RABBINIC REFLECTIONS Is your child the "The smartest kid in America? This question was posed

on the Fox network last month when the so-called smartest kids in America competed for prizes on television. With a proliferation of game shows it was evitable that something of this nature would rear its head on television. We are told that the television shows with either the word "millionaire" or "greed" in the title bring untold wealth to the networks that air them. In recent memory the show "Do you want to Marry a Millionaire" seemed like a great idea until the show turned out to be a cruel hoax rather than the panacea for unrequited well-heeled love.

Superficially, "The smartest kid in America" program would seem to be another good idea. After all, in our society we truly do not place enough emphasis on intelligence. We applaud the triumphs of young athletes, child actors and rock musicians but rarely do we recognize the prodigy. In fact we often denigrate the prodigy by labeling him or her a geek or nerd. So one would think that a game show that celebrates child geniuses would be a plus. Unfortunately it wasn't. What we observed on this program was more a group of very high I.Qed 12 year olds regurgitating unrelated esoterica than a good sampling or definition of a "smart kid." ethical or moral is not considered to have achieved anything worthy of note. The total person was important to the rabbis of antiquity and not just one· facet of one's character. Therefore the basic tenets of Judaism are in sync with contemporary philosophies of education that believe in "multiple intelligences" or judging people's "smartness" on many different scales. Therefore according to Judaism we should also have a game show entitled "Who is the most charitable kid in America" or "Who is the most honest kid in America." To recognize only intellect, or further, to characterize intellect as the amassing of facts and statistics, narrowly

defines any evolving pre-teen. The game show "Who is the smartest kid in America" demonstrates more the greed of network television than a representation of preteen mental power in America.

Our sacred tradition saw the individual as a composite of many good and worthy qualities rather than just one. Having intellect without perspective is worthless. As the Talmud queried: Who is wise? The answer: He who learns from everyone. The ability to open oneself to the infinite possibilities that life presents is the hallmark of intellect in the Jewish tradition.

PRESIDENTS REPORT -------by Steve Cickay

I would like to invite all of you to attend our Annual Congregational Meeting that will be held at Har Sinai at 7:30 Monday evening, June 19, 2000. Traditionally, attendance at this meeting has been underwhelming to say the least. This year I am encouraging a revolutionary break with tradition and therefore hope to see many of you there that night as we celebrate our many accomplishments of this last year and look forward to what we hope to do in the next.

At the Annual Meeting, you have an opportunity to MIleet the new members of the Executive Board and of

the Har Sinai Board of Trustees. This is a good chance to ommunicate with these dedicated leaders of our ongregation to inform them of the direction that you wish them to take our congregation next year. You will also have a chance to examine our financial situation as

documented in our annual printed end-of-year report. You will also have an opportunity to hear the many dedicated Committee Chair people comment on the successes they have had this year and what they plan to do for us next year. These Har Sinai Board Members and Committee Chairs deserve recognition for al the hard work they have done this year. Please come that night and show them you care for what they have done for your temple.

You will also be able to see that night how a Har Sinai Board of Trustees meeting is run. This may even encourage you to, one day, join our ranks so that you too can have the honor of influencing and guiding our congregation into the future.

I am looking forward to seeing many of you on that special night.

----- SISTERHOOD NEWS AND VIEWS -----by Hope Kadesh

I would like to thank the 1998-2000 Sisterhood Board for helping me make the Har Sinai Sisterhood a vibrant, thriving organization within Har Sinai. It was quite a challenge when I started back in July 1998, but with all the creative and motivating minds, we were able with the help of each other to reach our goals. We have come up with some new ideas as well as keep the old traditions alive. Nancy Levine worked with the membership committee and had the welcome baskets; Maggie Mandell worked with the Bagel & Schmooze reception and the various programs we had. Muriel Rosenfeld restarted the Rabbi's book club. The holiday bazaar was chaired by Edye Discount along with her chairing the Shabbat across America Dinner, BingolDessert night and of course the annual Fashion Show. Randi Flax got digging into the kitchen and ordered new cups and saucers and a new supply of

2

utensils. Ellin Hirschordered us new tablecloths for the Social Hall. For many years, Gail Feinstein has worked with the Oneg Shabbats and Ann Grossman with the Bimah Flowers. Lisa Stinger provided the birthday books at the Family services each month, and Gail Reiss provided the Rt. 1 homeless meals with desserts. Abbie Katz and Sue Wexler provided the Sunday school with snacks, making Mr. Applehead at Rosh Hashanah, Sundaes in the Sukkot, and chairing the wonderful Chanukah dinner. Linda Geyer-Bolder and Ina Katz were busy all year trying new ideas for the profitable Judaica Shop. Thank you to Phyllis Malinger for taking all those notes and Mary Waldman for keeping our finances together. I would also like to personally thank each and everyone of you for supporting me and my board and look forward to continued support for the future Har Sinai Sisterhood.

