August 15 - 21, 2014

Dear Working Wise:As a manager of an independent hotel, I constantly struggle to find good people. And the new restrictions on the temporary foreign worker program will not make it any easier for me. Is there any help out there for small business owners? Signed Hopeless Hotelier

Dear Working Wise:

Working WiseWorking WiseWorking Wise

Do you have a work-related question?Send your questions to Working Wise, at [email protected]. Charles Strachey is a manager with Alberta Human Services. This column is provided for general information.

Dear Hopeless:

The federal government is tightening the temporary foreign worker program to ensure that it benets all Canadians—employers and employees. You can read more about the changes at: www.esdc.gc.ca/eng/jobs/foreign_workers.

The overhaul of the temporary foreign worker program, combined with Alberta’s low unemployment rate—the second lowest in the country—will make it challenging for some Alberta employers to nd and keep the skilled workers they need.

And the stang challenge is only expected to get tougher as waves of our most experienced workers begin to retire.

Due to our growing economy and aging workforce, Alberta is expected to face a shortage of up to 96,000 skilled workers within the decade.

But don’t lose hope, help is available.

First, check out the sta attraction and retention tips in the Employer Tool Kit http://work.alberta.ca/labour/employer-toolkit.html

Second, connect with your local Alberta Works Centre. There are 53 of these employment centres located across the province. Many centres host free job fairs to help connect employers with local job seekers. They may also oer opportunities to prole your business to job seekers and career counsellors who work in the centre. You can nd your local Alberta Works Centre at: http://humanservices.alberta.ca/oces.

Third, post a free job ad or nd out about upcoming job fairs and sta-recruitment workshops for employers on local Alberta Works social media channels, including:Calgary: http://twitter.com/@CalgaryJobFeedCalgary: www.facebook.com/Calgaryjobsfeed Red Deer: www.facebook.com/CentralAlbertaJobs Fort McMurray: www.facebook.com/Fortmcmurrayjobs Lethbridge: www.facebook.com/Lethbridgejobs Medicine Hat: www.facebook.com/MedicineHatJobs

Fourth, visit the Alberta job fairs web page to discover free and low-cost job fairs happening in your community http://humanservices.alberta.ca/-jobfairs.

Fifth, try posting a free job ad on the Canada-Alberta Job Bank web site at www.jobbank.gc.ca.

Sixth, visit http://albertacanada.com/employers and put the Help For Employers resources to work for you.

Finally, get in touch with an Alberta Government Workforce Consultant. Workforce Consultants specialize in helping employers tackle stang challenges and navigate all of the available employer services.

A Workforce Consultant can you help by:• Providing information on how you can tap into hidden labour pools;• Oering helpful publications full of sta attraction and retention tips;• Informing you of upcoming low-cost sta recruitment best practice workshops;• Guiding you toward useful statistics like wage surveys and labour market forecasts;• Explaining how the Disability Related Employment Supports program helps employers hire and retain employees with disabilities; and• Connecting you with local hiring events and opportunities.

You can get in touch with a Workforce Consultant today by:• Calling the toll-free Employer Hotline at: 1-800-661-3753• Emailing the Employer Hotline at: [email protected]

Good luck!
