The Road to Wing Ding 2018...Interesting Facts about Knoxville.

Knoxville being at the epicenter of the Tennessee valley has played an important role in American history. Over the next few months as we are planning our trip to Wing Ding, I will be sharing some interesting facts about Knoxville, TN. Knoxville shares its name with 5 others in the states of Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The city was named after Henry Knox, the first Secretary of the War for the United States Stay tuned for more interesting things about Knoxville. Leah

Chapter Director’s Report Happy New Year Chapter G! Leah and I are very excited to see what 2018 has in store for all of us. We are anxious to see how many of your great ideas will make it on the ride schedule. As I said at the December Gathering, there were many more suggestions and ideas than time available to do them all. Our new ride coordinators are getting a little more than their feet wet with the daunting task of putting together a list of great rides and activities. Speaking of our new ride coordinators now would be a good time to introduce them. We are so pleased to welcome Chuck and Judy Norris to the staff as your new ride coordinators. We look forward to working with them and participating in as many rides and events as we can. We mentioned the Christmas Party in last month’s article, but if you remember, it was written before the party actually happened so we left you hanging on a couple of very prestigious announcements. Please join us in congratulating Steve and Babette Centner, who were recognized as the 2018 Couple of the Year, and Asa Rouse, who was recognized as the 2018 Individual of the Year. Congratulations to the three of you! Leah and I hope that everyone had a great time at the Christmas Party and we have received some fantastic feedback on the location. Of course, we are listening and will do everything we can to secure the same location for next year. Thanks to everyone who attended, and a special thank you to those who helped set up and prepared the centerpieces. A very special heart-felt thank you to everyone who brought toys for our donation to the Steinford Foundation. I should have taken a picture of the representatives faces when I opened the tailgate to my truck and they saw the loot they were about to receive. It was such an overwhelming response and we could not be more proud to be associated with such kind and giving people as our Chapter G family. Leah and I want to thank Ray and Kathy Conrad for all they have done to assist the chapter and us over the past two years as Assistant Directors. We also want to thank Steve and Babette Centner and Bob Thomann, who are stepping down as ride coordinators and technical educator. Your talents and time dedicated to the chapter is greatly appreciated and will be missed. As you have already heard, there are changes happening throughout GWRRA in 2018. The biggest one affecting our chapter is the elimination of the Rider Educator position for which Rick and Kim Artmayer have admirably filled since 2014. This was a demanding position and we cannot thank the Artmayer’s enough for all they did to ensure the Rider Education Program’s success within Chapter G. We are pleased to announce that although their position is going away, we get to keep them on staff as they have accepted the position of technical educator. Leah and I look forward to participating with all of you in as many events as we can during 2018. Come on out and have a good time.

Technical Educator Report

Perhaps you have heard of the Euro 4 regulations. This is a set of laws that govern the design of motor vehicles that are permitted to be sold in Europe. More than just laws regulating exhaust emissions, the Euro 4 laws cover everything from vehicle lighting to engine noise to fuel use to braking systems, among other things. The use of fuel is a big part of the new rules. Tests are done on both burned and unburned fuel emissions. Carburetors are notorious for allowing fuel to evaporate, so now most every motorcycle is fuel injected, as this keeps all the fuel contained until it enters the cylinder for combustion. All noises from the motorcycle, exhaust as well as other engine noises, even license plate and fender vibration noises, are checked. Water cooling does help to quiet the mechanical nature of the engine. And additional body panels help too. Braking systems are another large part of the rules. Any new machine displacing more than 125 cc must have antilock or integrated braking systems.

So why am I reporting on these European rules when we all live and ride in the USA? Because we live in a global market. While it is true that the United States buys nearly twice as many motorcycles as the largest consumer country in Europe, all the European Union countries combined purchased more than twice as many motorcycles as we do. And since all the E.U. countries agree to abide by the same regulations, they are the single largest market for the types of motorcycles we usually buy - the larger, higher powered sport, touring and cruising machines. Due to economy of scale, what is designed and sold in Europe is also coming to the USA. So, these rules affect what we ride.

