FLORIDA LOCAL SECTION OF AIHA WINTER 2015 NEWSLETTER

Hello fellow Florida Local Section AIHA members,

I find it hard to believe that a year has passed since I became president of our local section and in a few short months I will be passing the gavel on to our incoming President, Mark Mitchell. Our Spring conference, to be held at the Hutchinson Island Marriott on April 16 and 17, 2015, promises to be a great experience. A variety of talented speakers and outstanding presentations should captivate all who attend. You can see further details on the content of the Spring Conference provided later in this newsletter.

We are looking forward to once again teaming with the National AIHA for our Fall 2015 Conference in Orlando. This worked out very well when we did this in Miami with National and we look forward to a great turnout this fall. Partnering with the National AIHA helps build a stronger bond between our local section and National which benefits both organizations. Our local section will be arranging the technical tours for the fall conference where we will have the opportunity to provide up to a total of four tours. The Orlando area has many diverse industries with numerous opportunities for industrial hygienists to broaden their knowledge. We look forward to providing several interesting and enjoyable tours.

Our local section is fortunate to be continuing with strong membership and good attendance at our conferences. Financially, we continue to be in good condition. In response to a membership vote at the September 2014 Business meeting, we have set aside $25,000 toward the scholarship fund, following a financially successful Fall 2014 conference. We hope to present a check in the amount of $25,000 to the American Industrial Hygiene Foundation (AIHF) endowed scholarship fund during the joint Fall conference with National as we did at the 2013 Fall Conference.

We have several openings coming up on the board this spring and I encourage everyone, particularly if you have never served on the board, to volunteer. You will not only find it a very rewarding experience, you will also have an opportunity to become better acquainted with more of our members, all while working with a great group of board members. For those of you who have served in the past we welcome you to volunteer again perhaps in a new position or in the same position where your previously learned skills can be put to good use.

I look forward to seeing everyone in Hutchinson Island soon.

Sincerely,Byron Nelson, FL Local Section AIHA President

2015 Officer and Director Positions ElectionImmediate Past President, Roberto “Rob” Rolon

Hello FL Local Section Member,

As the Past-President of the FL Local Section AIHA, I have the privilege in serving as the chairman for the Nominating Committee. We have four Officer and Director Positions coming available next year (i.e. 2015). These positions include:

• President-Elect: This Officer position is responsible for seeing all local section functions run smoothly in the absence of the FL Local Section President. The President-Elect should attend the Leadership Workshop offered by AIHA National Office. This Officer position requires a good standing membership with the AIHA National Office as well as the FL Local Section AIHA. Upon completion of the one-year team, the President-Elect will automatically assume the FL Local Section President Officer position. The President-Elect serves as the chairman of the Membership Committee and promotes matters of membership for the local section.

• Director of Professional Relations: This Director position is responsible for setting up/coordinating vendors for the local section conferences. The Director position is a three year commitment and requires a good standing membership with the FL Local Section AIHA.

• Director of Communications: This Director position is responsible for the local section newsletter, web site (i.e. Wild Apricot), and other communications to the membership and submission of local section information to the AIHA journal, The Synergist, and other publications. The Director position is a three year commitment and requires a good standing membership with the FL Local Section AIHA.

• Director of Professional Development: This Director position is responsible for coordinating Professional Development Courses (PDCs) and professional certification activities. PDCs are typically held twice per year in conjunction with the FL Local Section Conferences. The Director position is a three year commitment and requires a good standing membership with the FL Local Section AIHA.

The Committee is seeking to have at least two members for each aforementioned position. I can truly say my time on the Executive Committee has been an outstanding experience. Being part of this organization has helped me grow professionally. If you have not held a position in the past or it has been a while since you last held a position within the local section, please consider self-nominating or contact me. I will assist you with submitting your nomination package. I look forward to working with you in the near future in continuing our success within the FL Local Section AIHA. The link for the nomination form is on the FL AIHA website home page.

Respectively,

Rob Rolon, Past-President of the FL Local Section AIHA

Recap of the Fall 2014 PDCs and Conference

The fall conference held on Thursday September 11th & 12th at the Orlando Airport Marriott was both interesting and successful. The PDC speakers’, Mr. David Wagner of Industrial Scientific Corp and Lesley Welch of Walt Disney World, were excellent. Mr. Wagner’s PDC was “Practical Sensing and Application of the 4-Gas/PID Monitor. Ms. Welch’s PDC was “Heat Stress Management: The Disney Safe Integrated Program Approach to Preventing Heat Illness and Injury”.

The Conference on Friday had 6 presentations ranging from a History of Personal Monitoring to Formaldehyde and Endogenous Dilemmas. The range in presentations was pretty eclectic and included Governmental Updates, Basics of Radiation Protection, Mold Remediation Applications and Protective Clothing. Most of the presentations can be viewed on the FAIHA website. It was amazing how many attendees stayed until the last presentation. Could it be for the gift card or to learn what endogenous meant? The succession of our President-Elect to President, Mr. Byron Nelson, was evident by his closing remarks. I’m sure looking forward to our next conference!!!!!
