great source of potential recruitment for the Barony, so your efforts are truly appreciated!

As a follow-up to this demo, we will once again be

holding Arts in the Park on the regular

brigade prac-tice date

following Comic-Con (Sunday, Au-gust 7th). We would

like to en-courage

absolutely everyone who is

able to attend this demo to do so. This is

a great opportunity to show off all of the amazing

things Calafia has to offer, so the more hands the better. Thank you very much to Mistress Ellyn for putting the event together this year, and to our Arts and Sciences team for all of the support for this event.

We’re looking forward to a great summer in the best Barony in the Known World. See you soon, Calafia!

Greetings, Calafia! The busy summer season is off to a great start!

While we don’t have any official events in the Barony this month, there is noshortage of other thingsgoing on!

We’re tryingout some-thing newwith ourPopulaceMeetingthis month –Becausethe regularMeetingdate falls overComic-Con, thepopulace decidedthat it would bebetter for us to resched-ule the meeting to a differentevening. So, since we won’t be able to access a room at Allied Gardens, we have decide to turn the meeting into a more social event, and make it a summer barbecue. We will still go over our monthly business at 7:00 PM, but there will be social time before and after the business portion. Dinner will be provided. Stay tuned for an announcement from our Seneschal with more details. If this turns out to be a fun event for everyone, we will look at possibly making it an annual tradition. As always, we’re looking for feedback from every-one, so let us know what you think!

Speaking of Comic-Con, our annual Iron Brigade demo at Comic-Con is just around the corner. Thank you to Duchess Kara and her team for once again putting this together, and thank you to all the volunteers who take time out of your schedules to be a part of the demo! This is a

“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled.”

-- Plutarch

Do you remember that moment in the SCAwhen you found your passion? Whether it was the first

time you picked up a sword or wrote your first poem or wove your first cord –everyone has that moment. Now is your chance to share that passion with the next generation of the SCA and provide the spark for their flame.

The SCA’s Youth and Family Achievement program (YAFA) is looking for mentors!

The mission for the YAFA program is to encourage active participation by families with chil-dren and teens in the study of a variety of medieval subjects and activities, sharing their experiences and accomplishments with others, and create ownership and investment in the Society. The goal is to have an energetic society of honorable and knowledgeable citizens developed from within. This program will guide and encourage young people and their families in seeking opportunities for involvement in the SCA.

The only way this program will be successful is through the support and involvement of mentors like you. By dedicating some of your time and sharing your knowledge and passion, you have an opportunity to pass along your knowledge and skills to the next generation of fighters, artisans and leaders of the SCA in a structured environment that will be recognized across the known world.

The YAFA program is now open to all members interested in being a mentor and signing up is easy! Go to yafa.sca.org, click “Mentor Application” at the top of the page and fill out the form. Your kingdom’s Youth Officer will then contact you with more details.

On August 31, 2015, this program will fully launch and be available for families to sign up. A follow up announcement will be made with the full details. In the meantime, for more infor-mation about the program, please click the “Resources” tab at the top of the YAFA website. Included are links to videos describing all aspects of the program and a FAQ page. Please feel free to contact your Kingdom Youth officer if you have any questions, comments or concerns.

16 June 2016Commentary and AnnouncementsCommentary from the Baron and Baroness:

We had a really big weekend in Gyldenholt last weekend as we watched Barons Giles and Giuseppe step down.

Thanks to all of you who put in so many hours before, during, and after Potrero this year!

Queen’s Champion Equestrian was a great turnout! Thank you to our Equestrian team for putting that event together!

While we are light in events next month, there are many nearby events that sound incredible. Please see the calendars for more details.

Commentary from the Seneschal (THL Seraphina Lilje):

We now have a “No Parking” sign for the Keep!

Announcements from Peers and Kingdom Officers:

THL Rekon and Duchess Eilidh will be the largesse coordinators for the incoming Majesties. If anyone would be willing to donate handmade goods, please contact them to arrange delivery.

Baronial Officers ReportsArts and Sciences (Lady Euginia in rauða):

Potrero War! Arts and Sciences had a new location, which was a lovely space. I hope we can continue to use it. It worked out that we had enough shade structures for our new tables. We had classes from Friday through Sunday. The new A&S Village area is a really great space for Arts, and if we get to continue to use it, we can host lots of activities there. We will, however, need more chairs to make it work. When I scheduled the classes, I had to schedule the bigger classes at the old stone tables to make sure there was adequate seating. Unfortunately, this split up the classes enough to make A&S look less attended than I would like. This year we also had two extra leads, besides myself and Lady Grainne, and that worked out very well. Grainne and I also made notes of things that needed to be done for next year. We had our Uffington Horse Interpretation Competition, and Jay Alexander was our winner.

A&S is pretty quiet until August, when we have our 3rd

quarterly A&S night, and then it’s Arts in the Park and Leodamus of Thebes Tourney.

