April 25 - May 3, 2014
Dear Working Wise:I just finished my last university class and I’m eager to get a job. I’ve been looking for the last month, but haven’t had much luck yet. Do you have any tips to help me land my first job? Signed, Eager Graduate
Dear Working Wise:
Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise
Do you have a work-related question?Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected] Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general informa-tion.
Dear Eager:
Congratulations on completing university. The good news is that with the second-lowest unemployment rate in the country, Alberta oers a lot of job opportunities.
The bad news is you likely have less related experience than other job seekers, which means you might have to work a little harder to get that rst job.
Fortunately, there are a number of resources you can tap into for help.
First, put your school’s career services oce to work for you. They can usually help you with your resumé and job search and employers interested in hiring new graduates often post jobs on their job boards. Also try asking your professors for advice.
Get professional help with your resumé. Many job seekers make the costly mistake of assuming that their resumé is great. Use your school’s career services oce or use the free e-Resumé review service that’s available on the Alberta Learning Information Service (ALIS) web site at https://alis.alberta.ca/resume.
Talk to employers face-to-face at job fairs. Job Fairs are a great way to link your face and personality to your resumé and ask employers key questions that can help you stand out from the crowd. There are job fairs happening all year long around the province. To nd out about upcoming job fairs near you, visit http://humanservices.alberta.ca/jobfairs.
Create a Linked In prole so recruiters can nd you, clean up any embarrassing content on your other social media proles, and follow Alberta Works on Facebook http://humanservices.alberta.ca/socialmedia for the latest local job fairs and job news.
Use your network of family, friends, teachers and former employers to help you nd a job. Let them know what kind of job you are looking for along with a quick overview of your education and experience.
Expand your job search beyond your ideal occupation or industry. Take inventory of your transferable skills—like organizational, computer, and time-management skills—and consider opportunities in related occupations and industries. Don’t forget to check out small businesses and non-prot organizations.
Register with recruitment agencies. They will not look for a job for you, but they will call you if you are a good match for a position that they are recruiting for. Registering with recruitment agencies is free, takes very little time, and is another great way to tap into the hidden job market. You can start by checking out http://alis.alberta.ca/js/ws/jp/jobpostings/ea.html.
Visit your nearest Alberta Works Centre http://humanservices.alberta.ca/oces and ask a Career & Employment Consultant for advice on your job search.
You can also check out the more than 100 Alberta Works Week, April 28 – May 2, 2014, career events that are happening at 30 dierent Alberta Works Centres located across the province. A list of events is available at: http://alis.alberta.ca/aww
Finally, click on the Job Seekers tab on the ALIS web site http://alis.alberta.ca for more tips on nding a job.
Good luck!
