AN OLD-FASHIONED SHABBAT

FAMILY DINNER AND SERVICE

Friday -Evening JANUARY 31st

Dear Friends,

Recently, I was asked to join the National Rabbinic Cabinet of the United Jewish Appeal. I accepted the invitation to join this national board, composed of rabbis from several movements and ideologies. The cabinet serves as the rabbinic arm of the UJA and promotes the unity of the Jewish people in its efforts to support the needs of Jews of Israel and, indeed, throughout the world. The Rabbinic cabinet was formed by our own Reform movement's Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver and Jonah B. Wise in 1939, and is the oldest constituent organization within the UJA.

I attended the Rabbinic cabinet meeting early last month. This 3-day meeting was a most exciting time of learning, fellowship and renewed commitment. We were briefed on the latest developments in the Peace Process, the ongoing revolutions in the Soviet Union and its impact on Aliyah to Israel as well as the ever-growing Jewish renewal movement throughout Eastern Europe. Much discussion also focused on Israel's needs and concerns as she attempts to absorb and integrate the hundreds of thousands of Soviet Jews who are coming to Israel to begin new lives. This modern day Exodus is one of the greatest stories (maybe even miracles) of Jewish history. And part of the study aspect of our program,. , focused on the Quincentennial Anniversary ofthe Expulsion of our People from Spain. (Our Congregation will focus on this anniversary this spring as part of our Scholar-In-Residence I Program, "Discovering Judaism After Generations of Absence: The Marrano Experience and Its Contemporary Relevance").

But much of the tone and discussions at this conference focused on the recently released

' Council of Jewish Federation 1990 National Jewish Population Survey. The

results of this survey were startling and deeply troubling to all who are involved with and care about the quality of Jewish life in America. This survey has been the focus of every Jewish Meeting that I have attended in recent months as well it should. I believe it merits study and discussion by all of us.

The survey focused on three major areas: demography, that is how many of us are there, what age, sex, marital status, household type, education level, occupation, and, most important, whom do we marry and how do we raise our children; geography, where do we live and where did we come from; and Jewish identity, a broad category seeking information about our affiliations with and participation in Jewish communal life and practice.

What is clear from this study is how much has changed in American Jewish life in the past twenty years, the date of the last study. Most startling of all is the very high rate of intermarriage, the declining rate of conversion into Judaism, the alarming number of Jews formally converting out of Judaism, and the number of our people who have chosen no religious identity or affiliation for their children.

I believe our community can no longer afford to waste valuable time and limited resources on talking about how to prevent the ever changing realities of Jewish life; rather, we must all focus our collective wisdom, passion, love, caring, and insights on how to creatively fashion a strong, commited, knowledgeable, open, embracing, and welcoming community ... a community that seeks to include and not exclude, a community dedicated to creating positive, dynamic, exciting memories for all its members.

Our community and our Temple will, I am certain, rise to the challenge and opportunities the CJF study forces us to confront.

With every best wish to you and your loved ones for a happy, healthy and fulfilling 1992.

B'Shalom, Rabbi David Straus

Aging Awareness Committee __

Friday, January 10, 1992 CRITICAL ISSUES FORUM

presents PAUL ARMSTRONG

Chairman, New Jersey Bloethlcs Commission

"From Quinlan to Cruzan: The Courts, the Constitution, and the Right to Ole"

We are delighted to welcome to our congregation Paul Armstrong, Chairman of the New Jersey Bioethics Commission, who will duscuss ·From Quinlan to Cruzan: the Courts, the Constitution, and the Right to Die."

This program is the second in a series sponsored by our Aging Awareness Committee on the right to die, and other questions surrounding termination of treatment for terminally ill or critical patients. In December, Rabbi Richard Address, director of the UAHC Committee on Bioethics spoke on Assisted Suicide: A Jewish Response to Final Exit.

Continuing the series our Aging Awareness Committee will sponsor two Sunday Morning Torah Brunches, on January 26th and February 9th. These will be working sessions, and will include information on how to make a living will for you or a family member.

