Hello! Morristown ~ a celebration of our family, friends and neighbors...

Sam started his career at the age of 13 as a bag boy with Goodson & Mayes grocery store which was located on West 3rd North Street.

While dating, Sam s̓ wife Sharon learned the meat trade by helping Sam cut the meat for the display case at Goodson and Mayes so that Sam could have his work done in time for them to both attend the UT Football games. Sam received his degree at Carson Newman in business administration, and Sharon graduated from UT with a degree in sociology.

Sam always wanted his own meat market and had thought of purchasing Goodson & Mayes; he decided instead to use the extra plot of land behind his home on West Andrew Johnson Highway to build his dream that would have never become a reality without the support of wife Sharon. Sam says, “I owe all of this to Sharon; she has enabled me to do all I have done... without Sharon, none of this would have happened.”

Sam and Sharon Moore opened Sam s̓ Meat Cleaver July 28th, 1978. Sam continued to work at the Department of Human Services during the day while Sharon took charge of the daily operations of running the meat market, with Sam s̓ help on the weekends.

By 1984 the business was thriving, enabling Sam to quit his day job to work full time at the market. Over the years theyʼve had many wonderful employees; they currently have two of their best, Ashlee Williams and Danielle Lemasters.

Sam & Sharon s̓ son Matthew is a CPA with Purkey, Carter, Compton, Swann and Carter, here in Morristown. Son Russell lives in Nashville, working for the State Comptroller s̓ offi ce with wife Jill who also helped at the market during holidays. With thoughts of her boys working summers and holidays at the “Cleaver,” Sharon remembers when Matthew used to run the cash register as a 5 year old.

customers, new and old.

Sam & Sharon

Sam s̓ most famous customers over the years have included Rusty Wallace, Con Hunley and former UT quarterback Bobby Scott. But Sam s̓ late mother, Lillie Moore, whom many of you will remember as the much loved writer of the Citizen Tribune column entitled “Around the Area” featuring local folklore, recipes and history, was truly his favorite customer. Lillie would write historical observations along the way as the entire Moore clan traveled for Sunday dinner.

Sam s̓ sister, Alice Faye Moore Morley, compiled a wonderful book of Lillie s̓ writings, which is available at the market for only $29.99.

Today, 28 years later, Sam s̓ Meat Cleaver is still very much a thriving business, with meat sales surging on Fridays and Saturdays. Their weekday lunch menu keeps satisfi ed customers coming back for more, day after day, year after year, with menu items such as their famous chicken salad, club sandwiches, hamburgers and deviled eggs.

Why does long time customer, attorney Ron Perkins, frequent Sam s̓ for lunch? Is it to run into Judge Herbert Bacon, Jack Fishman, Judge Eddie Beckner, Bill Hale, Andy Smith or Doug Rouse? Or is it to talk Indianapolis Colts or Tennessee Vols Football? It s̓ certainly not for the tomato and mustard on his silk tie and wool slacks - it must be for the best burger in town or Sharon s̓ vegetable soup!

Whether youʼre needing a rack of ribs for the weekend BBQ, a good country ham or maybe youʼd like to just like to sit back, relax and remember what it was like in the good old days to enjoy a cold drink, a tasty lunch and good company, Sam s̓ Meat Cleaver is the place.

Remember, if youʼve got your taste buds set on one of Sharon s̓ famous lunch specials ranging from homemade meatloaf and mashed potatoes to pork chops and veggies...youʼd better call to reserve yours before 10 AM because they sell out quickly!Call 423-581-2680.

Putting Their Best Foot Forward...runs in the family.

Meet George “Chuck” O. Haggard, III of Morristown. He s̓ a 45 year old single dad to son, Kyle, age 19, (entering the Air Force after graduation) and twin daughters, Tesha and Terra, age 17, (juniors at West High).

Chuck was an average runner in high school, but in 1996, his sister, Carol Haggard Wood, convinced him to seriously take up the sport. Now armed with a personal goal of completing 100 marathons, he has already completed 46, the last one being the Boston Marathon this past April. His best marathon time to date in Huntsville, Alabama was 3:18, averaging 7 minutes, 20 seconds per mile.

