PALGRAVE VILLAGE MARKET & COFFEE MORNING With Car Boot from noon
Saturday 26th May 10.00am- 2.00pm June will see the fourth Palgrave Village Market on Saturday 30th June 10 – 2. Some of our regular traders will be there – they like us – and there will be others as well. In May we introduced the extra element of a Car Boot Sale for the same day (£5 each, pay on the day and arrive at 11.30am) Lots of people visit us on these days – if YOU haven’t yet visited one of our Palgrave Village Markets – why not? As well as beautiful craft items (pottery, needlework, photography, garden furniture etc ) we can show you marmalades, jams, chutneys and also lovely fresh vegetables and fruit etc from Stuston Farm Shop right here in Palgrave Community Centre. Indeed, if you live in Palgrave, the Community Centre is right on your doorstep and this is an event well worth visiting. Why not arrange to meet friends there and enjoy time spent in our ‘coffee shop’.
PALGRAVE GARAGE SALES (May) This event is obviously history now but deserves a mention in this edition of the Star. Over twenty residents in Palgrave opened their garages to sell things surplus to their requirements. It was a sunny May day and visitors flocked to the village from well before the start time of 9 a.m. and that continued for several hours. People visiting the Community Centre for refreshments were relating tales of the bargains they had found while the organizers had to send out for more edible supplies. Most visitors seemed to come from other villages round and about and we heard comments admiring and praising Palgrave village and our Community Centre. Thank you to all who took part and to Helen in particular for organizing the event. Anyone who had items left over – please think about having a car boot at the Community Centre in June or July – only £5 a pitch.

Palgrave Summer Fete- Sunday 22nd July
Do you remember the Village Fete last year when the Suffolk Kite Flyers attended? Despite their valiant efforts, there was disappointingly not enough wind for showing off the kites that day. However, the kite workshop for children indoors was good and popular. Well – we have invited the kite flyers back for Sunday 22nd July when, although we want a sunny warm day, we hope there will be enough wind high up to keep those marvellous modern kites in the air – and children can have fun making kites for themselves. We will also have music for all tastes from De Ja Vue; refreshments of all sorts and games and competitions which are always popular. In order to run these games we do need prizes and this is where YOU come in. There will be a collection around the village from 10th July. Please please find something for us which could be used as a prize for a game, for the tombola or for the raffle. If you miss the collectors or are not actually resident in the village we suggest you contact the person who delivers your Star (he or she must live near you and would be able to collect). Also if you would like to take a turn in running a game or helping by donating/making cakes etc please contact any of our committee (you will find phone numbers elsewhere in the Star). And then come to the Community Centre on Sunday 22nd July – and have fun!

Monday 4th June Community Centre
on’t forget to join us for the celebrations at the Community Centre on Monday 4th June. If there is something good on TV then set the dvd recorder or catch up on
i-player. There is only likely to be one Diamond Jubilee in most people’s life time. We are providing a selection of sandwiches; crisps; cakes; jellies and ice cream but we would welcome a small plate of something savoury (eg small sausage rolls, cheese straws, miniature quiches & pork pies etc). Tea and coffee will be provided also squash for the children. The Community Centre Bar will be open for the sale of other drinks. This is an outside event, good weather has been ordered but, it is often chilly on the field so please wear appropriate clothing. Seating is limited and it would be useful if you could bring a chair or picnic rug. There should be music and we hope you will support the Treasure Hunt, Children’s Fancy Dress, and Games. Prizes will be awarded. Come along, enjoy the afternoon the approximate timing of the events are as follows
• 13.30 Walking Treasure Hunt starting from the Community Centre
• 15.15 Children’s Fancy Dress Parade

Watch this space for further details on the date and our premier film Tickets will be available from either the Stuston Farm Shop or Helen Thorburn when finalised. BECKY’S TRIP TO KENYA In the summer of 2013, myself and approximately 17 other pupils from Hartismere High School Eye will be going out to Kenya for 4 weeks. The aim of the trip is to improve the living and educational standards out there. Whilst in the country we will be doing basic building work, working with some of the younger children and much more. In order to participate in this trip we have to raise the funds. The amount we have to raise is £4000. Previously I and others have had stalls at Palgrave Coffee Mornings and done some sponsored events. In the future as a group we are planning to do a car boot / car wash and other fundraising events at Hartismere School. We also all have individual events that we are planning to do.