About our Speaker

Paul W. Armstrong, Esquire, is Chairman of the New Jersey Bioethics Commission, and served as counsel to the families of Karen Ann Quinlan and Nancy Ellen Jobes before the Supreme Court of New Jersey, and as Amicus Curiae in the case of Nancy Beth Cruzan. He is a widely published author, holding an M.A. in history from the University of Dayton, a J.D. from the University of Notre Dame, and an LL.M. from the New York University School of Law. Project Haftarah Unlike Judaism, Islam demands perfect obedience to the laws of Mohammed. Christi·

anity demands perfect faith and belief in order to gain the hereafter. Buddhism demands that one must reach inward and find within oneself perfect peace and harmony. Judaism, on the other hand, demands ... action.

Our reflgion tells us that we must be active and ·00 Mitzvot" in order to improve the world. There are 613 points to this set of instructions. They are known as the "Taryag Mitzvot" according to the method of Maimonides. 248 are positives (Do's) and 365 are negatives (Don'ts). One of the positives, ·00 write your own Torah", is one of the most difficult to fulfill because so few of us know how to "Write our own Torah". The closest we can come to that, I believe, is to write our name in to the Torah.

It gives me great pleasure, then, to inform you that I have begun a ·Haftarah Scroll· project.

Each Bar or Bat Mitzvah at Har Sinai chants his or her Haftarah from ·Neviim· ... the Books of Prophets_ All B'nai Mitzvah will always remember their Haftarah portion.

I have managed to secure a new Haftarah scroll and would like to give each Bar and Bat Mitzvah the opportunity to affix their Hebrew name at the head of the appropriate chapter (this will be done by a Scribe) and in addition to affix their signature ... and their Bar or Bat Mitzvah date .. .in English at the beginning of the Scroll, where space has been left blank for this purpose, for an everlasting Honorial.

A ·Siyum" service is in the planning for a Friday evening Shabbat service sometime in January or February to commemorate the first set of names to be signed into the Temple's first Haftarah scroll.

In December aU parents of the B'nai Mitzvah for the past four years received a special invitation affording them the opportunity to place their children's names in the Scroll. From this time on, it will become a part of the ritual at Har Sinai Temple for each and every Bar or Bat Mitzvah to carry the Haftarah Scroll into the Congregation during the Shabbat Service. In addition, every Bar and Bat Mitzvah will chant his or her Haftarah portion directly from the Scroll •.. a Scroll which includes the vowels, punctuation, and cantillation (trope).

The privilege of adding a name to one's Haftarah chapter is not limited to our recent B' Nai Mitzvah. Anyone who has ever chanted a Haftarah and would like to be inscribed in the new scroll may contact the Cantor at the Temple.

Stuff And Nonsense --------

It's the start of the new year, 1992, and a great time to start becoming more involved in HSTY. In the upcoming months, we have a ski trip, basketball game, and Youth Group Service to look forward to.

Everyone who went bowling last month can tell you it was a fun filled afternoon of some great competition on the lanes.

Another exciting JFTY Conclave took place last month at Kutz Camp in Warwick, New York. If you'd like more info on JFTY happenings, contact Matt Dickson.

The baking continues as HSTY works along with the Temple Social Action Committee providing cookies for the dinners for the homeless housed in the motels along the Route One corridor. If you can lend a hand, get in touch with Stacy Feinstein.

Hope everyone has a terrific new yearll Until next month ...

NFTY/JFTY PROGRAMS FOR THE SUMMER OF '92

Now, more than ever, we need to offer our high school age youth exciting, fun and meaningful Jewish identity and self-esteem building experience. NFTY, our Reform Movement's National Youth Program of which our youth group HSTY is a member, offers several superb summer programs that will help ensure that our generation of teens will be proud of themselves and their people, energized far youth leadership, and inspired to deepen their commitment to Reform Judaism.

