Mary has worked on costumes, props, painted set and stage, helped with striking set, hung posters to advertise, worked as an usher and helped with con-cessions.

Through her love of children and fostering a love of theatre and the arts, Mary has helped with Library Days, worked on 3 of Encore’s Young Star Series Mu-sicals and is the Organizational Manager for Lakeway Children’s Choir. Her favorite role on stage has been Edith Ellington in First Baptist of Ivy Gap.

Mary is a member of the Encore’s Volunteer Club and is a Company Member for Encore.

Each Year, one vol-unteer who has sacrificed their time and talents in un-paralleled fashion, is recognized with the “James Templin Volunteer of the

Year Award and Mary is the 2010 recipient. Mary was quoted as saying “I love all things related to the theatre. I have raised my kids backstage. I want them to have a love for the theatre as much as I do. I want them to know it is not just being on stage, or having the lead role that is important. Sometimes the stars of the show are never seen in a spotlight.”

Mary Wallen receives the James Templin Volunteer of the Year Award.

Mary Kate (Wilburn) Wallen was born and raised in Grassy Fork, TN. Her parents J.D. and Brenda Wil-burn still live there. Mary first found a love of the stage as a senior in 1990 at Cosby High school when she appeared as a postulate in The Sound of Music with the Newport Theatre Guild.

Mary Graduated from WSCC in 1995 with her RN degree and now works at Morristown Hamblen and Jefferson Memorial Hospital’s Day Surgery and En-doscopy Lab Departments. “I love being a nurse and helping people who are sick or hurting,” she says.

Mary is married to Troy Wallen, they reside here in Morristown with their 2 wonderful children Daniel age 13 and Hannah Grace age 10, and she is so hap-py to share the joy of theatre with them.

After a 10 year hiatus from the stage she returned along with her daughter in an ensemble role in En-core’s production of Annie and there she fell in love with the Encore Family and has never left.

Mary has done it all from being on stage to behind the scenes. She has been a stage manager, house manager, worked in box office, light board operator, back stage hand, and fly operator.

The Daily Bread is a non-profit organization that serves hot meals to the people in need in our community. The Daily Bread runs solely off of donations and many volunteers such as Linda Shockley, David Shockley, Dan Carbaugh, Bill Mitchell and Frank Bosland pictured above.

Monday through Saturday, 52 weeks a year, the Daily Bread serves over 100 meals for lunch and dinner, and during the times of an economic crisis more people have relied on the Daily Bread to end their hunger. Donations of food and money are needed to assist

with the daily operations of The Daily Bread and since the economic downturn, people haven’t donated as much and they need your help, to donate or volunteer please call 423-581-9231.

First Love on Main, a new ministry of First Baptist Church is offering free dental services to the lower in-come residents of our community. The clinic is located at 225 W. Main Street in downtown Morristown next to the New Hope Recovery Center. The new ministry began as a vision of First Baptist Pastor, Dr. Dean Haun. He challenged the Church to give back to the commu-nity and to be the hands and feet of Jesus in expressing His love to the Morristown area.

Pastor Haun told his congregation, “Whenever the Bi-ble says Jesus was “moved with compassion” He always responded in some physical tangible way. It was never just an emotional feeling of sorrow or empathy. If we are going to strive to be like Him we must give and we must serve. We have no other option.”

Pastor Haun shared with the Church his vision about having a place where lives could be touched and transformed by the love of Christ outside the walls of the church. The First Baptist members took those words and that challenge literally.

A family within the Church bought the down-town building the clinic is using and donated it to the Church for use as a ministry center. The dentists offer their time and talents to help those who can not afford dental insurance or dental services. The Church welcomes other dentists or hygienists who would like to volunteer as well.

Numerous volunteers and groups have come to the center to do repairs and improvements. “There have been so many volunteers who have given their time and abilities to this project,” Pastor Haun said. “We have had painters, plumbers, electricians, technicians, computer programmers, cleaners, landscapers, our Church youth group, groups from other churches…it has truly been amazing.”

