Indicates the status of the telephone:

Light flashes quickly: When the phone rings. When you have messages left on BT Answer 1571 network service.

Light flashes slowly: When the phone is on hold. duringsecrecy mode.When storing numbers.

Light stays constantly lit: When handsfree is in use.

Message indicator light (LED)

Light constantly on: Answering machine is switched on. When you have no messages.

IntroductionYour Decor 500 has been designed for ease of use and made to thehigh standards set by BT. You can expect your Decor 500 to giveyou many years of trouble-free service.

Please read the instructions carefullybefore use and keep this User Guidefor future reference.

Safety information

GeneralSimply clean your Decor 500 with a damp (notwet) cloth, or an anti-static wipe. Never use household polish as this maydamage the product. Never use a dry cloth as this may cause staticshock.Do not open the Decor 500. This couldexpose you to high voltages or other risks.

EnvironmentalDo not expose to direct sunlight.

We recommend that you do not place the product on antique/veneered wood toavoid damage. Do not stand your product on carpets or othersurfaces which generate fibres, or place it inlocations preventing free flow of air over itssurfaces.Do not submerge any part of your product inwater and do not use it in damp or humidconditions, such as in bathrooms.Do not expose your product to fire, explosiveor other hazardous conditions.

Setting up

Plan the location of yourDecor 500

Situate your Decor 500 close enough toa phone socket and mains power socketso that both cords will reach.

1 Plug the power cord intothe socket on the base

For desk mounting, please remove thewall-mounting plinth.

To prevent the cord being pulled outaccidentally, route the power cordthrough the groove as shown below.

2 Plug the adaptor into amains power socket andswitch on

Your Decor 500 will announce, ‘Answeron. Calls will be answered after 6 rings’and the message indicator light willcome on.

3 Plug the telephone linecord into the socket onthe base of the phone

Route the line cord through the grooveas shown below.

Your answering machineinforms you of the day andtime each message wasrecorded, so it is importantthat you set the correct dayand time. Your Decor 500uses the 12 hour clock.

In the event of a power failureyou will need to re-set the dayand time.

Press and hold the STOPbutton. The current daysetting will be announced.

Release the STOP button.

Press and release the � SKIPor SKIP � button to movebackwards and forwardsthrough the days of the week.

When the correct day isannounced, press and releasethe STOP button.

The day you have set isannounced and then the currenthour setting.

To switch secrecy on and off

During a call press and releasethe SECRECY button.

The call indicator light willflash slowly to indicate thatsecrecy is on.

Your caller will be put on hold.If you have music on holdswitched on, both you and yourcaller will hear music whensecrecy is pressed.

Using the telephone

To make a call

Lift the handset and wait forthe dial tone.

Dial the telephone number.

To end a call

Replace the handset.

To receive a call

When the telephone rings thecall indicator light will flashquickly to indicate that thereis an incoming call. Simply

pick up the handset to answerthe call.

To redial the last numbercalled

Lift the handset.

Press the REDIAL button. Thelast number called is dialled.

A redial number can be nolonger than 32 digits.

Note

When secrecy is in use and anothertelephone connected to the same lineis picked up, secrecy is cancelled andthe call will be transferred to thattelephone.

To make a handsfree call

Press the HANDSFREE button.

The call indicator light willcome on and you will hear thedial tone.

Dial the telephone number.

You can now talk to your callerthrough the microphone, orpick up the handset to speakto your caller privately.

Handsfree talking

The handsfree feature allows you touse the phone without picking up thehandset, giving you more freedomwhen you are speaking on the phone.You can hear the caller's voice throughthe in-built speaker.

If you put a call on hold your caller willhear music.

There are 3 volume settings to choose from: HIGH, LOWor OFF. The default setting isHIGH.

Ensure the handset is on thecradle.

Press the STORE button. Thecall indicator light will flash.

Press the ✱ button.

Press either, 1 for HIGH, 2 forLOW or 3 for OFF.

Press the STORE button.

You will hear a confirmationtone.

(If the ringer is set to OFF, the call indicator light will stillflash to indicate someone iscalling you).

