Join us in a celebration of the completion and first ·Signing In' ceremonial of the Haftarah Scroll on Friday evening, March 6th, at 7:30 p.m., as we begin HSTY Shabbat.

Each Haftarah (Chapter from the Books of Prophets) was carefully chosen by our Rabbis and Sages of old to compliment the portion from the Torah (the 5 Books of Moses) read that same week and has a special significance for the Sabbath in the cyde of Readings from the Scrolls. RABBI'S HOME STUDY GROUP Wednesday, March 11th

"What Can The Government Tax? What Can The Government Do

With Your Taxes?" April is just around the corner. All of us

must now face the annual task of filling out our income tax forms. What does our tradition teach about taxes? Does our tradition have a vision of an "ideal ethical tax system"? Are there legitimate and illegitimate uses of our tax money? These are just some of the issues our Home Study Group will discuss at its next meeting, Wednesday, March 11 th at 8:00 pm at the home of Rosamond and Seymour Selzer. Please RSVP to the Selzer's at 609-882-2545 and they will provide you with directions.

Our Home Study Group is led by the rabbi and is open to all adult members of our congregation. This year's theme has been Jewish ethics in everyday life. We have been reading excerpts from Meir Tamari's book WITH ALL YOUR POSSESSIONS. For further information please call the Temple.

MONTHLY SERVICE AT CARTERET ARMS

FRIDAY, MARCH 20th Our monthly Erev Shabbat service at

the Carteret Arms, 333 West State Street will take place on Friday, March 20th ai 2:00, at the apartment of Rose Movitch. Please RSVP to Rose Movitch at 695-4197 or the Temple office.

This monthly service, led by the Rabbi and Cantor, is held on the third Friday of each month, and is open to all Temple members and non-members. It provides a wonderful way for our members who otherwise find it difficult to regularly attend services at the Temple to come together, and renew friendships, as well as meet with our Rabbi and Cantor. An Oneg ShabbatlFeliowship Period follows each service.

FRIDAY MORNING SERVICES AT GREENWOOD HOUSE

Every Friday morning, beginning at 10:30, Rabbi Straus and Cantor Wisnia lead an Erev Shabbat Service for the residents of Greenwood House. They are frequently joined by Elin Hirsch, Barbara Goldberg, Than Berkman, Lynne Breslau, and Max. This half hour service is truly appreciated by the residents of Greenwood House, who show up each week in large numbers, and actively participate in song.

We invite you to join us and help us show the residents of Greenwood House many of whom are still members of ou; congregation, that we have not forgotten them. We know you will be enriched by the experience.

RABBI'S BOOK REVIEW DEBORAH, GOLDA & ME: Being Female and Jewish

in America Come join Rabbi Straus at Greenwood

House on Tuesday, April 7th for his review of Letty Cottin Pogregin's new book DEBORAH, GOLDA, & ME: Being Female and Jewish in America. Letty Cottin ogregin is a founding editor of "MS" MagaZine, and author of five previous books. Filled with passion, drama, profound insights, humor and knowledge, DEBORAH is about Letty's journey; it's about her alienation from Judaism, her subsequent embrace of feminism, and her struggle to reconcile these two identities.

"Wait a minute, I'm confused. You keep saying we this and we that and I never know if you mean your family, women or the Jews! There's my problem in a nutshell. I have a wandering we. First comes my family, but often after that I seem to be caught in a tug of war between woman and Jews." (from the introduction, pxiii).

In the process of telling this deeply personal story, Pogregin touches on many of the issues that affect Jewish women in today's world.

We hope you will be able to join the rabbi for his review of this important book and a discussion of the many issues it raises.

Following January's book review, those who attended decided to form a book group that will meet every other month. We plan to alternate between contemporary literary works of fiction and non-fiction on topics of Jewish interest or by Jewish authors. We will meet alternately during the day time or evening. If you would like to join our book group, please call the Temple office.

HAMANTASCHEN TOO!!

