CHRIS WALLER RACING – WINNERS THIS WEEK

HE’S YOUR MAN 6YO G Cape Cross – Via Saleria (Arazi) Rosehill, Listed Winter Challenge 1500m, short neck. He’s Your Man led home a stable trifecta, backing up his great first up run last month. Fellow import and Fair Salinia bred I’m Imposing (funnily meeting He’s You Man on the other side of the world) was promoted to second after stable-mate Coup Ay Tee was relegated to third on protest. The stable also has Sven and Carnia Hansen’s Fair Salinia bred I’m Imposing, a half-brother to the stable’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, Reliable Man. They also bred He’s Your Man and race him with partners. Running over well short of his best distance, He’s Your Man looks to be in for an exciting preparation and will now target the Premier’s Cup at the end of the month over 1800m at Rosehill.

MURDER OF CROWS 4YO G Flying Spur – Sally Magic (Keltrice) Rosehill, BM75 1100m, 0.3L. Murder of Crows powered home for an impressive and rewarding victory for his team of patient and deserving owners at Rosehill on Saturday. First up after working through a few glitches in recent months, Tommy Berry did a great job to rate the imposing son of Flying Spur perfectly in the running. He will wait for the next suitable race for him which will be in three weeks at Rosehill in a BM95 over 1200m.

BAGMAN 8YO G Easy Rocking – Bada Bing (Dehere) Moonee Valley, Handicap 2040m, 0.3L. Winning the first race of the season for the stable, Bagman ran home strongly for a narrow but decisive victory in the hands of Craig Newitt. Kept within striking distance in the running, he quickly skipped away down the short Moonee Valley straight for his 11th career win. He is most likely to start next on the 16th at Caulfield in an Open class race over 2000m.

Harrier jet 3YO G Dane Shadow – Borobodur (Strategic) Canterbury, 3yo BM67 1550M, 1.3L. Overcoming his wide barrier with ridiculous ease and then rated perfectly by Hugh Bowman to lead, Harrier Jet skipped away from his four rivals at Canterbury for his second win from four starts. Stable-mate Rio Grande ran on encouragingly for third and is now spelling and looks a promising stayer in the making. Harrier Jet will now be aimed at a BM70 on the 30th over 1400m.

Awards aplenty for chris waller racing Boban being crowned Horse of the Year at last night’s NSW Racehorse Owners’ Association Awards capped an almighty week of celebration for the stable.

Co-owner Matt Dominello accepted the Miler of the Year award earlier in the night for the galloper’s Group 1 mile treble last season and returned to the stage where he pointed out that this time last year, they were looking forward to Boban’s return to racing in a BM90 race. Fast forward 12 months and the now 5yo has amassed over $1.6 million and has provided plenty of thrills for his grateful team of owners with Matt summing it up perfectly “He’s the horse that keeps us all in racing, the one that promises a lot and then goes on to deliver. Chris and his team are the benchmark in the Australian training ranks and we thank them for getting Boban to deliver the results he has.”

The Ingham Family’s ultra consistent mare Catkins stepped in to secure the Queen of the Autumn title, won by stable-mate Red Tracer last year. Lyn Ingham and Debbie Kepitis accepted the award on behalf of their father and brothers, thanking their father, the great Bob Ingham for giving them such a great passion to share as a family.

Earlier in the week at a separate function, Chris was officially awarded his fourth consecutive TJ Smith Award for topping the NSW Metropolitan Trainer’s Premiership and his fourth consecutive Bart Cummings Medal, nine votes ahead of Peter Snowden.

“Chris Waller continues to amaze the industry with his exceptional feats,” Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys said on the night. “To win four successive Bart Cummings Medals in an arena littered with some of the best racing talents anywhere in the world is astonishing."

Also providing a big thrill for the stable,

one of our team has taken out the NSW Strapper of the Year Award. Ever so deservedly awarded to CWR foreman Glenn Barnes last year, this year it was our George Tucker receiving recognition for his hard work and dedication. Chuffed to be picked out as one of NSW’s finest strappers George commented “It’s an honour. I never thought I would get something like this and to be picked out is very special. Chris has a knack with horses and I’m proud to be recognised alongside him on such a special night.”

Sense and Reason (Exceed and Excel) also received an award with her consistency winning her the BOBs Horse of the Year title ahead of stable-mate Abbasso (Encosta de Lago).

Celebrations continue this Saturday with the stable’s annual end of season staff party at Rydges Parramatta. In past years with a dress up theme, we’ve seen plenty of great costumes however fortunately/unfortunately depending on who you talk to, the event is going to be a cocktail party.

Hands, heels and Hugh. Queen of the Autumn, Catkins.

Boban’s connections celebrate his Epsom win.

Chris & George Tucker.

