Big news on the Jaguarstand at this year’sGeneva show, was the
launch of the new XFSportbrake. It is certainly animpressive looking touring car.There are two engines on offer,the 2.2 litre four cylinder dieseland the 3.0 litre V6 diesel. Thefour cylinder unit comes withStop/Start as standard and itdrives through an eight speedautomatic/manual gearbox. Thisengine delivers 120 kW and400 Nm, giving a potential topspeed of 209 kph (129 mph),with 0-100 kph in 10.5seconds. By EU standards, theCombined cycle fuelconsumption is 68 mpg (4.1lt/100 km), giving exhaustemissions of 149 gm/km. Thisputs this version in Irish roadtax band C, with a currentannual charge of 330 euro.
Alternatively you may preferthe 3.0 litre V6 diesel. Thiscomes in two levels of output.The lower level offers 177 kWand 500 Nm, giving a top speedof 240 kph (149 mph), with 0-100 kph in 7.1 seconds. EUCombined cycle fuelconsumption is 44 mpg (6.3lt/100 km) with exhaustemissions of 169 gm/km. Thisplaces this specification in Irish

road tax band D, with a currentannual charge of 481 euro.
The XFS model uses the 3.0litre V6 diesel tuned to deliver202 kW and 600 Nm. Thisprovides a top speed of 250kph (155 mph) with 0-100 kphin 6.4 seconds. The EUCombined cycle fuelconsumption is 44 mpg (6.3lt/100) km giving exhaustemissions of 169 gm/km,putting it in band D, similar toits lower powered V6 version.
Regardless of which engineis fitted all models have a self-levelling rear air suspension. Asan option all versions may befitted with Jaguar’s AdaptiveDynamics System, whichcontinuously monitors thesuspension to insure optimalstability and handling. iewed from the outside, the Volvo XC70 AWD looks like any other, conservativelystyled, estate car, or Tourer, if you prefer that description. However, when you sit intoit, you are transformed into another world of superb, luxury, comfort and refinementof the very highest order. Externally the test car was finished in what Volvo call “Ocean
Racing Blue”. Inside it was upholstered in the finest, cream covered leather, with light brown carpetsand floor mats. The top of the facia was covered in a dark brown plastic material, which, in myopinion, toned in perfectly with the main interior colours. The steering wheel was also covered incream leather and had the feeling of the finest quality and refinement.
The electronic key fob slotted intothe facia and when the enginestart/stop button was pressed, the fivecylinder diesel engine purred into life.Throughout its speed range it remainedsilky smooth, almost totally silent anddelivered an effortless flow of power.The test car was fitted with a six speedmanually operated gearbox and droveall four wheels, when the need arose.For most normal driving the power istransmitted through the two frontwheels, but torque can be diverted tothe rear wheels when the need arises.In keeping with the rest of themechanical specification, thegearchange is smooth and precise. Thepower assisted steering is likewisesmooth and precise, requiring acomfort orientated three turns fromlock to lock.
The excellent torque output allowsthe engine to have very high gearratios, which contribute to its excellentfuel consumption and is aided by theautomatic Stop/Start in city traffic.Performance is certainly not lacking,with a top speed of 200 kph (124 mph)and 0-100 kph acceleration in 10.4
seconds. This smooth refinedperformance does not come at theexpense of fuel consumption, which byEU testing standards is: Urban cycle 43mpg (6.5 lt/100 km), Extra urban cycle55 mpg (5.1 lt/100 km) and Combinedcycle 50 mpg (5.6 lt/100 km). This givesexhaust emissions of 149 gm/km,placing this spacious and versatile

still offers a normal luggagecapacity, under its roller blindtype cover, of 0.575 cubicmeters. If only two seats areneeded, you can remove theroller blind cover, lower therear seat backs and, loadingto the roof you have acapacity of 1.600 cubicmetres, on a level floor. Underthe floor there is a large traywith compartments, forholding smaller items. Theonly downside to towing isthat there is no spare wheel,instead you get a plug-in aircompressor and a bottle oflatex. However, the under floor

