Built by W. D. Williamson around 1912, the Cherry Villa’s original owner was Samuel V. Wheeler and his wife, Mary Jane. Sam Wheeler was a private in the Confederate Navy during the Civil War, and two of his sons served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Visiting often, their children would bring home treasures from their travels, which included a large cedar chest full of bearskins, ivory carvings, and exotic plants from foreign lands. Some of those exotic plants became part of the house’s original landscape.

The Cherry Villa holds special memories for local resi-dents and visitors alike. In the spring of 1927, Helen Franklin Baker opened the doors of the Cherry Villa to

the public, making it the first tourist home in the area. Located between Knoxville and Bristol, the Bed & Break-fast was a frequent stop-over for the executives of lo-cal businesses. Rumor has it that even Colonel Sanders would reside at the Cherry Villa during his travels from Kentucky through the south. The home also served as a location for local residents to host bridal showers and tea parties. In 1935, the Cherry Villa was officially rec-ognized as a part of the city’s Garden Club, showcasing the home’s White Dogwoods, Redbuds, tulips, crepe myrtle bushes, devils shoe strings, Primroses, and Har-dy Hydrangeas.

It was in the spring of 2005, during one of the tough-est years of her life, that Jeannie Knott first laid eyes on Morristown’s historic Cherry Villa. After their current place of employment in Brentwood, Tennessee, had decided to close its doors, her husband Greg was of-fered a job with TuffTorq in Morristown. Scouting out

housing options, Greg scheduled a tour of the house for the weekend that his wife would be coming into town. Charmed by the home’s beautiful yard, Greg and Jeannie felt like they were driving into a park as they pulled up in the driveway for the first time. Although it wasn’t exactly the one-level brick house that the Knotts had in mind, they fell in love with the home almost im-mediately.

Evident from the original hardwood floors, the two-story house had been well-preserved over the years. The first floor of the home contained a master bedroom suite, a full-sized kitchen with a large dining room, a sun room in the rear foyer, and a living room and den area con-nected by the original pocket doors. The living room con-tained a double-fireplace with a vintage antique mantle, and the original glass still remained in the house’s front windows. A winding wooden staircase led to the second floor, which featured a master bedroom suite with a powder room and two other bedrooms with a

Jack & Jill-style bathroom in between. The original cel-lar served as the basement, and a wooden wrap-around porch stretched from the front to the rear deck.

Greg and Jeannie decided to buy the house and make it their home. By October of that year, they were both settled in Morristown.

Although Greg and Jeannie had settled into their home, the stressful year was still building up for two climac-tic events, the weddings of their twin daughters, Nata-lie and Lucy. As the proud

mother of the brides, Jeannie was the official wedding planner for two weddings that were anything but small. Their new home became the central headquarter for ev-erything wedding related. In mid-October, Natalie was married at the Demonbreum House in Nashville. It was followed shortly after by Lucy’s wedding at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland.

Both weddings went off without a hitch, as two of the most beautiful events that Greg and Jeannie had ever attended.

The proud owner’s of an empty nest, Greg and Jeannie were free to focus their attention on their new home. As they began to decorate the house, the Knotts wanted to preserve the historical look and feel of the Cherry Villa as they made the place their own. They selected furniture that consisted of traditional-style pieces and family heirlooms, includ-ing an oval drop-leaf table that belonged to Jeannie’s great-grandmother and a side table that was hand-crafted by Greg’s father.

As spring arrived, Greg and Jeannie took on the time-consuming task of land-scaping their home. Aware of the house’s history as

part of Morristown’s Garden Club, they used as many of the original plants as they could. Therefore, just like in springs of the past, the yellow blossoms of the

Primroses were ready to bloom, the Hardy Hydran-geas were available for local residents to use in weddings, and the ferns could still be borrowed by neighbors. During their digging and planting, Greg and Jeannie discov-ered the house’s original stepping stones, which were formed by pouring concrete into holes. In the backyard, Greg and Jean-nie planted their own garden, with okra, onions, lettuce, squash, green beans, jalapenos, toma-toes, sweet potatoes and an occasional spaghetti squash by accident. The Knotts also planted sev-

eral herbs like rosemary and basil, because they enjoy preparing fresh home-cooked meals with the touch of their own seasoning. From the various fruit trees in the yard, Greg and Jeannie also made apple jelly, crabapple jelly, pear preserves and the annual cherry pie.

