President’s Message — Margaret Wan
Spring into Action!
Fellow Members and Friends of Florida AIHA:
Spring is here and exciting things are happening!
At the spring conference (April 12-13, 2012), we shall be celebrating our 50th anniversary.
Okay, you are going to say, “The local section started in 1961. Margaret can’t count.” I must admit that I cannot count beyond 20 as that is as many fingers and toes as I have. How spoiled we are by
calculators, computers, and smartphones! Well, another reason may be that spring is associated with new beginnings and growth; therefore it is a good time to reflect on our beginnings and look
toward the future.
Besides the educational program and networking opportunities, some of the highlights will be:
50th Anniversary Commemorative Pin – You won’t get the next pin for another 50 years!
Special Lucky Draw – Gift cards, dining certificates, and gourmet food are in store for you.
Local Section Region Representative Visit – We only have this honor once in a few years.
Recognition of Outstanding Member – Show your appreciation for this person’s contribution.
Installation of New Board Members – Meet the local section leaders of 2012-2013.
Speaking of the new board, we will not have one unless some of you volunteer to serve. We thank
those who have come forward. It is a rewarding experience to work with other members to advance the mission of the local section. In the past some officers served multiple times. This year will be the first time when we use electronic polling for the elections. Voting members will receive a link
to vote in the beginning of March.
I look forward to seeing you in St. Petersburg!

We Will Miss You Dearly Mike
We were all deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Michael
Garrett, a dear friend, colleague, mentor and fellow volunteer of the FL
AIHA chapter. Mike passed away at his home on the evening of Decem-
ber 12, 2011, with his loving wife, Linda at his side.
Mike has been the Secretary of the Florida Local Section of AIHA
since 2009. In addition to his role as Secretary, he enthusiastically took
on the responsibility of the webmaster of the FL AIHA website.
He never hesitated to do everything he could to respond to members’
requests and he always did it with a smile. Mike's wry sense of humor
and kindness will never be forgotten. He believed in Industrial Hygiene
and it showed in his unselfish dedication to promoting a healthy workplace on and off the job. He
was not only a colleague, but a mentor and a trusted friend. Mike will be greatly missed by us all.
“It Is What It Is”
By Joseph Campisano
“It is what it is, the gentleman did say,
It is what it is, on this very day.
It is what it is, to live without regret,
It is what it is, he said I should not fret.
It is what it is, that we live in a world that’s happy & sad,
It is what it is, is it really all that bad?
It is what it is, that he flew my wing,
It is what it is, that was just his thing.
It is what it is, that we became friends,
It is what it is, that this never ends.
It is what it is, what other words would you like?
It is what it is, that his name is Mike.”

Thoughts from Florida AIHA President-Elect
Craig Kimmel
We are heading west for our Spring Conference. This is our first time on Florida's west coast in a
few years and it's a great time of year to see it...and enjoy our conference. We have a great agenda
with promoting and smart PDCs on Thursday followed up by everything from Apps to Paradise on
Friday...who could say no? Don't forget the great food and accommodations for the event; not to
mention presentations that get even better each year. And of course, the best part...the opportunity
to network with your peers. We also have a student poster contest - any undergraduate or
graduate student in a curriculum related to worker protection may enter.
The prizes are:
First Place = $250.00
Second Place = $150.00
Third Place = $100.00
For more information, please contact me directly at
([email protected] or 904-928-8938).
I'm looking forward to seeing you in St. Pete.

we needed them most. Mr. Steve Skipper has graciously taken on the role of interim FL
AIHA Secretary and Mr. Joe Whalen has kindly fulfilled the responsibilities of FL AIHA

