FCAMy initial reaction when I saw the letters FCA was that it stoodfor FREE CLOTHING ALLOWANCE ! However, when I read furtherI realised that it was the new name for the Fiat and Chryslergroup. It actually stands for :Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

In the new company Fiat appears to remain a stand alonebrand, building its own designs. Lancia has been teamed upwith Chrysler and sells certain models as Lancias in left handdrive markets and the same models as Chryslers in right handdrive markets. It will be interesting to see if Alfa Romeo isteamed up with Dodge as the performance brand of the newgroup. Hopefully Maserati will remain a stand alone luxuryhigh performance make within the group.

Amazing Opel AstraHaving set off on their routine morning commute recently, past

the popular Tragumna Beach near Skibbereen, Rory's wifeCeline, son Aaron and German exchange student Sid wereforced to abandon their 2006 Opel Astra, when it was engulfedby a wave of water. The family managed to escape to safetyby scaling the adjoining embankment and watched, as theircar was swept by the tide nearly 10 metres along the roadway.

Battered by relentless waves for over two hours, the tidethen receded and the car was left surrounded by debris.Expecting the worst Rory visited the site to assess the damage,only to discover that the car was completely dry inside, as werethe contents of the boot, which included school laptops andbooks! On closer inspection Rory was amazed to discover thatboth the engine and battery were also clean and in full workingorder and he was able to drive the car away from the site oncethe surrounding debris had been removed. On turning the keyit started immediately and Rory drove it back to his house! Theonly visual damage was the loss of the passenger door mirrorcover!

t the time that I had the RangeRover on test, I was also havingnumerous problems with mycomputer, which meant that Idid not get the opportunity togather all the technicalinformation I like for the report.

Then shortly afterwards Continental TyreCompany and the Irish Motoring WritersAssociation, kindly invited me to their annualCar of the Year awards presentation, where theRange Rover was declared to be the winner ofthe Luxury Car of the Year classification. I wasdelighted with their choice, as it would also havebeen my choice for a Luxury Car of the Yearaward. Everyone who saw or had the opportunityto travel in the Range Rover, while I had it ontest, was similarly impressed. The only drawbackit has, for older people and those of a shorterheight, is that its ground clearance is very high,which you would expect in a car of the RangeRover’s world class off-road ability, but thismakes getting in and out rather difficult forcertain people.

Talking of off-road ability, this Range Rover has anApproach angle of 31.4°, Departure angle of 30.7degrees and a Breakover angle of 28.3°. That highground clearance, already mentioned, is 220.5 mm(8.6 inches) and it has a massive 900 mm (35.4inches) wading depth. It also has Land-Rover’s

excellent Terrain Response System, simply selected bythe press of a button, to give excellent drivability in ahuge variety of driving conditions, from snow and iceto on-road motorway driving conditions. The superbautomatic eight speed gearbox also provides a relaxeddriving experience, from urban traffic congestion to thetoughest off-road conditions.

I have no doubt that most Range Rovers are drivenon-road for most of the time. The model tested waspowered by a turbocharged, V6 3.0 litre diesel engine,driving all four wheels. On-road it has a top speed of209 kph (129 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in avery sporting 7.9 seconds. That is pretty impressive for

a car of its high build and sumptuous luxury in theinterior. In spite of its high build and rather rectangularoverall shape, it still manages to to deliver 33 mpg(8.5 lt/100 km) on the EU Urban driving cycle. On theExtra urban cycle this improves to 40 mpg (7.0 lt/100km), giving an average of 37 mpg (7.5 lt/100 km) onthe Combined cycle. Exhaust emissions are said to be224 gm/km, so this large, luxury car, with its sportingperformance falls into Irish road tax band F, whichcurrently carries an annual government rip-off of€1,200.

Besides its luxurious andcomfortable interior, it also offersa towing capacity of 3,500 kg forbraked trailers/caravans and 750kg for unbraked trailers. If its0.550 cubic metres of luggagespace between the luggage floorand the underside of the rear shelf,when all seats are in use, isinsufficient for your requirements,it can also carry up to 200 kg in asuitable container mounted on theroof. Taking the large, full sizespare wheel out of its well belowthe luggage floor is anotherdifficult task, as the wheel and tyreare rather heavy and they have tobe lifted and manoeuvred into a

space that is barely bigger than thewheel and tyre.

The leather upholstered seats,front and rear are electricallyadjustable. The two front seatsadjust for reach, height andbackrest angle, with a backmassaging function as well. Theadjustments for the rear seats arelimited to backrest angle, but thereare selector buttons at the rearhatch type door to fold them whenextra luggage space is needed andto return them to a seating position

when the extra luggage space is nolonger required.

The hooded instrumentbinnacle ahead of the steeringwheel, contains two large roundanalogue dials. That on the left isthe tachometer and its centre isalso used to provide digitalwarning signs. On the left hand horizontal armof the steering wheel there arecontrols for the audio and relatedsystems like the mobile telephone,while on the right hand horizontalarm they serve the cruise controland heated steering wheel. Thescreen at the top centre of thefacia, below the two air vents,serves the satellite navigation andaudio related system. Below thisscreen there is a slot for DVDs andbuttons for other operations likethe hazard flashers. The threeround knobs below that and thebuttons between them are all partof the dual zone heating andventilating system.

The round knob on the centraltunnel below the heating andventilating controls is the gearselector. When the ignition isswitched off, it sinks down into thetunnel, and rises when the ignitionis switched on. If you select manualmode, gear changes can be madeby flicking the paddles under therim of the steering wheel. Leftpaddle for downward changes andright paddle for upward changes.

Electrically power assistedbrakes are fitted, ventilated discs atthe front and plain discs at therear. The system includes anti-lock,with emergency brake assist,electronic brakeforce distribution,hill start assist and hill decentcontrol. The steering is alsoelectrically power assisted and isgeared to give three turns fromlock to lock.

The ride and roadholding areexcellent over all types of roadsurfaces and the car is easy,comfortable and relaxing to drivein a huge variety of conditions.
