The Peugeot 3008 diesel hybrid, isdue to make its appearance inPeugeot dealer showrooms inFebruary, where prospectivecustomers will be able to inspect it
and arrange a test drive if they areinterested. The 3008 is unique inthat it is the world’s first dieselelectric hybrid. If interested theycan place their order, but the car
PEUGEOT 3008 HYBRID will not be available for deliveryuntil April.
Power is provided by Peugeot’shighly respected 2.0 HDi dieselengine. It delivers 120 kW and drivesthe front wheels. There is also a 27kW electric traction motor driving therear wheels. The electric motor isactive at lower speeds, providesadditional power when starting andacts as a generator on decelerationand braking, to top up the tractionbatteries. Taken together the diesel +electric combination provides 147 kW,which gives a combined cycle fuelconsumption of 74 mpg (3.8 lt/100km) with exhaust emissions of just 99gm/km, when equipped with 17 inch
diameter wheels. The higherspecification model, fitted with 18inch diameter wheels as standard, hasemissions of 108 gm/km. Both allowthe 3008 Hybrid to fall into Irish roadtax band A, with a current annualcharge of Euro 160. Power istransmitted through a superbelectronically controlled, six speedautomatic/manual gearbox. AutomaticStop/Start is fitted as standard.
Prices start at €36,995 plusdelivery and associated charges.Service intervals are the same as forconventionally powered 3008 modelsat 30,000 km (18,000 miles)/2 years.The batteries and hybrid powertraincome with a five year guarantee.

The test programme for this car was significantly different to most of the other cars I deal with. There was verylittle city and suburban driving, but a lot of long distance travelling. On the first day there was the usual cityand suburban driving around Dublin city and county. On the second day we headed up to Belfast, where wetook the Stena Line ferry to the new terminal in Cairn Ryan, before continuing through Scotland and northern
England to Gateshead. We spent a few days in Gateshead, before returning via Cairn Ryan and Belfast to Dublin.motorways. This smooth, silent and relaxedperformance, is also greatly assisted by thesmooth and positive gearchange.
Today's roads, both here at home inIreland and in England and Scotland, are in apoor condition, with numerous potholes, bothlarge and small, all over the place. While thesuspension gives a smooth and comfortableride, with good roadholding, it cannot beexpected to smooth out all these numeroussurface irregularities. Have local authoritiesforgotten, that road tax was introduced togive them the money to build and maintainroads? Whatever about building them,MAINTENANCE seems to be something theyhave decided to completely abandon. Theyseem to ignore the fact that badlymaintained roads damage vehicles’ tyres,steering and suspensions thus causing
Out on the open road, be it motorway, dualcarriageway or simply a country road, the carwas a relaxing and effortless cruiser. The 1.6litre diesel engine, is smooth, silent andpowerful. It is also remarkably economical in itsthirst for fuel. According to the EU testingstandards, it manages a tremendous 76 mpg(3.7 lt/100 km) on the extra urban cycle, 55mpg (5.1 lt/100 km) on the urban cycle, givingan average of 67 mpg (4.2 lt/100 km) on thecombined cycle. While I didn’t actually get anopportunity to measure it myself, I was certainlyimpressed by the very slow movement of thefuel gauge needle from full towards empty. Thisfrugal use of fuel does not come at the expenseof performance. The car cruised effortlessly at100 kph (62 mph) on country roads and 120kph (74 mpg) on motorways. It also had plentyof power in reserve for overtaking, even on
accidents! Properly maintained roads areSAFER roads!
The weather was particularly cold inGateshead. On the morning these pictureswere taken, it was minus four and a halfdegrees centigrade. It took several minutesfor the car to demist the windscreen and alot longer to produce enough heat to demistthe driver’s door window. However, once thewindscreen was demisted, it was possible todrive off and the air conditioning producedenough heat to make the interior comfortablywarm and relaxing. Even after ten or somiles, there was still a layer of frost on thebonnet and the roof. Whatever about theroof, it indicates how insulating the soundabsorbing blanket on the underside of thebonnet is.

Overall I was impressedwith this latest Focus andespecially the version with the1.6 TDCi diesel engine. Mymain difficulty would be todecide which body style to gofor. Personally I prefer estate

When travelling longdistances, it is important tohave comfortable seats and acomfortable driving position.The Focus certainly providesboth. The steering wheeladjusts for both reach andheight and requires a sportsorientated 2.5 turns from lockto lock. The two front seats

