PRESCHOOL

PRESCHOOL ENRICHMENT PROGRAM This supplemental class is designed to introduce children to “specials” that will make up part of their day when they enter Kindergarten. This class is a great addition for those children in our preschool program AND for children in childcare who are transitioning out of their nap. Class will meet on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 12:30-3:00 pm. Mrs. Bell, one of our highly sought after teachers, will engage children in physical activities using the YMCA gym, gymnastics area, and pool. Children will also have access to fine arts activities and have the opportunity to extend their day and practice those important social, emotional, and self-help skills needed for Kindergarten. Children who turn 4 by September 1, 2013 are eligible. The fee is $95/month and includes a youth membership.

THE TED AND VIRGINIA SHAW JUMP INTO READING PROGRAMFunding from the Ted and Virginia Shaw Foundation has allowed the YMCA Early Learning Center to establish our first “Lending Library.” All children enrolled in the YMCA Early Learning Center childcare and/or preschool will participate while in school. Children will pick a book weekly to take home and read with their parent. A literacy activity will also be provided. Research shows that children who are read to consistently by their parents often begin reading earlier than their peers.

Upon registration, families are required to pay a non-refundable $45 security deposit.

CHILD CARE

5(630) 552-4100

INFANT PROGRAM {6 weeks - 15 months 1:4 Ratio}In the infant classroom, our primary emphasis is meeting the infant’s daily needs and providing a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment. Children are provided experiences that foster and develop their cognitive, social/emotional and motor skills while encouraging their independence. Infants are engaged in developmentally appropriate toys, books, stories and finger plays throughout the day. They are learning through routines and attachments to their caregivers. Infant daily nap and meal schedule are based on the infant’s individual needs.

TODDLERS {16-24 months 1:5 Ratio}In the toddler classroom, children are introduced to a more structured and regular routine. Children are provided an environment that encourages exploration and curiosity by offering child-initiated and teacher-guided activities. Toddlers have opportunities to make choices in art, sensory, exploration, problem-solving, music, books, self-help skills and interactive play. The toddler classroom provides a rest time as part of the daily schedule.

TWOS {1:8 Ratio}In the two’s classroom, the children discover a stimulating environment arranged into various interest and learning centers. Our goal for our two year olds include: developing valuable self-help skills such as potty training, personal hygiene, dressing self and putting toys away. We also focus on building cognitive skills, such as counting, sorting, recognizing letters, colors and shapes. Another important skill we work on is interacting with others. We have many opportunities for sharing, listening and taking turns. The two’s classroom provides a rest time as part of the daily schedule.

THREES, FOURS & FIVES {1:10 Ratio}The three to five year old classrooms focus on the growth and development of the whole child: physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. Activities and classroom centers are oriented to the child’s interest and developmental levels. Our three to five year olds are able to make choices in a variety of areas including: art and sensory activities, dramatic play, stories and books, music and movement, fine and large motor development and much more. Children continue to build their self-help skills and independence while developing their socialization skills through interactions with peers and adults.

Our program builds the foundation and prepares children for those skills needed in Kindergarten. Math, science, language areas, and pre-reading and writing are emphasized. In addition, children learn important classroom skills such as taking turns, sharing and cooperation. Children learn to develop socially acceptable behaviors and positive social relationships through cooperative play experiences.

EARLY LEARNING CENTEROur Early Learning Center provides enriching experiences which facilitate a child’s cognitive social, physical and emotional growth. We use Creative Curriculum and Teaching Strategies Gold Assessment Tool, both research based and designed to prepare your child for lifelong learning. It focuses on building a classroom community, strengthening social emotional skills while integrating content learning in the areas of math, language and literacy, science, social studies and the arts. We strive to meet the developmental needs and temperament of each child by working in partnership with families.

Our child care and preschool, licensed by the State of Illinois, provide a curriculum focused on education, leadership and character development. At the Y we believe that the first five years of life are the foundation for future success in school and life. We help children develop positive behaviors and values that continue with them throughout life. The Early Learning Center taps into each child’s unique strengths and interests to help develop confident learners.

Using the Creative Curriculum in both our child care and preschool gives parents the option for full day, full year care OR half day preschool. The Early Learning Center offers the perfect balance of learning through play and intentional teaching. Using science and social studies and “first hand” experiences as a segue way to learning, children develop confidence, creativity and critical thinking skills necessary for Kindergarten. Please contact Dana Lowe, Director, for questions on the Early Learning Center services. (630) 552-4100 extension 230 or [email protected]

Team try-outs are held each year in June as a part of our annual Summer Gymnastics Camp. All gymnasts wanting to be considered for the competition team must attend camp. For additional information please contact Gymnastics Director Karen Oelker at [email protected].

The Flyers are coached by: Karen Oelker, Amy Killey, Chloe’ Oelker, Tiffany Haag, Kathleen Lavery and Dani Iorfida. Our goal as coaches is and always has been to not only make this a strong, winning team, but to teach our girls the importance of working together and supporting each other. We believe what they learn here will stay with them long after their gymnastics careers.

