DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I was at a friend’shouse when I read your column about the “potty-mouth dog” (a dog that liked to eat his own andother animals’ droppings). My dog “Sandy” usedto have this disgusting habit too, but I cured herof it. I placed a piece of pineapple in the drop-pings. (I used canned, chunk pineapple and cut itinto even smaller pieces.) I don’t know why thisworked, but it did. After a few days of eating pine-apple-laced poo, Sandy wanted nothing more todo with droppings. Hope this tip helps, and happy

“clean mouth” to that dog! — Bill O., Sullivan,Ill.

DEAR BILL: That’s definitely a new methodto try. I would exercise caution in using common“human-safe” foods as a deterrent to copraphagia(stool-eating). While pineapple is not on the listof foods that are dangerous to dogs, it is a citrusfruit high in sugar, which might upset their stom-achs. So, as illustrated above, cut the pineappleinto very small pieces and use sparingly.

Other techniques thatare effective in stoppingthis annoying habit in-clude sprinkling the stoolwith hot pepper sauce orspraying with a commer-cial solution designed tomake the stool taste ter-rible to the dog.

Training the dog to“go” in a designated area,in addition to standardobedience training, is an-other method to deterstool eating. Picking upwaste immediately afterthe dog “goes” is anothersolution. But it’s likelythat most dog owners willneed to use a combinationof techniques to limit orstop the habit.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTHBy Paul G. Donohue, M.D.

Are Sleeping Pills WorseThan Insomnia?

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am on Lunesta, a prescriptionsleeping pill for insomnia. The nurse practitioner wantedme to take half a pill every third night, but that didn’twork for me. I have to take half a pill every night. Nowshe wants me to take half a pill every other nightbecause she’s afraid that it will become habit-forming.What do you think of this medicine? — S.S.

ANSWER: All sleeping pills should be taken for as shorta time as possible. “As short a time as possible” impliesthat the person recovers from whatever it is that’spreventing him or her from falling asleep. In the realworld, a correctible cause for insomnia often isn’t found, and then a person is faced with having to stay on asleeping pill or stay awake for most of the night. I wouldchoose option one, as long as the sleeping pill isn’tcausing any trouble, like daytime sleepiness. From timeto time, it’s in your interest to try and stop the pill. Youmight find that sleep isn’t as elusive as it was when youstarted taking it.

Lunesta is one of the newer sleeping pills, toleratedwell by most. It starts to work in 10 minutes, so it’s usefulfor those who find falling asleep difficult, and it hasextended action to prevent waking in the very-early-morning hours.

Lunesta has caused some users to behave differently.A normally reserved person might become quiteaggressive. It also has caused a very few to do thingsthey have no recollection of doing. A very small numberof people have driven a car under the influence of

Lunesta and have not realized that they did it. If a personhas such experiences, then immediately stopping thepill is common sense.

Have you tried nondrug approaches to fallingasleep? Go to bed and wake up at approximately thesame time every day. Relax before bedtime. If you don’tfall asleep within 20 minutes of lying down, get up andread or listen to music. Keep daytime naps to 20 minutesor less. Don’t use caffeine within six hours of bedtime.

You can become dependent on Lunesta, as you canon most sleeping pills. Dependence means it’s hard tostop the medicine. Gradually tapering the dose canusually allow people to break any dependence. Ibelieve that sleeplessness is worse than the prospect ofdependence.

Fibromyalgia is a common cause of insomnia. Thebooklet on this ailment explains it and its treatment. Toorder a copy, write: Dr. Donohue — No. 305W, Box536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check ormoney order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada withthe recipient’s printed name and address. Please allowfour weeks for delivery.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters,

but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readersmay write him or request an order form of available health newslettersat P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Introduce your family to a 2,000-year-old craftknown as “batik.” Originally practiced in Centraland Southeast Asia as well as Japan and Africa, itis an art tradition that continues in popularity, par-ticularly on the island of Java in Indonesia. Batikdesigns are commonly seen on clothing, tableclothsand wall hangings in vibrant colors. Applying hotwax to the fabric in places that are not to be dyedcreates designs. Here’s a way to get the “look”without the hot wax. All you need is to whip up asimple mixture of flour and water. Even thepreschoolers in yourhousehold can expe-rience this ancient artto create eye-catchingtable runners or wallhangings.

Simply mix to-gether 1/2 cup all-purpose white flourwith 1/2 cup water.Stir until smooth.Pour into a cleanplastic squeeze bottlewith a nozzle, like anempty honey-bearcontainer.

Squeeze out themixture onto white orplain-colored fabric, making designs, pat-terns or shapes.Leave undisturbedovernight. When dry, brush nontoxic fabricpaint over the de-signs, making sureyou paint between thehardened doughlines. Use a variety ofcontrasting colors, ifyou wish.

If painting a T-shirt, be sure it’s pre-washed. Place a sheetof cardboard betweenlayers so that the mix-ture and paint do notsoak through.

When the paint isdry, pick off the hard-ened flour mixturewith your fingernailsor a table knife to re-veal your hiddenmasterpiece. If someof the flour mixture isdifficult to remove bypicking, run the fab-ric under warm waterand continue to pickit off.

Heat-set thepaint with an ironaccording to in-structions on thebottle. If you aremaking a tablerunner or wallhanging, carefullyroll it up with tis-

sue paper and tie loosely with a ribbon. Attach aholiday gift tag with the name of the person re-ceiving the gift on one side and “Handmade by”and the name of your child printed on the otherside.

cycles from Fort Worth to Phoenix. They took all two-lane roads. Theybided their time with strolls through exotic locales like Marfa, Terlinguaand the Big Bend National Park. They picked upa few more stories to tell. In Kyle’s case, theremay be a new song or two to write. He’s a finesongwriter.