Kicking goals for kids with cancer The Kicking Goals for Kids with Cancer 24-hour Soccer (Futsal) Marathon is about kids (and parents too!), raising money for other kids at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. We are pleased to be holding our third annual event which aims to raise much needed funds for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. What better way to do this than by playing a 24 hour continuous game of soccer!

Straight from the horse’s mouth Apart from the stable’s obvious success, a comment often made about what sets the team at Chris Waller Racing apart is our communication with owners. Each week Chris produces at least one report for every horse in the stables ensuring that all owners have a clear idea of their horse’s progress, what they’ve been up to over the past week and where their preparations are likely to head.

One skeptical owner recently even went as far as to put it out there that it’s not possible for Chris to do a report on every horse and that we must make them up however as our carpals and keyboards can attest, they all come courtesy of the man himself. Being the glue that sticks it all together Chris is the only one who can produce the reports knowing each horse intimately, having watched each of them work and drawing information from many a spreadsheet including their weights and his plans for the preparation.

Each Monday and Tuesday morning, Chris starts recording individual reports which pulls all of this information together and then he sends them through in batches to be shared around the team to type up. As we go, each horse crossed to make sure none are left out.

Having sent Brigantin and Lucky Chappy to be trained Chris Waller Racing, global racing juggernaut Team Valour International’s Barry Irwin famously commented in our newsletter earlier this year “Chris Waller's resuscitation of Brigantin has been startling to watch. Also, if I communicated as well as him, I probably wouldn't have been divorced three times!”

Said Chris of his commitment to communication “Owners spend a lot on having their horse trained in the city and deserve to be fully informed on a regular basis. In addition to this, it also saves myself and the rest of the team time as by being on the front foot and having owners well informed and aware of where we are heading, it saves us having to return a lot of emails and phone calls.”

GETTING TO KNOW DEIDRE SOUTH Born and raised in Blacktown, NSW Deidre is the eldest of four kids. She completed certificate 1 in performance horse skills at Richmond Tafe in 2006 and did a weeks work experience at the Mounted Police in Redfern and a weeks work experience at Featherdale Wildlife Park in 2004. Deidre’s Grandfather bought 28 acres at Mudgee 30+ years ago and found some horses a few years later. When he passed away it was handed down to Deidre’s dad and his siblings which has allowed her to be around horses since she was a baby.

Nickname? Preferably called Dee but also called DeeDee and others!!

Best quote? Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday!

Role/Connection with CWR? I first worked for Mr Waller in November 2007 as a stable hand/strapper then I left in late 2011 to learn and experience new things! I came back in April 2013 as a stable hand/strapper but I'd also gained further experience and knowledge of horses!

Favourite part of the job? I'd say most of it! Just being able to look after and watch them grow tops the list!

Favourite horse? All my straps are my favourite! I can't single any of them out! But a few of my past straps will stay in my heart like Shellscrape, Metal Bender, Altius etc!

Best horse ever seen? All my straps are the best I've ever seen haha! Truly though I'd say Black Caviar and Makybe Diva!

Role model? I don't have a particular role model but I will say asking a lot of questions is where it got me today!

Favourite food? I can't pick between my boyfriend’s chicken satay and my spaghetti bowl!

Favourite jockey? I have two equal favourites and they are Hugh Bowman and Jim Cassidy

If you weren’t in racing, what would you have done? I would of tried to get a job at the mounted police stables! But if I couldn’t go there I’d be in a pet shop or a zoo/wildlife park!!

If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite? I'd have to say Monty Roberts (the horse whisperer) and Caesar Milan (the dog whisperer).

Event in the world that you would most like to attend? The Melbourne cup! I've never been and would love to go! Even better to be able to strap a horse in the race but I won't push my luck.

What would you do with your last $5? If it was my last $5 till pay day, I would back a long shot! If it was my last $5 all together I would put it in the bank and try to gain interest!

Tip for the weekend? Runhardasun.

Sacred Falls continues steady path to Cox Plate Dual Doncaster Mile winner Sacred Falls finished fifth in a barrier trial on Monday as he gears up for a spring assault aimed at the Cox Plate.

The Chris Waller-trained galloper was buried away back along the rail in the 1030 metre heat, which was run at a fast pace courtesy of the talented Rock Hero.

The son of O'Reilly wasn't pushed to the line and finished alongside stablemate, and Auckland Cup winner, Who Shot Thebarman.

"Each preparation I sit on him he just feels that little bit stronger," jockey Tommy Berry said.

"They went quick today and that'll bring a few of these on but I didn't ask him to do much.

Sacred Falls is yet to win a Group I weight-for-age race but showed in the autumn he can measure up to the best when second in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) behind It's A Dundeel.

"That was a real race, not a sit and sprint like some of the weight-for-age can be. That augurs well for a race like the Cox Plate," he said.

The winner of the trial was speedy filly Alpha Miss, who clocked 1.01.74 for the trip.