The Flyers travelled to Savannah, Georgia in June for the YMCA National Championships! The following Flyers represented the team in Georgia: Rita Hames, Mikaela Morton, Bree Lee, Kayla Fields, Kylie Eike, Delaney Talty, Paige Sartori, Ingrid Magnussen, Maddy Kotler, Aleena Kallan, Lily Horsch, Tori Cavey, Audrey Berblinger and Alainna Batres. Check back in the Winter/Spring 2014 brochure for all the championship highlights!

Those not able to pay the full fee may be awarded partial assistance based on their demonstrated ability to pay and the YMCA’s ability to fund the subsidy. Financial Aid will only be provided for Fox Valley Family YMCA members. Non-members are not eligible for Financial Aid. Families receiving Financial Aid will be eligible to receive a maximum of $1,000 for every six months.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT CAMPAIGN Walk into any of our program sites or facilities and you will see people of all ages and incomes. If a person or family is unable to pay for membership, scholarships may be provided through donations from generous businesses, foundations and individuals. The demand for scholarships and program sponsorships increases every year. More than 1,000 individuals received assistance last year. Your gifts are needed to keep the YMCA open to all. Contributions can be made with stock, cash, credit card, or through a small increase to your monthly membership bank draft.

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN In addition to annual contributions for scholarship and program support, our YMCA is actively reinvesting in facilities to meet the needs of kids, teens, families, and seniors for generations to come. Every gift, large or small, is important as we look to your YMCA’s future.

ENDOWMENT / HERITAGE CLUB The Heritage Club is an organization of people who have shown their long-term interest and support of our YMCA by either a direct contribution to the Endowment Fund, or by including the YMCA in their estate plans. It is the commitment rather than the amount that is the basic factor in qualifying as a Heritage Club member.

HERITAGE CLUB MEMBERSHIP An individual or couple is qualified for Heritage Club membership by any of the following: An outright gift to the YMCA Endowment Fund of cash, securities, property, or other marketable assets. Creation of a unitrust, annuity trust, gift annuity, pooled-income fund, short-term trust or other life estate program. Naming the Fox Valley Family YMCA as the eventual recipient of a life insurance policy, qualified retirement plan, 401 (k), 403 (b), or IRA. Naming the Fox Valley Family YMCA to receive a bequest in one’s will. Expressing intent to do any one of the foregoing at such time as circumstances permit.

VOLUNTEER Donate your time! The YMCA is always looking for volunteers, especially for our special events. DEBBIE FERGUSON YMCA MEMBER of the QUARTER This is Debbie’s story… ”I started this journey, if you want to call it that, not for the betterment of me. I’ve always been a big girl. I’m funny and very personable so I knew I was big, but I was happy...or so I thought. I started this because I took my 12 year old in for his junior high physical and found out what he actually weighed. Talk about a slap in the face. There was no one to blame but myself. He is one of the few people in my life I would take a bullet for and I realized that through my actions, I was slowly killing him. WOW! So I asked myself, ‘What should I do?’ I joined the YMCA! But this situation called for drastic measures. I’ve been on just about every fad diet I can think of. Some I probably even made up myself. I know what I should be eating and I know that I need to work out, so I started going two days a week. I asked my son if he wanted to join and he said, ‘Naa I’m good.’ So I said, ‘Let’s rephrase that…you’re going and you’re working out with MOM!’ It worked! DJ has lost about 50 pounds and looks great! In trying to fix my mistakes and help my son get his life back, I found out that I really enjoyed working out too. I went from two days to three days to four days and more. Then, on a whim, I tried spin class with Jenny Miller. I watched a little of a class that was ending and thought either she is insane or I am...I can’t do that! My workout buddy Lisa Fox and I decided to try the class. OMG! We did it and it was awesome! Sore? YES! Tired? YES! Almost couldn’t get down the stairs? YES! I haven’t stopped going. I even got my own spin bike for the winter days when I couldn’t make it in. Without the support I received through the YMCA I’m not sure I would have done so well. As of last month I’ve lost 138 pounds! I’ve got a ways to go, but with the encouragement from everyone at the YMCA, I’ll know I’ll get there. Thank you!”

SARA CONVERSE YMCA EMPLOYEE of the QUARTER Sara has worked at the YMCA since August 2007 and works mostly with the Aqua Force swim team but has helped out with swim lessons, Kids Zone and wherever else the Y has needed her. Her favorite part of her job is that everyone at the Y is like a big family. She loves that her kids, Carson (7) and Audry (5) are so familiar with the Y employees and members that it just feels like home. (She also loves adding to her YMCA and Aqua Force tshirt collection!) Swimming has always been a part of Sara’s life. She enjoys watching the kids grow in the sport, not only physically, but also learning life lessons that they will use as they grow older. A favorite quote is, “What does practice make? Perfect? No! Practice makes habit.”
