RABBINIC REFLECTIONS The following letter has been printed in many other sy nagogue bulletins; I
thought it timely to share with y ou.
AN UNMAILED LETI'ER To THE DIRECTOR OF INTERNAL REVENUE
Dear Sir:
Enclosed is my income tax return, which I am sure is in proper order insofar as
the law is concerned. But I confess to a feeling of fraud because of some of the
deductions.
You will note an attached sheet listing contributions. There is a sizable list of
donations to Ahavath Achim. Yes I can prove them: dues, building fund, Hebrew
School, prayer books, etc. Yet, I feel a pang of deceit.
As I memorialize or honor a dear one, am I being charitable? As I add a library
book, or prayer book. .. a book that I can enjoy together with others ... am I aiding edu
cation? As I help to enable our children to receive a modern Jewish education, am
I making a contribution?
Mr. Director, I admit I am ,entitled to deductions to some causes so that others
may walk, see, hear and live with a measure of phy sical comfort and freedom from
want or pain. But, my giving to Ahavath Achim is not to others! I give to my self: a
house of worship, study and fellowship; a well-rounded program of education to my
children, that they may walk with respect and dignity among their fellows; a home •
in which I am comfortable and happy, a home where I pray, study and socialize with
people near and dear to me.
Mr. Director, I appreciate the deduction. But in all honesty, my income is far
greater than the figures show. How do I estimate the dignity, the self-respect and
warmth which Ahavath Achim has given me? How do I estimate the satisfaction
that is mine in the knowledge that my children are comfortable in their Judaism;
and the meaningfulness I have found as an American Jew living in a confused age?
You tell me, Mr. Director .. .!'ll be happy to pay what lowe.
Shalom,
Rabbi Lynn Koshner

LOOKING B ACK ON THE SUPER BOWL PARTY FOR THE HOMELESS
Our Super Bowl Party for the Homeless was successful beyond our wildest dreams. Approximately 160 Har Sinai-ites were joined by volunteers from Imani Church and Community Center and the Jewish War Veterans on Sunday, January 31st as we welcomed about 400 homeless guests including about 50 homeless children. Clash of the Trenton Titans made an appearance and our guests had their Polaroid photos taken with him as a reminder of the day. One couple remarked that in their 21 years together, this was their first family photo. We served about 1200 individual meal servings plus snacks. Our guests also took home a variety of personal hygiene items, children's apparel and sports memorabilia. We were covered by four television stations, four local newspapers and the Associated Press. Hats off to our chairperson, Angie Haftel, all of our committee coordinators, and all of you for volunteering. The day is best summed up by one of our guests who told Angie, "It's people like you who make my life worth living."

BABYSITTING BLUES
Har Sinai Temple has been providing babysitting, gratis, during Shabbat evening services throughout this year. It has been extremely well received by our members as it offers our young families the opportunity to attend services regularly. Because this is an extra budgetary expense, we invite you to help us to continue this important service to our community by making a donation of "Chai" (Life), $18.00; to help our young families enrich their Jewish lives by participating in our Congregational life.
Remember SCRIP at Passover 1ime. To purchase, call the Temple office.

SISTERHOOD NEWS and VIEWS by Nancy Levine
The winter has been good to Sisterhood thus far. There was a very successful "Girls Nite Out" for dessert and a movie in Janurary. We saw "Shakespeare in Love" and we all agreed that it definitely has a good shot for an Oscar. Due to the positive response, we are planning another movie and dessert night sometime this Spring. Look for upcoming information regarding this event.
Sisterhood's major spring fundraising event is Bingo and Desserts scheduled for March 17 at the synagogue from 7:30 to 9:30. The cost is $5.00 per person. For further information, please call Edye Discount at the synagogue. We look foward to seeing everyone attend.
Our Book Club will be starting in the near future. Please keep an eye out for flyers regarding the first meeting.
Sisterhood will be closing out the year in May with a special dinner at a local resturaunt. Information regarding this will follow shortly.
Please remember to send in your dues if you have not already done so. The dues is an essential part of Sisterhood fundraising and benefits the entire synagogue. We have over 300 paid members thus far and are hoping to increase our menbership each year. Sisterhood welcomes Har Sinai members as well as non-members to join our organization and to participate in all our activities. It's a great way to meet people, especially if you are new to the synagogue or if you are "synagogue shoppng". Please invite your friends - we'd love to have them .B'shalom .