This summer, high school students from temples all over New Jersey will be traveling to Israel for the exciting six-week JFTY Safari In Israel, a summer program spon-

sored by the Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Participants will hike, climb, swim, walk, sing, dance, eat, shop, play and laugh their way across Israel as they build lifelong friendships with people from all over New Jersey, the United States and Israel. The safari will explore Israel's major cultural, archeological and historic sites, and offer participants the chance to discover Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and the Galilee, and Kibbutz Yahel, to name but a few of the exciting destinations. A summer in Israel can be a transforming experience for high school students, and no one should miss this exciting and memorable journey of discovery and friendship. The safari departs from New York in late June and retums in mid-August. Scholarship assistance is available through your

congregation and the UAHC. For more information, speak to your Rabbi or call James Gelsey, NFTY Advisor to JFTY, at (201) 599-0080.

The NFTY leadership institute UAHC Kutz Camp in Warwick, New York is unlike any camp or program in North America. Each summer, a dynamic campus style community is structured solely for the needs and interests of high school aged people from Reform Congregations in North American, Europe and Israel.

Generous scholarship support is available for all NFTY programs. Again, for further information, contact the Rabbi, James Gelsey (JFTY Director at 201-599-0080), or the National NFTY office, 212-249-0100.

Religious School Reports --------------- by Ann Ka1UU'ek

The Har Sinai "X" Factor As we begin 1992, it's a good time to look back and reflect, and think ahead and plan. When

we look back I factor in the "X" and find we have had an eXtraordinary four and a half months. It is eXactly halfway through our school year and we anXiously look forward to the neXt few eXciting months.

There are few schools that eXist and run eXactly as you might eXpect. The last few months have been better than what I had hoped, and that's not an eXaggeration! Being educational director at Har Sinai has eXpanded on my eXperiences. Hopefully our school is eXerting some influence on the children and eXposing them to the broad eXpanses of Judaism. To eXplain the "X" factor further, the siXth graders at Yardley eXchanged their thoughts and ideas with me when I was in their class. We eXplored the best things about Hebrew School and they were eXcited about their comments. I would like in turn to share some of their eXclusive impressions, eXpressions and eXclamations using the "X" factor.

Samara Shapiro: "Hebrew School is eXtremely eXciting." Michael Levine: "It's eXhilarating, when you pass a prayer: Brian Cooper: "I like eXamining a new prayer because it eXercises your brain." Andrew Palsky: "Har Sinal has an eXcellent teaching staff: Matt Werner: "Hebrew School is eXciting!" Jared Mass: "Hebrew School is an eXtravaganza and the teachers put in eXtra time to help

us: Colin Bushnell: "It's eXtraordinary!" Without eXaggerating too much, and being too eXcessive or eXtreme, I think I'll eXit and

eXpress my very best wishes to you for an eXceptional new year.

Upcoming Events January 12, 1992 - Mid-Winter Arts Festival- On Sunday morning, Har Sinai Religious

School will present the product of afternoon clubs, including a display of art work and a special dramatic presentation.

January 17, 1992 - "Alice in Wonderland" will be performed by our Confirmation students and directed by Danny Siegel. Come for Family Shabbat services and then enjoy dessert and

,a theater adaptation of a favorite play with a Jewish twist.

Congratulations

.... to Aaron Kimball (2nd Grade), Adam Perry (3rd Grade), Alex Sussman (2nd Grade), and Jeffrey Kahn (2nd Grade) who entered the Jewish Braille Institute's Great National Jewish Read-In. We are proud of the good job you have done in reading all those books and at the same time helping blind children and grown-ups. Thanks to you, Har Sinai Religious School contributed over $300 to this worthy cause.

Sisterhood Information Center -----

Chanukah is just past and with it Sisterhood's tenth annual Chanukah dinner. Everyone who enjoyed this favorite dinner thanks Carol Gunter and her hard-working committee for a job well done.

Kudos to our Socia'! Action Committee and its super efforts in serving all those Christmas dinners at TASK. The combined effort of Sisterhood and Temple members shows we can make a difference. All of our members should also be aware that Sisterhood provides a monthly contribution to the Social Action Committee.