FIRST LOVE on MAIN new ministry of First Baptist Church

When Baptist Hospital merged with St. Mary’s hospital a memorial fund of $2 million dollars was set up for Tennessee Medical Missions. First Baptist of Morristown is among the first recipients of these mission dollars. Dr. Haun had this to say about that grant, “We are so incredibly grateful for the Baptist of TN and the Ten-nessee Baptist convention for making available to us a grant that we might open our evangelistic dental clinic. “We believe we will see many people come to know Christ through this ministry as we purposefully share the gospel. “

In addition to dental ser-vices the new center will house the Christian Men and Women’s Job Corp assisting people in finding jobs and developing re-sumes and job skills. The center will also house the VITA (Volunteers In Tax Assistance) program for low income earners assist-

ing with income tax forms and preparation. Legal Aid will also be using the building; letting the community know about the services they offer.

The center hopes to add a Christian drug and alcohol recovery program in the future. Boni Frazee has been named as the Director of the new downtown ministry center. The hours of the center will be subject to the schedule of the dentists.

Morristown native and blues harmonica virtuoso, Wal-lace Coleman, will return to the stage at Rose Cen-ter on February 12 for what has become his annual homecoming concert. The concert will be a CD Re-lease Event. “Blues in the Wind – Remembering Robert Jr. Lockwood” a brand new release on Coleman’s Ella Mae label. Girls Inc, Mildred Haun ‘Hawks Done Gone’ performance - Feb 25girls ages 7-15 will perform ‘Hawk’s DONE COME AND GONE”. The script is based on a book of short stories of Appalachian writer Mildred E Haun. Haun grew up in Hamblen and Cocke counties in the early 20th century. She went to Vanderbilt college set on studying medicine to become a midwife and enrolled in a writing class that altered her life’s path.This performance culminates a grant awarded to artist/singer Karen Webber Gilat to partner with Girls Inc to give voice to feminine characters created by Haun.The girls of Girls Inc also created artwork for the pro-grams and posters as well as publicity for the project

Volunteer of the Year Award goes to...

Shirley HoltShirley grew up on a small farm in Dan-dridge, but has lived and worked in

Morristown most of her life. In her early 30s, with two young children, and a husband, she left the

workforce to seek a college degree. She received a degree from Walters State Community College with a 4.0 GPA, then transferred to the University of Tennessee. She completed her B.S. degree in Business from the University of Tennessee, graduating with a GPA of 3.6.

Shirley loves East Tennessee and this community and has been involved in several organizations over the years. She was a member of the Wal-

ters State Advisory Board for Students in Free Enter-prise for several years and was a member of the South Hamblen County Volunteer Fire Department acting as secretary/treasurer and later as vice president. Over many years, she has been associated with the United Way of Hamblen County and worked on annual campaigns during recent years and served as an officer on the board of directors. Shirley lights up when commenting about what a wonderful organization the United Way is and the tremendous job they do in helping people of our community.

When Girls Incorporated invited Shirley to join their board several years ago, she was excited to do so. This year will be her eleventh year with Girl’s Inc. and has served on almost every committee. Last year she filled the role of President The Taste of Morristown, which has evolved and grown over the years, has always been one of her favorite committees.

In January of this year, Shirley was most humbled and honored to receive the Girls Incorporated Volunteer of the Year Award for the 2nd time, she received this award in 2005 as well. The Girls Incorporated mission is to inspire girls to be strong, smart, and bold. Through the programs and guidance offered, you can see these girls and young ladies build self-esteem, confidence, and attain a can-do attitude. Girls Incorporated has a great staff, many of whom were former Girls Incorporated members, as well as a wonderful, fun, hard-working board of directors, says Shirley, we are blessed to live in a community where people are so concerned, caring and generous with their time and resources.

Shirley is married to Chuck Holt, a golf enthusiast and has two chil-dren, Angela, a genetics counselor in Portland, Oregon, and Jim, who owns his own small business here in Morristown (Jim Holt Bobcat and Bushhogging). Before and since being retired from her HR job with Union Camp, Shirley wears many hats, wife, mom, grandmother and volunteer of the year, congratulations Shirley

The Country Club, Inc. has served the commu-nity since 1955 as not only a recruitment tool but also a recreational/social alternative for the Lakeway area.