From the moment they arrived, the Knotts were wel-comed with open arms by their neighbors on Morn-ingside. It was through their neighbors that Greg and Jeannie learned the history of the Cherry Villa, as peo-ple dropped by to share their stories about the house.

In no time at all, the Cherry Villa began to feel like home for Greg and Jeannie Knott. Carrying on a special tradi-tion that began when they were first married, Friday nights have once again become Steak Night, a time for one of Greg’s delicious steaks and relaxation from the work week. The wraparound porch has become the routine spot for morning coffee in a carefully timed process that can last for hours when visitors arrive, moving from the front porch to the side porch to the back porch as the sunlight gets brighter. With a large extended family and several nieces and nephews living in Knoxville, Greg and Jeannie’s home provides a nice retreat for their family, espe-cially during the University of Ten-nessee’s football season.

The Cherry Villa has become known for barbecues in the backyard and late nights of laughter and reminiscing around the fire pit.

Over the past two years, with the addition of two grand-daughters to the Knott family and a third on the way, the Cherry Villa has become known as Goo Goo and Grand-Dad’s house. Jeannie can be found on the back porch with her granddaughter Sophie, making mudpies with leftovers from the garden. Greg can be found sitting in the recliner in the den, rocking his precious Mattyewill to sleep. The yard has become a playground for the young girls to explore, smelling the pretty flowers and staring up at the giant trees.

Approximately one hundred years ago, the first residents of the home were cultivating the Cherry Villa’s first Prim-rose plants and pouring the concrete for the stepping stones. Over the past decade, the flowers that grow in the yard have been used for numerous events in the commu-nity and the fruits that grow on the trees have become an ingredient in many recipes. With the centennial of the house approaching, Greg and Jeannie have divided the Primrose plants and transplanted them throughout the yard. As they continue to preserve and cultivate the his-tory of the Cherry Villa, the Knotts are also putting down roots for something much greater. When their daugh-ters and granddaughters arrive at the house for a visit, the Knott’s are reminded of the most important part of any home --- family. Preserved by memories and culti-vated by love, they are now able to watch as their family grows.

During the fall of 1998, Martha Jane Thomas met Patrick Alexander through mutual friends while attending Missis-sippi State University. After a year of being friends and dating occasionally, they decided to be “an official couple.” Marth Jane tell us their favorite dates included going to MSU football games, attend-ing BSU meetings on Tuesday nights, or eating at one of their favorite restaurants.

In June 2000 at Carriage Hills Baptist Church (Patrick’s home church), Patrick asked Martha Jane to be his wife. and she learned very quickly that the way to Patrick’s heart was through his stomach... she knew she had to learn how to cook more than just mac and cheese and pizza rolls so even though there has been a few kitchen mishaps, the couple were we were married at Myrtle Methodist Church (Martha Jane’s home church) sur-rounded by family and friends! It was such a beautiful day and was full of so many wonderful memo-ries. Two months later, they made a HUGE move for a newly-wed couple to the city of Fort Worth, TX for Patrick to attend seminary at Southwest-ern Baptist Theological Seminary. What won-derful memories the couple have of their time in Texas and being almost seven hours away from everyone they knew, helped them learn to depend on the Lord for ALL their needs.

Patrick graduated in May 2003 with a degree in Christian Education. Martha Jane and Pat-rick were so excited to once again begin a new phase of their lives and ministry! The couple moved to Morristown in August of 2003 and started serving the Lord in full time ministry at Buffalo Trail Baptist Church, where Patrick

is Associate Pastor and Min-ister to Students. Patrick has loved attending the local sporting events and spend-ing time with the youth of their church and community.

Martha Jane feels so truly blessed with the wonder-ful friendships she’s made through their church and her employment at Rowena’s on Main. Martha Jane and Pat-rick have so enjoyed getting to know and love the people of Morristown and Buffalo Trail!

After getting settled in Morristown, the couple quickly realized that someone was missing... a child! After two and a half years of trying to have a baby, Martha Jane and Patrick were blessed with their precious Caleb in February 2010.Martha Jane exclaims - he makes our family complete and brings so much joy to our lives.