SEDER, You WITH THE STARS IN YOUR EYES by Arthur Finkle
Excuse the play on words of an old song stand-bye. But it does point to something you can do this Passover - - innovate family Passover tradition. The creation of new traditions begins with you. The following ideas may help your Seder more child-centered this year.
• While preparing Matzah balls, insert a raisin inside 3 of them. During the Seder meal, whoever finds one in his bowl when served must sing a song or tell a story.
• Prior to Passover, have your younger children draw and color a "Seder plate" on a paper plate to use at the Seder. Most Haggadot have a picture of the items which go on the Seder plate. Each time a new item is introduced in the Seder, have the children find it on their own plates.
• Tell the story of Passover with errors for the children to correct.
• Make a map tracing the journeys of the Children of Israel from Egypt through the wilderness to Israel. Make place mats, which can be colored by the children, and either use them during the meal or hang them on the wall. A pull-out map can be inserted in the Haggadah.
• Have each participant prepare a "backpack" of Israeli products to use at the Seder (be sure nothing is hametz). At the end of the Seder, pool the items and have a grab-bag.
• Challenge the children (after all, it is their night) to pick out every reference to Israel as you go through the Haggadah.
• Give a book on Israel as a prize for the afikomen. • Make up Four Questions centering on Israel, e.g., Why is this land different from all other lands?
• Reenacting Our Past: An Exercise (To be used prior to the paragraph beginning: "In every generation ... ")

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE ------
Beth Brobst and Mary Kirsch, Chairpeople
May 2, 1999 CROP WALK FOR THE HUNGRY 1:30 pm Again this year, we will be participating in the Annual Trenton CROP Walk, an ecumenical, interfaith celebration of help and hope. This national event raises funds to help end hunger worldwide by providing improvements in food availability and production. The 10K walk (6.2 miles) will definitely be a rewarding personal and family event and, it also promises to be a lot of fun. Get out your walking shoes, start limbering up, and plan on supporting your congregation in this important mitzvah.
lIAR SINAI CAREGIVERS: We have initiated a "Har Sinai Caregivers Program" to help those in our own congregation who may need some temporary or long term extra care. We have started this group with the help of the Interfaith Caregivers of Greater Trenton. This group provides training for anyone who wants to participate. We a.re planning a training session in late Spring. If you are interested in joining us, please call the Temple office.
ROUTE ONE MEALs: Hot meal preparation and delivery for families housed in the motels on the Route One corridor on the first Thursday of each month continues. The assistance of all congregation members who have so faithfully volunteered to cook, pack, and deliver meals is truly appreciated. But, new volunteers are always welcome. Please call Randi Lawrie (215-493-9181) or the Temple office if you can volunteer to help out with this long-term Har Sinai project.
MERCER COUNTY INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK: A Community Response to Homelessness: Har Sinai Temple has become the partner congregation with Trinity Cathedral (West State Street) in a program to help the homeless in the community. For one week on a rotating basis (every 12 weeks), Trinity Cathedral will serve as host for 14 adults and children, housing and feeding these families for the seven days. During the day, the children go to school or daycare and the adults work with their social worker for job training and schooling. This family has been very successful in moving families into
homes and jobs of their own in less than six months. As a helping congregation, we provide one evening meal for the families during the week they are at Trinity. This involves preparing, delivering, and serving. The families will also be our guests at the Purim Carnival on February 28th. Our first meal was delivered on February 11th.
Sunday, April 25th - Tuesday, April 27th
RELIGIOUS ACTION CENTER'S CONSULTATION ON CONSCIENCE. Every two years, the Religious Action Center and the Commission on Social Action, located in Washington D.C., host two and one-half days of intensive high-level briefings on current issues and critical legislation. The Consultation on Conscience is truly one of the outstanding and most exciting meetings sponsored by our movement. This year the Consultation will deal with the issues of our day for these are the issues which will define our age: Religious Liberty, the Peace Process, Reproductive Freedom, Gun Control, Economic Justice, Health Care Reform, Environmental Protection, Religious Pluralism, Civil Liberties, Civil Rights, Gay and Lesbian Rights, and Separation of Church and State.
Conducted by key senators, representatives, administration officials, and national policy experts. Reform Jews, rabbis, social action chairs and committee members and all those concerned with pursuing justice and our reform prophetic ideals gather at this largest national Jewish conference devoted to Social Justice. This year, Vice President Al Gore, Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Secretary of Education Richard Riley, Senators Robert Torricelli, Barbara Boxer, Joseph Lieberman, and Ron Wyden, along with Representatives John Porter and Joseph Kennedy II, and many others, are expected to participate. The consultation has had an extraordinary impact on participants, allowing them to learn from and work with the very people defining new approaches to the key issues facing the Jewish community, the United States and the world.
We strongly encourage any Har Sinai member interested in attending the Conference to call the Temple office or the Rabbi for more information, or to register.
HSTY by Jamie Miller, President
Those who missed our HSTY midnight bowling event missed out on a great time. Lindsay Dorland won $1.00 because she bowled a strike when a colored pin was the head of our lane. It was definitely a lucky night for HSTY because members Mark Treilman, Nikki Miller, Lindsay Dorland, Lauren Blumberg, Keri Marder, and Monica Mintz's names were all picked at the raffle for the $50 jackpot bowling prize. I, Jamie Miller, eventually won that contest with a thru-the-Iegs shot.
HSTY's own Friday night service will be happening on February 26th and part assignments will come out soon. Also, students are urged to send in their checks for a day in New York City, where we will be seeing RAGTIME, to advisor Tara Tengood as soon as possible.
Congratulations to Nikki Miller, the new Vice President of Social Action.

