GENERAL INTEREST REPORT By KEVIN FENIX, www.twincam.ie

First we had off-road vehicles, then they became known as4x4s. That designation, however, was considered by the fashionconscious to indicate an on/off-road working vehicle, so the

SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) nomenclature was invented. Unfortunatelythe word Utility in the title, was also considered to be too workingclass, so SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) was applied by the morefashion conscious manufactures, to describe their vehicles in thissegment of the market. When the Green Brigade took an objectionto fashionable ladies driving these vehicles, as their daily transport,in an urban environment, some manufacturers invented the termCrossover to describe their participation in this lucrative market.

Now Nissan have come up with a further refinement on thistheme. At the Los Angeles Auto Show recently, they introduced aconvertible version of their Murano Crossover. Unlike the fixed topMurano, the drop top only has two passenger doors. We are told itwill seat four adults comfortably, as well as accommodating theirgolf bags and luggage. No mention is made as to the constructionof the folding top, so we have no indication as to whether it is fabricor a hard substance like metal, glassfibre or carbonfibre.

It is due to be launched early in 2011, so perhaps us Europeanswill see it at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011.

ROAD TESTBy KEVIN FENIX

www.twincam.ie

contd. on page 6

The Seat Leon and the Volkswagen Golf share the same platform, so there are similarities in their wheelbases, suspensiondesign and other mechanical components. In the case of the car on test, it also shares the same 1.6 TDI diesel engine asfitted to the Golf BlueMotion, so performance levels and fuel consumption is similar, but not the same, as the Leon is somewhatheavier than the Golf and has a different final drive ratio. The differences are, however, small. For example the Leon has a

top speed of 186 kph (115 mph), whereas the Golf BlueMotion manages 190 kph (118 mph).

this variety the Leon wassatisfyingly comfortable and aneffortless performer. Indeed onthe motorway you have to watchyour speed carefully, as while itnaturally drops off a little on arise, it picks up very quickly on adown hill section, so before youknow it you have gone from 120kph (75 mph) to well over 140kph (87 mph) and heading for160 kph (100 mph). At a steady100 kph (62 mph), the engine isticking over at a very relaxed2,000 rpm in 5th gear

The instruments and drivingcontrols are beautifully laid outfor safe, comfortable and relaxeddriving. The instrument binnacle, behind the steering wheel, contains three clear, easy to read, analogue dials. The smallercentral dial is the tachometer.Like the other two it has whitelettering on a black background. However, from 4,500 rpm to6,000 rpm the lettering is in red,to indicate the engine is now inthe upper limits of its speedrange. The speedometer is on theright and has all white lettering,

but the black background alsohouses a series of importantwarning lights, which areilluminated in red, when the needarises.

A matching circular dial on theleft actually houses a variety ofdifferent information. In its top leftit has an analogue fuel levelgauge. One of the most satisfyingthings about driving this car, apartform its effortless performance, was observing how very, veryslowly, the gauge moves from fulltowards empty. Indeed with over500 km (300+ miles) on the triprecorder, the needle was still notquite at the half way mark, fromthe full side. Matching the fuelgauge on the right, was theengine temperature gauge. Thelower half of this dial contained avariety of digital information: thetime, distance to empty, totaldistance covered and the tripdistance recorder. It is allbeautifully presented making iteasy to see at a glance, which allcontributes to the absolute drivingpleasure.

Top speed fortunately islargely irrelevant as in both casesit is well above the national speedlimits in most countries within theEuropean Union. Both cars have a0-100 kph acceleration time of11.3 seconds, so in day to daydriving their performances arepractically identical. As it is thatlittle bit heavier and has a slightlydifferent final drive ratio, there isa small difference in the Seat’sfuel consumption and hence itsexhaust emissions. Both cars, however, fall into Irish road tax

band A, which is good. While onthe subject of fuel consumption, the Seat delivers 55 mpg (5.1lt/100 km) on the EU urban cycle, improving to 75 mpg (3.7 lt/100km) on the extra urban cycle andaveraging out at 67 mpg (4.2lt/100 km) on the combined cycle. This gives exhaust emissions of109 gm/km.

During the course of this test,my driving included a lot of thenormal daily commuting, besideslocal runs and motorway drivingbetween Dublin and Belfast. In all

These twomirrors fold in automaticallywhen the car is locked andopen out again when it isunlocked. It is all so welldone, that I came to theconclusion, that the personwho designed the interior ofthis car obviously enjoysdriving himself/herself.

The road test took in avariety of road surfaces, bothin the Republic and inNorthern Ireland. Generallyspeaking, the suspensiongave a comfortable ride overmost surfaces, although youcould detect the rougherpatches, when they croppedup from time to time.Combined with thecomfortable ride, theroadholding was good, so youcould drive in a relaxedmanner, even when therewere a series of twists andturns to be negotiated. Thiswas helped by the positivefeel of the steering, geared togive a comfort orientatedthree turns from lock to lock.

