Peter Atkins
Palgrave residents will have been sad to learn of the death of Peter Atkins, who moved to Roydon with Jackie only recently, after many years as a very active member of the community and Vice-Chairman of the Community Coun-cil.
Having built the family's own home in Lows Lane, Peter was able, not long af-ter, to bring practical and organisational skills to the creation of the new Com-munity Centre and was the driving force behind completion of the permanent venue for village activities that we enjoy today.
From the summer of 1984, most Saturday mornings would find Peter in charge of the team of unskilled but keen village self-builders (often joined by the Atkins children), come snow, rain or shine. Continuing, afterwards, to give his time to the PDCC executive committee and later on the Parish Council, Peter served as Chairman of the Parish Council from 1989 until 1993
We will all wish to express our condolences to Jackie, Simon and Katie..

The Great War Commemoration I have been very proud recently to be the Chairman of the Palgrave and District Com-munity Council, seeing this organisation work at its very best in providing for Palgrave the opportunity to commemorate the First World War in a thoroughly appropriate man-ner. I think our commemoration has struck exactly the right note: we have had fun, just as the people of Palgrave did all those years ago; we have been educated about the War; and we have remembered with great respect the ninety or so men who went to war, and, of course, the fifteen men who never came back.. We began with a concert, which was both witty and moving. Then we heard Professor Thomas Otte from the University give a fascinating talk about the origins of the Great War; and the events will conclude with a short season of films about the War. The heart of the commemoration, however, has been the exhibition, which ran for four days. Our organisers are very grateful to the villagers who loaned us precious articles and photographs from those days, which were used to present a vivid picture of life in the trenches, and life at home. The exhibition covered a great deal of ground, and I think everyone who saw it was enthralled. It was especially pleasing that all the pupils from Palgrave Primary School visited the exhibition—it speaks highly of their teachers that they saw the need to put their chil-dren in touch with what went on in those sometimes dreadful days. The whole of Palgrave should be grateful to Geoff Hinchliffe and his team of helpers for their vision in conceiving of this commemoration and for their hard work in making it real
The Conversation Cafe Gill Heriz has asked me to thank all of you who attended the Conversation Café in Oc-tober..
Working on behalf of the PDCC Committee, Gill was trying to ascertain the needs of the village as we try to shape the future of the PDCC and the Community Centre itself. Your answers and suggestions have given us a great deal of food for thought.. Some of your recommendations have already been implemented; and we will take them all into account when we decide what the PDCC should look like in the future. I am very grateful to Gill and her team of helpers for their ideas and hard work. Alan R Spoors Chairman

Parish Council Report - November 2014
The next parish council meeting will be held on 11th December. If you have any views about the work of your council or any other relevant matters then please contact our chairman Mike Bootman, at 2 Blands Farm Close IP22 1TD, [email protected] or 01397 640211.
Roads and Traffic - County Highways advise that we should shortly be informed whether the sites of the ’30 SLOW’ signs we requested are to be approved. A photographic survey has been submitted to Highways and the ‘Lorrywatch’ scheme manager show-ing the inconsistencies and apparent deficiencies in signing the existing 7.5T weight restriction across The Green and Denmark Hill. A similar survey will support the case for implementing the 7.5T weight restriction on HGVs for Crossing Road. Training for the ‘Lorrywatch’ volunteers is to take place soon but there is still time for new volunteers to put themselves forward to the Chairman.
The Lows - County Highways also advise us that the wooden bollards should finally be installed in the week commencing 1st December, when any surplus materials still remaining should also be re-moved from site, and also apologises for the delay in completing the work.
Churchyard and Cemetery - the churchyard clearance is now finished for the time being while the Parochial Church Council has arranged for replacement gates to the main entrance. The hedge at the cemetery extension will shortly be planted, but the cemetery gates are now in need of repair. The ‘Bus Shelter - is in a sorry state of repair, vandalised and used by fly-posters. The council has set aside a significant sum for repairs to it and also to treat or replace the post supporting the village sign. A noticeboard is to be sited in the ‘bus shelter above the seat for genuine community notices.
The Parish Council and the PDCC - the parish council has renewed its membership for a fur-ther year and appointed vice-chairman Val Pudney to be its representative. The parish council’s chairman and vice-chairman attended the PDCC’s AGM, being welcomed by its chairman Alan Spoors. Afterwards both organisations agreed in principle to work together on a number of projects in the community and Alan Spoors invited councillors to an informal discussion with the Community Coun-cil.
Parish Council Vacancies - whilst two well-known members of our community have asked to be considered for co-option at our next meeting the council still has several vacancies to fill. If you are interested first come along to a couple of meetings to gain an insight into how we work, while you are also welcome to approach the Chairman or any councillor for information. Interest from younger members of the community, able to provide their views on issues relevant to them, will be welcome. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 11th December at 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Members of the public are always welcome to attend and reminded that 15 minutes are set aside for any questions. The agenda is displayed 1 week in advance on the Council’s notice boards by Forge Close, in the Community Centre and on the Palgrave website: http://www.palgrave.onesuffolk.net/ along with other useful information. The council is in the process of appointing a new Clerk so until then please contact the Chairman.
Seasonal Greetings - are extended to all residents of Palgrave and the parish from the Parish Council.