We are at the middle of our year, it is a good time to note the on-going efforts of our Community Services committee. Corrine Cohen chairs this essential committee and makes sure our Oneg Shabbats are lovely each week. She is ably assisted by Elaine Lapin and Rosalie Feistel, who arrange for our members to bless the Shabbat candles, and Ann Grossman who coordinates our pulpit flowers with Amoroso's. These are women who quietly do their work behind the scenes; without them, Shabbat would not be as pleasurable.

Next, lest anyone be beset by winter doldrums - comes Sisterhood's first 50's/60's Rock 'N' Roll Party. The fun starts at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, January 25th, in the Temple Social Hall. Advance sale tickets are $25.00 per couple. The Committee has plans for dance contests and other contests for costume, etc. H you've still got a poodle skirt or granny dress stashed, this Is your opportunity to bring back the 50's or 60's! Get a group of friends together and there will be "dancin' in the street!"

On a more intellectual plane, Rabbi Straus will be reviewing A LASTING FIRE by Beverly Byrne on Wednesday, January 15th, at 7:30 p.m. at Temple.

MONTHLY SERVICE AT CARTERET ARMS

FRIDAY, JANUARY 17th Our monthly Erev Shabbat service at the

Carteret Arms, 333 West State Street, will take place on Friday, January 17th at 2:00, at the apartment of Jimmie Josephson. Please RSVP to Jimmie at 396-3001 or the Temple office.

This monthly service, led by the Rabbi and Cantor, is held on the third Friday of each month, and is open to all Temple members and non-members. It provides a wonderful way for our members who otherwise find it difficult to regularly attend services at the Temple to come together, and renew friendships, as well as meet with our Rabbi and Cantor. An Oneg ShabbatlFeliowship Period follows each service.

HOW TO WARM-UP THE SYNAGOGUE

1. Greet the people you know, but spend time with those you do not know. Make a point of getting to know one or two people to whom you have never talked before.

2. If you are not certain whether a person is a visitor or an old member, a word of greeting usually brings out the facts very quickly.

3. Who breaks the ice? Chances are that if you do not have much of an idea of who s/he is, slhe does not have much of an idea who you are either. Don't pretend to know his/her name if you really don't. Go and introduce yourself.

4. Watch for unfamiliar faces standing around looking lost. A simple hello, and welcome is greatly appreciated by newcomers to our family.

5. Take a moment to take the newcomer over to the Rabbi and Cantor for a personal word of welcome after the Service.

6. Tell guests about the various activities in our Temple. We are all justifiably proud of our Temple, and actively seek out new members and families. let's all work to make our Temple a warmer place.

CONFIRMATION CLASS GOES TO OCEAN CITY, MARYLAND FOR RETREAT WEEKEND,

JANUARY 24-26 The weekend of January 24-26 will see

our 9th and 10th grade students travel to Ocean City, Maryland along with the 9th and 10th grade students from Beth Chaim for a fabulous Confirmation Class Shabbat Retreat. Our students will be accompanied by the .Rabbi, and stay at the Carousel Inn Resort, a wonderful facility with swimming, ice skating, gamerooms, and more - located right on the boardwalk and the beach.

This promises to be a fabulous weekend of fellowship, camaraderie, fun - and hopefully even a little learning and preparation for Confirmation. The cost is $105.00 per student. Scholarship aid is available from our Youth Scholarship Funds and all requests will be held in the strictest of confidence. For further information please call the Rabbi.

HOME STUDY GROUPS Applying Jewish Ethics to Everyday

life and Business Situations Applying our Jewish Ethics to everyday

life and business situations is this year's topic for our monthly Home Study Group, led by Rabbi Straus. January's meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 8th, at 8:00, at the home of Edi and Bill Joseph in Ewing. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to the Temple office; directions will then be provided to you. For further information, please call the Rabbi.

ARE YOUR ADULT CHILDREN MEMBERS OF

HAR SINAI TEMPLE? We would like to encourage your young

adult children to become independent members of Har Sinai Temple. This may inspire them to become more involved in Temple with all the rights of members and may help them to reaffirm their Jewish identity and commitment.

