleen, Esther McGillicudy, who happened to be a kosher caterer serving royalty. Esther's uncle, Morty McGillicudy, wanted her to marry Shamus O'Haman, The Meyer of Clare.

The wedding was called off when O'Haman was jailed for watering his rum and selling it to the British Navy. But the tradition stuck and since watered rum is know as grog (no joke, folks), O'Haman became the fIrst grogger.

The claim has created an uproar in the Jewish Community. Dr. Paul Burganschweros, president of the Reform Congregation of Galway Bay, Our Lady of Perpetual Nachas, said, "We will get our holiday back." Patrick Moskowitz of the Tipperary Shul, a long way from Dublin, declined comment until he could discuss the matter further with his parliamentary representative, Lord Ian Draycup.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS ---------------- by Ann Kanarek ----------------

JEWISH HISTORY: MOMENTS &: METHoDS

Events and people in Jewish history provide examples of how Jewish values have been applied over time. As we think about Purim, I'd like to share with you an "historical moment" and a complementary activity which can be used to stimulate a holiday family discussion.

DEATH OF MORDECAI MEISEL: MARCH 13, 1601

Mordecai Meisel ( 1528- 1601) was a Jewish financier who accumulated great wealth as a result of a special privilege granted him by Rudolph II of Bohemia. The monarch allowed him to loan money using property as collateral. Meisel was particularly generous with his wealth. He put it to work in the Jewish community of Prague to expand the cemetery, build a

• hospital, a Bet Midrash (house of study), a mikvah (ritual bath house) and to pave the streets of the Jewish quarter. He also financed the building of a synagogue in 1597 which was appropriately named the Meisel Synagogue. After his death on March 13' , 1601, Meisel's wealth was confiscated on the pretext that it had been earned illegally. On his tombstone the following is inscribed: N one of his contemporaries was truly equal in deeds of charity.

TZEDAKAH: A FAMILY AcTIVITY While Tzedakah is practiced

all year long, we are reminded on Purim of a responsibility to those less fortunate. A key teaching of Judaism is Kol Yisrael Areuim Zeh Bazeh, "Every Jew is responsible for every other Jew." This is in effect what Mordecai's plea was to Esther. In times of crisis, no Jew is free from the obligation to aid fellow Jews.

Each of our classes actively collect tzedakah weekly and will decide on recipients near the end of the school year in May. As a family, research possible destinations for the tzedakah money that you have raised or your child's class has collected.

Discuss the meaning of "sending gifts" or Shalach Manot, which has its origins in the Scroll of Esther. This mitzvah may be filled by sending at least two types of foods to at least two people. These gifts usually consist of special Purim delicacies such as homemade hamantashen, almonds, wine, grapes and sums of money should the recipients be in need.

CELEBRATE

Our school will celebrate the funfilled holiday of Purim on Sunday, March 23. ALL religious school students and parents from

BOTH EARLY AND LATE SESSIONS are invited to join us in the Sanctuary at 10:00am for a "traditional" Megillah reading and Purim Shpiel by Har Sinai's "Not Yet Ready for Purim-Time Players." This will be followed by a costume parade and Purim Carnival hosted by the Temple Carnival Committee, chaired by Hope Kadesh and Nancy Levine, and Sisterhood Vice Presidents Judy Millner and Barbara Weiner. People of all ages are encouraged to attend. There will be games, activities, crafts, food and prizes. Come and celebrate Purim and help support our Religious SchooL

SUPPORT THE CANDY SALE

Each year, the Religious School sponsors a Passover Candy Sale. The Krums Passover Candy is on sale now and the Sale will end March 16. You have an opportunity to purchase your holiday candy with the form you received in your mid-month mailing or through the brochure our school children bring home in their school bags. The proceeds of this worthwhile fund raiser will go to enrich our students with special programs. On behalf of our children's education, we welcome your support.

RECENTLY WHILE CLEANING OUT © MY VERY OLD DESK .. on the ground and had a temper tantrum. I really didn't know what to do.

I came across the following letter certainly written before my time at Har Sinai and probably quite a long time ago. But it sure made me wonder whatever happened to this child. Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wicked,

Regarding your son, Haman, I am sorry to have to inform you that there has been little improvement in his behavior. While I feel he is a bright young boy, he just keeps getting into trouble.

For some reason, he is very jealous of other children in the class. I try to find opportunities to compliment Haman, but he only wants to get everything that Mordy gets. It makes him crazy that Mordy and Estie are such good friends. He keeps trying to get Estie's attention, but he pulls her pigtails, which she finds really annoying.