Arts and Sciences (Lady Euginia, cont.)

We have two new deputies for Arts and Sciences: THL Margaret Kerne and Lady Adelwyn Attwatere!

Chatelaine (Lady Isolde de Fetherstan):

Chatelaine attended Potrero War and the Baronial Newcomers Meeting.

We have had 15+ emails from newcomers, lots of email contacts leading up to war.

Potrero War went well; thank you to everyone who helped get loaner garb out to the newbies and donated garb to Gold Key!

• Deputy of Baronial Household (Mistress FiaNaheed) – Baronial Household for June was on the 1st at Allied Gardens at 7:00 PM. There were nine in attendance. The topic was “Now that Potrero War is over, what else is there to do?” We had a good discussion on upcoming events and other activities available.

• Deputy for Demos (open position) - At the YMCA Mt Laguna Demo on June 11, we had 23 SCA participants, including nine fighters. The kids were asked to choose fighters to root for and it helped keep interest high. Word has spread quickly!

We have received our participant passes for the Comic Con demo.

Chronicler (THL Dagný Starkaðardóttir):

The Kingdom Chronicler has set a challenge for each Barony to provide a cover and clip art for one month’s issue of the Crown Prints. Please send art! – let’s set the bar high for this new by-the-month baronial challenge!

Chronicler’s Office is seeking a Deputy Chronicler with the goal of stepping up as Chronicler when the current Chronicler’s warrant expires in October. Interested parties should email [email protected].

Exchequer (Mistress Lasairiona ingheanGheibheannaigh):

For May, attended the Event Planning, PotreroWalkthrough, and War Meetings at Potrero and Allied Gardens. I also attended and worked at Potrero War.

Council Minutes, cont.• Deputy for Youth Combat (THL Arianne Lightheart

of Whiteheld) – There was Youth Combat at PotreroWar: at the Friday Torchlight Tourney – 18; Saturday melees – 42; Sunday melees – 29. One parent mentioned to an MIT that they thought the sharing of helmets could cause lice transmission and asked how we disinfect equipment.

Youth Combat was assisted at Potrero by TairdelbachClannach (reauthorizing as Youth Combat Marshal), Arthur the Red (warranted Marshal), and new MITs Anna Moren, Josselyn Souza, and edith Souza. Also assisted by parent Jonathan Whiteheart and youth MIT Gabryel Bader.

We held one practice, with one waiver collected. Five waivers were collected per tourney.

• Deputy for Rapier (Master Michael Mallory) – No report.

• Deputy for Thrown Weapons (Lord Mikhail Liutognev) – Attended Potrero War; there were 20 or so fighters. We had some people use the range and act as Marshal while the official Marshal was not present. The Constables were notified of the incident and asked to keep tabs on the range for the remainder of the event.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the range was only officially able to be opened for Friday, but it was well received while it was opened, and the majority of the attendees were new throwers who had very little or no prior throwing experience.

• Deputy for Unarmored Combat (Don Avenel Kellough) – No report.

Media Liaison (Lord Andrew Farefax):

At Potrero War, I spent most of my war escorting the Media around to different events. They appear to have finished the event with an overwhelmingly positive opinion of the SCA and Potrero War. I am supposed to continue working with them for final approval on their edits, and they have promised to give me both the vignettes they create and all the raw footage for our use. We might create a web commercial from this should we so desire.

Social Media (Lord Christoffer Dechsel):

Had a busy month leading up to Potrero.

Exchequer ((Mistress Lasairiona, cont.):

I coordinated with Pre-Reg and Gate Stewards for Potrero War 2016 to receive and deposit registration fees. I also coordinated with the Constable to secure and return high value items from Potrero War Lost & Found.

Current projects: development of updated Tourney and Gate Procedures for recording and money handling; updating of Guild Charter wording with regard to designated funds held by the Barony.

• Deputy for Assets (Lady Sárán mac Duinn) –Nothing to report.

• Baronial Keep (THL Michael Treighie) - Please keep an eye out for the Keep clean-up date! We need as many hands as we can get. There will be snacks.

Herald (Lady Ariana verch Gwenllian):

Attended Potrero War, Queen’s Champion Equestrian.

Granted in Roving Court on 5/28: Johana Flotian – Golden Trident; Tobias of Calafia – Golden Trident; Balo Baloo Romani – Golden Trident; AtellusPatercullus – Golden Trident. Granted at Grand Court on 5/29: Astor of the Crimson Brotherhood – Golden Trident; Ester O’Hearn – Golden Trident; Raven Schneckenberg – Golden Trident.

• Deputy for Archery (Lord Christoffer Dechsel) –Practice goes on as usual. No problems to report. At Potrero: 196 people signed up at the Archery Range over the course of the weekend, only 33 of whom were already authorized archers. The Baronial archery fund provided the bulk of the prizes, with generous donations from Yoho’s Leather, THL Gemma Borgia, THL Suzanne Delaphine, and Baron John of Sudwelle.

