Fall 1 Fall 2

SWIM LESSON PROGRAMSThis past summer, we launched a brand-new swim lesson program. This new child-centered curriculum will help your child swim confidently at his or her own pace. All classes will focus on water safety, having fun while learning, building character and increasing self-confidence. We’ll provide parents with helpful resources and weekly feedback to help them be active participants in their child’s learning process.

When signing your child up for swim lessons, all you have to do is choose the appropriate age range:

• Parent/Child (6 months to 3 years)• Preschool (3-5 years)• School Age (5-12 years)

Then, on the first day of class, the instructor will determine which of the following skill levels your child will begin in. From there, they’ll progress up through the levels at their own pace.

PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS(AGES 6 MONTHS TO 3 YEARS)

Close supervision is the best way to prevent drowning. Through this program, parents and caregivers will learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies. This program also promotes water enrichment and aquatic readiness for children ages 6 months to 3 years of age. Levels in this phase include:

A: Swim Starters: Water Discovery Parents accompany children in this class, which introduces babies and parents to the aquatic environment through exploration that encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water:

• To encourage developmentally appropriate expectations by parents of babies enrolled in water enrichment programs

• To introduce and emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents

• To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

• To provide parents and children the opportunity to share common experiences, socialize, and interact with one another

B: Swim Starters: Water Exploration In this class, parents are guided to work with their child to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills. The general goals of the program are:

• To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with parents’ help

• To introduce basic water skills such as kicking, breath control, and body control or balance

• To encourage children to make purposeful movement in the water and movements in response to visual and verbal cues

• To have fun in the water using toys and flotation devices and interacting with other children

• To emphasize basic aquatic safety to parents

• To provide a positive parent/child aquatic experience and an opportunity to build the parent/child relationship

Fall 1 Fall 2

PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS(AGES 3-5 YEARS)

Designed to meet the needs of preschoolers, these stages build upon a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention by teaching water adjustment and swim-readiness skills through fun and creative activities. Levels in this phase include:

Level 1: Water Acclimation The water acclimation class introduces swimmers to the pool and helps them develop safe water habits. Children develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for the child’s future progress in swimming. The general goals of the program are:

• To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own skills with instructors’ help

• To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices

Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the class are:

• To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through water

• To develop basic water safety skills in the form of jump, push, turn and grab, and swim-float-swim

Level 3: Water Stamina In this class, children focus on swimming longer distances and are introduced to rotary breathing, integrated rotary breathing and integrated arm and leg action. In the event of falling into a body of water, children learn how to swim to safety. The goals of the program include:

• To develop rotary movement with breathing in the form of side glide recovery position

• To encourage forward movement on the front and back

• To practice safety techniques in deep water

Level 4: Stroke Introduction In this class, swimmers focus on developing basic swimming strokes and personal water safety. The goals of the program include:

• To develop the front crawl, back crawl and butterfly strokes

• To practice safety techniques in deep water

SCHOOL AGE SWIM LESSONS(AGES 6-12 YEARS) For kids in elementary and primary school, a foundation of water safety and drowning prevention is made by teaching water adjustment and skill readiness for children from five to twelve years of age.

The general goals of the program are:• To encourage children to explore their aquatic environment and their own

skills with instructors’ help

• To teach basic aquatic and boating safety, and allow children to accept some of the responsibility for safe practices

Level 2: Water Movement In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, forward movement and directional change. This stage also reinforces how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. The general goals of the program are:• To encourage children to propel themselves and glide through the water

The goals of the program include:• To develop rotary movement with breathing in the form of side glide

recovery position

• To encourage forward movement on the front and back

• To practice safety techniques in deep water

Level 4: Stroke Introduction In this class, swimmers focus on developing basic swimming strokes and personal water safety. The goals of the program include:• To develop the front crawl, back crawl and butterfly strokes

• To practice safety techniques in deep water

Level 5: Stroke Development In this class, students continue to work on their stroke technique and all major competitive strokes are introduced. The goals of the program include:• To develop stamina in the front crawl and back crawl strokes• To develop the breaststroke and butterfly strokes• To build endurance techniques for deep-water safety

Level 6: Stroke Mechanics In this class, students refine their stroke technique on all of the major competitive strokes and learn about competitive swimming. The goals of the program include:• To develop endurance in the competitive strokes• To develop skills related to competitive swimming like racing starts

and flip turns• To enhance skills and build endurance in deep water