We kicked things off on Thursday with our fantastic PDC lineup which included Mr. Rob Brauch and
Dr. Salvatore R. DiNardi!
Rob has been involved in the design and manufacture of instrumentation and related devices for the IH, Safety and
Ergonomics markets since 1978, when he joined a start-up company in Rochester (you may
have heard of it - Metrosonics, Inc.) . During his 20 years at Metrosonics, he was involved in
operations, manufacturing engineering and design engineering of: noise dosimeters, heat
stress monitors, and IAQ monitors, which included the world's first portable multi-channel
datalogging IAQ monitor and physiological heat stress monitor . In 1986, Rob transitioned
into a more outwardly-focused role of sales and marketing. With Larson Davis, Rob intro-
duced field portable hand-arm and whole-body vibration monitors to the market. More recent-
ly, he moved to Casella CEL, Inc., as leader of their North American Operations and contin-
ues working to develop and make available new technology solutions for IH applications. He
has been a member of AIHA since 1986, is a past chair of the Noise and Vibration Technical
Committee. In addition to speaking on topics of IAQ, heat stress, vibration exposure and noise
exposure / hearing conservation at conferences worldwide, Rob was moderator and co-presenter with NIOSH at the
2008 DREAM (Direct Reading Exposure Assessment Methods) workshop in Alexandria VA. His current interests
and ongoing relationships with top researchers in academia and government are leading him into the field of ergo-
nomics and physiological assessment of MSD, RMI and related areas. Rob’s delighted us with the topic of: Whole-
Body Vibration, Implementing Best Practice for Managing Risk: Assessment Princi-
ples, Standards, Regulatory Guidelines, Exposure Sampling, and Practical Considera-
tions
.
Dr. DiNardi, CIH, is Professor and Chairperson Emeritus of the Environmental Health Sci-
ences Department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and an Adjunct Professor of
Environmental Health Sciences in the Arnold School of Public Health, University of South
Carolina in Columbia, SC. Dr. DiNardi is certified in the comprehensive practice of indus-
trial hygiene, and a Fellow in the American Industrial Hygiene Association.
Dr. DiNardi has published more than 40 articles in environmental health, industrial hygiene, and chemistry. John
Wiley published his book Calculation Methods for Industrial Hygiene.
He is the Editor of the first two editions of the American Industrial Hygiene Association’s best selling reference
book The Occupational Environment -- Its Evaluation, Control, and Management. Dr. DiNardi is co-author of
A Glossary of Occupational Hygiene Terms, also published by the American Industrial Hygiene Association.
Dr. DiNardi is an occupational hygiene consultant to the US Navy Submarine Force and an expert witness. Dr.
DiNardi’s research and publications are in air sampling and analysis in traditional and nontraditional workplaces.
He teaches courses in occupational hygiene and the science of terrorism including chemical, biological, radiologi-
cal, and environmental casualties. Dr. DiNardi enraptured us with his presentation: Calculation Techniques for
Industrial Hygiene and Occupational Hygiene and Their Application.

We had a fantastic lineup of experts on Friday. Mr. Alex Berti of Honeywell Safety Products / Howard
Leight® started things with his topic: Hear Forever: Best Practices in Hearing Conservation. Next was,
Robert Bee (who in our opinion has a very exciting job), Director of Safety
and Sustainability for ESPN who spoke about Hearing Conservation Chal-
lenges Associated with Television Production of Motor Sports Events.
After Robert, we had two great speakers from NIOSH—Dr. Funk and Lisa
Delaney, CIH. Dr. Renee Funk who enlightened us about the Emergency
Responder Health Monitoring and Surveillance (ERHMS) Document that
came about after the Horizon incident in the Gulf of Mexico. Ms.
Delaney provided some insight into the challenges in: Protecting Work-
ers in Large-scale Emergency Responses: NIOSH Experience in the Deepwater Horizon Response.
Dr. Salvatore Dinardi, CIH,
returned from the previous day to
provide a detailed discussion of the
Examination of Submarine
Atmospheres in Industrial Hygiene and all of the challenges asso-
ciated with it. Who knew? Rob Brauch of Casella CEL returned to
present the ins and outs of Whole-Body Vibration - Proposed Changes to Measurement Criteria & Ex-
posure Limit Criteria.
We wrapped up the day with an amazing panel on Whole Body Vibration – Implementation in the
Workplace– The panel included Leo Hearn, CIH, CSP, of Northrop Grumman; Joe Campisano, Indus-
trial Hygienist, Naval Hospital Jacksonville along with Dr. Todd Brown. Panel members discussed
what they are currently doing and the challenges associated with WBV.
Thank you to all of our presenters!

The Fall 2011 FL AIHA vendor night was a great success! Vendor participation was up from previous conferences!! We were very pleased to have 16 vendors supporting our conference!! Vendor support of the conference is a crucial as-pect of our success. Their financial support allows us to keep registration fees low in this time of tight budgets. Our members enjoyed a tempting array of ap-petizers and many won door prizes provided by the vendors. As you can tell from the pictures, it was a great networking opportunity and a fun social gather-ing!!
Please continue to support our vendors!!