Will be held on Saturday night February 12 and fea-ture our “Chicago Steakhouse Night” a la carte menu featuring selections offered in some of the traditional Chicago restaurants and no Valentine’s Dinner would be complete without dessert to end the evening. Mem-bers have enjoyed Towering Red Velvet Cake, Banana-Pudding Cheesecake and Crème Brule just to name a few of the sweet endings offered on this special event.

HerLove of...Teaching

is a life-long citizen of Hamblen County. Her early memo-ries are of barefoot summers, harsh winters, and piano recitals in the spring. Kim attended West Elementary and loves recalling spe-cial teachers like

Kathryn Rader, Louise Gregory, Jim MacLeay, and Ms. Mullins in the library. Lincoln Heights Middle School also provided Kim with a won-derful education and her high school years were spent right where she teaches now at West High School. I love this place says Kim. Special educators not only impressed upon her the importance of a sound education but also shared with her their passion for learn-ing: a passion that she shares today with her students.

After graduating from Morristown West High School, Kim spent three quarters at WSCC. From there she transferred to East Tennessee State University and planned to study busi-ness. After a difficult semester studying the wrong subject, she decided to transfer once again to the University of Ten-nessee where she received a degree in English Literature. When she decided that teaching was what she really wanted to devote herself to, she went to Carson-Newman College as she worked to obtain her teaching certification. Education has always been a part of my life, says Kim and she intends to continue learning and teaching others.

Kim has now taught at Morristown West High School for ten years much to the delight of many West High students...

Goody’s reopening under new ownershipsame location, better name brands

Goody’s, which was founded in 1953 by the Good-friend family, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy June 2009. Stage Stores, purchased the Goody’s trademark, including its name and logo is re-opening in the same location in College Square Mall with a tentative date of March 17th, 2011. The store will carry some of the same brands as before but will also offer higher end name brands as found in their stores in Rogersville, Newport and Jefferson City.

Stage Stores Mission Statement is “Our mission is to be America’s leading small town and neighborhood retailer dedicated to delivering desirable brand name family apparel with exceptional value and service!” Their Corporate Headquarters is located in Hous-ton, Texas with over 780 stores in 39 states across the US with approximately 13,000 employees. They anticipate opening 35-40 new stores in 2011.

The National Certification Committee announced Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System’s Heart, Lung & Vascular Center has met the criteria for AACVPR Program Certification . “I want to commend the entire staff of the Heart, Lung and Vascular Center for their work in achieving this important certification, as part of our ongoing focus on quality patient care,” stated Richard Clark, President and CAO MHHS.

Only a few hundred Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilita-tion out-patient programs in the United States have re-ceived this prestigious certification. MHHS is the only lo-cal program with this certification. “We are honored by the recognition, and feel it is another step in providing excellent patient care, every patient, every time,” added Tommy Bain, Director Heart, Lung and Vascular Center. The certification process has taken over a year, and in-cluded chart reviews and extensive data collection along with having the right technology in place. The MHH Foun-dation played a crucial role in the technology. Donations from the 2008 Heart Gala funded a technologically ad-vanced monitoring system for specific use in the Cardio/Pulmonary Rehab.

The goal of Program Certification and Recertification is to assure the facility is meeting the essential guidelines and standards of care. The purpose of the certification process is to:

• Review programs against published standards and guidelines• Benchmark for providing best practice, program quality and improving patient outcomes• Provide an objective assessment of adherence to updated clinical standards and guidelines• Provide a systematic approach to quality care• Promote a culture of quality patient care • Provide patients with a benchmark to compare cardiovascular and pulmonary rehab programs for quality care• Provide best practice guidelines for quality standards.

Each program is reviewed by the AACVPR National Certification Committee and the AACVPR Board of Di-rectors for final approval. The committee then presents the hospital with a certificate. The mission of AACVPR is to reduce morbidity, mortality, and disability from car-diovascular and pulmonary diseases through education, prevention, rehabilitation, research, and aggressive dis-ease management.

**Founded in 1985, the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR) is dedicated to the professional development of its members, through information, networking, and educational opportunities. Central to the mission is the improvement in the quality of life for patients and their families.