On a daily basis Chuck runs trails on the 13-mile loop at Panther Creek State Park. A week before a race he starts a heavy program of rice and pasta; he says 70% of his calories come from carbohydrates, which his body will burn as fuel during the mara-thon. On marathon day, Chuck s̓ diet consists of sports drinks, coffee and fruit.

This summer Chuck plans to take time off from his own running efforts to focus on training with his twin daughters to help prepare them for their senior year cross-country competition. Last fall, on their third trip to state competition, the Morristown-West High girls ̓cross-country team won the State Champion-ship. This happened just ten years after the twins ̓cousin, Jennifer Wood. helped West High to their fi rst cross-country state title.

Tesha and Terra both made the All-Conference and All-Regional teams and say their martial arts background (both have black belts) has helped in their training for running; and that they will always run to stay fi t.

Chuck says that for him, running is his therapy, an escape from the daily grind. It keeps him in focus mentally. Running appeals both to Chuck s̓ competitive and spiritual sides. He feels the sacrifi ces of our men and women serving in the Armed Forces gives him the freedom to run.

a Winning Act!

“We are truly blessed to be a part of this community!”

On one of their fi rst dates Cindi Sedlack and Ernie Husk learned that they each were daily winners of a local radio contest. It was one of those contests where they had daily winners that won a “sum-mer fun pack” with a big weekly winner of his and her Ray Ban sunglasses and a Sony Walk-man. When Ernie, who won the weekly prize, gave Cindi the “her” Ray Ban glasses.

Was it then she knew their future would be bright?

While dating, they catered a fundraiser for the Theatre Guild. It was a murder mystery dinner at Rose Center called, “Murder at Mama Mia s̓.” Cindi also played the part of Mama Mia during the night. It had been a very long and tiring night, and during the cleanup of the event, Cindi was at the kitchen sink, expressing her exhaustion, when Ernie pulled a ring out of his pocket and said, “I hope you donʼt do this very often because I donʼt usually carry these things around in my pocket.” They were married on May 22, 1992.

Ernie later opened a restaurant called “Ernie s̓,” while Cindi continued her full time job at the family business, Village Industries, Inc. She worked evenings and weekends at the restaurant, and by summer of 1993, they learned they were expecting their fi rst child. They gave up the hectic life of restaurant ownership, and on March 16, 1994, they were blessed with their fi rst son, Preston Alexander Husk; twenty-one months later, they added Spencer Franklin Husk to the family. They found a house on a dead-end street with a big fenced- in backyard, four houses down from Grammy and Papa Sedlack! Ernie then took a job with Robert Orr Sysco, the food service company. In one month, they had purchased a new home, had a new baby, and a new job for Ernie. Life has remained hectic ever since!

Cindi and Ernie both served on the Board of Directors of the Theatre Guild. Cindi has also been on the CEASE Board of Directors, on theVestry at All Saints ̓ Episcopal Church, has been involved with the Morristown Chamber of Commerce, and is currently a Chamber Ambassador. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees for All Saints ̓Episcopal School. Cindi and the children have been in several productions of the Theatre Guild. The children have done produc-tions at WSCC, Carson Newman College, and Kingsport Theatre Guild, but they havenʼt been able to get Ernie onstage yet!

In the summer of 2004, Cindi heard about another radio contest where the winners received a trip to the Macy s̓ Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City. They set out to win one of the qualifying drawings and as their luck would have it... they were the grand prize winners!

The children have always attended All Saints ̓ Episcopal School; Preston is now a rising seventh grader, while Spencer is a rising fourth grader. Both boys enjoy sports, music, and theater. Cindi, Ernie, Preston, and Spencer feel truly blessed to be a part of this community!

A REAL-LIFE READER STORY...

continued on next page...

Do you or someone you know have a story? Whether romantic, funny, interesting or heartwarming, your neighbors would like to know...

Kelly & Anthony on their wedding day July 11, 1992

she became too ill to work, he took over her daycare and kept her dream alive. With the help of his mother, Madge Davis, Anthony completed the neces-sary training to legally run the daycare and give the children the same kind of attention and love Kelly gave.

