RABBINIC REfLECTIONS "In the beginning God created .... " These words set off a maelstrom that rocked the very foundation of ancient civilization itself. We are still, after 3,000 years, reeling from the effects of these seemingly simple but profoundly revolutionary words. That a people would believe that the world was created by one unified force and that creation itself proceeded in an ordered way shook the pagan belief systems. These pagan cults saw random mythological conflicts among the gods as being the origin of our world.

For the next few months, as our regular Torah portions, we will be reading the book of Genesis which begins with these words- "In the beginning God created." As the plot of Genesis unfolds, we see more and more the intent of these words. For a major theme of Genesis is that God's creation of a world in an orderly fashion places tremendous responsibility upon God's ultimate creation humankind. In every story in Genesis we see this theme of responsibility. Soon after creation, humanity was destroyed in the flood because of corruption that in a real sense is a result of irresponsibility. Noah is charged with both saving the remnants of the world and creating new civilizations therefore he was given responsibility. Further on, the matriarchs and patriarchs all had responsibilities and commitments that motivated them to higher purposes.

Because the world was created not by chance but by design, our lives have a purpose. We have been placed on earth for reason. What this reason is constitutes the bases of Judaism itself. This concept was revolutionary for its time and it still causes anxiety among so many. So many suffer the "midlife crisis" because they feel that at a certain point in life not enough has been accomplished. So many fall into depressions because they feel they are living wasted lives without reason without direction. Even the most purposeful and directed people often wonder at the value of their existence.

Judaism invented the concept of contributing something of yourself for the betterment of the community. This type of contribution gives purpose and meaning to one's life. Our purpose in being created was not simply to exist for our own self-aggrandizement or enhancement of our own personal fortunes but rather to give of ourselves for the enrichment of the community. To spend one's time only for self-improvement is an anathema to Judaism-it makes a mockery of God's intent for humanity and it smacks of the generation that was destroyed in the flood. The entire book of Genesis in this light from its first words to its last takes us through this odyssey of so many that reached out to others. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph were all men who rose to the pinnacle of their societies both financially and spirituality. They did not have to assume leadership roles that in so many instances caused them grief, yet they all rose to the task. Abraham pleaded for the citizens of Sodom and Gomorrah. He also secured an international peace treaty. Isaac also initiated peace treaties. Jacob left the security of the home of Laben in order to establish a nation. Joseph saved the Israelite people by bringing them to the land of Goshen.

All the major figures of Genesis had the opportunity to pursue lives that were self-centered. Yet they didn't. They heard within their consciousness

the divine voice that directed them to go beyond the immediate confines of their own egos. They felt the need to contribute. They felt the need to create. Just as God in the beginning created, the personages of Genesis created their own beginnings through their relationships and through their desire to improve the lot of their people, the Israelites.

When they heard the call of the Israelite people beckoning them to give of themselves they responded. Because they were in a position to help, they helped. Therefore, they fulfilled the promise of creation. This tradition of devotion and commitment of the leaders of Israel continues in the book of Exodus with the career of Moses who also heard the call and responded. Therefore when we carefully read the book of Genesis, we discover that our destinies are inextricably linked to the effort we exert in improving the condition of our people and therefore the world. This was antithetical to the pagan systems which again saw the world as a result of the whim of the gods. When we commit ourselves to a goaL When we reach out beyond who we are then the world is set in order. We defy the cynicism that erodes our sense of self and our well-being. We become created in the image of The Creator.

The book of Genesis revolutionized the way people thought of their world. The world was no more a place where survival was the only reason for existence. Rather the world held before humankind the infinite possibilities of selfgrowth and realization. The words "In the beginning God created" summarized the potential of humankind to dream of a world where each individual can aspire to become like the Creator by reaching out to others. In this for next few months we will be yet again reading this masterpiece that expresses our innermost desire to connect to others and thereby fulfill the purpose of our existence.

