This past year the IH Council function was returned to the local section along with the pro-ceeds from the Councils savings account ($4620). The function of the Council continues to be important. The funds transferred to the local section are earmarked for Government activities. Allan Schreiber has been appointed as our new Section Government Affairs liaison. His first task is to offer technical assistance to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regula-tion in their implementation of mold inspector licensing exam. Community outreach has been an area where the Local section has involved in the past but the opportunities have been difficult to find and limited in their impact. Outreach is important to not only provide service to the Community but also to promote the recognition of Industrial Hy-giene as a profession. This year National AIHA supported the Science Olympiad with a contribu-tion of $5000. Local Section members have the opportunity to volunteer in this worthwhile activ-ity (see www.floridascienceolympiad.org). More details about the Science Olympiad appear later in this newsletter. Financially the Local section is doing well. We have built our assets to approximately $15,000. With the new membership cycle, our upcoming Conferences and PDC’s and the Certifi-cation review course in December 2008 our assets should continue to increase. I believe that even though we are a not for profit organization, increasing our account balances are important to insure financial solvency and our ability to provide the best programs and services to our mem-bership. Another area that I believe is important for our local section to participate is a sustained student scholarship program. The local section has contributed to the Foundation in the past but it has been inconsistent. Several Local sections have established a permanent yearly $1,000 scholarship through the Foundation by contributing $25,000 in the name of the Local section. While this may seem unachievable, I believe that if continue to have successful events this sum can be accumulated by the end of this decade. Investing in the future is essential if Industrial Hygiene is to flourish. We can all be proud at what has been accomplished. Moving the section and the In-dustrial Hygiene profession ahead next year should be our goal. With the holiday season quickly approaching we have much to be thankful for. My hope for all of you is to have a safe and healthy season with much joy. May everyone enjoy success in their personal and professional lives and rededi-cate ourselves to our Profession and Community.

FLORIDA SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

In our last newsletter, and at the business meeting at our Fall Conference, AIHA National’s sponsor-ship of the 2008 Science Olympiad was presented. AIHA has made a donation of $5,000 to the Sci-ence Olympiad to show support for the competition’s goal to promote and improve student interest in science and to improve the quality of K-12 science education throughout the nation. As a sponsor, AIHA will be supervising the Chemistry Analysis category that includes the Science Crime Busters event for middle school and Forensics for high school. Currently, there are 5,100 active mem-ber schools in 47 states across the United States. Development of an Industrial Hygiene activity is planned for 2009. I believe that the Florida Section will have a role to play in this future event. AIHA is encouraging all members to become involved with the Science Olympiad within their state dur-ing the 2007-2008 school year. Volunteers are needed as assistant event supervisors, student men-tors, or classroom speakers. As this is an event driven competition, preparation prior to the day’s competition is required. The Florida Science Olympiad website can be found at http://www.floridascienceolympiad.org Within Florida there are two regions; Central and Southeast. The Southeast regional competition will be held on February 2, 2008 at the Florida Atlantic University campus in Boca Raton. The Regional Director and contact is Dr. Ingrid Johanson ([email protected]). The event address is: 777 Glades Road Boca Raton, FL 33431 Regional Director: Dr. Ingrid Johanson The Central Regional competition will be held at Wekiva High School in the Orlando area on January 26, 2008 . The Regional Director and contact is Christine Edwards ([email protected]). The event address is: 2501 N. Hiawassee Road Apopka, FL 32703 The Florida Director of the Science Olympiad is Mike McKee ([email protected]). He can be reached at 407-823-6890.

The Fall 2007 Conference held at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, FL on Sep-tember 27 & 28 was very successful. The hotel and conference Center continues to an excellent venue for our local section meetings. The connference was very well at-tended and well received by attendees. The meeting started on Thursday with two PDCs; the first on Green Building Practices, Healthier Building Materials, and the Industrial Hygienist Role in LEED Certification by Dale Walsh, MS, CIH, CSP. The sec-ond was on Control Strategies to Comply with the Hexavalent Chromium Standard by Leo Hearn, CIH, CSP, CET. Both Speakers did excellent jobs covering their material!