To set the ringer volume

The ringer pitch can be set to:HIGH, MID or LOW. The default setting is HIGH.

Ensure the handset is on thecradle.

Press the STORE button. Thecall indicator light will flash.

You can swap between using thehandset and handsfree during a call.

If using the handset, press theHANDSFREE button and replace thehandset to talk in handsfree mode.

If using handsfree mode, lift the handsetto talk privately to your caller and thehandsfree mode will be switched off.

To change the volume whenusing handsfree

You can adjust the speakervolume when you are on ahandsfree call.

Press the VOL – + button.

There are 8 levels to choosefrom. It is pre-set to the mid-range level.

Press and release the VOL – + button to moveup through the levels. Whenthe maximum level is reachedyou will return to the lowestlevel.

You can only change the volume of a call when using handsfree.

To dial a number in theQuickdial memory

Lift the handset and wait forthe dial tone.

Press the QUICKDIAL button.

Press the memory locationnumber between 0 and 9under which the number isstored.

The number is dialledautomatically.

Note

You can mix manual and memorydialling as required, for example, youcan dial the area code 020 8 304from the memory and then completethe number manually.

Press either, 1 for HIGH, 2 forMID or 3 for LOW.

Press the STORE button.

You will hear a confirmationtone.

10 Number Quickdialmemory

You can store 10 of your mostfrequently used telephone numbers inthe Quickdial memory. Please notethat numbers can be no longer than 20digits long.

To store a number in theQuickdial memory

Ensure the handset is on thecradle.

Press the STORE button. Thecall indicator light will flash.

Press the memory locationnumber between 0 and 9under which you want to storethe number.

Enter the telephone numberyou want to store, includingthe area code if applicable.

To delete a number in theQuickdial memory

Ensure the handset is on thecradle.

Press the STORE button. Thecall indicator light will flash.

Press the memory locationnumber between 0 and 9under which you have storedthe number you wish to delete.

Press the STORE button.

You will hear a confirmationtone.

Alternatively, any existingnumber stored in theQuickdial memory can beoverwritten by entering a newnumber under the samememory location number.Simply follow the instructionsunder, ‘To store a number inthe Quickdial memory’, aspreviously shown.

BT Answer 1571 voicemail indication

If you have subscribed to BT’s BTAnswer 1571 or Call Minder, yourDecor 500 will indicate when you havereceived a voice message by themessage waiting indicator lightflashing.

BT Answer 1571 and Call Minder areinvisible answer machines located atyour local exchange which will takemessages when you are out, engagedon another call or on the Internet.

To enable your Decor 500 to let youknow you have messages you must firstsubscribe to a BT messaging service.

BT Answer 1571 is a basic answeringservice and is completely free ofcharge. To activate the service, dialFreefone 0800 003 800.

For information on Call Minder, call BTon Freefone 0800 800 150. This is achargeable Service.

Note

The message indicator light will flashuntil you have listened to all of yourvoice messages.

IMPORTANT

After an incoming call, or after liftingthe handset, your Decor 500 willcheck the line for any messages. Youwill experience about a 1 minutedelay before the message waitingindicator light flashes if messageshave been left.

Note

The message waiting indicator isactivated by a stuttered dial tone which you can hear when you pick up your phone. BT Calling Features,such as Call Diversion and CallBarring use a stuttered dial tone sotherefore will cause the messagewaiting indicator to flash even if nomessages have been left.

Using the answering machine

To switch the answeringmachine on and off

Your Decor 500 is pre-set toAnswer On.

Press the ANS ON/OFF buttonto switch the answeringmachine off. You will hear,‘Answer off ’, and the messagelight will turn off. Your Decor500 will now not be able torecord answering machinemessages.

Press the ANS ON/OFF buttonto switch the answeringmachine on. You will hear,‘Answer on’, and your currentoutgoing message isannounced. The message lightwill come on and your Decor500 will now be able to recordanswering machine messages.

To adjust the base unitloudspeaker volume

The loudspeaker volumeranges from 0-9 plus H, where0 is off and H is the maximumlevel. The default loudspeakervolume is 5.

