For the past six years the Summer Sessions catalog cover has been designed by a Pacific student in either the Illustration or Advanced Graphic Design class. The project is a coordinated effort between the Office of Summer Sessions/CPCE and the Visual Arts department. The design project gives students real-world experience by providing specific guidelines while developing a creative, eye-catching design solution. The students must also give a presentation on their design for a panel of CPCE staff

and fellow design students. The winning design is voted on by CPCE staff, student interns, and visitors. The student with the chosen design then works with CPCE’s Publications Specialist to get their design ‘press-ready,’ meet with the printer to see their cover being printed, and do a press-check. They will then have a professionally printed piece for their portfolio.

The 2014 Summer Sessions winning cover was designed by Jonel Imutan. Read more about her below.

Summer Sessions Catalog Cover Showcases Talent of Pacific Students

Meet Jonel Imutan — 2014 Summer Sessions Catalog Cover Design WinnerJonel Imutan, a native Stocktonian, is one very busy, talented woman. A 2013 Pacific graduate with a dual major in Art and Psychology, she is an artist, community muralist/organizer, and entrepreneur.

For the past two years she has been a project leader for the Stockton Aesthetic Initiative (SAI), a local organization supported by the Stockton Arts Commission aimed to unite young local artists

and showcase their work while raising money for local charities and awareness for local issues. Though SAI as an organization has ended, they have been working on a magazine featuring artwork from Stockton artists to inspire creativity while challenging adversity and bringing awareness to the challenges in our community.

Imutan has co-organized several exhibitions and donated the funds to charities and community causes (American Cancer Society and Reach Out and Read San Joaquin). She spearheaded several community mural projects (West Lane Bowl, Alder Launderland Coin-Op Laundry, and Heinz North America Seed Laboratory). Imutan is currently working with Oakland High School's VAAMP program to lead mural design.

She co-founded Soul Blessed Lifestyle and Co., an apparel line that aims to use clothing as a means of self expression and the promotion of happiness, as well as a means of connecting with the community living a positive life. She does web design and the designs for the apparel.

She is also co-founder of J&M Printing and Stuff, which she started up with fellow Pacifican, Joey Ngo. It is a local business that provides apparel printing services to organizations, businesses, clubs, etc.

Imutan’s fun summer design for the 2014 Summer Sessions catalog cover was chosen from over 20 designs submitted by the 2012 Fall Illustration class taught by Michael Leonard. Watch for it in early March!

The ceremony was held at the Janet Leigh Theater on the Pacific campus with a reception following in the President’s Room. Eighteen graduates, along with family, friends, staff, and faculty members, were present for the event and basked in the celebration of their achievements.

CPCE partners with Hinrich Foundation to promote International TradeCPCE is currently partnering with the Hinrich Foundation in hopes of fostering global business initiatives through education in our International Trade Certificate Program. The Hinrich Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Asia whose mission is promoting sustainable global trade. This charitable enterprise aims to encourage the private sector and governments to drive innovation and competitiveness in trade-related activities by focusing on three programmatic areas: trade related education and training, export led job creation, and international trade policy research.

CPCE currently offers an online International Trade Certificate through a partnership with Mindedge, a provider of online education based in Massachusetts. Hinrich approached CPCE to see if our certificate program would be beneficial curriculum to aid Asian businesses in promoting global business education. There are currently 13 students piloting the International Trade Certificate. Hopefully, the pilot will foster increased enrollments and promote an expanded CPCE presence in the Asian market. The students in the pilot program hail from all over Asia including China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Nepal.

Chinese Educators Visit PacificIn early July, CPCE and the Gladys L. Benerd School of Education welcomed a delegation of 30 early childhood educators from China for a two week training program. Participants took part in workshops led by Stockton area early childhood education experts covering topics such as: Higher Administration in Preschools, Teachers in Preschools, Professional Development for Preschool Teachers, and The Role of Parents in Preschools. Site visits were coordinated allowing the visitors to observe local preschools and immerse themselves in American culture by having dinner with local families and attending a Stockton Ports baseball game.

The training was a success with an open discussion comparing the differences and similarities between the education systems in place in United States and China. All parties took away a new appreciation for the difficult work that early childhood educators are asked to do no matter the location.

OLLI@Pacific Moves to New OfficeIn May, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institutemoved up to the 3rd floor, Suite 332, in the Professional Development Center on March Lane. OLLI@Pacific now has its own reception desk and is conveniently located next to a new training room (330), with state of the art technology.

It’s a great addition to the three training rooms on the second floor. The new training room provides OLLI with the flexibility to accommodate courses in different configurations for 30 to 40 people. This past summer OLLI members enjoyed book discussions, iPad and iPhone classes, a six-word essay course, an information session on the ACE train, and cultural diversity courses in the room. The training room is also available for rent.

Greetings! My name is Dave Hamlett and I am the Associate Director at the Center for Professional and Continuing Education (CPCE) at the University of the Pacific. This is my second stint with the University as I was Director of Transfer Admissions from 1990 to 1997. I returned to the University in May 2010 after serving as the Executive Director of the California State University, Stanislaus – Stockton Center for 9 years. It is nice to be back at Pacific and again work with many of my longtime friends and colleagues.

My role at CPCE is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the unit and coordinate the Organizational Behavior Evening Degree Program. You may have seen some of our street billboards as you cruise around town. I am also the “administrator on duty” during the evenings and weekends when we have classes at our 1776 West March Lane site. I wear many different hats for the unit and enjoy the work very much.

For those of you that have worked with me in the past or have had the opportunity to visit my office, you will know that I am a HUGE baseball fan. I love the Dodgers and try to make a yearly pilgrimage to Chavez Ravine to watch my Boys in Blue. I have also coached baseball from t-ball all the way up to college level players. In 2008 and 2009 I coached Brookside Christian High School to two San Joaquin County Section Title Games. It was a wonderful experience working with young student-athletes.

On a personal level, my wife, Kimberly, and I have three beautiful children. David is a Division 1 baseball player at Coppin State University in Baltimore, Maryland. Alicia is a freshman at Pacific and loves the fact that my office is located off-site so I can’t spy on her. Our youngest child, Laila, is 11 years old and in the 6th grade at Ben Holt College Preparatory Academy. She also plays competitive soccer for SYSA’s Stockton Storm U12 team. We are so very proud of all our children.

If you have not had an opportunity to visit our office at 1776 West March Lane, please stop by and check us out. We have a lot of exciting things happening over here! Go Tigers!
