CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK

BOBAN6yo G Bernardini - Kenbelle by Kenmare

Five Group One races now sit alongside Boban’s name - The Epson, Emirates, Chipping Norton, Doomben 10,000 and Memsie. On Saturday at Caulfield from his inside gate his regular rider Glyn Schofield made sure he had Boban travelling kindly three back along the inside of the fence.

With few options when coming to the turn, they stuck close to the inside and it worked out perfectly. Boban’s great will to win kicked in with him producing his trademark devastating turn of foot to have a short-head over his rivals on the line in an exhilarating finish.

Having returned to form last preparation in Queensland winning the Doomben 10,000, Chris and the team have found the key to managing the now six year old who suffered a bleeding attack and mixed his form in the preparation following that hiccup. Now well and truly back on track, Boban’s next assignment is the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes over the mile next weekend at Flemington.

Berrimilla7yo M Fastnet Rock - Purrfection by Tale of the Cat

This daughter of Fastnet Rock owned by the Ingham Family confirmed her liking for Rosehill when winning over 1400m at her home track on Saturday. Hugh Bowman was in the saddle and with the hefty impost of 60.5kg, he settled Berrimilla just worse than midfield early on before producing her in the straight for a decisive victory.

This was a very smart performance considering that she was conceding 6.5kg to both the placed horses. This was a sixth career win for this consistent mare and she has now earned just over $400,000 in prize money for connections and in time will be a valuable addition to the Ingham Family broodmare ranks.

this week’s video update

wudang mountain3yo G Big Brown - Meriwether by Catbird

Hugh Bowman and Wudang Mountain continued their perfect association at Rosehill on Saturday. Having raced on four occasions, Hugh has partnered Mr Lai’s statuesque gelding in both of his second up wins to date.

The combination enjoyed a nice run in transit, settling on the fence in about fifth before breaking through a gap and running on strongly over the last 100m, defeating a competitive field of quality up and coming three year olds. He will next be aimed at the Group Three Spring Champion Stakes at Newcastle on the 18th of September.

dupe ‘em4yo G Duporth - Snow Queen by Snowland

Dupe ‘Em put on another tidy display to over-come a tough run on Wednesday and record back-to-back wins at Canterbury. From his wide gate he jumped well however with Hugh Bowman aboard they found themselves in an impossible position unable to slot in and get cover.

Bowman’s experience saw him not panic, with the pair rolling with the punches out wide to take advantage of their momentum in the straight to record a narrow but decisive victory carrying a hefty 59kgs. Having now banked just over $200,000, this consistent son of Duporth has been up racing a while but is thriving and so will continue onto another target, most likely at Randwick on the 19th over 1200m.

toss and tell4yo G O’Reilly - Heads or Tales by Tale of the Cat

Having been placed on a few occasions previously this son of the late great sire O’Reilly broke through for a maiden victory at Hawkesbury on Saturday over 1800m. Chad Lever was on board and he gave this promising type a dream run during the race, settling him in fourth position in the six strong field.

Once the field turned into the straight, Lever pulled his mount to the outside of the leaders and he stuck on strongly to get the bob in close to the line. This was a strong staying performance and this Kiwi bred looks like he will continue to improve as he steps up in trip.

Waller goes solo for Wyong Gold Cup bid

Chris Waller will rely on Beyond Thankful as his lone runner in the Wyong Gold Cup, a race he has made his own since emerging as Sydney’s premier trainer.

Waller has won four of the past five editions of the $150,000 race, starting with Hawk Island in 2010.

The Verminator, Wazn and Multilateral have added to Waller’s haul with his sequence broken by the win of the Gai Waterhouse-trained Julienas in 2012.

Beyond Thankful will back up on Friday after finishing fourth to Magic Hurricane in the Premier’s Cup at Rosehill.

Waterhouse will have two runners including the topweight The Offer (62kg) which returned to winning form in the Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury when first-up since an unsuccessful cameo during the Queensland winter carnival.

She will also be represented by Cafe Society, a well-performed import which finished third to Australia’s latest weight-for-age star Contributer during last year’s Royal Ascot carnival.

Fifteen runners accepted for the Listed race but Orion Love has been scratched after she was also paid up to run at Randwick.

The John O’Shea-trained Havana Cooler will be one of the favourites after he made a luckless Australian debut at Rosehill last month.

After racing a long way off the leader, Havana Cooler found the line generously after being held up until well into the straight before finishing a half length behind Beyond Thankful in sixth place.