Our Fall AIHA Fl Conference was held on Friday, September 28, 2007 at the beautiful Renaissance World Golf Village Resort in St. Augustine, Florida. Presentations were diverse, interesting and very informative, and are available for members to review on our AIHA Fl website. To start off this conference, Mr. Dale Walsh from Converse Consultants, presented a unique look into the world of IH in Las Vegas titled: “What Happens Here You Will Now Hear: Applying Industrial Hygiene to the Unusual in Las Vegas”. Following Dale was Dr. Billy Bullock from Georgia Pacific, whose talk on “A Strategy for Assessing and Managing Occupa-tional Exposures” was very instructive. Mr. Carter Ficklen, Mainthia Technologies, NASA Langley Research Center presented a humorous and eye opening look into “Student and Early Career Professional Develop-ment”. Mr. Aaron Trippler, Government Affairs continues to support our local section by providing updates as to what’s happening on Capital Hill. Dr. James McClusky, USF, Colleges of Medicine and Public Health, gave a very perceptive talk on “Challenging Expert Medical & Toxicology Testimony: The Role of the Expert”. Ms. Thea Dunmire, ENLAR Compliance Services, provided insight on “Occupational Health and Safety Man-agement System Update”. Mr. Walt Black, AMRC Environmental, gave an enlightening talk on “Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria: Should the Industrial Hygienist be Concerned?” Remember most all presenta-tions can be found on the AIHA FL website. We hope to see you this next spring in Hutchinson Island!

The Fall 2007 AIHA Vendor Night on the eve-ning of September 27, was a big success!

This was the second time we equaled our all time high of 20 vendors at our conference. All vendors who participated in the Vendor night are listed on the following page of the newsletter and a number of them are high-

lighted in the pictures on this page.

The vendor exhibit room was full for over 2+ hours as conference attendees learned about the many products and services provided by the attending vendors. As always fun was

had by all who participated. The food was ex-cellent and the company was likewise as col-

leagues and friends had an opportunity to catch up in a relaxing environment. The prizes the vendors supplied were well re-

ceived as always, gifts ranged from gift cards to Starbucks and Target to a gift card to the World Golf Village Golf Store. Remember,

support our vendors!!

I wanted to copy in its entirety the piece that AIHA National President, Don Hart, authored for the November Synergist magazine. It gives a good perspective on local sections and particularly some initiatives that affect us in Florida AIHA. For example we are moving forward with the use of the MemberClicks service which should greatly help us administer information and streamline processes for local section membership and conference registration. More details about MemberClicks will be forthcoming in the next newsletter.

Connecting Locally AIHA Builds Value for Local Sections By Don Hart I always look forward to AIHA’s national conference, AIHce. To me, it can’t be beat in terms of networking, education and the Expo. Obviously, many of you feel the same way. We counted approximately 7,000 participants at AIHce 2007 in Philadelphia. While that’s impressive, I want to focus on what you do the rest of the year to connect with peers: the local sections. About two-thirds (57.7 percent) of AIHA members also belong to a local section. I still maintain and benefit from membership in the Michigan local sec-tion, even though my duties as AIHA president keep me from being as involved in my section as I would like right now. Superb Across the Board Like many of you, I think my local section is great, but I’m here to tell you that AIHA’s local sections are superb across the board. I have had many opportunities to attend other local section meetings as an AIHA board coordinator. Each board member is assigned a handful of local sections to communicate with and support. Board coordinators try to attend one meeting of each of their local sections each year. Those experiences made me realize that many local sections, not just my group in Michigan, provide great value to their members, as well as to AIHA. No matter how good AIHA’s national conference is, some AIHA members just can’t go. For them, local sections provide a way to net-work locally, conduct job searches and get technical advice from peers. While I would like every member of AIHA to attend AIHce every year, I know it’s not always possible. In those cases, having local sections—somebody nearby to interact with and network with—is really valuable. Local sections also provide an important point of engagement that often leads to involvement in AIHA. For example, local section leaders often go on to serve AIHA at the committee level, and some go on to serve AIHA as board members. Adding Value for Local Sections AIHA, through its Local Section Task Force, is also focused on providing more value—ways to make life easier—for local sections. This year, for example, 18 local sections took AIHA up on its offer to collect local section dues on the AIHA membership re-newal form. With two-thirds of AIHA members also holding membership in a local section, this is an enormous opportunity to reduce the administrative burden on local sections. The offer will be made again to local sections in summer 2008, and I hope even more will accept. Similarly, AIHA now offers an online membership management database (MemberClicks™) to local sections. AIHA covers the cost of setup of this database for each local section, leaving local sections responsible only to pay the monthly subscription fee. Again, this is a wonderful opportunity to reduce the administrative burden on local sections. If your local section is interested in ex-ploring this option and has not yet taken advantage of it, please contact Aimée O’Grady ([email protected]) for more information. We have also established quarterly phone calls for new local section officers. We use those to communicate about AIHA activities, tools and resources for officers, as well as best practices from local section leadership. For example, local section leaders have recently been very interested and enthusiastic to hear about the Value of the Profession Study. AIHA is even creating ways to help local sections increase meeting attendance by offering a 15 percent discount on both the member and nonmember rates for all publications orders placed at local section meetings. Clearly, it’s important for AIHA to be supportive of local sections, to communicate effectively with them and to provide value to them. As a result, my own dance card is filling up fast. By the time you receive this issue of The Synergist, I personally will have visited five local section meetings in the last month. In one case, I will be honored to award scholarships to students. In another, I will participate in a special Q & A session, “Ask the President,” with local section members in attendance. Regardless of my contribution to the meetings, I know what I take away will be even more inspiring. Congratulations to the local section members and leaders who make up this important and valuable grassroots network of peers! Hart, a PhD and CIH, is retired from General Motors Corp. and resides in Lake Orion, Mich. He can be reached at (248) 814-9286 or [email protected].

