but Louie had survived!

He saw a dri"ing ra" he'd need

to help him stay alive.

One of America's fastest runners and Olympic racer, Louis Zamperini suddenly found

himself adri+ when his plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean during World War II. Louie

applied his strength, determina on, and cleverness to survive many dangers at sea.

there's nothing that will stop Nick from

the full life God has planned.

Born without arms or legs, Nick Vujicic (1982-) overcame tremendous physical and

As those around her cheered, she felt

such happiness she cried.

With one wave all her doubts were gone

as she enjoyed the ride.

Growing up in Hawaii, Bethany Hamilton especially loved to surf. One calm morning, a

fourteen-foot ger shark crept up on her and swi+ly severed her arm. A+er her recovery,

this thirteen-year-old was determined to surf again. And she did -- just three weeks a+er

her accident. Overcoming doubts and physical challenges, s went on to compete in surfing

AMY CARMICHAEL RESCUER OF PRECIOUS GEMS JANET AND GEOFF BENGE

Amy Carmichael stood on the deck of the steamer, waving good-bye once again to her

old friend Robert Wilson. How could she have known she would never see him or the

Bri4sh Isles again? Amy was certain God had called her to India. Indeed! India would be

her home for the rest of her life.

Amy Carmichael's life was one of simple, determined obedience to God, regardless of

the consequences. Her service in India is a vivid example of the impact one person who

anywhere, just send me to be a missionary”.

For thirty-nine years, Mary Slessor would labor in love among the unreached, o+en

treacherous, tribes of Africa's Calabar region. Braving sickness, danger, and death on all

LOUIS ZAMPERINI REDEMPTION

JANET AND GEOFF BENGE

When the water supply canteens ran dry, Louie doubted they'd survive. He thought back

to when Eddie Rickenbacker, the World War I ace pilot, and his crew set a record of

twenty-one days dri"ing on a ra" much like the one Louie was in. When they were

picked up, the men were dehydrated, hallucina4ng and near death. Louie was sure

twenty-one days on a life ra" represented the outer limits of human survival.

As an Olympic runner, a bombardier in the Army Air Corps, and a prisoner of war, Louis

was determined to thrive and survive. Never backing down from a challenge, Louie lived

a life of adventure while modeling hope and forgiveness to a genera on. He was

commi,ed to encourage others to have faith and to persevere through life (1917-2014).

BEN CARSON A CHANCE AT LIFE

JANET AND GEOFF BENGE

Ben visited Maranda's family the night before the young girl's brain surgery. "The

surgery should take about five hours. There's a strong likelihood that Maranda could

bleed uncontrollably and die right there. Or she could survive and be paralyzed and

never speak again. There is no way to know what will happen."

As a child growing up in Detroit, Ben Carson has a dream of becoming a physician, a

dream that rose out of struggles with poverty, racism, and poor grades. As Ben

persevered, his life became one of compassion and service. Today, Benjamin Carson,

MD, is known as the American neurosurgeon with gi+ed hands. His life con nues to be

a model of what it means to care deeply, serve brilliantly, and lead courageously (1951-)

CAPTAIN JOHN SMITH A FOOTHOLD IN THE NEW WORLD JANET AND GEOFF BENGE

The mainsail cracked above them in the ferocious wind as a group of red-faced men

descended on John. "You have brought a curse on us. Overboard with you," one of the

men yelled. A chorus of cheers went up. It was the last sound John heard before he was

dumped over the side of the ship and engulfed by the dark, roiling ocean."

Enslaved by the Turks, captured by pirates, rescued by a princess-the story of John

Smith (1580-1631) would seem unbelievable. He first sought adventure in Europe,

traveling as far as Russia, dis nguishing himself in the wars. In 1607 he sailed to North

America with men established the first las ng Bri sh se,lement. Here he fought for

policies to enable the community to survive starva on, disease, and deadly a,acks.

DANIEL BOONE FRONTIERSMAN

JANET AND GEOFF BENGE

Chief Blackfish handed Daniel a belt. "The beads represent three paths," he said. "The

red path is the warpath. The white path is the path we can walk together: The black

path is death - the path you will walk if you do not surrender." Daniel knew that the

se9lers would not give up the fort. Could he help them escape the path of death?

In search of open spaces and land to call his own, Daniel Boone fearlessly led a band of

se,lers into the boun ful Kentucky wilderness. His expert hun ng ability, incredible

outdoor survival skills, and courage under fire helped his companions stay alive in a

dangerous and unknown land despite threatening encounters with soldiers, Indians,

and even other se,lers. Daniel Boone's lifelong heroic accomplishments on the fron er

made him an American legend for all me (1734-1820).

HARRIET TUBMAN FREEDOMBOUND

JANET AND GEOFF BENGE

The pounding of horses' hooves sha9ered the night's silence. Harriet froze in the shadow

of a tree and peered out into the darkness. She barely dared to breathe as three slave

catchers came to a halt only a few feet from her hiding place. Had she escaped from

danger so many 4mes only to lose her hope of freedom now?

At age six the sharp bite of a whip taught Harriet Tubman what is meant to be a slave.

She was scoffed at she resolved to escape north someday, but she would one day lead

hundreds of slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. Even huge rewards for her

capture did not stop Harriet from risking her life again and again. Whether running from

slave hunters, advising generals, or improving condi ons in war hospitals, Harriet would

not be sa sfied un l every person could experience true freedom. (1820?-1913)

LAURA INGALLS-WILDER FREEDOMBOUND

JANET AND GEOFF BENGE

Laura stared at the black cloud bloDng out the sun. The cloud was unlike anything she

had ever seen. As it got closer, it made a strange noise, like hail pel4ng the ground.

Suddenly the sky began to rain grasshoppers. The bugs clung to Laura's hair and clothes

and peered at her with bulging eyes. Soon they began to destroy Pa's crop.

From Wisconsin to the Great Plains, new adventures and landscapes filled the rich

childhood of Laura Ingalls Wilder. On a fron er steeped in both danger and great

possibility, Laura would grow up to witness firsthand the rapid transforma on of the

West as pioneers and covered wagons gave way to farms, towns, and railroads. A

pioneer, teacher, farmer's wife, and storyteller, Laura experienced one of the most

exci ng mes in American history (1867-1957).

THE LAST THING I’D EVER DO MY FAMILY'S ADVENTURE INTO FAITH AND MISSIONS

PETER JORDAN

Do you long to have stability and security?

A nice car?

A rewarding job with good pay?

A spacious home in a comfortable neighborhood?

Maybe God has something else planned for your life.

Living by faith is a frightening idea for many people. It certainly was to Peter Jordan,

who had a good job, a beau ful home, two newer cars, a growing family, and a

respectable posi on in his church. In fact, entering missions was the last thing he

thought he’d ever do. But God called him and his family out of the ordinary and into an

uncertain, but ul mately fulfilling, life of trust and obedience.

This true story of a family who shocked friends and family by leaving their comfortable

life to follow God’s call will challenge your assump ons and inspire you to new

endeavors. Faith can be a frightening place, but nothing compares to the adventure of

entrus ng yourself to the capable and loving arms of the Father.

KNOWING GOD’S HEART (INTENSIVE DISCIPLESHIP COURSE) MISSIONS AND EVANGELISM

VINNIE CARAFANO

What has God put on your heart?