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS
At the recent Annual Meetings reports were given on the past year's events within the village and local area. The Annual Reports are on the village website and are available by request to any Councillor. Thanks to those who attended and contributed to the sharing of information. Sian Bunbury continues as Chairman, with Ian Thorburn as Vice-Chairman. The Jubilee project to renovate the pond on The Green and place a bench is progressing and work to the vegetation and trees around the pond will be undertaken during the next few months. A leaflet showing circular walks in and around the village is being prepared, and plans to expand the cemetery car park are in hand. A liaison group has been set up to improve communication with the St John's House Hospital. Vacancies : Regrettably vacancies for two Councillors became available as Judy Ward and John Sparks resigned. They both contributed much to the work of the Parish Council and to improving the village environment and we are very grateful to them. We are also without a Clerk due to the resignation of Anne Coates. Her helpfulness and efficiency was much appreciated and has also been recognised beyond the Parish Council itself. If you would like more information or are interested in becoming a Councillor, or in the post of Clerk please speak to Sian Bunbury, Ian Thorburn or any of the Councillors: Eric Barlow, Bob Honnor, Jan Hicks, Ted Ling, Val Pudney, Marion Sneddon and Neil Weston. Contact details are displayed on the notice boards inside the Community Centre and near Forge Close. The next meeting will be held on 21st June at 7.30pm in the Community Centre. You are welcome to attend.

Additionally Palgrave Walking Group, or its walk leaders, cannot be held liable for any injury sustained whilst on any walk they organise. If you would like further details please contact Brian Beecroft. Telephone 01379 642208. June Walks Tuesday 12th June 2012 Dinah Manning and Betty Chenery will take us on a circular walk of around 4½ miles from Denmark Green, through Roydon Fen and on to Wortham Ling before returning to the starting point along the footpath beside the River Waveney. There are 4 stiles on the route and some potentially muddy stretches. After the walk we will go to the Cock Inn for drinks. Tuesday 26th June 2012 Brenda and Geoff Castell will lead us on a 5 mile circular walk around the villages of Wortham and Burgate. The route is flat and easy with no stiles and is mainly off-road. After the walk we will go to the Dolphin Public House at Wortham for refreshments. Palgrave Gardening and Social Group
Holiday Monday and the Star’s deadline is a little earlier, our visit to Sue Allison’s garden at Thorpe St Andrew on 14th May is yet to happen. 11th June is when we plan to visit Wyken Vineyard garden and The Bellflower Nursery Walled Garden nearby. We leave Palgrave Community Centre at 9.30 am to arrive at 10.00 am for an arranged visit to the garden followed by coffee at Wyken Vineyard Leaping Hare, costing £8.50. We will then move on to the Bellflower Nursery. Anyone interested in this or in joining the group please contact Sheila True 643393. Tip of the Month
If you are growing tomatoes, try this trick. Allow a tomato side-shoot to grow to about 5 inches. Sever it from the main stem and root it in water or compost – it will take about 10 days to grow roots. Pot it up and in due course pot it on. It will grow away rapidly and in no time will be showing flower trusses. Let four develop before “stopping” the plant and by mid-August you will have fruit ripening on your “free” plant. A small-fruited variety will work best.
JAL
Thought for the Month
Forget-Me-Not
The blossoms blue to the bank he threw Ere he sank in the eddying tide; And ‘Lady, I’m gone, thine own knight true, Forget-me-not, he cried. The farewell pledge the lady caught, And hence, as legends say, The flower is a sign to awaken thought Of friends who are far away.
Suffer them now, and they’ll o’errun the garden, And choke the herbs for want of husbandry.
Shakespeare

VILLAGE POND RESTORATION H.M. QUEEN DIAMOND JUBILEE
PGSG members have submitted all the necessary paperwork which includes contractors’ quotes, drawings, specifications and photographs to the Parish Council with whom we are working in partnership, for their action and approval, prior to submission to MSDC for their consent in order that the project can go ahead. The members have selected a 1.5metre bench in Iroko hardwood from Genesis of Ipswich part of the Mencap Orwell Trust enterprise, and an inscribed brass plaque, details of which are in the submitted paper work.It is hoped the bench can be sited on the Green adjacent to the pond and the entry to the Paddocks. It has and is an ongoing and interesting exercise with the usual highs and lows peppered with frustration from time to time caused by unfathomable and expected red tape. The generous funding from the Parish Council, together with the generous donation from a villager toward the bench and the fund raising from members of the PGSG is bringing us closer to our target. The saga of the Highways MSDC not giving us permission to pump out the pond water through the normal storm water drains down Lows Lane has set us back £400.00. After much searching we now have a quote from Septic Tank Services and we have located a bowser although unfortunately it has holes in it - not conducive for transporting the water on our roads to Mr. Ian McLintock’s field in Millway Lane. It is estimated that there is approximately 35.000 gallons of pond water to pump out. There was a thought that if every villager took a bowl and filled it up with pond water it would solve our problem! Perhaps not! Finally we are waiting to learn if Cllr Charles Michell is successful in his quest to help us meet the short fall in our budget from his locality budget. Hopefully the next update in the Star will be very positive with the outstanding issues finally addressed and the restoration of the pond will be underway. Sheila True (PGSG Chairman) STOP PRESS – We have been successful in obtaining funding from Charles Mitchell To every one who supported the Cake, Plant and Produce Stall at the May Garage Sales, a huge THANK YOU. We raised a fantastic £168.00