The roadholding wasgood on twisting narrowroads, although you had towatch the road carefully, asthis is a big car not ideallysuited to narrow twistingroads. Needless to say itcruised regally on goodstraight roads like modernmotorways. Visibility, from thedriver’s seat is good all round,helped by the large,intelligently shaped exteriorrear view mirrors and thelarge side windows.
The instruments and
well does appear largeenough to carry a normal sizewheel and tyre, so you canupgrade at extra cost to thisvital piece of equipment. Ifyou need to carry both extraluggage and rear seatpassengers, the rear seatbackrest is divided 40/20/40,giving you a high degree ofversatility and choice.
The front seats adjust forreach, height and lumbarsupport. Between the twofront seats there is anarmrest, with a storage boxbelow. The steering wheel isalso reach and heightadjustable.
The two outer rear seatsare comfortable and wellbolstered, similar to the twofront seats. They also haveISOfix fittings for child safetyseats. The centre section isflatter and harder andincludes a folding armrest,that incorporates a covered,shallow storage space andtwo fold away cupholders.
Although our road surfacesare in a pathetic state, beingfull of potholes, both large andsmall, the quality of the ridewas good and comfortable.Naturally you did hear andfeel many of theseinnumerable surface

The Volkswagen Passat Alltrack is based on the estate body. It comeswith 4MOTION all wheel drive, a raised suspension and underbodyprotection. It has a towing capacity of 2,000 kg for braked trailers.
Power is provided by the 2.0 litre TDI diesel engine, in two levels of tune.The lower powered version produces 104 kW and drives through a sixspeed manual gearbox. Its exhaust emissions are 150 gm/km, with an EUcombined cycle fuel consumption of 49 mpg (5.6 lt/100 km). The morepowerful version has a power output of 126 kW and drives through thesuperb six speed DSG automatic/manual transmission. Its exhaustemissions are 155 gm/km, with an EU Combined cycle fuel consumptionof 47 mpg (5.8 lt/100 km). Both versions thus fall into Irish road tax bandC, with a current annual charge of 330 euro.

The Volkswagen Up! has arrived in Ireland. Currently only the threedoor version is available, but the five door will be arriving shortly.Power is provided by a 1.0 litre, three cylinder petrol engine,
delivering 55 kW and 95 Nm. The three door has a gross vehicle weightof 1290 kg, which gives a power/weight ratio of 23.454 kg/kW, whichis pretty good for a small economy car.
I had the opportunity to take it on a short test run recently and wastremendously impressed with what I experienced. The engine wassmooth and silent for most of the time. When accelerating away fromrest it is a bit audible, but this soon reduces when you change up intosecond gear and disappears almost entirely once you shift into third.It cruised smoothly and effortlessly on straight main roads and had nodifficulty in keeping up with the other traffic, regardless of the variousspeed limits. On narrow twisting country roads it glided alongeffortlessly without the need to change down for corners or slowersections of the road.
The driver’s seat was comfortable and the simple instrument panelwas well laid out for clear visibility and ease of use. Under the curvedhood there was a large analogue speedometer with clear whitelettering and red needles on a black background. To the left there wasa small tachometer, with a matching small fuel gauge on the right. Thepanel in the centre of the facia that houses the heating/ventilationcontrols and audio system, is equally simple, clear and easy to use.
My test car was the top specification High Up! model and had aleather covered steering wheel with a comfortable, high quality feel.My only complaint was that the mounting point of the seatbelt on theB-pillar, was rather high up, with the result that the seatbelt rubbed offthe side of my neck. As far as I could determine it is not adjustable forheight. The black test car was basically black inside, but one of the redcars had a red and black interior, which certainly brightened things upand, in my opinion, looked splendid.
The normal luggage area offers 0.251 cubic metres of space, whichis good for a small economy car. If this is insufficient for yourrequirements, you can carry up to 50 kg in a suitable container on theroof. Its turning circle between kerbs is 9.8 metres, which is very goodand makes manoeuvring in tight spaces so much easier. Potential topspeed is 171 kph (106 mph) with 0-100 kph acceleration in 13.2seconds, which again is good for an economy car. By EU testingstandards, fuel consumption is as follows :Urban cycle 47 mpg (5.9 lt/100 km)Extra urban cycle 70 mpg (4.0 lt/100 km)Combined cycle 60 mpg (4.7 lt/100 km)