Time passed and Kelly became pregnant. After a diffi cult nine months, Kelly gave birth to a perfect baby girl, Gabrielle “Gabby” Lynn Davis.

Then in 2000, Kelly fi nally received an accurate diag-nosis. Jeanette Dalton was able to confi rmed that Kelly had Arnold-Chiari Malformation, which according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke is “a condition in which the cerebellum portion of the brain protrudes into the spinal canal”.

In 2001, Dr. Davis from Oak Ridge performed sur-gery on Kellyʼs skull which resulted in removing part of her skull and placing a patch on her brain; leaving her brain vulnerable and without protection.

After 8 weeks in and out of the hospital, Kelly came home and Anthony spent the next 3 years walking close behind Kelly to protect her from a blow to the head (which couldʼve resulted in instant death) and to catch her when she passed out unexpectedly. He also taught their daughter to do the same.

Then in 2004 tragedy hit again. Kellyʼs body rejected

Every motherʼs dream is to see her daughter marry a good man. A man who would love, honor, cherish, and keep her all the days of her life; a man who would not walk out on her when times got rough; and a man who would keep those sacred vows: “love until death do us part”.

On July 11, 1992, after 5 years of courtship, my daughter Kelly Lynn Robinson was blessed to have married such a man. His name is Anthony LeAlan Davis and this is their love story:

Kelly and Anthony met their junior year of high school (Morristown-Hamblen West High) and instantly fell in love. Five years later, they pledged their love to one another at Buffalo Trail Baptist Church.

Anthony soon received his degree as a Master Barber and began working with his father, Jimmy Davis, at Utopia West Hair Designs. Kelly received her degree in Early Childhood Development and opened Kellyʼs Kids Early Learning Center — her lifelong dream.

Kelly and Anthony were blissfully happy, but tragedy hit just ten months after they married and their world would never be the same. Kelly got sick and with each passing year, her illness grew worse. Anthony took her to specialist after specialist, but the doctors were unable to diagnose the problem.

No matter how hard times got, Anthony never stopped loving Kelly. In fact, he loved her so much that when

the patch on her brain and she was required to have yet another surgery. In 2005, Kelly, An-thony, and his sister Toni set out for The Chiari Institute in New York to repair Kellyʼs brain and rebuild her skull.

Of the wonderful things Anthony has done for my daughter, Iʼd like to share two of my fond-est; one is the Christmas Anthony brought a fully decorated Christmas tree into her hospital room so Kelly wouldnʼt feel as if sheʼd missed Christmas. The other, was the Easter when, Kelly fainted only to awake with amnesia, un-able to recognize anyone, not even Anthony, and how for hours theyʼd held each other, crying, for hours once sheʼd recovered.

Kelly and Anthony have been married for 13 wonderful, glorious, and diffi cult years. And in all that time, Iʼve never been more honored or more proud to have Anthony as my son-in-law.

Thank you Anthony, I love you, Peggy.

“conclude” that the scratching was “spread-ing it around”. Will Rogers once said, “It s̓ not what I donʼt know that gets me in trouble, but rather what I know that ainʼt so.”

In Tennesseans who are allergic to poison ivy (most poison oak is found west of the Mississippi) the urushiol stays on the skin for about 10-12 days. Therefore, our treatment is to block the allergic itching and rash until the oil “grows” off. Cortisone shots, pills or creams work quickly but must be used con-tinuously until the symptoms are gone, oth-erwise the rash can return with a vengeance.

We keep on hand in the offi ce a product called Ivy Block, which I use personally, all summer. It soaks up the oil keeping it from binding to the skin. Ivy Block gives about 4 hours protection and should be washed off with soap and hot water.

So Traci, the good news is we can prevent poison ivy and have good treatments for those unlucky enough to get it.

Thanks for your letter. Doc

Poison Ivy MythsDr. Fulk: Grandma says if I scratch poison ivy Iʼll spread it. Is this true or false? Traci.

Traci, great question and one I answer in the offi ce frequently. Poison ivy and its cousin poison oak cause a red, itchy rash called rhus dermatitis. These green, 3 leaved plants (leaves of three, leave them be) produce uru-shiol, an oily liquid that after contact binds chemically to the skin.