------ RELIGIOUS SCHOOL REPO RT ------by Susan Dorfman, Education Director

This is such a wonderful, active time of year for our Religious School! We have just completed our Fall holiday observances. Prior to Rosh Ha Shanah, our fIfth and sixth grade students had an opportunity to make their own authentic Shofrot from real ram's horns! A special thank you goes to Don and Judy Millner for providing toothbrushes for the students to clean their Shofrot for the project. Our school children also enjoyed "Pokemon" treats to celebrate a sweet new year thanks to the generosity of Rita Pepperman and Jane Zamost, and through the thoughtfulness of Lisa and Rob Seidman, every student had a snack of cookies and juice in our beautiful student-decorated Sukkah. Cantor Wisnia and Rabbi Pollack delighted all the children during the class Sukkah visits with lessons about traditional Sukkot observances.

Even though our Fall holidays have come to a close, we are busier than ever! On Sunday October 22nd, Rabbi Pollack officially began this year's ConfIrmation classes by inviting all ConfIrmation and Chavura students and parents to meet with the staffs from the Jewish Family and Children's Services and the Princeton Center for Meditation, to discuss the challenges of being a Jewish teen in a non-Jewish world.

On Sunday November 5th, our eighth-tenth grade students, teachers Tara Tengood and Laurent Levy, myself, and a few hearty parents, will travel by bus to East Brunswick, NJ to assist the New Jersey Farmers Against Hunger in harvesting crops to feed hungry families in our community. This is such a wonderful opportunity for our students to perform a ''hands-on'' mitzvah. If anyone in our congregation needs 7th-10th grade volunteers for a mitzvah project, please contact me at the Temple, and I will do my best to fInd you some volunteers!

Even though the cold weather is approaching, please mark your calendars for Sunday November 12th. A representative from UAHC Camp Harlam will meet with our 3rd-7th grade students and interested parents, to present a video, provide applications, and answer all questions about this very successful Jewish summer-camp experience.

Please make a note of two more special, upcoming school events. November is Jewish Book Month. On November 3rd-12th, our Religious School will sponsor our annual Book Fair in the capable hands of our loyal chairperson, Debbie Mannella. We will have some very unique new books this year including a gorgeous adult book on Jewish life-cycle events and holidays that would make a wonderful Chanukah gift for someone special. Also, we are very fortunate to have talented actress, and story-teller, Lisa Lipkin, visiting our school on Sunday November 19th. Parents are welcome to visit with us that day to enjoy Lisa's wonderful stories.

-P RESIDENT'S REPO RT -By Steve Cickay

Last year after'the High Holy Days, I was so impressed with the way our new rabbi, our cantor and choir had worked so well together to create a beautiful and inspiring worship experience. This year I was hopeful that they could recapture last year's magic. But I had no reason to worry. This year, the High Holy Day services were again a work of great beauty and inspiration. I want to congratulate the rabbi, the cantor and the choir for again demonstrating to our entire community what makes Har Sinai such a special congregation. The power and wit of the sermons, the spiritual resonance of the cantor's precious voice, the harmony of the choir, and the fervent congregant readings from our sacred scrolls are now treasured memories for our community that have brought all of us closer together. Even Michael commented to me how smoothly this year's holidays proceeded, with everything being accomplished on schedule with great cooperation and friendliness from all the congregants. Before we rush into the new year, we need to take the time to reflect, to give thanks, and to be proud of our rabbi, our cantor, our choir and our very special Har Sinai community.

As this month's LONG RANGE ADVISORY COMMITTEE Report, we are publishing the complete text of the speech delivered by .

Past President BARRY FROST during the Kol Nidre Service SUNDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2000

"Build Me a house that I shall dwell among them".

As you entered the synagogue this evening, on this most holy of days, perhQPs some of you gazed up at the towers that flank the main entrance to Har Sinai. If so, you may have seen the Hebrew version of these words inscribed in stone upon those towers.