The problem with towing atrailer of any sort, braked orunbraked, is that the car, astested, was fitted with aSpacesaver spare wheel, which is unsuitable fortowing. So if you are going totow, as many family cars do,from time to time, rememberyou need to get a proper, fullsize spare wheel and tyre. Thewell is certainly big enough totake it. If you do not want theextra weight of a proper sparewheel, for daily runningaround, you can always keepthe full size spare wheel in asafe place at home, until it isneeded and use theSpacesaver as your dailyemergency response.

Longer, lower and wider than theprevious model, the new BMW 6series convertible offers more spaceand comfort, especially for the tworear seat passengers. It is due to go

on sale in the UK towards the end of March2011, so perhaps prospective Irish buyers willhave access to the new car sometime in April2011.

Initially it will be offered with the choice oftwo petrol engines, a V8 and an inline sixcylinder. The 650i has a 4.4 litre V8, with twinturbochargers positioned in the V between thetwo banks of cylinders. It delivers 300 kWbetween 5,500 rpm and 6,400 rpm, with 600Nm between 1,750 rpm and 4,500 rpm. Thatlevel of power and torque gives it a top speedelectronically limited to 250 kph (155 mph) with0-100 kph acceleration in 5.0 seconds.Combined cycle fuel consumption is 26 mpg(10.8 lt/100 km), with exhaust emissions of 249gm/km. This makes it an expensive propositionfor Irish motorists, as that level of emissions, places it in band G, the highest level, which at

present pre-budget rates, demands anannual rip-off of €2100.

The 640i is powered by a 3.0 litre sixcylinder turbocharged engine. Its maximumpower output is 235 kW @ 5,800 rpm withtorque of 450 Nm between 1,300 rpm and4,500 rpm. Its combined cycle fuel consumptionis 35 mpg (8.0 lt/100 km). This gives emissionsof 185 gm/km, putting this version into road taxband E, which at present rates has a muchmore acceptable annual demand of €630 euro.On the performance front it too is governed toa top speed of 250 kph (155 mph), with 0-100kph acceleration in 5.7 seconds. That smalldrop in performance, will never be noticed onthe road, so it makes a much better propositionfor prospective Irish motorists. The 640i comesas standard with automatic transmissionincorporating stop/start technology.

The roof opens at the touch of a button inaround nineteen seconds, while closing takesaround 24 seconds. Both operations can beaccomplished on the move at speeds below 25mph (40 kph).

Initially the car will beavailable with three petrolengines and one diesel. Two ofthe petrol engines are basedon the excellent 1.4 litre TSIunit, one delivering 90 kW andthe other 118 kW. The third isa 2.0 litre TSI with an outputof 155 kW. The diesel is a 2.0litre TDI producing 104 kW.Later on in 2011 there will be

BlueMotion versionsincorporating stop/starttechnology and brake energyregeneration, as standard.

This latest Eos is expectedon mainland Europeanmarkets early in 2011, withthe UK and presumably Irishmarket coming on streamfrom March onwards. However, it is expected thatthe US will be its biggestselling market.

Volkswagen used theoccasion of the LosAngeles Auto Show, toannounce the latest

version of the Eos coupe cabriolet. The most noticeable change is tothe front end, which now featuresthe wide horizontal grille designpreviously seen on the Passat, Poloand Sharan. The revisedheadlamps now feature LEDtechnology for daytime runninglights. To go with the new widergrille, there is a new front bumperwith different airdams and fog lightmountings. At the rear, revised taillamps are similar to those fitted tothe new Passat.

The Nissan Juke succeeds the Peugeot 3008 which took thetitle last year. The Continental Irish Van of the Year 2011 title wasawarded to the Mercedes Benz Vito.

The Irish Motoring Writers' Association has organised the IrishCar of the Year Awards each year, for the past 33 years.

The Nissan Juke has been voted Continental Irish Car of theYear 2011 by the Irish Motoring Writers’ Association. Theannouncement was made at an awards ceremony today

in the Convention Centre Dublin attended by leading figures fromthe motor industry.

The results were as follows:1. NISSAN JUKE 185 POINTS 2. KIA VENGA 166 POINTS3. BMW 5 SERIES 158 POINTS4. SKODA YETI 149 POINTS5. OPEL ASTRA 144 POINTS

The Irish Motoring Writers Association judges awarded pointson the basis of criteria ranging from innovation and safety tospace, comfort, build quality, driving quality and value for money.

Presenting the award to Paul O’Sullivan, Marketing Directorof Nissan Ireland, Paddy Murphy of awards sponsor, ContinentalTyres Ireland, commented: “The Irish motoring writers haveselected an exciting model and no doubt the 2011 Irish Car ofthe Year accolade will provide a huge boost to the popularity ofthe Nissan Juke in the Irish market, particularly in the context ofthe current economic environment.”

Awards were made in five categories, reflecting thediversified nature of today’s car market in Ireland.