Orbec was beaten a lip in the same race when stepping out in Australia for the first time for trainer John Thompson. - AAP Turf.

quality & qantity in chelmsfordChris Waller has a record 11 runners in the feature race at Randwick, but he says only two are genuine winning chances.

Chris Waller’s dominance of Saturday’s Chelmsford Stakes field begs an obvious question - is it healthy for Sydney racing?

A runaway winner of the past four Sydney trainers’ premierships, Waller has already produced more than double the amount of city winners than nearest rival Gai Waterhouse in a season that is just five weeks old.

On Saturday he will have 11 runners - almost three-quarters of the field - in the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes, a race he has won for the past three years and in which he trained the first six horses across the line 12 months ago.

The gathering of nine individual Group One winners from one stable in one race might be a record, but it is also reflective of a trainer at the peak of his powers.

But Waller says his numbers don’t necessarily make for a winning formula.

“They’re not all there for their grand final,” Waller said.

“I see the race as there being two genuine chances from my stable but a couple of horses there capable of an upset.

“There are a few horses almost ready to win, they just need a bit further, and four there that are genuine two-milers resuming.

“When you break the race down as simply as that, I don’t see it as us being there trying to take over the world with 11 genuine chances of winning the race.”

Waller sees the Chelmsford Stakes as a perfect starting point for his Cups horses - Preferment, Grand Marshal, Who Shot Thebarman and Opinion.

It also offers a suitable stepping stone for middle-distance weight-for-age horses like Doncaster Mile winner Kermadec and top mare Royal Descent.

Despite his numbers he has only two of the top four picks in betting with Godolphin’s Hartnell favourite and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Pornichet also well fancied.

Three of Waller’s runners - Junoob, Grand Marshal and Opinion - share the bottom of the betting barrel at $101.

Love or hate the empire Waller has built, his results speak for themselves.

And while meticulous, thoughtful and patient, the man who has become Australian racing’s benchmark also has a less serious side.

“I’m hoping the Chelmsford is a very strong form race when we look back on it,” Waller said.

“I hope a Cox Plate winner, Epsom winner, Melbourne Cup winner and a Caulfield Cup winner all come out of this race. - AAP Turf.

Royal Descent.

GROWTH PLATE RADIOGRAPHS Owners of recently turned two-year-olds in the stable will have no doubt received an update from Chris in recent months mentioning the maturity of their youngster’s knees and therefore their capability to be, or not to be, put under pressure at this stage. A simple x-ray is taken to measure this with stable vets Dr Tim Roberts and Ross Alexander kindly supplying the following information explaining the importance of this information in relation to the longevity of a horse’s career.

Radiographs of the distal radius growth plate DRGP (aka:distal radius physis) of yearlings gives an indication of the maturity of a young horses skeletal structure. It is important for the DRGP to have started to close before a young horse is put under intense pressure in training. Growth plate closure starts in the distal extremities and moves towards the upper limb. If the DRGP are closed then all growth plated below it have already closed. Growth plates are so named because this is where the growth in the long bones occurs increasing their length and as such the horses height.

Generally young horses can do light work before DRGP closure but fast work is not advised until DRGP closure has commenced. This examination is important at it has a direct correlation to the future soundness throughout the rest of a horses career. It is further important to understand that it takes at least 90 days for a horse to move from one grading to the next and in some cases it takes in excess of 120 days. The least predictable period between grades is from the Grade C (No physeal closure evident) to Grade B - ( Closure starting).

Whilst the date of birth of the individual yearling is important, size and scope also play a significant role. It is because of the unpredictability of closure and the inability to determine closure clinically that makes radiographic examination so important.

This process involves one AP (front to back) radiograph of one knee taken when the yearling comes into the stable for orientation preparation and before starting pace work which gives us a definitive picture of the stage of closure of the DRGP. While this is not the only sign of maturity it is something we can measure and gives us a predictable guide as to a yearlings ability to cope with more intensity in their training program. Chris Waller adopted this protocol since purchasing his first yearlings in Australia and it is one of the management tools that have given the horses under his care longevity in their racing careers.

If a horse is a Grade C a second radiograph is recommended after 60-90 days should the horse be heading for early 2 year old races. If a horse is a Grade B then it would be a reasonable assumption that the horse would be Grade A within 90 days.

“Grade C” Distal radius physeal (growth) plate showing no sign of closure. These horses should not be worked at a high intensity but can be educated and worked.

“Grade B” Distal radius physeal (growth) plate starting to close. These horses can start working at 3/4 pace and move on towards racing.

“Grade A” Distal radius physeal (growth) plate fully closed. These horses can race.