PALGRAVE WALKING GROUP Our group, which now regularly attracts between 20 and 30 walkers, meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month leaving Palgrave Community Centre at 9.45 a.m. Everyone is wel-come to join our friendly group but it is regretted that dogs cannot be allowed on our walks. Addi-tionally Palgrave Walking Group, or its walk leaders, cannot be held liable for any injury sus-tained whilst on any walk they organise. Please contact Brian Beecroft on 01379 642208 or Sam and Eileen Turner on 01379 643160 if you would like further details. December 2014 Walks Tuesday 9
th December
Sam and Eileen will lead a walk from the car park opposite the Black Swan (Mucky Duck) at Homersfield. We will cross the A143 and head up the hill towards Alburgh. The walk is a little un-der five miles, there is one steep section near the start, no stiles (that can be recollected). There will be some muddy areas to cross. We will return to the start and take refreshment at the Black Swan. We have done this walk before but it is a while ago. If you wish to join us on these walks (or any future walks) please be at Palgrave Commu-nity Centre car park ready to leave for the starting point at 9.45 a.m. Future Walks Following are future walking dates with the names of the volunteers who have agreed to lead a walk. If you feel able to plan and lead a walk on the vacant dates please let us know so that we can add your name to the list. Details of the walk can be supplied at a later date although we do have a deadline for inclusion in the Palgrave Star of approximately the 17
th of the previous

Palgrave CEVC Primary School MP Dr Dan Inspires Primary School Pupils Local MP and minister in the Department of Health, Dr Dan Poulter, dropped into Pal-grave Primary School recently for a question and answer session with the pupils from years 3 to 6, who involved themselves enthusiastically in the session. Questions ranged from the work of an MP, to the role of government ministers, and whether he enjoyed his job. Pupils subsequently wrote about the meeting. Grace Philpot from year 3 wrote: ‘Dr Dan discussed all about his job and I really en-joyed listening to him. He gave us very interesting explanations for all the questions we asked. Dr Dan inspired me to be an MP’. Charlie Cook from year 5 wrote: ‘Dr Dan came into our school to talk about the fascinating job of an MP. He said he wanted to be an MP to make a difference in the world. I really enjoyed his visit and it was a shame it was only half an hour. I hope he comes again for another wonderful visit’. Headteacher Andrew Berry was very pleased that Dr Poulter had offered to visit the school. ‘At a time when there is a lot of disenchantment with politicians’ he said ‘it is very encouraging that a busy minister is prepared to spend some time to inspire the younger generation by explaining what work he does and why he came into politics’.
SEE and be SEEN! One wet Wednesday recently at around 5 p.m. an adult male was noted walking down Denmark Hill - it was dark, headlights and windscreen wipers were on, he was wear-ing dark clothing and a black backpack and was on the side of the road with his back to oncoming traffic. We know that several of our roads demand that care and attention be paid by road users and pedestrians in the best of conditions. The Highway Code recommends pedestrians wear something making them clearly visible and to walk facing oncoming traffic - so please BE SAFE - and drivers please BEWARE

On Monday 3rd November, Angie Jones gave an excellent talk on Composting/Winter Gardening. The Composting part of the talk began with how to start off of a Compost Bin, what to put in it and what not, how to get it working and what advan-tages the end product has for your garden. The second part was what can be done at this time of year in the garden, giving handy tips and Angie answered lots of questions during the talk. Finally we were treated to colourful cuttings of unusual shrubs and plants which she had brought with her, showing how good they can look in the garden in Late Autumn/Winter. This talk was enjoyed by all the club’s members.
Our December meeting on the will be the Annual Xmas Coffee Morning/AGM with Mince Pies, Nibbles, and Mulled Wine. Tip of the Month Prepared bulbs can now be brought indoors to be forced for Christmas. Place in a cool light place.