WHAT IS PURIM? Purim, one of our most joyous holidays, commemorates the deliverance of the Jews of

Persia from the destruction planned against them by Haman, vizier of King Ahasuerus. The deliverance was accomplished by that monarch's Jewish wife, Esther, and her cousin, Mordecai. These events are related in the Biblical Book of Esther, which is read in the synagogue on Purim.

IS THE STORY OF PURIM TRUE? The Book of Esther Is a work of fiction rather than a factual historical record. Scholars

hold to the hypothesis that Purim was imposed on an older pagan festival which the Jewish people adapted to meet their own needs. Looking beyond the legendary nature of Purim, the holiday speaks to the historic experiences of antisemitism and persecution. The themes of deliverance from one's enemies and exoneration from the falsehoods which were used to justify their destruction finds a responsive chord. It gives expression to the deep yearning that the age old experience of hatred and prejudice will come to an end.

WHAT IS A MEGILLAH? It is the Hebrew word for scroll. Megillah Esther Is the Scroll of Esther which contains

the story of Purim, read on Purim in the synagogue.

WHAT IS THE SPIRIT OF PURIM? There is no merrier occasion in the Jewish year than Purim. Tradition has it that we

should be so intoxicated with merriment at this season that we fail to distinguish between the cursing of Haman and the blessing of Mordecai. The Hebrew expression for "fail to distinguish is 'ad 10 yada'." ·Shalach Manot," the sending ot gifts to friends and to the poor, is obligatory upon all Jews as a token of deliverance and to add to the joy of everyone at this festive season.

JEWISH COMMUNITY MARKS SOOth ANNIVERSARY OF THE

INQUISITION WITH "SEPHARD '92" The year 1992 marks the SOOth or

Quincentennial Anniversary of the expUlsion of the Jews from Spain by the Inquisition. These Spanish exiles, the Sephardim, dispersed throughout the Mediterranean basin and elsewhere, and developed a special culture of their own. The legacy of the Sephardic Jews is rich and diverse, and colorful cultural influences can be felt in the history and customs, seen in the folk art, and heard in the traditional music.

Representatives from area synagogues met recently at the Jewish Community Center to begin preparations for "Sephard '92," a year of commemoration that will run from March, 1992 through March, 1993. Plans include a musical event, a film and discussion series, guest speakers, a trip to the Sephardic community in Brooklyn, a special Sephardic Sabbath to be observed simultaneously at congregations throughout the Delaware Valley.

The committee will be preparing a brochure with the details of these forthcoming events as well as programs taking place at the individual synagogues.

ISRAEL BONDS Israel bonds are one of the most popular

investments in the country today, according to a recent CNN news broadcast. The program discussed the State of Israel VRI (Variable Rate Issue) Bond, which is currently paying an annual interest rate of 7.50%, and should be of great interest to our congregation.

The VRI will, in fact, never pay less than 7.50% a year. During times of a higher prevailing rate, the interest paid equals this minimum of 7'12% a year, plus half the excess of the average prime rate over 7%% calculated on June 1 and December 1 . Interest is paid semi-annually on these dates. If purchased from employee benefit plans, including Keoghs and IRAs, or union funds, the VRI is redeemable after three years on 120 days notice, and is redeemable after five years on 120 days notice by all others. A $25,000 minimum investment, the VRI matures on September 30, 2003.

As a result of the current investment appeal of the VRI and other securities offered by State of Israel Bonds, more State of Israel Bonds have been sold in 1991 than ever before. For more information, call State of Israel Bonds headquarters at 201-828-0200 or 800-752-5652.

The Story of Purim •..

... is so full of human interest, of excitement and hair-breadth escapes that we have never grown weary of telling it. However, the way we tell it may sometimes vary. Whether or not the story is told in prose, rhyme, or performed from door to door it's always a "big shpiel.· With some contemporary phrasing, in a rap format, here's yet another way to tell the Purim tale:

Here's the story I gotta tell, About a fine young maiden you know so well.

