When I tested a Jaguar XF back in June 2008, I was absolutely delighted with what I found. The car waseverything I expected a Jaguar to be, smooth, refined, powerful, beautifully built and finished, as well asbeing an absolute pleasure to drive. It was also modern and up to the highest standards with itstechnology. Bearing all this in mind I approached the test of this Jaguar XF-S with a considerable degree

of enthusiasm.This top of the range diesel engine, gives the car a top speed

electronically governed to 250 kph (155 mph), while its 0-100 kphacceleration time reduces to 6.4 seconds. There are very few placeswhere you can legally exploit that top speed, but it is nice to know thatit is there. The acceleration can be used on a daily basis and when youuse it, you can feel the magnificent adrenaline rush, as the car literallyrockets forwards, smoothly, silently and ever so satisfyingly.

According to the EU testing standards, the XF-S as tested does 30mpg (9.5 lt/100 km) on the urban cycle, 51 mpg (5.5 lt/100 km) on theextra urban cycle and 42 mpg (6.8 lt/100 km) on the combined cycle.The tank was not full when I collected the car and after the first halfday’s driving, I was horrified by the amount the fuel contents indicatorhas retreated towards the empty mark. In subsequent days this samerapid movement towards empty, became a real and worrying concern.The car seemed to be consuming fuel like an alcoholic consumesintoxicating drink. This was supposed to be a diesel, yet its behaviourseemed to be more on the style of a North American huge capacitypetrol engine. Once it reached the quarter full mark, the rate ofprogress towards empty, seemed to slow down considerably. As aresult of it not being full at the start and not knowing just how muchwas left at the end, it is impossible for me to determine accurately, if itcan actually deliver 30 mpg (9.9 lt/100 km) on the urban cycle. Usingpurely guesswork, my estimation for the urban cycle, is closer to 19mpg (14.8 lt/100 km).

For the daily commute, I found myself sticking rigidly to a 60 kph(40 mph) cruising speed. The massive torque provided, meant that formost of the time the engine was running at around 1,200 rpm. Movingoff from rest, the gearbox changed down at around 2,000 rpm from 1stto 2nd and thereafter changes were made at about 1,800 rpm or less.The gearbox itself makes the required changes in a silky smoothmanner, which makes driving the car extremely effortless and relaxing.

That 2008 test car was fitted with the original 2.7 litre V6 dieselengine, mated to a six speed manual/automatic gearbox. This latesttest car had the same silky smooth six speed automatic/manualgearbox, but with a different final drive ratio and it was powered by themost powerful version of the V6 diesel, now increased in capacity to3.0 litres. As installed in this car, it delivered 202 kW and a massive600 Nm of torque. In spite of this increase in power, which naturallygives an even more effortless performance, carbon dioxide exhaustemissions have been reduced. They now stand at 179 gm/km, puttingthe car into Irish road tax band E, with a current annual tax liability, atpresent rates, of €630.

Being the S specification,this car also had a somewhatfirmer suspension. As a resultI was more conscious ofripples and other surfaceirregularities, than I rememberin the previous test car.However, it could also be anindication of how much roadsurfaces have deteriorated inthe intervening two and a halfyears. Overall, however, it wastolerable and I soon adaptedto it. eighteen inches diameter,alloy Spacesaver spare wheel.It is so narrow, it looks like awheel fitted to a car in thefirst decade of the nineteenthcentury. I just do notunderstand how something ofthis sort can provide the gripneeded for a car of the XF-S’ssize, weight and reducedperformance when fitted withthis wheel. What would thesteering grip be like on a wetor slippery road, when fittedto a front wheel? If fitted to arear wheel, what wouldtraction be like on a slipperyincline, or braking on adownhill gradient?

The test car was finishedto Portfolio standards. I lovedthe light cream seatupholstery, with mottledaluminium and figured Ebonytrim. The test car had acharcoal roof lining, whichwould not be my preferredchoice, but unlike some othercars I have encountered witha dark roof lining, it did notdepress me. I think the reasonis that the XF-S is a large car contd. on page 6

contd. from page 4 rear set were 328 mm indiameter. Again this is the sortof stopping power needed bya car offering this level ofperformance.

Currently there is a generalmove away from providingproper spare wheels andtyres. I am well aware of thethinking behind this trend. Byeliminating the spare wheelyou save weight and gainspace. This all helps in thedrive to reduce fuelconsumption and exhaustemissions. The Spacesaverspare wheel is a half way stopalong this road. The fulldistance is providing one ofthose small plug-in aircompressors and a bottle oflatex foam. However, havingbeen stranded with both theseso called solutions, I amcompletely and utterly againstthem. If I had to take one orthe other, it would be theSpacesaver, but it would onlybe with grave misgivings.