• Deputy for Equestrian (THL Niall Marescal) – No report.

Council Minutes, cont.Webwright (THL Curteis FitzOsbern de Abergavenny):

In the past month, conducted iVolunteer report training for the Potrero Volunteer Steward and assisted her in managing the Setup Crew process in iVolunteer; also, completed Potrero website and database systems operations.

Upcoming projects: update of Baronial Website content and layout; cloud services for Calafia/Potrerousing either Google Apps or Office 365; email address housecleaning; determining options for long-term hosted email service.

The Linode Email server that was approved by Council for Potrero use is also being used to handle the automated Baronial emails (i.e., the notices for and responses from the monthly officer reports). The current approved funding will expire in July.

MOTION to approve new funding. The Linode system accommodates a max of six months advance funding ($60), which would carry the system to 2017 and the beginning of the next Potrero prep period. Kingdom doesn’t have an alternative at this time, so I am requesting Council to fund $60 for the next half-year. During this time I will work with the Kingdom Webwright on a permanent solution.

Motion carried to approve a year’s worth of funding for our Linode server ($120), to be paid in two $60 increments.

Practices have been popular. We will be starting monthly mini-tourneys to provide a proper training atmosphere.

A&S has been having a lot of fun. July 7th we will be at the Vista library for a craft night – no clay, no paint, no glitter. We would like to have a period banner making class, as well as a cordial making class.

Council Minutes, cont.Costumer’s Guild (Lady Brighid ni Muirenn):

No event was held in May due to Potrero War.

On June 13 Mistress Ellyn of Tanwayour will finish her Gothic Fitted Gown class. Bring your bodice and sleeve patterns plus approximately five yards of inexpensive non-stretch fabric and a sewing machine if you have one. We will be cutting out the dress panels from the bodice panels we made in March, front and back side gores for widening the skirts, and the sleeves from the sleeve patterns we drafted in April. We’ll go through basting and fitting both the bodice and the sleeves as time permits.

Equestrian Guild (Duchess Kara the Twin of Kelton):

No practice in May due to Queens Champion Equestrian. Our next scheduled practice date is July 31.

We have made $500 to date on T-shirt sales!

European Dance (THL Maluchka Korotkova):

The Dance Guild met in the Cerro Room on Monday, May 16. There were two in attendance, including the teacher. We went over two dances commonly done at SCA balls that can still be done with two people: Amoroso and Korobushka. Since nobody else showed up, we retired early to the Thai fast food place near the brew pub.

There will be practice/meeting on Monday, June 20 at 7:00 PM at Allied Gardens in the Cerro Room. We plan to continue work on Gracca Amorosa and other dances, depending on who and how many show up.

Hearth and Cauldron: (Lady Ysabeau Boucher):

Nothing to report.

Iron Brigade (Sir Valrik Maclan):

Brigade practice was held on June 5th.

Metal Workers Guild (THL Sabyna of Aydon):

Shop Night is held every Thursday with an average of two to five people in attendance.

We held a meeting on June 10 to discuss an upcoming Guild project to create tokens for Fall Crown 2016. There were six members in attendance.

Our safety gloves have been infested with earwigs, making them unfit for human use!

We will be participating in Arts in the Park in August; Sabyna will be in charge of herding the cats. We also plan on holding a quarterly meeting in July.

Metal Workers Guild (THL Sabyna, cont.):

We would like to engage the artists of the Barony to help us design artwork for the Crown Tokens. More information will be posted, but we are looking for a piece of artwork that can be scaled down to ~1 square inch that embodies the heart and soul of Caid. The image will then be cast into a bronze stamp to be used to create the token.

Middle Eastern Guild (THL Giovanna Ricci):

We were dark for May and unfortunately will be dark for June while I recover from a cold.

Our April meeting was part two of our Gomlek making class. We had eight people in attendance and much sewing was done!

We may have a meeting in July if we can schedule it around the fourth weekend and SDCC. If not, we will have a garb discussion session in August.

Musicians Guild (Master Samuel Piper):

No report.

Nautical Guild (Lord Curteis FitzOsbern):

The Flagship Competition and Commission Ceremony was held at Potrero War, along with a Salvage Token Auction and Guild Meet-and-Greet. We have scheduled Guild meetups at two Maritime Museum events: the Sea Chantey Festival in August and the Festival of Sail in September.

For our June meeting, we are having an unfinished projects workshop. This should, hopefully, give folks a chance to work on a past project that they have gotten stuck on, bring in a project they have been meaning to get back to, or revisit the skills to make a project. It will be a casual night.

In July, we are planning a Possaments class to be taught by Mistress Aldgytha of Ashwood.