The couple reflect that they have learned so much in their 10 years of marriage and the most important are: Laugh often, never go to bed angry, never stop com-municating, that it is much more important to plan a marriage than to plan a wedding, always be your mate’s biggest fan, always stick together, and the most important thing: make Christ the center of your life, your home, and your family. ♥

Hello, my name is Pastor Jeff Wells and I would like to share with you the story of the Love of my life. I first met my wife Tammy over twenty years ago in a church service when I heard the

voice of an angel singing praises to her God. You could hear the love that she had for her Savior by the passion she sang with. I walked up to her and told her what a wonderful job she had done, not realizing what God had in store for the future. It was almost two years later that I began to minister at a church that Tammy was a mem-ber of and we begin to share our desires for serving our Lord. That same passion I had heard her sing with was in her voice when she spoke about fulfilling her purpose in life for Jesus. We became friends working together in mission work and as the years went by we became best friends, through our common desire to love God and to show the love of God to everyone that we could.

As with any real love story there is always triumph and tragedy. As with all things that are genuine and real, evil showed up to try and taunt a beautiful friendship but God will show up and take what people mean for your harm and turn it for your good. God turned a great-est tragedy for both Tammy and myself, into a beautiful love story.

Tammy and I co-pastor the Rock of Refuge Church and have been married now for four years and I can easily tell you I have never been happier at any point in my life. We love our families and our church family and Tammy has two beagles, (Duke and Daisy) which she calls her babies and loves very much. When they start hollowing, I tease her and tell her that I am sure they are demon dogs but I have to be careful... I’m thinking, if it came down to me or them, I might be in trouble :)

We were married by Pastor Sanford Cooper on January 19, 2008 and took a honeymoon cruise of the Mexican Riviera. We call the Liberty Hill area of Morristown home and fall deeper and deeper in love with each other as we continue to fall deeper in love with our purpose of sharing the love of God. ♥

Eva Dean Inman was “mamaw” to everyone she met, says granddaughter Ronna Inman. As a child I can remem-ber mamaw picking me up from Hillcrest Elementary. I would watch for her car to pull up and I knew where our next stop would be, the ByLo for nachos and cheese!! Throughout my childhood I remember mamaw coming to my ball games and church events and how she’d go through the house singing Amazing Grace and how she loved it when I sang with her. I would bring friends to her house on the weekends and they always left with full bellies and sense of love. Ma-maw loved everyone, no matter their color of skin, male or female. I moved in with my grandmother in 1993, after the passing of my grandfather. In 1995 mamaw was diag-nosed with Leukemia. She fought it head on for several years and after many trips to the Cancer Center in Knox-ville, she was finally in remission and another chance to sing Amazing Grace. I wouldn’t let mamaw slow down. I planned little trips and off we’d go. Mamaw had several things on her list that she “would like” to do, go to a UT Lady Vols game, meet Pat Summit, meet Peyton Manning, go to the beach and to Nashville. As fate would have it, I had to attend a class in Nashville once, the very same week as CMT Fest. During the evening she and I would go to Opryland Hotel, shop-ping, and more sightseeing and on the night of the CMA awards. I kept telling her we were going to meet some “stars” and mamaw would just laugh UNTIL Alan Jackson, Neil Mccoy, Leeann Wolmack, Faith Hill and more were was standing right in front of us!! Not being the shy type, I grabbed mamaw’s hand and said “step it up mamaw, here we go” and mamaw ended up getting her photo made

with Neil McCoy! (#1 of the list) After that, mamaw got to go to several Lady Vols games (#2 off the list) Mamaw was a Big Orange fan, basketball and football. I remember fill-ing the livingroom full of my friends and watching the UT football games and my friends loved it and Mamaw be-cause was the life of the party! A big blessing and miracle happened on Aug. 4, 2001. Bailee Alexis Rice was born and would be Mamaw’s first great grandchild and the following year, In 2002 we took mamaw and Bailee to Myrtle Beach (#3 off the list) and on March 23, 2004 mamaw’s name-sake and second great granddaughter Eviee Grace Dalton was born. The four of us had an unbelievable and unbreakable bond. On May 2009, Mothers Day, Mamaw wasn’t feeling very well. I remember calling my dad to come and help me get her to the hospital, not knowing she wouldn’t come back home. She was diagnosed with stomach cancer. We traveled from nursing home to hospital for 3 months. Al-ways thinking of mamaw and her bucket list, I knew I to get in touch with Pat Summitt as we didn’t have long. I called UT Athletic Department and after several attempts, I finally made contact with Joan Cronin, The Lady Vols were in a camp that week, meaning Coach Summitt was in town and I was not giving up! Finally, Ms Cronin was able to arrange a phone call between Coach Summitt and mamaw!!! I will NEVER forget the look on mamaws face when she heard Pat Summits voice on the other end of the phone! (she didn’t meet coach face to face but the phone call was perfect, #4 off the list) As mamaw became weaker, she’d ask me to sing Amazing Grace for her, but I couldn’t. I just sat and held her hand. On Aug 2, 2009 after being with mamaw at the nursing home most all day, I needed to go home for a while , the nurse said she would call if there were any changes and sadly, it wasn’t long before I got that dreaded call, “Ronna you need to come on back. She may only have 15 min-utes” and I was 20 minutes away. I told the nurse to “go tell mamaw that I am on my way!!” I had always heard that the last thing to go would be hearing so I ran every red light in town, getting several red light camera tickets along the way but I HAD TO GET TO MY MAMAW! I ran in the room to find my dad, step-mom, and uncle surrounding her, I remember thinking “Thank You Lord, she is still with us” as I laid on her bed and put my cheek to hers and sang Amazing Grace to my mamaw one last time. She then crossed her arms, laid them on her chest, and took her last breath... I realized at that very moment just how Amazing God’s Grace is. ♥