Recipe of the Month Baked Sausages & Squash This is a simple Wmter recipe, that can if necessary be prepared several hours in advance. For four people you will need eight sausages, two red onions peeled and quartered, salt, pepper, fresh thyme and rosemary and olive oil. Prepare 1 kilo of Butternut Squash, cut it in half, discarding the seeds, peel it and cut into bite size pieces. Tip all the ingredients in to a bowl turning them so they are lightly covered in the oil. Tip onto a large baking sheet covered with grease-proof paper. Bake on Gas Reg 6/200c for 1 hour until the sausages are brown and the onions and squash tender. Meanwhile make a tomato sauce by sweating a chopped shallot or small onion in oil until tender and then adding a can of chopped tomato’s. Allow to bubble for 10 minutess then taste and season carefully for as well as salt and pepper you well need some brown sugar and a splash of wine vinegar. When the squash mixture is ready, divide into four portions onto warm plates and top with the quickly reheated tomato sauce. This should be served with chunks of wholemeal bread.
Thought and quote for the Month 1. Be loyal to the garden you love, be true to the earth with only good things, fight the garden enemies with passion and laughter and you will reep the rewards Edward Abbey 2. Be pleasant until ten o’clock in the morning and the rest of the day will take care of itself- Elbert Hubbard
Anyone interested in the above or in membership of the group please con-tact Sheila True on 01379 643393

It is now 100 years since the start of the 1st World War, and many of us will have parents, grandparents, friends and other family members who have made the brave decision to serve in our armed forces. In Suffolk, we are immensely proud of our own Royal Anglian Regiment, and over the past 100 years or so, great bravery and sacrifice has been shown by the service men and women of Suffolk. Just as our brave service men and women have put their lives on the line in the service of our country, we owe them and their families a duty of care and support for the rest of their lives. For those who have been physically or mentally injured during their time of service, we are duty-bound to honour their dedication and commitment by ensuring that they con-tinue to receive the very best possible healthcare from our NHS when they return to civil-ian life. In my role as Government Veterans Health Minister, I have worked hard to ensure that veterans and their families receive the care and support they deserve, and am pleased to have directed over £22 million of funding to improve both the physical and mental health-care of veterans. As a result, there are now 9 new veterans’ specialist prosthetic centres, making it possible for all armed services veterans who have lost limbs to have access to the highest quality prosthetic services and care. Veterans in Suffolk who have lost limbs are now receiving first rate prosthetic services at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. But improving healthcare services for armed forces veterans is not just about improving physical health; a condition such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may not be as visible as an amputation, but it can cause just as much distress. Our brave ex-servicemen and women are now being served by more mental health professionals than ever before, with 10 new specialist veterans mental health teams firmly established across England. The Government has also funded access for veterans and Armed Forces families to a 24 hour veteran’s mental health hotline, and the charity Combat Stress is being supported to provide acute PTSD services and care for our veterans. Getting the transition between military and civilian life right is so very important, and to make sure we properly support newly discharged soldiers, we have established the Veter-ans’ Information Service, which contacts veterans a year after they have left the Armed Forces and tells them where to go to get help and support should they need it. GPs also play an important role as they are in the right place to identify the special health needs of our Armed Forces community, and very soon there will be a specialist GP in every local healthcare area including Suffolk who understands the physical and mental health needs of our brave veterans. If you know an armed forces veteran or their family that need additional care and support please get in touch with me or your local MP and we shall do all we can to help. Rosedale Remembers at Christmas
Christmas can be a very difficult time for the recently bereaved who cannot avoid the reminders that "tis the sea-son to be jolly" season is upon us. Someone to talk to and support you during one of the most difficult times in your lives is how the funeral direc-tors at Rosedale funeral home see themselves, offering a caring, per-sonal as well as a very professional service to those who find themselves without their loved one this Christ-mas. For anyone facing their first Christ-mas without a loved one, Rosedale have available a small booklet enti-tled “A not so jolly Christmas” offering practical advice on reducing pres-sure, re-evaluating traditions, re-defining expectations and re-living the memories. There is even a spe-
cial section for helping children with their loss at Christmas. The booklet is avail-able free of charge from any Rosedale Funeral Home. Every December, Rosedale has traditionally placed a memorial Christmas tree in St Marys Church, Diss and we are delighted that Diss library have agreed to host a tree again this year. These trees are a focal point for bereaved families at a time when their loss may be most acute. Rosedale provides attractive cards for families and friends to write a message for their loved ones, no matter how long ago, or where they died. Each card is carefully hung on one of their Christmas trees, a simple but thoughtful gesture. If you would like to receive a complimentary card or would like to know where your nearest Christmas tree is please telephone the fu-neral home nearest to you. This year we will also be offering families the opportu-nity to take away with them a memory candle that we hope you will light on Christ-mas day in memory of your loved one. This year, Rosedale will be hosting a Ser-vice of Remembrance at the Public Hall in Beccles for anyone who will be without a loved one this Christmas. The service will be held on Sunday 14th December at 2.30pm. There will be a Book of Remembrance at the Service and a Memorial Tree where you may place a card or write a personal message. There will be no charge for attending the service.