In approximately 20 minutes the oil is fi xed and canʼt be moved around by scratching. So the answer to your question is, false, you donʼt spread poison ivy by scratching. How-ever, oil on non-skin objects such as clothes, tools, gloves and even pet hair can continue to get on skin and cause trouble for days or weeks.

Also, not all areas of skin react to the uru-shiol at the same rate. Breaking out at day 2 and 3 after a single exposure lead grandma to

Crystal Lost 111 Pounds in One Year!

Crystal Scott of Morristown, age 33was a size 26, now a size 12total lost: 111 lbs since March 2005

CONGRATULATIONS CRYSTAL!

Her Story...Crystalʼs weight became a problem quickly after marriage and the birth of her two children. Like many overweight mothers, Crystal feared her children would be teased about their motherʼs weight; also, as a young woman, Crystal wanted to fi t into attractive, trendy clothing; so for her familyʼs sake and her own health and wellbeing, Crystal desperately wanted to lose weight.

Having attempted many weight loss methods before, Crystal had some success taking off a few pounds; however, she could never stick to those plans and therefore quickly regained what sheʼd lost. Then, a friend encouraged her to join Weight Watchers.

Crystal and her brother joined Weight Watchers together; they at-tended the weekly meetings and supported each other every step of the way. Today her brother has lost almost 90 pounds, using the Weight Watchers plan.

The meetings are a very important part of Weight Watchers, Crystal says. She looks forward to the meetings because of the support of others going through the same thing; itʼs like a big family.

Crystal says one of the best moments in her life was when her 7 yea old daughter Grace hugged her recently, and said, “Mommy! I can put my arms all the way around you, and thereʼs still room left!!!” That was an awesome moment!

“Until losing weight with Weight Watchers, I never had confi dence or much self-esteem; but after taking off the weight naturally, itʼs really boosted my confi dence, and I feel better about myself than I ever have. I can play with my children without becoming out of breath....... and my husband says itʼs like having a new wife!”

“I seriously encourage anyone with a weight problem, to join Weight Watchers,” says Crystal. Itʼs a life-changing experience!”

Priscilla with LMU instructors - graduation 1982

from RN to CEOGrowing up in Hancock County, Priscilla Mills was the infamous “middle child” among

fi ve siblings. Her parents were a Christian farm couple who instilled in their children a deep faith in God, an abiding love of family, and the enjoyment of simpler times.

Priscilla was especially close to her older brother Dennis; he constantly challenged her to “make a difference, and be the bestyou can be.” When the other girls were baking and sewing, Priscilla was hoeing a corn row or competing in 4-H tobacco judging...”and we won, too,” she says, fl ashing a broad smile. She loved to play basketball, and by the fourth grade, was sure sheʼd be a coach or perhaps a nurse, either way, she knew she wanted to help people.

The life lessons Priscilla learned as a child in a rural setting obviously fueled her meteoric rise to a career she fi nds so stimulating today, that as the Chief Executive Offi cer of Lakeway Regional Hospital, in Morristown, a position she has enjoyed since 2001.

The long road leading to the CEOʼs offi ce included some very busy years of study at LMU, plus an exhausting and com-prehensive focus on nursing. She began as a nurseʼs aide in high school, then moved through all phases

of the nursing fi eld including stints in CCU, ICU, ER, Ob/Gyn, Med/Surg, Psych, and Oncology. Case management taught her to balance the quality side with the fi nancial factor. She was

house supervisor and supervisor of ancillary services, then became Director of Nursing, and Assistant CEO in 2000.

Tragedy impacted her life and opened her eyes to the importance of living life to the fullest. In 1986, while pregnant with her son, her father suddenly died at age 61, with a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Then in 2001, her brother Dennis suffered a sudden and fatal heart attack.

Priscilla is greatly inspired by her mother, now 73, who has always been there for her. Her sisters, Margaret and Trish, are also nurses, and her brother James still farms the fam-ily soil. Priscilla has been married for 19 years to Dean, a civil engineer at TVA, who is supportive of her goals and demanding schedule. They spend all their leisure hours together, and enjoy playing golf. They have three children (Jessica, Justin and Jonathan) and four grandchildren.

