Thanks to Catkins reliability, the team did get a trip to the winners circle in the past week with some good and frustrating runs not quite getting across the line in front over the past week however the horses are all well and as it all swings in roundabouts, we’re sure our turn will come in coming weeks as we head into the business end of the Autumn Carnival. The brilliant Catkins overshadows her opposition on Saturday in the Breeders Classic for the Ingham Family.

CHRIS WALLER RACING CHRIS WALLER RACING – WINNERS THIS WEEK

catkins 5yo M by Dubawi – Salix Caprea by Catbird

Catkins enhanced her reputation as one of the stable’s, and country’s, favourite mares. Being one of the most honest and consistent horses in work she produced another game first up win for back to back victories in the Group 2 Breeders Classic at Rosehill on Saturday. This was a 13th career victory to go with 10 minor placing from 28 starts for the Ingham family owned grey, who pushed her total earnings to over $1.3 million in prize money. The win also enhanced her brilliant record fresh as this win made it six wins and one second placing from eight first up runs.

Ridden by her regular partner Hugh Bowman who has struck up a great relationship with the mare, he had her travelling well throughout in third place in the perfect stalking position. Hugh nursed her for as long as he could in the straight ,mindful that she was fresh up and conceding weight to the place getters. He didn’t want to punish her and it was only late on that he asked for maximum effort and the mare responded in her customary honest fashion to wear down the gallant runner up Lilliburlero and record another gutsy victory. Having come within a whisker of winning her Group 1 in the 2013 Myer Classic at Flemington when beaten by stablemate Red Tracer another crack at Group 1 glory this season will be on the mare’s agenda. Not many would argue that she deserves a win at the highest level as reward for her admirable consistency and will to win.

STABLE CONTINUES TO UNLEASH BIG GUNS

The highlight of the Randwick card on Saturday sees the running of the Group 2 Apollo Stakes. The stable is responsible for no less than six of the field with many of last years top performers kicking off their campaigns. Weary, Junoob, Boban, Foreteller, Hawkspur and He’s your Man are all set to line up in this 1400m event and are all looking to emulate former winner and stable favourite Danleigh who took out the 2010 version when narrowly beating another stalwart, the greatly missed Rangirangdoo.

Danleigh was ridden to victory in that 2010 race by Hugh Bowman who will partner talented mare Lucia Valentina in this Saturday’s race and she is one of a host of talented performers that line up in opposition to our sextet of CWR representatives. Following are Liam’s thoughts on our Apollo runners:

Boban ($6) – He’s come through the first-up run well. The soft track didn’t suit so we’re hoping for a good track on Saturday. He’s drawn well. His main target is a return tilt at the Chipping Norton.

Foreteller ($16) – He’s back in good order. He will improve with this run though. We’ll follow a weight-for-age path towards either the Australian Cup or Ranvet. He’s had success in Victoria previously so we have a couple of options.

He’s Your Man ($5.50) – He’s come back really good. A little bit soft first-up as you’d expect heading into a long campaign but he’s a high class horse so it won’t be a surprise if that class carries him a long way here. The Doncaster would be his main aim but could go to a race like the Ranvet then come back in trip for the Doncaster.

Hawkspur ($26) – First-up run was only fair. Did something similar last campaign though so not too concerned yet. It took him a few runs to find his best form last autumn. He will keep improving.

Junoob ($51) – Will probably be outpaced here first-up. The distance is too short. He will be targeting the Ranvet and BMW.

Weary ($6) – Has come back in great order and has the runs on the board. He was at his best last autumn and appears right back to that level. It was a soft track though first-up whereas it could be firm on Saturday. That’s the only niggling concern I have with him.

When pressed as to which of the six was most likely to win, Liam said "I think He’s Your Man is the best horse, but whether he can win first-up at 1400 I am not sure. All of ours could be a bit vulnerable,” he said.

Later on the same Randwick card the Listed Triscay Stakes sees admirable performers Champagne Cath and Calming Influence both line up looking to improve the stables record in this particular race with Chris having been responsible for saddling the winner in two of the past three runnings of this event. Dystopia scored in 2012 and She’s Clean tasted victory in 2013, both of course carrying the famous cerise colours of the Ingham Family.

Good luck to the connections of all of our runners this weekend in New South Wales and

Victoria.

Foreteller - not just a pretty face.

He’s Your Man.

Champagne Cath.

CHRIS WALLER RACING

Athletic, precocious colt by beneteau This recent acquisition by Star Thoroughbreds is by the current leading first season sire, Beneteau (Redoute’s Choice).

Interestingly, like this colt, three of Beneteau’s most precocious 2yos are from Mr Prospector line mares. Also in his favour is that, like the stable’s brilliant 2yo winner last week in Always Alison, he is from a Fusaichi Pegasus mare. To date, his dam has produced three to race to date and all have been winners and this athletic and precocious youngster looks set to continue the mare’s brilliant record.

The team’s inspection notes say it all “A running type of colt who is typical of the breed. Good scope, athletic gait and looks a 2yo runner.”

Just $13,500 inc GST for a 10% share.

Waller targets Orr with Beaten Up Chris Waller is looking to begin the Group One year the same way he left the last. The Waller-trained Moriarty claimed the final Group One of 2014 when he won the Kingston Town Stakes in Perth. Beaten Up will try to keep the ball rolling in 2015 in the C F Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

"He will be nominated for the Apollo Stakes in Sydney as well but I want to see him in Melbourne because the Australian Cup is the goal," Waller said.

"He came through his first-up run really well."

The winner of the 2013 Doomben Cup, Beaten up finished eighth in the Expressway Stakes (1200m) beaten less than three lengths. His stablemate Weary won the Group Two sprint and will be among Waller's runners in the Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

The trainer admits to being disappointed with the Expressway performance of Boban who finished ninth after failing to show his customary dash at the end of the race. He is hoping the soft track was the reason and will take the gamble he will improve in the Apollo. Waller will run Winx and Amicus in the Light Fingers Stakes for three-year-old fillies at Randwick. Amicus is a Group One winner of the Thousand Guineas while Winx ran second to First Seal in the Flight Stakes.

"The Coolmore Classic is the aim for Amicus and she has come back a lot stronger and is already a Group One winner so this race will tell us how they stack up against the other fillies," Waller said. Source: Caryl Williamson.