It is interesting to compare the Euro 4 regulations to the design features of the new Gold Wing. A lighter machine requires less torque to get rolling, and a smaller, more compact motorcycle requires fewer horsepower to move down the road. These changes result in reduced fuel consumption. More valves allow for better breathing, and a higher compression ratio, raising engine efficiency and further reducing fuel consumption while simultaneously increasing usable power. More gear choices in the transmission keep the engine operating at its most efficient RPM, allowing the engineers to tailor the noises the engine makes to please the inspectors and the consumer. Improved braking hardware includes the latest generation of anti-lock features. This allows for faster stops in all weather conditions with any load, while significantly reducing or eliminating front wheel lock.

Pins & Patches It's cold outside! Is your bike warm? I'm hoping you put it up for winter properly (assuming you aren't riding it). StaBil in the tank, fresh oil, Battery Tender hooked up, covered with the wheels up. That's the bike.....what do YOU need? We have all the shirts you might ever need: with or without collars, long or short sleeve, wicking or not. Plus any doodad for your vest.... we can hook you up. Riding season is coming; it'll be here soon enough (well, not soon enough). Enjoy the winter; plan for your riding :) Ride safe-

Ride Coordinator Report

Hard to believe it is already a new year! Looking forward to a great riding season for 2018. It was such a pleasure being your ride coordinators for the past 2 years. We appreciate your support and ideas along the way. We are now looking forward to being your Chapter Couple of the year. Our December Dinner ride was to the Front Street Cafe in New Richmond, Oh. There were 8 people in attendance and we had a great time and really enjoyed the food. We hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year celebration.

Hysterical Historical Highlights Congratulations to our members who are celebrating their

January Chapter G anniversaries!

Another year has come and gone … but I’ll make one thing perfectly clear,

And that’s the fact that though time is flying … Hallelujah! We’re still here!

We won’t forget joys or lessons previously learned … of that we are totally sure,

But now that 2018 has arrived … we can make new Goldwing memories galore!

In 2018 we look forward to our members … who joined us in years gone by,

Because nicer folks you just couldn’t find … no matter how hard you try!

Like one who joined with the “G” back in ’97 … that’s our very own Ramona Banks,

And for all she’s done for and with Chapter G … we just want to offer our “thanks!”

Then the next January members who joined the “G” … wasn’t until the year ‘03,

When we greeted both Bob and Pam Thomann (they’re such a joy!) … I know you all agree!

Next in 2006 came our friends the Brakes … both Suzanne and Deward, her man,

Now Deward’s love for riding is obvious to all and he’s biked for quite a long span!

For his first ride … a ‘53 Cushman scooter for $50 ... he apparently spared no expense,

And rode home in the rain with no rain suit, helmet, or experience … and obviously no sense!

Soon he moved up to a ’56 Harley Davidson Hummer, but what was he to do,

When he also discovered … girls preferred vehicles … with 4 wheels rather than two!

But in 1990 he met one special girl …, who turned out to be the love of his life,

For she loved both his newly acquired Goldwing and also … the idea of being his wife!

Now Deward has made many good decisions … whether outright buying or as a trade,

But we all agree … choosing Suzanne as his bride … was the best decision he ever made!

Then in 2011 the “G” was joined by Mr. Heiss … who is simply known to us as “Pete”,

And the fact that he’s still active in the “G” … well, we think that’s pretty sweet.

Then in 2015 we met the Stuards … both our Carla and her man Craig,

And we’re delighted they are part of the “G” family too … and of them we freely brag.

It is members like these who make each year special (no wonder the “G” has survived!),

Without any one of them our chapter would truly be lacking and we’d be deeply deprived.

So let’s get busy making more wonderful memories … all of which we will truly hold dear,

As we all support and love each other for we’ve just been blessed …with a brand new year!!!