During her senior year at Morristown-Hamblen East High School, Kelly Bush was the President of the Beta Club, an alto in the choir, a writer for the yearbook staff, and an actress in the high school’s production of Oklahoma. It came as no surprise when she was voted the Class of 2003’s Most Likely To Succeed. For Kelly, at the ripe age of eighteen, success meant moving as far away as possible, making the big bucks, and finding happiness. After high school, Kelly continued her education at East Tennessee State Uni-versity. Inspired by an interesting ca-reer path that she discovered during high school, Kelly decided to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health, with a concentration in Radiography. As well as a source of education, ETSU became the catalyst that brought ma-turity and social extroversion into her life. After a year of working in the field, Kelly decided to enroll in a program at Chattanooga State Community Col-lege that would allow her to become a registered sonographer. Shortly after completing the program, Kelly was hired as a sonographer. She loved that each day at work brought new experiences and the opportunity to impact the lives of the patients she met. Performing a variety of ex-ams to search for pathology or abnormalities, Kelly felt that her job was personal and rewarding, scanning and examining specific organs in hopes of improving or pos-sibly saving a life. Although content with her career, Kelly was still search-ing for the kind of happiness that would make her truly successful. In the spring of 2010, Kelly stumbled upon an opportunity that would change her entire outlook on life. As part of a mission trip with a local church, Kel-ly found herself on a ten-hour flight to Bulgaria. Upon arrival, she was faced with culture shock as she en-countered poverty for the first time. Traveling from one orphanage to another, Kelly and the rest of her group helped fit the orphans with new shoes and socks.

During her time in Bulgaria, Kelly discovered a desire to experience the differences between European culture and her own. Her first chance to embrace something new came in the form of something that resembled a greasy piece of sausage coiled into the shape of a dol-lar sign. It was called mystery meat, and the ingredients were just that --- a mystery. Preparing to taste the worst, she cut off a small piece, closed her eyes and began to

chew. With taste buds that were anything but disappointed, Kelly had just taken her first bite of something that would lead her closer to finding happiness. After visiting Greece, exploring the ancient Macedonian ruins of Philippi, Kelly was on her way home. However, she had been bitten by something, some-thing that Americans refer to as “the travel bug.” Guided by the reviews of Travelocity, Kelly mapped out the places that she wanted to visit. She began at the top of her list, diving headfirst into the hustle and bustle of New York City. Weaving in and out of traffic inside of a daredevil taxi, she visited the city’s most popular sights. A shopaholic by day, Kelly spent hours at her favorite stores

like H&M, Forever 21, and Anthropologie. A Broadway junkie by night, she satisfied her love of theater with two of her favorite shows, Wicked and The Phantom of the Opera. Standing on the Top of the Rock observation deck in Rockefeller Center, with the entire city laid out beneath her, Kelly felt the elusive touch of happiness land upon her once again. The most memorable parts of her trip were found in outdoor cafes, crowded coffee shops, and the restau-rants made famous by the movies. Kelly was sipping on frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity, an infamous boutique that is known as New York’s first coffee shop. Across town, she stood in line anxiously awaiting a juicy cheeseburger from the modern day “roadside burger stand” called the Shake Shack. She had grown to love the crowds and the people watching. She had learned to appreciate the freedom of being away from the famil-iarity of her hometown. However, the most rewarding thing that Kelly had acquired as she began her travels

was her appetite for the new, unusual and quite often mouth-watering meals that she discovered.