In addition the convertible hasreinforcing tubes in the A-pillars, additional reinforcingin the windscreen header rail, front door pillars and door sillpanels. Thanks to this stiffbody structure, the

convertible enjoys the samefirm suspension settings asits hardtop coupe sister. Theconvertible thus enjoys thesame sports performance andhandling as the Camarocoupe.

According to GeneralMotors, the ChevroletCamaro is now thebest selling coupe in

its segment of the US market. The company has now addeda convertible to the modelrange. It will be built inCanada and goes intoproduction in January 2011.The plan is to sell it onEuropean markets, as well asthe North American marketand cars for Europe areexpected to arrive during2011.

The only problem for Irishand UK prospective owners, isthat cars for Britain andIreland will only be built onFriday afternoons or Mondaymornings and as a result thesteering wheel will be on thewrong side. The otherproblem, especially for Irishowners, is that it comesequipped with a 6.2 litre V8petrol engine, that deliversaround 12 mpg in city andsuburban driving.Consumption improves toaround 18 mpg in open roaddriving. This will result in highexhaust emissions, so you canexpect it to fall into Irish roadtax band G, the highest level.Currently this demands anannual payment of €2100and who knows what thismay be after the budget. Thefuel consumption is much thesame whether you order the

six speed manualtransmission, or the optionalsix speed automatic.

Thankfully the car comeswith a proper folding soft top.Great care was taken to get asmooth hardtop likeappearance, that did not showthe normal supporting framesthrough the fabric. The fabricextends below the waistlineand the stitching has beendesigned to be as invisible aspossible. The company saythat it presents a smooth tautappearance that is similar inlooks to that of the hardtopcoupe. Once a single catchhas been released and theappropriate button pressed, the top will fold down in a Zpattern in twenty seconds. The top is made from a thickdurable canvas, with anacoustic headliner andincorporates a heated glassrear window.

Right from the designstage, the Camaro’s structurewas intended toaccommodate both hardtopand convertible body styles. As a result it has a stiffstructure, without maladieslike scuttle shake and vaguesteering. Part of thisreinforcing consists ofunderbody V-braces, front andrear, underbody tunnelbracing, under bonnet frontsuspension bracing andgearbox mounting stiffeners.

The strategic co-operation agreementbetween Renault, Nissan and Daimlersigned earlier this year has been

described as "more important that theoriginal alliance between Renault and Nissan10 years ago".

Renault's chief operating officer PatrickPelata said: "The automotive landscape haschanged not just because of the economiccrisis but because of globalisation, technological requirements, safety andemissions legislation, as well as thepressure on price. Economies of scale arenow even more important and this is whywe are seeing an acceleration of synergies.

"Renault is not a big carmaker. We willhave around 2.5 million sales in 2010, andthe development of new products and ourzero emission vehicles puts pressure on ourresearch and development budget. Daimleris big by turnover and market capitalisationbut Audi is getting closer all the time.

"If you put the budgets of Renault, Nissan

and Daimler together you get by far thelargest R&D capability in the industry. Biggerthan GM, bigger than Ford, so we will beable to work together to enjoy the besttechnologies. The main thing is to ensure werealise our full potential."

Pelata said that so far the alliance withDaimler is working well. The companies arealready working on the next generation ofSmart cars and the Renault Clio as well aselectric vehicles and light commercialvehicles.

Pelata also said that the French carmakerwould continue in Formula One. There havebeen rumours that the company will sell itsstake in the Renault F1 team, to which itsupplies engines.

He added: "There are many discussionsgoing on in F1, but one way or another wewill be there next season. We are very happyto be competing and the Renault brand issteeped in racing and I believe it does havean effect on our image.

DAIMLER DEAL ‘MORE IMPORTANT' THANRENAULT-NISSAN ALLIANCE A DECADE AGO

Recently we had a series of different peopleappearing on national television to tell us aboutthe roll out of mobile speed cameras all over the

country. All spun the line that they were solely to preventdeaths on the road and not for raking in money. Let uslook at some of these claims. The National RoadsAuthority were the same people who were giventelevision and radio time to tell us that they had madeextensive studies all over Europe, America and othercountries into motorways and as a result of theseexpensive studies had decided not to have rest areason our motorways, solely in the interests of safety! Theyhave of course since had to change their attitude on thismatter.

Then there was the AA spokesman telling us thatthe cameras were solely for the interests of road safety.

This is as believable as prostitutes telling people theydon’t charge for sex!

The Minister for Transport appeared with theMinister for Justice and told us that the cameras werethere solely for road safety. In fact he said he did notmind if a single offence was never recorded, as finesfor speeding were not the purpose of the cameras. Theywere solely for road safety. As he mouthed off thisbovine fertiliser, you could see the smirk on hisministerial companion’s face.

Speed cameras are there for one reason and ONEREASON only, TO MAKE MONEY FOR THEAUTHORITIES! Set a low enough speed and you rakeevery motorist into your net.
