FLORIDA LOCAL SECTION OF AIHA SPRING 2014 NEWSLETTER Greetings fellow Florida Section AIHA members, I am truly looking forward to serving as president of the Florida Section of the AIHA this year. We are all fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of such an active local section. I would like to thank our past president Rob Rolon for his leadership and organizational skills that have not only benefited our organization greatly, but have also helped pave the way for me as incoming president. As past president Rob continues to use his experience to assist the board and me in every way possible. 2014-2015 brings with it a change in ocers. We welcome Mark Mitchell as president -elect and Kari Reno as secretary and we say goodbye to Craig Kimmel (president 2012-2013) and Steve Skipper, secretary. We look forward to having Brooke Martin remain as director of communications, Wendy Benison as treasurer, Luis Pieretti as director of professional development, and Linda Boehmer as director of professional relations. Without the hard work, dedication and tireless eorts these individuals contribute, our section could not begin to operate as smoothly as it does. At the Miami conference last fall we were proud to reach our goal and present a $25,000 check for the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation (AIHF) endowed scholarship. Financially the local section is currently doing very well. We have assets of approximately $50,000 and consistent with a member vote at the spring conference we are planning to set aside another $25,000 for the scholarship in the near future. This will likely occur following a financially successful fall conference. The fall conference is scheduled to be held at the Marriott Orlando Airport Hotel in Orlando, Florida on September 11 and 12, 2014. We have not held a conference in the Orlando area in quite a few years and we are hoping that this central Florida location will bring a large turnout. This could be a great opportunity to bring the family, stay at the hotel and enjoy the many activities Orlando has to oer by staying an additional day or two before or after the conference. The AIHce is also coming up very shortly and I hope to see many of you in San Antonio. I am looking forward to an active year in the Florida section and I encourage all of our members to volunteer and participate in the local section in whatever way fits into your schedule. It is a rewarding experience and also provides a great way to get to know all of our members. See you in Orlando if not sooner in San Antonio. Thoughts from the President-Elect - Mark Mitchell!

Hello FL AIHA Local Section,!

I want to thank you for electing me to this position of President-Elect. I look forward to making a contribution to our professional society on your behalf. This is my first position as an AIHA official, and so, I am here to say that “I reserve the right to be educated”. In the past, I organized major technical tours of railroad facilities for my previous AIHA Sections; making contributions in a support role rather than as an elected official. I am confident that I will be learning the ins and outs of how things work, and will be stepping into the world of industrial hygiene at a level I have never been to before.!

!Moving to Jacksonville, Florida, from Anchorage, Alaska, certainly is a big change. Most people who do that sort of thing are enrolled in a Federal Witness Protection Program. I assure you that is not the case with your newly minted President-Elect. However, my time in Alaska showed me that in a smaller professional community, folks have to pull together to keep things going forward. Our AK AIHA group combined efforts with the local ASSE, and together, they were a dynamic voice for occupational health professionals far removed from the hub of the business world. Our IH’s and safety pro’s represented a wide diversity of work forces spanning from oil workers on the North Slope, to deep sea divers repairing underwater structures in the Gulf of Alaska. Sprinkle in several military bases, employees working “in the bush”, the fishing industry, the Alaska Railroad, retail and tourism and you have the core of what the Alaska IH’s were up against. !

Thoughts from the President-Elect - Mark Mitchell!

!As you have been asked to wear many hats during your careers, I too have been challenged with the “other duties as assigned” syndrome. These are opportunities to grow our value not only as individuals, but also in a way that enriches our Local Section. As the Director of Safety for the AK Railroad, I had to step into the operating world at a very deep level and actually practiced “traditional safety” more so than IH for the last 7 years. That challenge was a good thing for both the organization as well as for me. Small and regional railroads are woefully out of synch with OSHA regulations compared to the large Class 1 railroads and so I was able to make significant contributions in bringing their IH and safety programs closer to the 21st century. On the flip side, being thrown into that role rounded out my skill set in that I carry a lot more credibility with the operation officers rather than being a somewhat abstract thinker in a world foreign to most corporate staff. Collectively, we weave a fabric of expertise and serve as resources to each other when we don’t have the answers in our back pocket.!