The other day we had tryouts for a play, and Haman wanted to be King. Ahshy got the part. Haman threw himself

4

As I am sure you can understand, it is especially difficult for me, with my daughter Vashti in the class. Haman seems to really have it in for her. That only makes my job harder.

The only one who seems to keep Haman under control is this little Zeresh girl. I have moved Haman's seat so that he will be next to her, but he wasn't happy with the move. She keeps telling him what to do. Perhaps it will help.

If you have any ideas, please let me know, I'll try anything.

Respectfully, Desperate in Shushan

P.S. I can't get Haman to take off that ridiculous looking three cornered hat when he comes to class. Can you please make sure he leaves it at home!

We have finally made progress in Har Sinai's attempt to "adopt" a family along with Limestone Baptist and Allentown Presbyterian churches. Fontella Cawley is a mother of Joseph, Vanessa and Robert (ages 9, 4, and 2) who until recently lived in a one-room motel room along the Route One corridor in Trenton. The Rabbi worked with the Exchange Club to secure a grant from the Bonner Foundation in Princeton which has enabled Fontella to rent a good home near Chambersburg. Last month she moved in and is now counting on all three congregations for some support as she tries to become more independent and self-reliant. Fontella needs many things for her new home and her children. Please look for the flyer which will describe in detail some of the things she needs to get started and donate some items if you can. We are also looking to some of the professionals in our congregation to donate some medical, dental, or career counseling for our new friends. We will also be involving them in some of our Temple functions. Please make them feel at home with us when you see them.

A special "Yellow Pages" is included for your convenience to find those particular enterprises, organizations, services, and professionals which support our fundraising efforts.

Thank you in advance for helping us to maintain the Religious School and Adult Learning Programs. If you have any questions or want to join the Membership Directory Committee, please do not hesitate to contact us (Renee at 215-493-2688 or Mary at 215-321-3496).

Planning for our Fourth Annual Race Against Hunger is in full swing. Please call me at 215-860-7641 if you want to be involved in any way. The race is now set for Sunday, April 13th at Washington Crossing State Park in Titusville, New Jersey. The 1.0 Mile Fun WalklRace starts at 10:30 AM and the 5K Race starts at 11:00. Those who have attended the races in the past know that it is a lot of fun. Please mark your calendar now.

My wife, Susan, and I have just committed to two almost impossible tasks. First, we have agreed to try to raise $6,000 by June to support the very worthwhile organization, the Leukemia Society of America. Secondly, we have decided as part of their Team In Training program to begin to train for our first marathon. We hope to complete both goals when we cross the marathon finish line in either San Francisco or Anchorage later this year. If you are concerned about finding a cure for this disease, please share your support with us by helping us meet our fund raising goal in any way you can. We can send you pledge cards if you are interested or you can pick them up in the Temple office. Thanks for your support in helping us achieve our goals.

SISTERHOOD BOOK CIRCLE Now FORMING

Do you enjoy reading? Would you like to meet and join with other Temple members and discuss the latest book you've read? Our Temple Sisterhood is starting a new program, an ongoing book Discussion Group. This is not for women only, and is open to all, singles and couples who enjoy reading and want to informally meet other Temple friends for an evening of socializing and discussion. The rabbi will lead the first group discussion.

If you are interested in joining our new Book Circle, please call the Temple. We will then set up a night and place to meet.

The Color of Water by James McBride is our first book. James McBride, a local author, grew up one of twelve siblings in the all-black housing projects of Red Hook, Brooklyn, the son of a black minister and a woman who would not admit that she was white. McBride's mother was an inspiring figure, who through sheer force of will saw her dozen children through college, and many through graduate school. McBride was an adult before he discovered the truth about his mother: the daughter of a failed itinerant Orthodox rabbi in rural Virginia, she had run away to Harlem, married a black man, and lived a secret life. In this remarkable memoir, McBride has written a powerful portrait of growing up, a meditation on race and identity, and a poignant, beautifully crafted hymn from a son to his mother.

HSTY REpORTS ----- by Adam Sgrenci ("the Secretary of Power") -----

Well, January and February certainly flew by in a jiffy. In January we attended a Philadelphia KIXX soccer game. And on February 16th, we went extreme skiing in the vast Pennsylvania Apps. Mike Klein had much to say on the subject but wishes .to remrun off the record for the month of March. Therefore, in the light of this miracle, HSTY will be organizing an outing.

We will be traveling two miles to glorious Trenton to attend a laser-light show, "Smashing Pumpkins," in the planetarium. Oh yes, there will be lots of food. As of now, the date of this celebration is March 22nd. However, in the event of a change in the event, we will change the date of the event. In other words, our people will notify your people. See you then. Amen.