MEN'S CLUB ---Larry Miller, Chair

The newly resurrected Har Sinai Men's Club held their initial meeting in early April with Herb Greenberg, owner of the Trenton Shooting Stars as their featured speaker. This event was well attended and reinforced that there is a definite need for a Men's Club. A special thanks to Brian Shaffer for bringing Herb to speak to Har Sinai.

Har Sinai Men's Club held their meeting in May to elect interim officers. Those elected to interim office are: Larry Miller - President, Michael Simon - Vice president, Steve Gubernick - Secretary, and Harvey Silk - Treasurer. Committees were formed for programming and activities with chairs: Cliff Bolder, Andy Reiss, Brian Shaffer, Art Nahan, Bernie Silverstein and Harvey Silk. Upcoming planned events were discussed: Har Sinai Family Nite at the Trenton Thunder game for mid-June and tubing on the Delaware River for the end of August. Men's Club is also planning a membership meeting for end of September with a noted speaker in attendance.

For additional information on Har Sinai Men's Club, please contact our Membership Committee: Brian Shaffer, 609-896-1453, or Rob Seidman, 215-369-4486 .

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL REPORTS ------by Susan Dorfman, Education Director

As all of us breathe a collective sigh of relief and look forward to a relaxing summer, it is time for us to savor the many successes of the school year that just passed. I must take a moment to thank all the parents and teachers for giving so much of your time throughout the school year. A special thank you goes to Nancy Levine and the Religious Education Committee for their dedication and commitment to improving our school. Your help, advice and support are greatly appreciated. Also, I want to thank PTO co-chairs, Ina Katz, Lorell Levy, and the entire PTO membership for your help throughout the year. The first year for any organization is difficult, and you have done a wonderful job! Thank you for caring so much about our school children! A special thank you goes to the Room Parents for helping out with parties and making those emergency phone calls whenever we asked! I also must mention my gratitude to Rob and Lisa Seidman and Madeline and Steve Gubernick for your tireless dedication to our very successful Purim Carnival! Thanks also to Sue Wexler and Abbie Katz for chairing the Chanukah Dinner and to Joan Kamens and Debbie Mannella for chairing the Fourth Grade Shabbat Dinner! Now everyone put your feet up and enjoy the summer.

HELP OUR SUMMER MEMBERSHIP DRIVE

The summer months are traditionally the busiest months of the year for our membership committee. It is during the summer, especially before the holidays and the beginning of school, that most people join Congregations.

Last year, our Membership Committee did a wonderful job. More than 20 new families, most with young children, joined our Temple family. Each new family adds to our Temple's resources and allows us to expand the programming and services we all want.

Recruiting new members is surprisingly easy. We are very proud of the program, services and school of our Temple. And, we have a unique and truly magnificent building. Our satellite Hebrew programs in Yardley and Lawrenceville provide an additional service to our young families. Whenever we ask people why they haven't joined Har Sinai Temple, it's surprising how often we hear, "We've never been asked!"

The Membership Committee, with your cooperation, would appreciate the opportunity to talk to these people. We want to tell them about our exciting Temple, our programs, our activities, and our services. Cut out the coupon below and send us the needed information at the Temple address.

LIBRARY NEWS by Rita Allen, Librarian

Our Library has recently received a most generous gift - a copy of ''The Holocaust Chronicle" from the publisher, Louis Weber, of Publications International. Mr. Weber, the son of Polish Jews, has described this project as "a personal mission.hopefully the legacy of humankind . .. Let us not forget the darkness of destruction and loss, nor the remarkable resilience of the human spirit. It is with this spirit and these remembrances that we will accomplish peace."

Possibly more books have been written about the Holocaust than any other subject in Judaica - fiction, biographical memoirs, nonfictional accounts. Our library has acquired some of them; they are listed in the Card Catalog under the general subject heading HOLOCAUST and then further subheadings. However, if you then search for these books on the shelves, you may not find them. Too many of our titles have been borrowed, but never returned. So, if your bookcases at home contain books with printed labels on the spines, they may well belong to Har Sinai, or even to another library. Please return them.

Our thanks to Mr. Weber for his generosity. Also to Evelyn Pearl, of New York, who has kindly contributed to our Library Fund in return for several yearbooks that we neither use nor need.

Recently I met a congregant in the library, who asked about a certain book. We didn't have that particular title in our collection, but her interest lay in purchasing it. By then she had spent several months trying to track the book down through the major sales outlets, without success. But - there is another way. There is a web site for locating used books, and in 5 minutes I had found this book, in a California Bookstore, for $12.95. The web site is http://www.addall.com/used. You can log onto this yourself, or if you don't have Internet access, please call me at 215/295-0115, and I'll be glad to track it down for you.

And here's another excellent and interesting web site for you: Terren Ilana Wein and Juna Z. Snow have created ''Virtually Jewish; an Internet tutorial from a Jewish perspective". This is both an introduction to "surfing" on the Internet and a guide to some web sites about Judaism. I tried it myself and found it definitely worth a look, although I'm sorry that the web site is so long. Here it is: http://leep.lis.uiuc.eduiseworkplace/weinitutoriallDefault.htm.