Our Congregation offers a one-year free membership to all families and individuals under age 30. We also offer a reduced dues for members under age 36. We hope you will encourage your adult children to affiliate on their own. Please call the Temple office for further information or a membership packet.

PARENTS OF PERSONS WITH AIDS SUPPORT GROUP

NOW MEETS AT TEMPLE A support group for parents of persons

with AIDS, or who are HIV positive now meets at the Temple on the first and third Wednesday of each month, from 7:30-9:00pm. Our one meeting in January will take place on January 15th.

This support group, a collaborative project of the Temple and theJewish Family Service of the Delaware Valley is facilitated by laura lebenkoff, MSW, lSW, ACSW, a member of the professional staff of the JFS. There is no fee for the group. This program is being sponsored by a pilot grant from several anonymous donors.

The group is open to Temple members and non-members. Confidentiality of the participants will be maintained. If you would like further information, please call the Rabbi, or Stan Glick, (609) 882-5317, the assistant director of the Jewish Family Service.

HOSPITAL VISITS . . . WE NEED YOUR HELP

Both Rabbi Straus and Cantor Wisnia make regular visits to our community's hospitals and nursing homes to see members of our congregation. It is no "burden"on them ... they are delighted to spend time visiting and chatting. BuL.we need your help! The hospitals do not notify us when a member is admitted. We only know if someone is in the hospital if we are called. So ... please help us to better serve you. If you know a member of Har Sinai is in the hospital, call the Temple office.

Social Action News

Sahbra Jacobs This year's coat drive was a great suc

cess once again. The Social Action Committee collected about 1 10 coats, as well as gloves, scarves, boots, blankets, and miscellaneous clothing, forthe area's less fortunate.

Since many of the area's homeless and less fortunate use Mercer Medical Center as first line medical care it was thought that most of the clothing could best be used there.

When Mercer Medical was contacted, they indicated that the clothing was much needed and that they would be thrilled to receive it. Accordingly, most of the coat drive donations went to the hospital. Thanks to Teddy Brickner (Temple member) and Janet Swinton for coordinating receipt on behalf of Mercer Medical.

The remainder of the coat drive proceeds went to the Princeton Exchange Club for delivery to the families living in the hotels along the Route 1 Corridor to whom the Social Action Committee serves a hot meal on the first Thursday of the month. Upon information supplied by Connie Mercer and coordination efforts by Carol lichtenstein, we were able to supply warm coats, clothing and boots to meet the needs of specific men, women and children. We know that these donations were given directly to the persons that needed them. Thanks to Connie and Carol for their efforts on our behalf.

Thanks also to all who reached into their hearts (and closets!) to donate clothing for those less fortunate; to the Sisterhood for donating their leftovers from the Bargain Bin;to those who helped get the coats ready for distribution: Ariel Perelmuter, Gene Chertock, Ellen Kirsch, Polly Passis, Carol Gunter, Saul & Judy lehrhaupt; again, to Ariel for helping wherever it was needed; to laura Reiser for coordinating the details through the Temple office and to Michael for helping whenever it was needed and for making the deliveries to Mercer Medical for us.

DON'T MISS THIS! Sisterhood's First Annual

50's & 60's ROCK 'N' ROLL PARTY Saturday, January 25th

8:00 p.m. Chaired by Polly and Jeff Passis

SO-50 SOMETHING GROUP NOW BEING FORMED Are you 50-60 something? Do you sometimes come to Temple and feel like everyone

is much younger than you, and that the program is for families with young children? Would you like to attend social events, or Temple Programs with other members of the Temple who are also 50-60 something? You may not be alone.

Several members have recently expressed the interest in forming a group at Temple for members and friends who are 50-60 something. Such a group might join as a group in ongoing Temple Programs (sometimes it is just nice to know that there will be 2 or 3 tables of contemporaries at an event), or organize special programs or activities during the year just for those 50-60 something. What do you think?

If you would be interested in such a group, please call the Temple, or fill out the coupon at the bottom of this article. Or, call Ruth Levine, Jan Kind, Rose Movitch, or Sol Brody, who have all indicated an interest in starting such a group. We look forward to hearing from you.