Centuries ago there were two pillars, or towers, outside of King Solomon1s Temple known as the PiUar of Boaz . and the

. Pillar of Yochim . Boaz symbolized the ability of the congregation to build the Temple and make it a place of welcome and worship. Yochim symbolized the ability of the congregation to sustain the life of the Temple. To Build. To Sustain.

From King Soiomon1s Tempie to Har Sinai Temple; centuries apart in time yet so close in spirit. How it must have felt to those Har Sinai congregants who, with great hope and vision built this magnificent edifice and walked through those portals, between those two towers on their first Kol Nidre night. They must have experienced an indescribable sense of passion and pride in their success at fulfilling their dream and securing their future for generations to come. To Build. To Sustain. This synagogue, completed over seventy years ago in 1929, was the second Har Sinai Temple constructed by our venerable congregation.

The sacred words which they chose to inscribe upon these towers are both a declaration and a directive. They declare that we are here now, established and secure. And they direct us to guarantee our future with the wisdom of Solomon by supporting the twin pillars of building and sustaining Temple life.

It is in that spirit that I stand before you on this momentous evening to announce to this 143 year old congregation that we have taken a profound step toward our future. Together, we all stand at the threshold and face a 'once in 'a lifetime' opportunity to again, as our wise predecessors did in the 1920's, create history and secure our future for generations to come. I am here to announce that on September 18, 2000, our Board commissioned a feasibility study, the goal of which is to take the pulse and listen to the heart of this congregation regarding its future direction and to estimate our financial capability to make our future vision a reality.

Let me provide you with a bit of recent history of our own work which has led us to the commissioning of this study. The Long Range AdviSOry Committee, as reported in this year's Annual Report to the congregation, has conducted open meetings since its inception and has reported its activities to our Board of Trustees and to the congregation through the bulletin and mailings. The Board and Committee participated in a ViSioning workshop in April, 1999. 94% of those attending voted in favor of exploring the possibility of establishing a new presence for Har Sinai. The committee then collected and studied information about our current phYSical plant, changing demographics, local and regional developments, relocation options, and the financial realities of all possible options available. In October, 1999 a letter was sent to all congregants advising them of the conclusions of the visionaries.

In May and June of this year, 76 Har Sinai members were invited to two panel meetings. 89% of those attending which included young faces and older, newer members and third generation families, expressed the strong opinion that in order to remain a vital and viable congregation Har Sinai should explore the

....

possibility of establishing a presence at a new location, preferably along the I-95 corridor. A land search committee was formed, has begun its work and will report its progress directly to our Board.

To put our situation in a larger context, we have all watched the Jewish population expand around us and have seen every congregation in this area grow, build and expand. Well, it is time for the sleeping giant to awaken. Rabbi Larry Rubinstein, Director of Development for the UAHC has described Har Sinai as a 'Cathedral Congregation'. Har Sinai is cited in each of the three major Jewish Encyclopedias as such. Har Sinai has been a beacon of Progressive Judaism and Jewish cultural and religious life in the Delaware Valley for almost a century and a half. Now it is time for us to seize the moment and fulfill our destiny.

In that vein our Board has chosen the nationally respected and highly recommended counseling firm, Development Consultants, Inc. to conduct the Feasibility study. The firm will interview a targeted cross-section of our congregation beginning later this month. The study wi II conclude by mid November and the report of its findings will be delivered to our Board by mid December or approximately one month following the completion of the interviews. If you are called upon, I urge you to respond. If you are not designated and would like to participate, please call the Temple office.

This feasibi lity study will become our road-map. Its results will direct us to the commencement of a major Capital Campaign that

will seek to fulfill our dreams, visions and hopes for Har Sinai's future, the future of its current members and the future of generations to come.

My fellow congregants I this is a momentous evening. I stand before you as a member of this community inviting each and every one of you to join together in creating history. To build ... to sustain ... to fulfill the words inscribed on our synagogue towers.

Thank you and L'Shana Tovah.
