November 28 - December 4, 2014

Dear Working Wise:I received a resumé from a woman who wants to be our new reception-ist. She acknowledged in her cover letter that she’s legally blind, but that it wouldn’t be a problem. I want to give her a chance, but I just don’t see how it could work. Signed Conflicted

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Do you have a work-related question?Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected]. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.

Dear Conicted:

I think we can all sympathize with you. You want to do the right thing for the community, but also for your company.

Fortunately, in most cases hiring someone with a disability turns out to be both.

People who live with disabilities have become experts in overcoming the challenges of daily living.

Legally blind doesn’t necessarily mean that she can’t see anything—it could mean that she has a narrow eld of vision or can still see shapes or uses a sensor to alert her to visitors. That means your new receptionist can likely greet your customers and answer the phone exactly the way you want.

She was up front with you about her disability. Why not let her explain how she can do the job during the interview.

You might be worried about asking the wrong questions during the interview, but the fact is that it’s no dierent than interviewing anyone else – just focus on the requirements of the job and her ability to meet them.

She may tell you that she has to perform a task in a dierent way or that she will require some sort of accommodation, e.g., special software, but as long as you stick to the job requirements, you’ll be ne.

If she does need accommodations, it may be cheaper and easier than you think.

A Job Accommodation Network survey of more than 1,000 employers found that 56 per cent of disabled employees required accommodations that cost nothing at all. Employers reported the average cost to accommodate an employ-ee with a disability at $320 and 95 per cent said that it was a one-time cost.

And the Disability Related Employment Supports (DRES) program helps Albertans overcome their barriers to employ-ment by osetting some of the costs of worksite modications or assistive technology.

Spinal Cord Injury Alberta just posted a new video of one of their clients who used the DRES program to retrot his shop so he could return to work after his injury. You can see the video for yourself at: http://bit.ly/1uKaLqW.

For more information on the DRES program, visit http://humanservices.alberta.ca/dres.

Alberta Human Services is developing an Employment First Strategy to get government, employers and communities working closer together to help more people with disabilities nd rewarding careers.

More information on Employment First, including the Top 10 Myths of Hiring People with Disabilities is available at: http://humanservices.alberta.ca/ef.

If you are still nervous, help is available for employers. Human Services funds dozens of agencies around the province, which help employers attract and retain employees with disabilities.

To nd an agency near you, contact your nearest Alberta Works Centre for a referral: http://humanservices.alberta.ca/oces.
