Unveiled at theGeneva MotorShow earlier in theyear, the HyundaiVeloster coupe is
scheduled to be launched onthe UK market in February2012. Presumably it will alsobecome available on the Irishmarket around the same time.
As shown in Geneva, theVeloster had two front doorsand a single rear door on theright hand side. While that isperfectly acceptable on carswith left hand drive, it will beinteresting to see if this ismodified for cars with righthand drive. For obvious safetyreasons, cars with right hand

This latest Volkswagen Jetta is a spacious, comfortable, good looking family saloon, with a decent sizedluggage space and an impressive overall performance. It is also extremely pleasant to drive, both in anurban environment and out in the countryside. Its ride and roadholding are excellent. Family cars needto be versatile and adaptable. Besides offering a commendably large luggage space of 0.510 cubic
metres, it will also carry up to 75 kg in a suitable container on the roof and tow a braked trailer or caravanof up to 1405 kg, or an unbraked trailer of up to 650 kg.

In the bottom centre of thetachometer there is a smallround gauge showing thefuel level. The large righthand gauge is thespeedometer and it has amatching small round gaugein its lower centre showingthe engine temperature.Between the two large rounddials there is a rectangular,digital information panel, thatshows a variety of differentinformation like the time,outside air temperature, totalmileage, trip distance, dooropen or not properly closedetc.
The radio/CD player is inthe top of the centre console,below the two air vents.There are further audiorelated controls for thesystem including theBluetooth telephone facilities

and adjusts for both reachand height. It is geared togive three turns from lock tolock. The electrically powerassisted rack and pinionsteering has a firm positivefeel at all times, be it out onthe open road ormanoeuvring in tight spaces.The large well shaped,exterior rear view mirrorsgive a good view along bothsides, which together withthe optional Park DistanceControl makes manoeuvringin confined spaces so mucheasier. The gearlever fallsconveniently to hand and hasa smooth yet positive actionfor all gears. The frontpassenger seat also adjustsfor reach, height andbackrest angle. Both frontseats are superblycomfortable.
The rear bench seat isdivided 60/40 in thebackrest. While the two outerpositions are comfortable foradults, the centre section isfirmer and higher in thecushion, so while it issuitable for children, it is lesscomfortable for adults.
The centre section of thebackrest has a fold downarmrest, that has a fittingdesigned to hold two cups.The two outer positions haveISOfix fittings for child safetyseats. All five seatingpositions have three point lapand shoulder seat belts andadjustable head restraints.When additional luggagespace is needed, or whenawkward items of luggagehave to be accommodated,the seat backrest can belowered in sections onto theseat cushion.
Overall I was veryimpressed with this newVolkswagen Jetta. It has agood solid well built feel. Itsride and roadholding are
on the two horizontal arms ofthe steering wheel. Below theaudio panel there are thevarious controls for the airconditioning. A rotary switchon the lower right hand sideof the facia, between thesteering wheel and driver’sdoor looks after theheadlamps and foglamps,while the driver’s doorarmrest has the buttons forthe four electric windows.The driver’s door has thecontrols for the electrically
good, it is comfortable andeasy to drive, with a perfectlysatisfactory performance,velocity wise, plus a highlycommendable performanceas far as its fuel consumptionis concerned. Its low exhaustemissions make it
inexpensive to tax at currentrates of Irish annual road tax.If it is a medium sized familysaloon you need, I canwithout hesitationrecommend this latestVolkswagen Jetta with its 1.6TDI diesel engine.

All are easy to see andreach whilst driving. The lefthand stalk looks after thedirection indicators as wellas the main and dippedbeams, while the right handstalk operates the wipers andwashers. This third generation Focus has a lot going for it. First of all the test car was painted red, my favourite colour for cars, so it got off to a goodstart. Then I found the exterior styling to be very attractive, so that was another point in its favour. Admittedly it did have a few initialdifficulties to overcome, in that it was powered by Ford’s 1.6 litre TDCi diesel engine, which was not nearly as smooth and silent in operationas the 2.0 litre TDCi diesel in the Ford C-Max I was testing the previous week. Then the Focus’s suspension was a lot harder than that
velvety smooth ride provided by the C-Max, but as time passed I acclimatised myself to the Focus surroundings and by the end of the test period Iwas more than happy with it.

The test car was fittedwith very attractive twentyspoke, cast alloy, seventeeninches diameter alloywheels. The spare wheelwas a pressed steelSpacesaver of sixteen inchesdiameter. The spare wasstored under the luggagefloor, while the jack and toolswere in a polystyrene holderunder the spare wheel.Under the luggage floorcarpet, around the sparewheel, there is a polystyrenetray divided into sections,that is suitable for storingsmall items, that mightotherwise roll around on thefloor.
In its normal guise, theboot provides 0.421 cubicmetres of luggage space.The rear seat backrest isdivided 60/40 and thebackrest can be folded insections to provideadditional space for longitems. However, as thebackrests merely drop ontothe cushions, they do notprovide a level extension tothe normal luggage floor andthe bulkhead between theboot and passengercompartment, has a very lowopening, so additional spaceis very limited.
Towing capacity is 670kg for unbraked trailers and1200 kg for braked trailersor caravans. Roof loading isprobably limited to 75 kg.
From a driving point ofview, the instruments andcontrols are well laid out forcomfort and ease of use. Themain instrument binnacle,behind the steering wheel,
electrically adjustable fromthe driver’s seat and fold inautomatically when theengine is switched off andthe central locking activated.
Electric power assistedsteering, also helps toreduce energy consumption.The steering is geared togive a very positive2.5 turns from lock to lock,yet it never feels heavy or