Her name is Queen Esther, and she was so brave. Her people, the Jews, she did save!

The story's villain is a man named Haman, Who lied about the Jews whom he was blamin'.

And, Mordechai, the Jew, now he wouldn't bow, and Haman, the Agagite, raise such a row.

He thought he would eliminate our race, But Mordechai, our main man, put him in his place.

Stop!! Now look and listen, There's more to this Purim edition.

The King, whose name is Ahasuerus, Gave Haman the power to scare us.

But when Esther spoke to the King, He wouldn't hear of such a thing.

And because she was a courageous Esther, We retained the freedom to be Jews together.

And every year on the 14th of Adar, (March 18th is the Purim date)

We go to Temple and celebrate. We have a carnival and a masquerade

Listen to the Megillah and enjoy the costume parade.

So come on all you Jews, Get on the move ...

Grab a gragger, and get into the groove.

YOU ARE INVITED TO A TORATHON On March 29, at 9:00-12:15, Har Sinai will host a community wide Torathon. Area

religious school students with their families and teachers will join together in our Temple for this special learning event which is sponsored and organized by the Bureau of Jewish Education and Dr. Saundra Epstein. The morning will be filled with educational programs and workshops for children of all ages, teens and adults. All participants will have an opportunity to choose from a number of different activities and learn about Jewish issues and concerns, enjoy m usic, art, stories, and workshops on Family life, Jewish History and Literature, Bible Study, Tzedakah, and more. To conclude the program we will have a special presentation by Creative Theater. Please plan to attend; it will be a very enlightening and entertaining experience.

AFTER FIVE HUNDRED YEARS •••

When we think of 1492, it reminds us of Columbus' voyage and discovery of America in the name of the King and Queen of Spain. Although this may have been a glorious year in the history of Spain, it was an infamous time for the Jews. On March 31, 1492, the Spanish monarchs ordered the Jews to be expelled from their country. The Sephardim, expelled from Spain, boarded ships with destinations like Portugal, Turkey, Italy, and the New World. The decree was never officially repealed. King Juan Carlos has promised to annul it on March 31, 1992, five hundred years later, in conjunction with the Quincentenary celebration of Columbus' discovery of the New World. Although this will not eliminate the tragedy of the Inquisition, it is encouraging that the Spanish government is renouncing this evil act and is acknowledging the contributions of the Sephardic Jews with special exhibits and events.

Social Action News ----

Ariel Pereimuter, Chairperson The Social Action Committee met to

discuss our Spring Agenda and took the following action:

ONE CONGREGATIONI ONE FAMILY

The Exchange Club has created this program which asks religious congregations to "adopt- a homeless family and provide necessary supports to get them back on their feet. The Committee voted to become one of the participating congregations and hopes that the Har Sinai community will help to furnish the necessary supplies and services. The family has not been chosen as of yet, and the Social Action Committee will have input into the selection process. We will certainly keep the congregation informed as to the progress of this project.

STREET NUMBERS FOR THE BELLEVUE AVENUE AREA

We had been asked by the Bellevue Avenue Residents Group, an organization put together by Mercer Medical Center, to provide street numbers which will be hung by members of the community on homes in the neighborhood who do not have these numbers. The local police have asked that this be done to assist them in responding to calls in the area. The Social Action Fund provided the necessary funding and Millner Lumber Company was generous in providing us with the numbers at cost.

SOCIAL ACTION SHABBAT The Social Action Committee in con

junction with Har Sinai Temple Youth (HSTY) is planning the fourth annual Social Action Shabbat on April 24th. A creative service will be prepared by our Social Action Committee and by HSTY's Social Action Committee and Mayor Doug Palmer will be our speaker.

FUND ALLOCATION The committee also voted to allocate

small grants from the Social Action Fund to local organizations which are working in the areas which we have targeted as our priorities. In keeping with the guidelines established for the administration of this fund, the Temple Board of Trustees must now approve the committee's recommendations. We look forward to giving a full account in the next month's Bulletin.