LONG RANGE ADVISORY COMMITTEE by Jeff Fine
Let me begin this column by reproducing here the Mission Statement ofHar Sinai Temple which was developed several years ago by this Committee and approved by the Board.
LoNG-RANGE PLANNING COMMITrEE MISSION STATEMENT
Har Sinai Hebrew Congregation, founded in 1857 in Trenton, New Jersey is a Reform Jewish Congregation, affiliated with the UAllC, serving the greater Delaware Valley.
We are an inclusive congregation welcoming all who wish to learn about Judaism, teach it to their children, and live a Jewish life.
We are dedicated to fulfilling the historic covenant between God and the Jewish People. We seek to infuse the timeless teachings of Torah into our daily lives. Ours is an open, moving and evolving concept of living Judaism. We seek to provide a sense of community (hevruta) among our members, to enhance Jewish family life and culture, and to promote the practice of Jewish values and mitzvot, social action and social justice in our daily lives, at home, at work and in our community.
We take pride in our congregational history and longevity which reflects the Congregation's ability to respond to a changing world in creative and constructive ways.
We support the traditional functions of our Synagogue as a House of Assembly, Study and Worship.
We recognize Israel as a center for Jewish spiritual and cultural life and affirm our link to the land of Israel and its people.
As members of World Jewry (K lal ¥israel), we are dedicated to the well being of Jews everywhere.
The Long Range Advisory Committee's mission is to assess and address our congregation's long range needs and we are in the early stages of that process. This is a very exciting time in the life of our synagogue and congregation as we are at the threshold of a changing world to which we hope to respond, as our mission statement says, in creative and constructive ways.
I would like to advise the congregation of the steps that we together can take to create our vision and make it become a reality. The next important step in this process will take place on Sunday, April 11, 1999. At that time, a professional facilitator through the auspices of U AllC, will conduct a day-long workshop for the Long Range Advisory Committee and the Board of Trustees in order to help us in developing our vision for the future. In addition to helping the Board and the Committee develop a collective vision, we will also be developing a process for inviting the participation and consensus building from the congregation at large.
In the interim, the Committee continues to do homework in assessing current building status and future needs, reviewing demographic information and trends as well as experiences with other local synagogues.
The visioning process is an open one and invites the participation of all congregants interested in Har Sinai's future. Our Committee remains open to volunteers and I personally remain open to any and all input, questions and concerns that you may wish to convey to the committee. The Committee's next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, February 25,1999, 7 :00 p.m. at the synagogue.