Strolling along the streets of Asheville’s eclectic and mul-ticultural downtown, Kelly discovered a burrito stuffed with steak, shrimp and queso blanco at Salsas. Enjoy-

ing the quaint atmosphere of historic Savan-nah nestled be-tween a river and the ocean, she started off her mornings at Goosefeath-ers with a pa-nini sandwich of scrambled eggs, roasted red pep-pers and cheddar cheese smoth-ered between

two toasty pieces of ciabatta bread. Nearby with a view of the Atlantic’s crashing waves, Kelly gorged herself on the Low Country Boil feast of shrimp, crab, crawfish and clams at Tybee Island’s Crab Shack. However, her trav-eler’s buffet wouldn’t be complete without a taste of true Chicago cuisine. While visiting the Windy City and participating in the Oktoberfest activities, Kelly’s menu included a Chicago Dog smothered in toppings, spicy Cajun gumbo, and an infamous “deep-dish” pizza with as much cheese and sauce piled on as possible.

Most recently, Kelly traveled across the international dateline to spend a week in Hong Kong with her best friend. Riding on a cable car at 1,300 feet above the ground, she visited the Peak to indulge in shopping and souvenir hunting. After enduring a two-hundred step climb, she witnessed the majestic view of the Giant Bud-dha resting atop the city’s hills. Of course, no trip would be complete without sampling the menu. Learning to master the art of eating with chopsticks, Kelly experi-enced a steamed assortment of Chinese dishes in a tra-ditional meal known as dim sum, sweet tender sea scal-lops, and the taste of preserved egg.

Although Kelly has just begun to scratch the itch brought on by the travel bug, she has decided to start experimenting with new tastes from the comfort of her own kitchen. Whether it’s a creamy coconut-curry noo-dle soup, bite-sized mini-veggie lasagnas or the sugary

sweetness of pumpkin bread pudding, she is mastering the art of cooking one day at a time. The crystal clear im-ages posted online of her tasty creations are enough to make you wonder if there’s anything that this girl can’t be successful at. Nearly a decade has passed since the Class of 2003 ruled the hallways of Morristown-Hamblen East High School. At some point in that period of time, the word success has taken on a new meaning. Success isn’t achieved by moving hundreds of miles away from the place that you grew up; it can be found just as easily through short trips to bigger cities and foreign countries that allow you to return to East Tennessee remembering why you call it home. Success doesn’t arrive on a paycheck; it comes from finding joy in what you do, rather than in what

you’re paid to do it. Success, however, does involve find-ing happiness. It’s the kind of happiness that tickles your taste buds, wets your appetite, and induces a hunger for more. Just like everyone in her graduating class expect-ed, Kelly Bush found exactly that --- the taste of success.

Dr. Frank Ellis and Dr. Bill Black are among an elite squad of surgeons who are using the da Vinci system to perform minimally invasive hysterectomies and other gynecologi-cal procedures. The pair who are with Premier Women’s Health Specialists and Elite Women’s Health Specialists have completed a combined 150 hours of advanced edu-cation, module completion, labs, observation, orientation, and proctored cases to become fully credentialed to per-form the procedures. “We know the importance of con-tinued advanced surgical training, and want to be sure to offer our patients the latest minimally invasive options,” stated Black. Both Ellis and Black have worked on cases with Dr. Michael Fields, who has received national recog-nition for the work he has done with the da Vinci System.

The daVinci Robotic Assisted Surgery System first sur-faced about 10 years ago and was primarily used for urol-ogy procedures. Since that time it is becoming a gold standard for certain gynecological procedures such as hysterectomies. In the Knoxville area, it us estimated that 80% of hysterectomy procedures are being performed using the da Vinci system. The system takes minimally invasive to the next level. The range of motion of the da Vinci is more flexible than the human hand, which means

Local OB/GYN Surgeons Now Performing da Vinci Robotically Assisted Surgery

smaller incisions, less blood loss, and faster recovery. “We have been amazed at the proven advantages of doing certain gynelogical procedures robotically for our patients,” stated Ellis.

Patients such as Sabrina Maples rave about the ease of the procedure. “I couldn’t believe how small my scars were, or how fast I was ready to come home from the hospital. Within eight hours of the surgery I was walk-ing the halls and ready.” Currently the patients are hos-pitalized overnight, but the surgeons expect da Vinci performed hysterectomies to become a day surgery procedure soon.

Currently, the procedure is being performed at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, a sister facility to Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System. There is a lot to be said about having a local physician, someone you know, taking care of you. This option gives patients a choice on procedures performed by local surgeons.