Although fitted with twentyinch diameter road wheels,this Jaguar came with an

with big windows, which let inplenty of light. The lightcoloured upholstery also helpsto make the interior bright andcheerful. I was also pleased tosee that good common senseprevailed and that black floormats and carpets were fitted.Apart from the fact that Iwould have preferred toeliminate the mottledaluminium in favour of allwood, I had no complaintswith the interior finish asprovided. I could comfortablylive with it as my everydaycar.

In the modern manner, theXF-S was fitted with a wholerange of electronic gizmosand gadgetry. The two frontseats have electricaladjustments for reach, height,backrest angle, lumbarsupport, and side bolsters.There are four electricwindows, plus electricadjustment for the twoexterior rear view mirrors.Those mirrors automaticallyfold in when the car is lockedand fold out again whenunlocked. The steering alsoadjusts for reach and heightelectronically. The climatecontrol is a dual zone system.Then there are gadgets formobile telephones, musicconnections, satellitenavigation and a whole lotmore. One of these days allyou will have to do, is to sitinto the car, tell it where youwant to go and it will driveyou there automatically!

There is a 60/40 split rearbench seat. It has a foldingcentre armrest with twocupholders. It also has ISOfixfittings in the two outerpositions for child safetyseats. While it can in theoryaccommodate three adultsabreast, the centre section isharder with marginally lessheadroom as a result and athird adult will automatically

reduce shoulder room for allthree passengers. It should,however, be suitable for threechildren sitting abreast,always assuming the centrepassenger does not legallyhave to be in a child safetyseat or on a booster cushion.

The luggage boot issuitably large and should bemore that satisfactory formost touring requirements.However, if you need to carry

the occasional long orawkward load, the split rearseat backrest can be foldeddown, to accommodate fewerpassengers and an awkwardload, or the transport of a lotof awkwardly sized items.

From there we movedon to Edinburgh for the Searchlight Tattoo,before returning via Glasgow and Belfast. Inthis extended tour we were able to test itsnormal and extended luggage capacity to thefull. Discover the convenience of those twoadditional seats, for family outings, besidesenjoying its superb and effortless cruisingabilities on Motorways, main roads and countrylanes. Its frugal fuel economy was experiencedfirst hand, besides its nippy acceleration andeffortless cruising speeds. This tour involvedlong hours driving, which would not have been

possible without the superb comfort of itsseats, its smooth ride, regardless of roadsurfaces and its excellent roadholding.Standing that bit higher than most family cars,you walk into it, in comfort. You sit up that littlebit higher, so you get an excellent view of theroad ahead and the scenery all around.

On the ferry crossing from Dun Laoghaire toHolyhead, our parking position on the car deck,was just opposite one of the passenger accessdoors. On arrival at Holyhead, I was surprisedto find a large crowd of motorists standing allaround and admiring it. The questions many ofthem asked me, obviously indicated they weretremendously impressed with the car. Icertainly am impressed and would love to haveone as my daily, family transport.

Renault scores a hat trick!Preliminary figures from the Motorcheck.ie Car Index show that French Auto ManufacturerRenault are on the verge of scoring a hat trick in the Irish market.

Figures for October indicate that Renault will be the number one selling manufacturer forthe month. With 916 registrations recorded to date, a massive 465 ahead of Toyota with 403registrations, it's very possible that the manufacturer will break the 1,000 threshold. Somethingthat hasn't been done since March of this year.

The Motorcheck.ie statistics show that Renault is currently dominating the Top 10 Modellist with an unprecedented First, Second and Third place finish guaranteed.

The Renault Fluence is currently placed at number one with 328 registrations, the Meganecurrently occupies second place with 275 units and the Clio follows closely in third positionwith 271. Fourth place goes to Volkswagen with 153 registrations for its popular Golf model.

Commenting on the results Motorcheck.ie Director Shane Teskey said “Renault started2010 with a strategy aimed squarely at volume sales. They introduced competitive pricingacross the entire range and were the first to introduce a market leading scrappage offer. This‘value for money’ approach coupled with a desirable range of new models is working well forthe company and I wouldn't be surprised if Renault ended up being the best sellingmanufacturer for 2010”.

Whilst the current statistics for October indicate that the month will show a significantpercentage increase on 2009 (70+%), Motorcheck.ie does not expect the overall total for theyear to exceed 100,000.

Now preparing for 2011 members of the motor industry is calling on the Government toextend the hugely successful scrappage scheme that it claims has saved thousands of jobsand created an additional 74 million for the exchequer.