laid out for comfort and easeof use whilst driving. The maininstrument display containsfour analogue instrumentsand a small, rectangulardisplay panel. The largeanalogue dial on the left is thetachometer. It has a blackbackground, white letteringand a blue needle. From4,500 rpm to 6,000 rpm themarkings are in red. Matchingit on the right is thespeedometer. It is black withwhite lettering and a blueneedle. The black backgroundalso has several warninglights which illuminate in red.Between them are two smallanalogue dials, with the fuellevel gauge on the left and theengine temperature gauge onthe right. Above them thedigital panel shows a varietyof different information,including the outside airtemperature, trip distance,total distance and otherselectable information.
The horizontal arms of thesteering wheel have switchesfor the mobile telephone andaudio installations on the leftand on the right another toselect the informationrequired for the digitalinformation panels. There is adigital information panel atthe top of the centre console.When not used for audiorelated information, it showsthe time and date. Audiorelated switches and controlsare in the large panel below.Below this are three roundselectors for the airconditioning, controlling thefan speed, temperature anddistribution. Below these arefurther buttons for thewindscreen demisting, rearwindow demisting and otherassociated functions. Thearmrest between the two frontseats contains a storage boxand is the location for thecigarette lighter. Just ahead ofit, behind the gearlever andhandbrake are twocupholders, with a small open,
adjust for reach, height andbackrest angle. The rearbench seat is similarlycomfortable, especially for theoccupants of the two outerpositions. I was surprised tofind that the centre positionwas also relativelycomfortable, with a softishcushion and adequateheadroom. ISOfix fittings, forchild safety seats, are
provided in the two outerpositions.
The rear seats are divided60/40 to facilitate the carryingof both passengers andawkward items of luggage.The seat cushion may beraised in sections and placedin a horizontal position behindthe front seat. The backrestthen drops down into theposition so vacated, to providea level extension to theluggage floor. The backrestwill also drop neatly onto thecushion, if you do not need acompletely level extension.
Normal luggage space is0.316 cubic metres. This canbe expanded to a maximum of1.101 cubic metres with bothseat backs folded down. Inaddition there is a blackpolystyrene tray under theluggage floor, that can carrysmall items. If that isinsufficient for your needs,you can carry up to 75 kg in asuitable container on the roof.Where towing is arequirement, the Focus canmanage brakedtrailers/caravans of up to2000 kg, or unbraked trailersof up to 665 kg. The car had aSpacesaver spare wheel,which is better than nothing,but is not really suitable fortowing.
The instruments anddriving controls are mainly
cars, but I must admit to beingimpressed with both thesaloon, which I thought lookedvery like a Mondeo, and thishatchback, which looked likea slightly bigger Fiesta. At theend of the day, it wouldprobably all boil down towhich I could afford.
Overall I wasimpressed with this
latest Focus andespecially the version
with the 1.6 TDCidiesel engine. My
main difficulty wouldbe to decide which
body style to go for.

There is only one way to describe this car, SUPERB! It had a longish bonnet, with a slightly sloping grille,giving it that imposing executive saloon look, especially as it was painted in a gloss black, which allhelped to make the shiny chrome surround to the grille stand out superbly. The chrome trim around theside windows and the spoked alloy wheels, all helped to give the car a very stately appearance. Inside itwas magnificently upholstered in a cream leather to the very highest standards. Then to finally set it alloff, there was beautiful, polished wood trim on the doors and the facia.
2,500 rpm, the engine can provide a topspeed of 204 kph (126 mph) with a 0-100kph acceleration time of 10.7 seconds. Thatshould be satisfactory for the vast majority oftoday’s drivers. This silky smoothperformance does not come at the expenseof fuel consumption. By EU testingstandards, the car has an Urban cycleconsumption of 36 mpg (7.8 lt/100 km),stretching to 54 mpg (5.2 lt/100 km) on theExtra urban cycle. This gives a Combinedcycle average of 45 mpg (6.2 lt/100 km).Thanks to the silent and silky smooth flow of
Power is provided by a two litre, fourcylinder, direct injection, turbocharged dieselengine, driving a six speed DSGautomatic/manual gearbox. In normal operatingconditions, power is distributed 96% to the frontwheels and 4% to the rear wheels. The audio associatedequipment was controlledfrom a panel at the top of thecentre console. This includedradio/CD, satellite navigationand other associatedfunctions. It included a largerectangular informationscreen. Located below thisunit was the dual rangeclimate control. Included inthe climate control, were thetwo heated front seatsamongst all the otherfunctions.

This Superb is a really fineexecutive car, almostbordering on luxury limousinestatus. When all the seating isrequired for passengers, it stilloffers 0.565 cubic metres ofluggage space. If only the twofront seats are needed, thenthe luggage capacity can beexpanded to an extremelyspacious 1.670 cubic metresof space. Being split 60/40 therear seat can also be folded insections to provide bothseating space and room forlong or awkward items ofluggage.
The Superb has anotherunique advantage, in that it isboth a saloon and ahatchback. You make theselection you want at anyparticular time and it can bechanged every time use useit, if that is your preference. Itis all done by a simple pressof a pad located in the loweredge of the boot lid.
If your lifestyle is such thatyou need to tow a trailer orcaravan, the Superb 4x4 canaccommodate brakedtrailers/caravans up to 2000kg in weight, or unbrakedtrailers of up to 750 kg. If youneed to carry loads in asuitable container on the roof,it can manage up to 100 kg.That 100 kg includes the
Located around the baseof the gear selector, werecontrols for the parallelparking unit, parking sensors,plus sport mode selectorposition and the location forthe manual gear selection.The driver’s door had thecontrols for the four electricwindows and the exterior rearview mirrors. Both front doorsalso had buttons for thecentral locking/unlocking. Thetwo front seats wereadjustable for reach, height,backrest angle and lumbarsupport. In addition thedriver’s seat was providedwith three memory settings.
Rear seat leg andkneeroom was very generous.The centre console did intrudea bit in the centre, but therewas still sufficient foot andkneeroom for an adultpassenger sitting in the centre
of the rear seat. As in mostcars the centre section, bothcushion and backrest wasfirmer than the two places oneither side. A passenger ofaverage height sitting there,would also find his/her headclose to the rear seating rooflights. Passengers on eitherside by contrast had soft,comfortable, well shapedseats, with plenty of leg andheadroom. The two outer seatpassengers also had theadvantage of selectable seatwarming, just like the twofront seat occupants. Theselector switches, offeringthree degrees of heating,were located in the extensionto the central console. Thisrear extension also provided adigital clock for theconvenience of rear seatpassengers. The two outerseating places were provided
the road wheels are on 17”alloy rims. The wheel providedis perfectly suitable for alloperating conditions, includingtowing.