Editor’s Notes

Passing the Baton… Another year has passed and even though November is typically the month that we give thanks,

the beginning of the year is sometimes known as the changing of the guard and therefore a perfect time to say thanks to those who have given their time and energy to making Chapter “G” the amazingly fun chapter that it is. Renzo and I have had the pleasure of working on the “G” Coordinator staff and know that the hard work and professionalism of this group of people make the workings of this chapter seem effortless. What the “G” masses seldom see is the hours of hard work these volunteers put in behind the scenes to make the gatherings and events so enjoyable.

This year several coordinators have stepped down or have moved into other roles to

serve the Chapter. When you see these folks, please give them a pat on the back, and maybe even a hug to say thanks for everything they have done. Ray and Kathy Conrad have stepped down as Chapter Assistant Directors, a role they have held for the past two years. They continue to serve GWRRA as District Vendor Coordinators. Ray and Kathy have been members of GWRRA since 1990 and have given countless hours of their time to the organization; including their years of service as Chapter Directors of Dry Ridge Chapter N.

Because of recent changes in GWRRA, the position of Chapter Educator has been eliminated.

Chapter “G” has been blessed to have Rick and Kim Artmayer serve in this position since 2014. They joined GWRRA in March of 2009 and jumped right in helping the “G” picking up the torch of Technical Educators in 2010 and 2011, by going above and beyond as Special Events Coordinators 2012 -2015, and were Couple of the Year in 2014. They also joined the District staff for several years, and will now continue on with the “G” staff again as Technical Educators. Thanks for hanging around and helping out!

In May of 1989 Steve and Babette Centner joined GWRRA and they have

been helping out the group ever since. They took on the daunting task of Ride Coordinator from 1990 through 2000 and again took the position from 2016-2017. This year they will serve the “G” as Couple of the Year and are looking forward to having a wonderful time!

Last, but definitely not least are our good friends Bob and Pam Thoman who

joined GWRRA back in 2003. Bob stepped up and volunteered for the Technical Educator position from 2008 to 2010 and again from 2015 to 2017. He also was Individual of the Year in 2017. Pam supports him every step of the way.

When I was in high school, one of my many extra-curriculars was track and field. This time of

year reminds me of passing the baton during a relay race: team-mates run in a single lane one at a time carrying the baton in hand. When they finish their portion of the race they seamlessly pass the baton to their team-mate who continues on with the race. Your Chapter “G” Team works hard for you. Clap for them! Cheer for them! Let them know you’re rooting for the whole team, and when their race is over let them know you appreciated their efforts.

Page 11 January 2018

…And the Second String Another one of my high school endeavors was basketball. I enjoyed the game mainly because it

kept me active between cross-country and track season, and therefore was far from being a superstar. I was what is commonly referred to as the second string. I worked hard at practice and supported the starters with everything I had, but my time in the lime-light was extremely limited. Our Chapter team has a second string too! These are coordinators that we don’t usually hear from in the newsletter.

Our 50/50 Coordinators could not be more critical to the survival / fun of

Chapter “G”. Dean and Kim Hedger do a great job draining your pockets of all that annoying spare change and helping you to support the “G” parties and functions. We should also give a shout out to our members for participating in the “fun”d-raisers.

Dennis and Sue Zimmerman spend many hours perfecting the website as

our Webmasters. Dennis works particularly hard . If you haven’t fully checked out our web page at www.chapterg.org , please take the time to surf the tabs on the homepage. There’s some truly awesome stuff there!

The Motorist Awareness Coordinator, the one and only Charlie Hobbs,

works on the back side of the chapter to not only educate members, but also the general public about motorcycle safety. The average glass box four-wheeled driver doesn’t understand the mechanics of two-wheel riding and the need to use caution

when sharing the road. Charlie helps them to see the light! A few years back we saw the need to have a video coordinator to compile

memories / techniques on video for Chapter events. Deward Brake stepped up to take that spot and has been “on deck” ever since.

I’d like to start the year by thanking everyone who contributes or has contributed to making

Chapter “G” the awesome family that it is. I hope you will join me by letting the folks know you appreciate their efforts! Happy 2018! Let’s make it a good one!