Press the VOL + button on thebase to increase the volume.

Press the VOL – button on thebase to decrease the volume.

If you adjust the loudspeakervolume when the answeringmachine is not being used, abeep sounds at each press.When the volume reaches itshighest or lowest level twobeeps will sound.

Outgoing messages

The outgoing message is the messageyour caller hears when your Decor 500answers a call.

Your Decor 500 comes with 2 pre-recorded outgoing messages tochoose from as follows:

Answer and record allows callers toleave a message, whilst Answer Onlydoes not.

The default outgoing message isAnswer and Record.

Pre-recorded outgoing messages:

Answer and Record

‘Hello, your call cannot be taken at themoment, so please leave your messageafter the tone.’

Answer Only

‘Hello, your call cannot be taken at themoment and you cannot leave a message,so please call later.’

You can use either of these outgoingmessages or you may wish to recordyour own. You can record your ownoutgoing message up to 3 minutes long.See opposite, ‘To record your ownoutgoing message’.

To select or record your ownAnswer and Record outgoingmessage

Press and hold the ANSON/OFF button. Your Decor500 will announce, ‘Please selectoutgoing message’.

To select Answer and Record:

Press the � SKIP button.

Your selected outgoingmessage will be announced.

Your Decor 500 will then inviteyou to record your ownoutgoing message.

You can choose to record your own outgoing message or just leave your Decor 500set to its pre-recordedoutgoing message.

To record your own Answer and Record outgoing message:

Press and hold down the� SKIP button.

You will hear, “Please speakafter the tone. To end recording,release the button.”

After the tone, speak youroutgoing message clearlyabout 15–30cm from themicrophone. The messagelight will flash duringrecording.

To select Answer only:

Press the SKIP � button.

Your selected outgoingmessage will be announced.

Your Decor 500 will then inviteyou to record your outgoingmessage.

You can choose to record yourown outgoing message or justleave your Decor 500 set to itspre-recorded outgoingmessage.

To record your own AnswerOnly outgoing message:

Press and hold down theSKIP � button.

Your Decor 500 will announce,‘Please speak after the tone. Toend recording, release the button’.

To delete your own outgoingmessage and re-instate thepre-recorded message

Press and hold the ANSON/OFF button. Your Decor500 will announce, ‘Please selectoutgoing message’.

To select Answer and Record:

To select Answer Only:

While the outgoing message is being played back, press theDEL button. You will hear abeep and then the pre-recorded outgoing messagewill be played back to you.

To check the answer delaysetting

Press the SKIP � button. Thecurrent answer delay settingwill be announced.

To change the answer delaysetting

Press and hold down theSKIP � button to skip throughthe answer delay settings.

Release the button when youhear the setting you want.

The new answer delay settingwill be announced.

Memos

You can use your Decor 500 to recordmemos that can be played back byanother user. Memos are stored on theanswering machine like caller’smessages and can be any length up tothe maximum recording time available(12 minutes). Memos can be playedback in the same way as answeringmachine messages, see page 18, ‘To playback messages and memos’.

Press and hold down the� SKIP button. Your Decor 500will announce, ‘Please speakafter the tone. To end recording,release the button’.

Speak your memo. The messagelight will flash during recording.

Answer delay

Answer delay sets the number of timesyour Decor 500 will ring before theanswering machine picks up your calland starts playing the outgoingmessage. The default setting is 6 rings.

You can change this setting to between2 and 9 rings or time saver.

Time Saver

The time saver feature is useful if youare out and want to ring in and check ifyou have received any new messages.

If your answering machine is set totime saver you can check whether youhave new messages or not before youranswering machine actually answersyour call. If you have new messagesyour answering machine will answerafter 2 rings, if you do not have anynew messages, it will not answer until 6 rings. This enables you to hang upbefore you are connected, saving youtime and the cost of the call.

To play back messages andmemos

Press the PLAY button. YourDecor 500 will announce howmany messages you have.

Your messages and memoswill be played back in theorder they were received andthe day and time they wererecorded will be announced.

