Mr Grant Gibs, who is the founder of the Hippo Roller Foundation, visited the area recently in the company of US touring companies and tourists. The the main sponsors of the hippo rollers were the touring companies and the nifty devices were handed over to the Kgautšwane community during a ceremony that took place at Matshiresane. More than 80 of the water carriers were brought by the Americans. Mr Gibs told Platinum Gazette “Our hippo rollers can help the community fetch water quite effectively, even if it can only be a temporary solution to tapped water”. The local inhabitants showed their appreciation for the donation: “We are very happy that today we can make a big step forward to our target to have a population here that is equipped with water fetching facilities”, a community representative declared. Mr Roger Harding of US tour company, Collette Vacations, said about the entourage: “These are our agents who sell holdidays to our costumers, US tourists. So, if they can see what is happening here, they are more motivated to encourage people to put a small amount on their holiday budget aside for helping the communities.” About 80 litres of water can be transported in a hippo roller by means of pushing or pulling an easily removable metal roller handle. The container itself act as the “roller” when put on its side. It is quite robust with a tight spill free lid. A secondary use of the container when it is empty is to keep stuff such as flour and other foodstuffs dry in times when everything gets wet, such as during heavy rains. Is thisright?

“Loose!”, came the not entirely sober crycame from the back of a bakkie next to asports field during the past weekend.Quickly a bunch if kids, yes, smallchildren, not even approaching theirteens, jog to the sports supporter and hisfriend, selling him a cigarette, a loosedraw.A real cigarette, not a cholcolate one. They are literally ‘small’ businessmen andwomen, selling all sorts of stuff, fromoranges and chips to cigarettes. Some ofthem cannot even write properly, butknow how to count - the money. Whetherit is legal or right, nobody cares. ThePolice in the vicinity turn a blind eye.Maybe they know the circumstances. Itremains tragic.

Mnr. Daniël Morena sê: “Ek dink die ANC saldit regkry om ‘n tweederdemeerderheid tekry. Dit sal maak dat hulle beter regeer wanthulle moes uit hul foute leer”.

Me.

Mr Lucas Matemane said: “I don’t think theANC will be able to govern better with a twothirds majority vote. If they get it, things willbe the same because it will be the samepeople in charge. I think next year is the yearthe opposition parties will make an impact”.

Mnr.

Left: Ms Lorraine Maimela said: “The ANC isfailing us and it won’t be better with twothirds of the votes in the election. I think theparty needs help. If they don’t deliver, theywon’t get the votes. Service delivery is verypoor in Tubatse. The opposition parties willperhaps do better”. With her is Tshiamo.

Mr Sipho Mahumani, Ms Rosalia Mohlala and Mr Enock Mametja said: “No, the ANC will notgovern better with a two thirds majority vote. We don’t even think they can win two thirds ofthe votes. The ANC only makes promises. Where we live there is no water and no electricity. We think the DA will make an impact this time”.

Mr Victor Smart said: “No, the ANC will notdo better with more votes behind them. Theywill lose votes this time. I hope Cope willmake things allright. The ANC have toomany problems and that is why they aregoing to lose votes”.

Mr Martin Mabasa said: “I think the ANC canget two thirds of the votes next year. I don’tknow if it will change anything. I think theycan get the votes provided that they deliver. Ifthey cannot, the DA might have a goodchance to get more votes. Competition isgood for the ANC because then they will workharder to deliver”.

Mr Bayron Ramphadi said: “Ja, the ANC willget two thirds of the votes. A lot of thingshappened under the ANC. A lot of thingschanged. They deliver good services and Ithink with more votes they can do evenbetter”.

The ANC will aim to get two thirds of the votesin next year’s general election. This was themessage President Jacob Zuma delivered atthe launch of the Gauteng election campaignlast weekend. The DA’s Helen Zille reacted saying: “That isabsolutely wrong in a constitutional democracybecause it gives a party the right to mess withthe Constitution, and we think that is entirelyunhealthy”. She added that it is good if thegoverning party and the opposition are roughlythe same strength as it will keep the one inoffice on its toes to deliver as they could easilybe voted out the next time.Zuma’s comments came after the DA set theirtarget on claiming a majority vote in Gautengnext year.At the launch of the campaign Zuma called onANC volunteers to assist them to get themajority vote they are aiming for, dismissingthe DA’s ability to get votes in the province. We asked readers if they think the ANC will begoverning better with a two thirds majority votebehind them and if they think it is possible forthe party to achieve this majority vote next year.

Mr Anton Hlatswayo said: “No, the ANC hashad a lot of chances. They will not do betterwith more votes. Now is the chance to votefor other parties to see if they can do betterwith delivering services”.

Mr Paul Mokoena said: “A two third majorityvote for the ANC must be prevented. I’llsupport the DA to stop them. Two thirds ofthe votes will not make the government anybetter. They always do things they shouldnot. They’ve already pushed for that Info Billthat will affect journalists. What will happen ifthey get two thirds of the vote?”

Mr Edward Kwashirai said: “I am a foreigner,so I am not able to say much. I think that ifthe ANC remains the leaders things will befine”.

Mr Themba Hlatswayo said: “I think the DAshould win next year. The ANC will not dobetter with two thirds of the votes. They justgive us promises”.

Mr Richard Machipa said: “It is no longerpossible for the ANC to get a two thirdsmajority. They will not be better. We need toboost the DA with votes as we need a strongopposition party”.

Mr Sakie Kgwedi said: “The ANC should notget a two third majority. The party MsRamphele is involved with can maybe dowell”.

Me. Drieka Jacobs sê: “Nee, die ANC salglad nie beter wees met ‘ntweederdemeerderheid stem nie. Die DA isreg dat ‘n tweederdemeerderheid ongesondis”.

Mnr. Leon Visser sê: “Ek dink die ANC salhulle mag misbruik indien hulle ‘ntweederdemeerderheid kry. Dan sal daarmaklik oor regte gestoomroller word”.

Mr Ezekiel Lesinya said: “This is not the firsttime the ANC is making promises to us. Theydeliver lip service. Most people still wait forwater, electricity and roads. Sekopungvillage is an example of that. Also MountainView in Praktiseer. There is no water and noelectricity. I think the ANC needs a strongopposition party like the DA. Then thepressure from the opposition will make theANC afraid and they will start delivering”.

Right: Ms RosalingMashoeng said: “Idon’t think the ANCis going to take itnext year. We arestruggling whilewe’ve been votingANC. Maybe the DAcan now take abigger vote andmake things better”.With her is Katlegoand Paballo.

Above: Mr DuumbaMojela said: “Thereare still things thatneeds to be done, but I have faith in theANC. They can offera lot. Although we’venot yet experienceddemocracy as weshould, the ANC canpush for it. The DA isjust after publicity.Maybe we canquestion theleadership of theANC, but not theANC itself”.