St Peter’s Repairs and Improvements Project
Urgent repairs are needed to the roof of St. Peter´s Church, at a cost of approx. ₤150,000 and we are therefore working hard to raise funds, in addition to making grant requests to various funding bodies. We very much welcome all the support and contributions that we have received so far, and hope for your continued support.
Recent fundraising events We are delighted to report that the Easter Art Exhibition raised ₤800 towards the cost of the repairs and improvements to the church. The Pudding Tasting Evening on 27th April was a very enjoyable and well-attended event, with an abundance of delicious homemade puddings, a foodie quiz to challenge us, and excellent musical entertainment provided by Rough at the Edges. Proceeds from this joint event were ₤227 each for St. Peter´s and for Palgrave Community Council. Future fundraising events
Safari Supper We are planning to organise a “safari supper” (when guests would have a starter, main course and dessert & coffee in different people’s homes). An opportunity to enjoy a leisurely dinner in different locations! Please contact Kathryn Westerveld as soon as possible ([email protected] or tel 644007) if you would like to be one of the hosts for this event, so that we can finalise the date and further details.
Palgrave Apple Juice Do you have one or more apple trees, and do you often have more apples than you are able to use? If so, please contact Kathryn Westerveld ([email protected] or 01379 644007), as we hope to have surplus apples from around the village pressed and bottled, so that we can sell Palgrave apple juice to raise funds.

Songs of Praise at St. Peter´s Church on Sunday 24th June
We shall be celebrating our Patronal Festival on Sunday 24th June at 11.00 am with a ‘Songs of Praise’ service. This will be followed by refreshments including ‘BUBBLY’, so put the date in your diaries and come along for the ‘BIG’ sing. Let’s raise the roof and all join in the fun and fellowship.
We shall be singing a selection of favourite hymns and if you would like to vote for a particular hymn, there are voting papers in the church for you to complete. The hymns with the greatest number of votes will be the ones we sing so make your vote, then come along to find out if your hymn is included and join in the singing and, of course, the refreshments.

We are all very proud of Suffolk’s rural heritage and our beautiful countryside, which is enjoyed by everyone. I recently spoke in a debate in Parliament about the Government’s changes to the planning system, and I am pleased that the Government’s new planning reforms help to protect the Suffolk countryside from inappropriate development. In reforming the planning system, the Government has listened to the concerns of people in Suffolk and elsewhere in rural Britain by committing to develop former industrial sites (or brownfield areas) and focus on town centre regeneration before building on the open countryside. This will also ensure that our valuable farming land in Suffolk is protected from overdevelopment.
What Suffolk needs is small scale development to provide local homes for local people, whilst we also need to develop housing for our growing number of older people, which means providing more adaptable and bungalow homes. I am in favour of increasing the supply of affordable housing for young people and families so that they can continue living and working locally, but it is crucial that development is always tied to local jobs, key road and rail infrastructure projects as well as new schools and improved local healthcare. This is what the Government means when it talks about sensitive, sustainable development, and it is what we must see in Suffolk if we are to maintain the distinctive character, customs and traditions that sustain our rural communities.
Having rapid ambulance response times are an issue of great importance for our rural areas in Suffolk, particularly given the large number of older people living locally. I was disappointed to uncover figures recently that show the East of England Ambulance Service Trust is still failing to meet national targets for responding to emergencies in rural towns and villages. It is not acceptable that residents in rural parts of Suffolk are continuing to receive a second-rate ambulance service, despite assurances from the Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Trust last year that improvements would be made. Our paramedics in Suffolk work extremely hard and do an excellent job providing life-saving treatment to people on a daily basis, which is why it is essential that they are properly supported by the management. I have another meeting with the Chief Executive of the Ambulance Trust in June, along with Norman Lamb, the MP for North Norfolk, where I shall be holding the management to account for their continued failure to improve response times in our rural communities.
I was recently delighted to show my support for the annual Suffolk Marmalade Festival, which was well-attended by local families and people of all ages, and a host of activities, including a display by the Eye Karate & Fitness Club Display Team, ensured that there was plenty to see for everyone. I am an active supporter of the East of England Air Ambulance

and much of the proceeds raised on the day will go towards to the Air Ambulance, which plays an invaluable role, particularly in our rural areas, in supporting the NHS in life threatening emergencies by air lifting people to hospital. I would like to extend my thanks to Rosemary Jones, who showed me around the festival, and very much look forward to attending again next year.
