AARescue Patrolmen attend anaverage of 3 car key lock-insa day according to statics

released by AA Ireland. 56% of these werelocked inside the main passenger sectionof the car, followed by 40% in the boot and4% in the engine itself. And it’s not justthe keys that are getting locked in the car,in many cases drivers have been leftfrantic as children and pets have alsobeen locked inside.It seems we are getting more complacentwith our keys with AA Patrolmen attending33% more of these incidents in 2009 thanin 2008, up from an average of 2 to 3 perday. With 774 cases reported for the yearto date to mid September, 2010 is oncourse to exceed the 1090 cases attendedby patrolmen last year.

“As an AA patrolman you never quiteknow what’s in store,” says AA PatrolManager, Noel Keogh. “There’s nothingmore frustrating than when you lock yourcar keys in your car, a mishap that’shappened to most of us at some stage inour driving careers. Add to this the stressof having a young child locked in a car and

it can become a very serious situation.”“It can happen very easily and in the

silliest of ways,” says Keogh. “We had onecall out recently where a dog jumped onthe internal locking button and lockedhimself and a small baby in the back of acar in very warm conditions. Luckily asan AA member, help was at hand and thesituation was resolved within fifteenminutes. It’s also not uncommon to havepeople locked out in their pyjamas or less!We’ve had golfers, surfers, joggers andothers locking their keys in the boot whilstgetting changed!”

While most motorists are completelystumped when the keys are locked inside,it is all in a day’s work for the AA. ThePatrol force has dealt with them all, and inaddition to their own experience they candraw on a database of ‘tricks of the trade’from the roadside Patrols of AAUK and ofother AA-type clubs around Europe andbeyond. The result is that 90% or more ofcars can be opened by the AA with nodamage. For tougher cases where a newkey is needed, the AA can arrange that aswell.

Volvo have a reputation for building, comfortable, safe, reliable, cars and this new S60 certainly ticks allthose boxes. However, with this latest model, the designers have tried to also give it an exciting and sportylook. Thus the roof slopes down in a gentle line to virtually the rear end of the boot lid, giving the car analmost fast back appearance. The front end is similarly attractive looking, with no visible bumper, but with

large flowing headlamp units, a prominent grille with a large Volvo badge, lower air vents for brake cooling andaerodynamics and small but effective daytime running lights. The car is still immediately recognisable as a Volvo,but it is also notably different to the current crop of Volvo saloons.

The D3 engine is a development of the five cylinder engine. It stillhas five cylinders, but its capacity has been reduced to 1984 cc. In its present level of tune, exhaust emissions are154 gm/km, putting the S60 D3 into Irish road tax band B, with acurrent tax burden of €156, at present rates. Considering the size,comfort and performance of the car, that is very satisfactory.

This is a really comfortable and relaxing car to drive, when fittedwith the Geartronic transmission. The leather covered steering wheelhas a high quality feel about it. Being power assisted, the steering isabsolutely effortless, yet it has a positive and direct feel, with 2.6 turnsfrom lock to lock. Parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces is helped bythe parking sensors, front and rear.

The suspension is relatively unsophisticated with MacPhersonstruts at the front and a multi-link system at the rear. It coped well withour appalling road surfaces, giving a smooth comfortable ride. In theVolvo tradition, the car was just loaded with electronic gizmos. Don’task me what most of them are or are supposed to do. I do like theheated front seats, offering three different degrees of heating. Thenthere is the pedestrian, city safety gadget, that is capable of detectingpedestrians crossing your path, or possibly about to cross your path. Ifyou do not see them, or fail to brake in time, the system sounds anaudible warning then applies the brakes. The only worry I have is that I

If I have a smalldisappointment about thisVolvo, it was that the seatswere upholstered in acombination of leather andcloth, rather than all leather.Apart from that, they werecomfortable, well shaped andsupportive. While black is notmy favourite choice forinteriors, at least in this Volvo,there was a contrast in thedifferent shades of the leather

Many, many times in thepast, I have often wondered ifthe people who design cars,actually drive carsthemselves. The reason forthis, is that you are presentedwith what appears to be afabulous looking design, but

In different circumstances, this could wellhave been my Star of the Show! As regularreaders/viewers will know, I like red cars. I

also like polished alloy wheels and I just loveconvertibles. I also like chrome trim setting offthe whole design. Finally I like colours other thanall black for the upholstery. So far this MeganeCC has everything going for it. Years ago Ithought that a folding hardtop was the greatestinvention ever, but with the passage of time, Ihave come around to preferring a high qualityfolding fabric top. However, for some reason, Ihave always considered the Megane CC to beamongst the best in the folding hardtop brigade.

I looked at this latest Megane CC and likedwhat I saw. I sat in the driver’s seat and once

again I was happy with what I found. I sat intothe back seat and found it to be up to acceptablestandards. So far almost everything was goingin the Megane CC’s favour. In fact it was just thatniggling sensation that I could not, at the end ofthe day, give the accolade to a car with a foldinghardtop, even though in recent weeks I haveroad tested another folding hardtop model, fromanother French manufacturer and came to theconclusion, that if I had to, I could quite easilylive with the car as my everyday transport.

While this car had a lot of black in its interior,it was set off with red, which helped to alleviatethe sombre ambience all black interiors create.Naturally I would have preferred more red, withblack for just the facia, window sills and floor

mats, or preferably a lighter colour like beige, orlight grey. Still, if I had to, I could quitecomfortably live with the upholstery combinationof the show car. So while I have hesitated to

award it my “Star of the Show” I still liked it verymuch and would be happy, nay delighted to ownone, in the same colours and finish as the showcar.

The car has an unladen weight of1,100 kg.
