test. It was a bright metallic

red, my favourite colour

This Mondeo Estate does not have the

same sporting good looks, not that it is bad

was that in normal 5 seater

mode, the hatchback is

credited with 0.541 cubic

meters of luggage space,

compared to just 0.500

cubic meters for the

Estate.

In both cases the cars

had a Spacesaver spare

wheel. When only two

seats are needed and you

load to the roof, the

hatchback has 1.437 cubic

metres of space compared

to 1.605 cubic metres for

the Estate.

Performance wise the

hatchback has a top speed

of 215 kph (133 mph) with

0-100 kph acceleration in

9.3 seconds, compared to

210 kph (130 mph) and 0-

100 kph in 9.4 seconds for

the Estate, possibly due to

its less sloping roofline.

This difference is so small

as to be of no con-

sequence in day to day

driving.

When it comes to fuel

consumption, using EU

testing standards, there is

a similar minor difference.

On the urban cycle the

figures are the same, 5.1

lt/100 km (55 mpg). On the

Extra urban cycle there is a

tiny difference, 3.9 lt/100

km (72 mpg) for the

hatchback and 4.1 lt/100

The latest version of the Mercedes-Benz A class comes

with a number of additional features as standard. These

include, heated front seats, cruise control, reversing

camera and keyless starting. It also includes Collision

Prevention Assist, Adaptive Brake Assist, Drowsiness

Detection Assist and Dynamic Select, which allows the

driver to adjust the driving dynamics to suit the road and

traffic conditions.

Buyers have the choice of four diesel and six petrol

engines. The range also includes 4-Matic and Mercedes-

AMG models. The emphasis in Ireland will be placed on

the A160 with a 1.6 litre petrol engine and the A160

diesel model with a 1.5 litre diesel engine. The A160

model has a starting price of €27,145, excluding delivery

and associated charges, while the A160 diesel costs

An interesting model from a fuel economy

prospective is the A180 BlueEFFICIENCY diesel that