Both new and old messageswill be played.

Whilst messages are beingplayed back:

To pause playback:

Press the PLAY/PAUSE buttonto pause message playback.

Press the PLAY/PAUSE buttonto resume playback.

Receiving messages

In order to receive messages yourDecor 500 answering machine should be:

Switched ON

(See, ‘To switch the answering machineon and off ’, on page 14).

Set to Answer and Record

(See, ‘To select your outgoing message’,on page 15).

Callers can leave a message of up to 3 minutes long. However, your Decor500 will terminate a call under certainconditions:

• If a caller pauses for more than 4 seconds when leaving a message.

• If the memory becomes full duringrecording.

• Memory full.If the answering machine memorybecomes full the message light willflash.Your Decor 500 will not record anymore answering machine messagesand you will not be able to record a new outgoing message or recordmemos.

To clear space in the memory you will need to delete some or all of yourmessages. See page 19, ‘To deleteindividual messages’.

Press the DEL button whilethe message is being played.

You will hear, ‘Message deleted’,and the next message will beplayed.

To delete individual messages

Wait until playback of allmessages has finished and youhear, ‘End of messages. To deleteall messages, press delete’. An eight second countdownwill then begin. Press the DELbutton during the 8 secondcountdown. Your Decor 500will announce, ‘All messagesdeleted’.

To skip forwards throughmessages:

Press the SKIP � button toskip forwards to the start ofthe next message.

To skip backwards throughmessages:

Press the � SKIP button onceto skip back to the start of thecurrent message.

Press the � SKIP button twiceto skip back to the previousmessage.

To stop message playback:

Press the STOP button.

When you reach the lastmessage you will hear, ‘End ofmessages. To delete all messages,press delete’. A silent eightsecond countdown will thenbegin.

If you wish to delete all yourmessages, press the DEL buttonwithin the 8 second countdown.Your Decor 500 will announce,‘All messages deleted’.

Your Decor 500 will announcethe current security code.

To check your security code

Press and hold down the DELbutton. You will hear, ‘Securitycode setting’.

Release the DEL button. Youwill hear, ‘First digit’.

Use the � SKIP or SKIP �

buttons to move up and downthrough the digits. Eachnumber is announced as youskip through.

When you hear the numberyou want, press the DEL button.

You will then hear, ‘Seconddigit’. Choose the second digitusing the same procedure andrepeat again for the third.

When you have set all threedigits, your new security codewill be announced.

To change your security code

Remote access

Remote access allows you to switchyour answering machine on and off andlisten to your messages from anyTouchtone telephone.

To protect your privacy, messages canonly be accessed by entering a 3-digitsecurity code. The pre-set code is 000.If you change your security code it isadvisable to make a note of itsomewhere safe.

Call screening/Call intercept

You can let your Decor 500 answer anincoming call and hear your caller’s voicethrough the loudspeaker. You can thendecide whether to take the call or not.

To screen calls, make sure that theanswering machine is switched on andensure that the loudspeaker volume isset to an audible level.

When the phone rings, let theanswering machine take the call andlisten to your caller start to leave amessage.

If you decide you want to speak to thecaller in person, pick up the handset.Your Decor 500 will automatically stoprecording and you can speak to yourcaller as normal.

Operating your Decor 500remotely

To operate your Decor 500remotely

Call your Decor 500 phonenumber.

After listening to the outgoingmessage press the ✱ buttonon the phone you are using.You will hear, ‘Please enter yoursecurity code’. You have 8seconds to begin entering yourcode. If you do not, you willhear, ‘Thank you for calling’ andthe line will be disconnected.

Enter your security code.

You will hear ‘You have ‘x’ newmessages’ and the messagesare played, or ‘You have nonew messages’. At the end ofyour messages your Decor 500announces ‘To hear the mainmenu press 1’.

You now have 8 seconds toenter the main menu beforeyour Decor 500 hangs up.

Follow the instructions in themain menu to control youranswering machine (see ‘Remoteaccess menu’, page 22).

HelpIf you have any problems using your Decor 500 this section givesyou the most common solutions.