Priscilla is actively involved with the West High Boosters, Girls, Inc., Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, HC Excell, EMS, and just fi nished a

6-year term on the United Way board.

Priscilla is living her dream. She relies on her belief in God. She has a supportive board, a great management staff,

terrifi c physicians, and constant corporate encouragement. Priscilla is one of only six female CEOʼs in the corporate network. She just won the “Continuing Excellence” Achievement Award, based on Lakewayʼs superior track record.

Every day she utilizes the lessons she learned in early childhood. She gets to do it all: Sheʼs a coach, specializing in team-building, recruiting staff and physicians, and fulfi lling needs in the community... and as a lifelong nurse she knows the comfort a

patient experiences from a caring heart and compassionate spirit.

Priscilla is making a difference, and being

the best she can be...

and life doesnʼt get any better than that.

We are constantly subjected to environmental toxins. Some of the toxic dangers we are exposed to are not so obvious. For instance, even though DDT was banned, we still export it and then import the food grown on the contaminated soil. The National Academy of Sciences estimated the average American ingestion of pesticides such as DDT (in food sources alone) to be around 40 milligrams per year and also estimates that we carry about 100 milligrams stored in body fat.

Reducing caloric intake can facilitate the detoxifi cation process and rest the liver, but fasting can release the toxins from the fatty tissue too quickly. If detox pathways are not running effi ciently, released toxins are left to recirculate and redeposit in body tissues. When this happens, it will trigger symptoms often times mistaken for allergies and cause sensitivities to many different foods or one’s environment.

For best results, reduce caloric intake (without fasting) and add a good detox support supple-mentation product to the regimen. A good unsweetened protein powder such as Hi-Pro or Total Green can be benefi cial for maintaining blood sugar while reducing calories. An effi cient detox supplement such as Total Systemic D-Tox or Total Liver D-Tox will address seven detox pathways in the body – liver, bowel, blood, lungs, lymph, skin and kidneys.

Which Church Should I Go To?By Pastor James HarmelingFirst Baptist Church, Morristown

Early in my marriage, I often went to the grocery store for my wife armed only with a general list of things to purchase. The list included such categories as cereal, peanut butter, bread, deodorant, and toilet paper but nothing more in detail. I would then walk down aisles and aisles of endless options of each item unsure if I got exactly what I needed.

Many times, my wife had to return things I purchased to exchange for the right one.

Have you ever felt that way about selecting a church to attend? It can be a confusing and uncertain venture with little of no guidelines to give assistance. For some, they choose the denomination they were raised in. For married couples with different denominational backgrounds, they may select a new church as a neutral ground to keep peace in the home. I understand all those dynamics, but let me offer some helpful guidelines I believe to be important in fi nding a church home.

Find a place where you learn the Bible and grow in your faith in God

The whole point of a church should be to grow in your relationship with the Lord. The Bible tells us how to do that. Therefore, locate a congregation that is studying the Bible and treating it as God s̓ Word for us today. This specifi cally means that the gospel of Jesus Christ is clearly spelled out and there is no confusion over how a person goes to heaven. You may attend a church where you have a lot of friends, but if you or your family are not growing stronger in your relationship with the Lord, the purpose of the church has not been fulfi lled.

Find a place where the people are friendly

It is important to be around people who are enthusiastic about life and the Lord, who are helpful in assisting others in their issues and struggles, and who are caring. No church is perfect and at times even friendly and caring churches can appear unfriendly. Nevertheless, when checking a church out give the people there a chance to get to know you. In order to make friends, you have be friendly yourself! Most people who attend a church as a newcomer do so because a friend invited them. They usually remain and become part of a church for the same reason. They have friends that go there.

Find a place where the people are actively ministering

A church is not a place to sit and be idle. It should be an active place where the members of the congregation are seeking to make a difference in their community and the world for the Lord. Talk to the leaders of the church you are visiting and fi nd out what they want to the church to accomplish and where they see it heading.

These three guidelines are a good place to start. A person cannot grow in his or her relationship with the Lord in isolation. They practice love, kindness, gentleness, patience, and self-control in the context of a group. The local church is that group and my prayer is that those reading this will take the next step to become part of a local congregation.
