Agricultural Economics M.S. students Natalie Graff, Megan Harper, Hank Nelson, Micah Newton, and Mason Moore along with Animal Science PHD student Rebecca Kirkpatrick were on the trip. Thanks to an invitation from Texas Corn Producers, they were able to attend the Southern Corn Caucus meeting where issues important to southern corn farmers were discussed. They also were invited to sit in on the National Corn Growers Association Public Policy Taskforce where they heard FSA Administrator Richard Fordyce speak on implementation of the 2018 Farm Bill. The class was able to visit with Texas Corn Producers board members about their opera- tions and what they would like to see from the Ag Economics profession to make their farms more profitable. Much of the experience came outside of the educational meeting when the students were able to attend the trade show and make connections with various government and agribusiness representatives from across the country. They also visited the National Association of Wheat Grower s booth where newly appointed President Ben Scholz from Lavon, TX posed with them for a picture. Academic Program Review Many of our faculty spent time this week participating in the Academic Program Review of our department that took place Monday through Wednesday. I want to express my appreciation to the members of the external review team Dr. Holly Wang (Purdue University), Dr Jill McCluskey (Washington State University), Dr. Madhu Khanna (University of Illinois), and Dr. Tim Beatty (University of California, Davis), and to everyone who took time to meet with the team during the multiple sessions across the three days. We were given a briefing of the findings on Wednesday morning, and now we wait for the final report. 2019 Texas Ag Forum As a reminder, the 2019 Texas Ag Forum will be held on Monday, March 18, 2019, at the Hilton Austin Airport (9515 Hotel Drive, Austin, TX). Dr. Joe Outlaw says the meeting will cover major changes in the new farm bill, as well as, including a look at the sensitivity of commodity prices to changes in exports and both short and long-term views on trade, and outlook for U.S. meats, grains and fibers. Advanced registration is $150 prior to March 15 and covers attendance and meals. Same day registration is $175. Register with Christy Lewis at the Texas Agricultural Cooperative Council, 512-450-0555, or with the Agricultural and Food Policy Center , 979-845-5913. Pay by mail or in person at the event after registration. Mail payment to Agricultural and Food Policy Center, Department of Agricultural Economics, 351 AGLS Building, 2124 TAMU, College Station, Texas 77843-2124.