So I ask you to think about ways in which we will continue to resource for each other, for our Local Section and for the AIHA organization as a whole. I know that my biggest strength is not what I know, but who I can go to for answers……that being you, my fellow colleagues.!

!Mark Mitchell

Thoughts from the Immediate Past President!Roberto “Rob” Rolon

Hola Fellow Florida Local Section AIHA Members,!

What an exciting time for our local section. Back in September of last year, our local section provided a check in the amount of $25,000 to the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation for an endowed scholarship in the name of the Florida Local Section AIHA. !!Also in the month of September, we teamed with the national AIHA office to host the 2013 AIHA Fall Conference in Miami. Our local section sponsored the Hazard Communication/GHS PDC during the conference, which resulted in revenue of over $9,000 for our local section. !!In December of last year, the local section board nominated to two local section members (Dr. Billy Bullock and Ron Roberson) for the prestigious 2014 AIHA Fellow Award. !!We had our 2014 Spring Conference in Jacksonville Florida. The Crowne Plaza on the Riverfront welcomed us back. !!I encourage our local members to actively pursue leadership positions within our local section. I personally can say it has been a rewarding experience to be part of the Florida Local Section board. It truly is a prestigious honor to serve as President of this outstanding organization. !!It was great to see so many of you in Jacksonville and to continue gaining valuable skill sets from our nationally recognized PDCs topics, emerging trend subjects and local health & safety news.!!

Best Regards,!Roberto “Rob” Rolon, FL Local Section AIHA Immediate Past President

Thoughts from Craig KimmelHello Fellow FL-AIHA Members,!!As I am wrapping up my 3 year term as President Elect, President and Past President I thought this would be a good time to do some reflection. This was my first time involving myself in a professional volunteer organization at the Board of Directors level. The experience has been extremely rewarding and one that I will never regret. It gave me the true “behind the scenes” working of a local section; especially one as successful as ours. This success is no surprise to me. We have a number of people that are very dedicated and also experienced in the “how to” operations of a successful local section…thank goodness for Wendy keeping us grounded and sharing her experience with the Board. In the 3 years in this role I was fortunate to be part of some impressive progress and accomplishments….every member should be proud.!!One big step was moving our membership information, conference registration and basic workings to a single website built and designed for organizations similar to ours. The Wild Apricot system is a step forward and there is no looking back. It took a lot of work from Brooke and she made the transition seamless. But we still need to show some appreciation for our local section to the north (Georgia Local Section) for sharing their success with the system. Steve also makes sure to keep the membership clean. Matching up our records from National and information on Wild Apricot.!!The FL-AIHA does conferences and does them well. This has gone on for a long time with many past presidents, board members and members to thank. Our bank account reflects how successful these conferences have been but they are much more than that. These conferences are the core of our networking, education and our business as a local section. There is significant research and vetting that goes into our agendas and it is time well spent. Luis makes sure to peruse the Spring and Fall National guides to bring us some of the most high profile and current PDCs. Linda also makes sure we have a solid stable of vendors and a fun filled vendor night for every conference. For our 2013 Fall Conference we worked with National. Rob and I had the chance to work on the planning committee for the Fall Conference…I have a new appreciation for what it takes to make a National Conference happen. The FL-AIHA sponsored two Technical Tours and our attendance was exceptional and this showed well at our Business Meeting.!!Probably my most proud moment was standing on stage with many of our Board Members and Past Officers / Members presenting the $25,000 check to the AIHF for the endowed scholarship. It is so impressive that a small team our members put together a plan 5 years ago that was followed and even exceeded the original plans and expectations. The foundation for this scholarship was set years ago and I see it continuing with additional scholarship contributions to future IH’s. The FL-AIHA is in good hands with Byron…he will do a great job going forward.!!Thanks so much for the opportunity to serve this great organization! - Craig Kimmel