No dialling tone

Check that the telephone line cord iscorrectly connected to the wall socketand the phone.

The phone does not ring

Check that the ringer volume is notswitched to off, see page 10.

Check that the telephone line cord iscorrectly connected to the wall socketand the phone.

Are there too many other phonesconnected to the same line? See page 26,‘How many telephones can you have?’

Outgoing message does not record

Speak clearly, close enough (15-30cm)to the microphone when recordingyour message.

Check that the memory is not full.

Incoming messages do not record

Check that the answering machine isswitched ON, see page 14.

Check that the answering machine isset to Answer and Record, see page 15,‘To select or record your own Answerand Record outgoing message’.

Check that the memory is not full. You may need to delete some messages,see page 19.

Messages not deleted

Make sure you do not lift the handsetor press the handsfree button duringthe 8 second countdown.

Any action during the 8 seconds willsave the deleted messages.

You cannot hear your messagesduring playback

The loudspeaker may be set too low. Increase the volume using the

You have forgotten your remoteaccess security code

Your Decor 500 cannot be operatedremotely from another phone

Check that the phone you are using is aTouchtone phone or is set to tone dialling.

Check that you are using the correctsecurity code. See above to check your code.

When entering your code, make sureyou allow enough time, at least 2seconds, between digits for your Decor500 to recognise each one.

Some cordless telephones andpayphones are not compatible.

Guarantee

Subject to the terms listed below theguarantee will provide for the repair of,or at BT’s or its agent’s discretion theoption to replace the Decor 500, or anycomponent thereof, which is identifiedas faulty or below standard, or as aresult of inferior workmanship ormaterials. Products over 28 days oldfrom the date of purchase may bereplaced with a refurbished or repaired product.

The conditions of this guarantee are:

• The guarantee shall only apply todefects that occur within 12 monthsfrom the date of purchase, providedthat the equipment is sent to therepair address within this period.

• This guarantee does not cover anyfaults or defects caused by accidents,misuse, fair wear and tear, neglect,tampering with the equipment, or anyattempt at adjustment or repair otherthan approved agents.

• This guarantee does not affect yourstatutory rights.

Within the 12 month guaranteeperiod:

If you experience a problem with yourDecor 500 please read the Help sectionon page 23 or call the Helpline on 0870 605 8047. Calls are charged atNational rates.

In the unlikely event of a defectoccurring, please return the product,with the receipt, to the place of purchase.

If your product needs repair after theguarantee period has ended, the repairmust meet the approval requirementsfor connection to the telephonenetwork. We recommend that you callthe Helpline on 0870 605 8047 forinformation on our recommended repair agents.

Pack the unit securely, preferably in theoriginal packaging. All parts must bereturned including the mains poweradaptor. We cannot take responsibilityfor goods damaged in transit.

Technical information

How many telephones can you have?

All items of telephone equipment havea Ringer Equivalence Number (REN),which is used to calculate the numberof items which may be connected toany one telephone line. Your Decor 500has a REN of 1. A total REN of 4 isallowed, if the total REN of 4 isexceeded, the telephones may not ring.With different telephone types there isno guarantee of ringing, even when theREN is less than 4.

Switchboard compatibility

This product is intended for use withinthe UK for connection to the publictelephone network and compatibleswitchboards, which support tonedialling and time break recall. If in doubtplease consult your service provider.

Wall mounting

1. Position the cables through the wall mounting plinth as shown in the diagram.

2. Secure the wall mounting plinth into the holes on the base of thephone.

3. Swing down the wall mounting plinth into the top hole.

4. Drill 2 holes, 25mm deep using a 3mm drill, for the screws using the template. Ensure that you do not drill into any hidden wiring orpipes. Insert the wall plugs provided and then insert a screwinto each hole. Leave 2-3mm between the head of the screwand the wall.

5. Position the product onto the screws.

6. Drop down to secure.

Handset hook

Keeps the handset in place when the Decor 500 is wall mounted.

Revolve the handset catch on the baseunit. The handset will now be able torest on the hook when wall-mounted.