ROAD USERS:“Are you ready
for winter?”
As winter is nearly upon us, theRoad Safety Authority (RSA) isasking road users to make surethey are ready for winter road
conditions. Noel Brett, Chief Executive said “Driving
during the winter months creates a multitude ofdifferent challenges with more hours of darknessand poorer weather conditions. Extreme weatheris also a particular hazard at this time which canrange from freezing fog, gale force winds, heavyrain, flooding and ice and snow”.
He urged drivers to service their vehicles andcheck them to ensure they are ready for thewinter ahead. “Drivers should consider servicingtheir vehicle to make sure it is fit and safe forwinter driving. A few simple precautions canensure the safety of you and your family on theroads this winter. Don’t get caught out if severeweather strikes again, I would urge everyone tomake the necessary checks on your vehiclenow.”
Mr. Brett added: “The key this winter is toslow down and remain a safe distance behindthe car in front of you. Using dipped headlightstoo during the daytime will make it easier forother road users to see you, so don’t wait fordarkness.”
Pedestrians and cyclists were alsoencouraged to get ready for winter. “To be safeon the roads at winter a pedestrian or cyclistsmust be seen. That means ensuring the lights onthe bike are working properly and using a torchwhen out walking. A high-visibility jacket is alsoan essential piece of clothing which will ensureyou stand out in traffic. Pedestrians are alsoreminded to use footpaths where provided, ifthere is not footpath walk facing oncoming trafficand never walk on a dual carriageway or
motorway - use pedestrian crossings whereprovided.
There are a number of simple precautions theRSA advises for driving over the winter months:● Use your lights. As we come into the winter
months, motorists are advised to use dippedheadlights during the day so you are easilyseen. Headlights and taillights should beclean and in working order. Ensure the beamon your headlights is adjusted correctly toavoid dazzling other drivers unnecessarily.Only use foglights in foggy conditions anddon’t forget to turn them off after they havebeen used in fog and mist.
● Check your tyres…they are your onlycontact with the road. Car tyres should beabove the minimum legal thread depth of1.6mm but need to be changed before theyget this worn. The RSA advises replacingtyres when they reach 3mm and don’t buysecondhand tyres as you cannot be sure ofits history. The legal limit for motorcycle tyresis 1mm and again should be replaced beforethey get this worn. Tyres need to be at themanufacturers recommended level to givethe motorist the best chance in extremeconditions.
● Safe Distance. It takes longer to stop a carduring the winter weather so slow down andallow extra distance between you and the carin front. Remember, only a fool breaks the 2second rule!
● Understand your brakes. Check your carmanual and find out if your vehicle has safetyassist technology such as Electronic StabilityControl (ESC) or Anti-Lock Braking System(ABS). Learn how these technologies canassist your driving in harsh weatherconditions.
● Make sure you can clearly see. All toooften motorists do not de-fog or de-icewindows and mirrors which can compromisevisibility. This winter make sure windows andmirrors are clear, and carry a de-icer andscreen scraper in the car. Do not use boilingwater as this can crack the windscreen.Wipers are especially important for drivingthis winter; they need to be checked for wearand tear, and replaced if necessary.
● Be prepared. During these winter months itis advised that motorists carry a number ofessentials in the boot of their car, shouldsevere weather strike again this year. a) High visibility vest;b) Appropriate footwear in case you need to
leave your vehicle e.g. boots;c) A hazard warning triangle;d) Spare wheel;e) Tow Rope;f) A shovel;g) De-icing equipment (for glass and door
locks);h) Spare bulbs;i) First aid kit;j) A fire extinguisher;k) A working torch;l) A car blanket, additional clothing & some
food and water;m) It’s recommend that drivers keep their
fuel tanks topped up especially in timesof adverse weather conditions! You do notwant to run out of fuel on a journey in badweather.
● In the event of a breakdown. Drivers needto ensure their vehicle is well in off the roadso as not to obstruct other vehicles. Thedriver should also put on their hazardwarning lights. If the vehicle breaks down on
the motorway pull in as far as you can,alerting traffic behind you with hazard lights.The driver should leave their vehicle, getbehind the barrier (on the embankment) andcall the Gardaí, on their mobile phone orroadside telephone.
● Beware of ‘Black Ice’. Black Ice is one ofwinter’s biggest hazards as it is difficult tosee. Watch out for sheltered/ shaded areason roads, under trees and near high walls.
● And most importantly, Keep up to date.Listen to local weather and traffic reports. Payheed to the weather warnings alerting driversof unsafe and dangerous driving conditions.The Road Safety Authority has set up a
special section on its website www.rsa.ie toprovide the public with information on using theroad safely in the event of extreme weatherconditions. For further information please seeRSA Severe Weather Advice.