Fall Conference Overview We had an exciting conference program in St. Augustine and it shows in the good at-tendance that we experienced. I am happy to report that we had 51 attendees to the PDCs and the Conference. We also had the support of 20 vendors who contributed to our overall financial success. We were also very fortunate to have excellent speakers who provided us with their knowledge and experience at minimal cost to the organiza-tion or at a minimal travel expense. Registration Income $15,625.78 Paypal fees $ 58.70 Conference Income $ 15,567.08 Conference Expenses $ 12,713.66 Net Conference Profit $ 2,853.42 Overall Financial Overview At this time we have a balance of $9,925.54 in our checking account and our “11-month risk free CD” has generated an in-terest of $57.05 towards a current balance of $5,057.05. Our Paypal account has a balance of $1,265.43, which I will be transferring into our checking account through monthly trans-fers of $500.00 Our total assets of $16,266.02 puts our organization in a good financial standing to enable us to provide good services to the members. I would also like to thank all of you for a smooth and efficient registration proc-ess. Receiving most of the registration forms and payments on time made my job eas-ier and enabled me to be more organized. In the future we hopefully will be using our memberclicks service to register and pay for conferences to make the process even easier for all of us involved.

Interview with a Member & Vendor Ron Roberson

Q: What is your current job and responsibilities? A: I am the Product Manager for Gilian pumps and Sensidyne detector tubes. Responsibilities include training, sales, new product development and applica-tions assistance . Q: How long have you been involved with the local AIHA Fl Section? A: I have been a member of national AIHA since 1979, and probably 1978 for local section. Sensidyne has exhibited at all the local section meetings since it's in-ception in 1984 . Served 3 years on the Board in the late 80s. Q: How has the local section membership benefited your personally and professionally? A: The local section has always afforded me an opportunity for professional development and networking, espe-cially important when one couldn’t afford to attend AIHCE. The local conferences were the only venue we had to see new products when he was doing field sampling in the 1970s, and I found a job at Bendix while attending a local section. Q: What would you like to see AIHA FL do in the future? A: Promote the profession with younger personnel, need more people involved with the profession, try to fund schol-arships for college students. I want to add that the continuity in vendor relationships over the past few years has been very beneficial for making a good system for vendor to participate in an AIHA FL local section conference. Q: What are some of your hobbies? A: I am a Civil War buff, collects old cars, owns a ‘67 Camaro and 1951 Studebaker pick up truck and published a book on the history of the Pacemakers, a 1950s Hot Rod Club in Middletown, OH. A Practical Guide to Mold and the Indoor Environment in South Florida: The truth, the fairy tales and the rest of the story

Did you know that one of our AIHA FL members has authored a book on Mold in Florida? Walt Black, who spoke at the Fall meeting on Friday is the author. Among other places you can purchase this book on Amazon for $9.95. Great to see a member of AIHA FL write a book which attempts to provide useful insight into a controversial subject. Below is a reader comment on the book taken from the Amazon site.

No Hype Here, January 9, 2007 This is a very useful book that gives you the scoop on mold and building issues. Initially I am al-ways skeptical about "mold" books as most of them on the market seem to want to tell you how scary mold is rather than attempt to give you common sense advice on how to prevent mold or handle mold situations. Since I deal with people's homes this book has been a great resource in a readable succinct package.
