SPECIAL FEBRUARY SHABBAT SERVICES

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 6TH , AT 8:00 PM ADULT B'NAI MITZVAH SHABBAT SERVICE For the last 18 months, a small class of 8 men and women have been meeting weekly with our rabbi. Thgether, they have learned how to read Hebrew, studied Jewish history and literature, and engaged in discussions that have encompassed an enormous array of issues and topics. Mostly, they have learned a tremendous amount about the traditions and values of our people, and have formed a community of adults committed to ongoing Jewish learning.

Five members of the class want to commemorate, celebrate and ritualize their studies. Laurie Kruger- Azer, Harold Davis, Sandy Itkowitz, Jim Marrow and Emily Rose will celebrate their becoming Adult B'nai Mitzvah. They will lead us in worship, read from the Torah and Haftorah scrolls, and share with us in a D'var Torah some of what they have learned with the rabbi during their months of studies.

We are very proud of the commitment • these members of our congregation have

made, and invite you to join with us as we celebrate with them their B'nai Mitzvah

• Service.

The fee for the dinner is set at $11 per adult and $8 per child (children two and younger are free). Following dinner, we will remain in the social hall for some more Shabbat Zmirot (singing), story-telling, and fun. Make your plans for dinner now as the reservation deadline is February 17th. BARBARA KAVADIAS Executive Director NJ Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice "Holy Work: Preserving the Right to Choose" We are delighted to welcome to our community Barbara Kavadias, Executive Director of the New Jersey Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. On this 25 anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the historic Supreme Court ruling which preserved a woman's right to choose, Barbara will speak on Holy Work: Preserving the Right to Choose.

Barbara Kavadias has been active in women's issues and preserving the right to choose for much of her life. She was a founder in 1976 of L.A.T.E.R. She was later appointed by Wisconsin's governor to the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention and Services Board. She currently services on the National board of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice.

Ms. Kavadias is also active in Jewish life. She just finished her term as President of the National Council of Jewish WomenWest Morris Section, and is immediate past chair of the Steering Committee for Connections, a project of the Jewish Education Association of the MetroWest Federation.

ADULT LEARNING FOR JEWISH LIVING

TExT STUDY IN HEBREW Several members of our congregation have indicated an interest in doing some study of texts with the rabbi in Hebrew. If you are interested in joining our group, please call the rabbi. While fluency in Hebrew, or a yeshiva background, is not a prerequisite, an ability to read Hebrew is necessary. Together, we'll decide an area of interest.

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL REPORT BY RABBI LIZ ROLLE

The December break was welcomed by all, not least of whom were our students who merrily collected their Chanukah gelt in various forms! It is good to take a break, get a little breath of fresh air and a fresh perspective to launch the second half of the Religious School year. We are well underway again with much yet to learn and look forward to.

Before we look ahead, though, just a glance back. Thanks to our Kindergarten and Second Grade students for the lovely addition of their singing to our Family Service for Chanukah. And, of course, to Mrs. Sacks, Ms. Levy, Mrs. Neuman, Mrs. Saul and Mrs. Orland for making sure everyone knew just what to do.

On January lOth, our Sixth Graders held their annual Shul-In. Fun and learning combined as students made their own tallitot, had ice cream sundaes and spent an hour at the JCC gym. Some even got some sleep! Thanks to Mrs. Maldonato for putting it together and to Mike for staying the night, making breakfast, and helping it all happen just as it was planned.

On January 11th, students in Grades 7- 10 were treated to an amazing performance. Sponsored by Living Voices, we watched a one-man show, "The Right To Dream" about a young black man in the South during the Civil Rights struggle of the sixties. Parents were invited to join students and many were seen weeping at the intensity of the story as it unfolded. Students were similarly impressed as they sat in rapt silence during the presentation.

Now-on to the future! Our Third through Seventh Graders have prepared to sing with Cantor Jeff Klepper at our Friday evening service on January 23rd. Singers should arrive at 6:00 for pizza and rehearsal. During the service, our Third Graders will be presented with their very own copies of our prayerbook, Gates of Prayer. Third Graders who are not singing with Cantor Klepper must arrive by 7:00 for our 7:30 service.

On Sunday morning, January 25th, the Third Grade comes together again for our PACT 3 program, "What Size Shoe Does God Wear?", with guest educator Irene Bolton.

On February 8th, our Second Graders will have their PACT program. As Tu BiShevat approaches, we will be considering our connections with nature, here and in Israel.

Fourth Grade will soon be receiving invitations to an Old-Fashioned Shabbat Dinner for their Shabbat evening on February 20th. The entire Congregation is invited to join with the Fourth Grade as they lead us in welcoming Shabbat with song and foo

On February 21st, our Kindergarten will participate in a very special PACT Havdalah Pajama Party! Wow!

The Confirmation program is entering a very exciting period. On January 30th- February 1st, our Ninth and Tenth Graders

are going to Washington, D.C. with students from Beth Chaim in Princeton Junction. On February 1st, the Eighth Grade will be taking a field trip. On February 8th, Ninth and Tenth Graders will have a guest presentation by Leslie Kallus, M.S.W. of the Anti- Defamation League. Parents are also welcome. On March 1st, a Tenth Grade Confirmation Parents Meeting will be held at 8:30 AM prior to the 9:00 presentation by Rabbi Mark Powers from Jews For Judaism. Parents are again invited to remain for the program.

For our littlest students, the Torah 'n' Tots Club meets on January 31st to look forward to Tu BiShevat and on February 28th to seriously consider Purim! Join us for a short service, singing, crafts, and a story.

A happy, healthy, and Jewishly educational 1998 to all.

Blessed Sacrament, down the street on Bellevue Avenue, and

follows a route to State Street, to the Old Barracks and back,

and the funds are distributed among national and local groups.

It is our understanding that we can select which groups will

receive our pledges. More details will follow.

JUDAICA SHOP For the past twelve years, the Sisterhood of Har Sinai

Temple has been most fortunate in having its lovely and very necessary Judaica Shop firmly in the capable hands of Chair people Thelma Feldman, Daisy Garfunkel and Ann Grossman. Over the past six months, Daisy has retired, Thelma (and Larry) moved to Indianapolis, and Ann, having carried on alone through a hectic Chanukah season, is now resigning her position as sole proprietor of our Shop. We are greatly indebted to all three dedicated women for their service to Har Sinai through their devotion to our store.

N ow, the question must be raised: "Will Har Sinai Continue To Have A Judaica Shop?" One person has indicated a willingness to co-chair in this position; however, we really need two or three seriously committed people to share the job which requires time for buying, displaying, pricing and tagging, inventory, record-keeping, and open store hours. We are looking for volunteers interested in keeping our Judaica Shop exciting, interesting, and available.

If you are interested in finding out more about what is involved in taking on this rewarding responsibility, please call Ann Grossman at 215-493-3450.
