From the Baron & Baroness

P A G E 3

Witam, Calafia! We hope this missive finds you rested after war. We will start this month’s letter with Summergate anniversary, which was, as

promised by the Event Steward, a “Spear a Palusa”. There were fighters poking each other with spears on the Armored and Rapier fields. Perhaps one day we will be able to add spears to the Unarmored as well, for the whole ‘trifecta’ spear event! The day was filled with good fighting, friends and food. Potrero was a mixed blessing for us. Friday ended hard for us as we dealt with the passing of someone who will be missed by all that knew her. After decades of being part of Potrero, there will now be a large void in the heart of the war from a rose that will not be forgotten. Saturday dawned brighter for us, as we watched a smiling giant fight through a gauntlet of Knights, ending with His Highness and finally with His Majesty who, along side His Queen, offered knighthood, and on Sunday we proudly witnessed the knighting ceremony. Also on Sunday, Their Majesties added to the ranks of the White Scarves on the Rapier field, with the newest member being one of our own and making the third Calafian White Scarf. And with two Vigils, a Royal reception as well as Court, we were not only kept busy, but were able to enjoy the company of many fine members of our Society, both from within and outside of our Kingdom. Oh, and I was able to get in a bit of fighting on both fields, to help round out my war. I would like to thank the event stewards, their staff, and their horde of volunteers who not only put in a massive amount of work, but also took the multitude of curveballs that this war threw at them and fielded each one. This war would not have happened, nor been half as magnificent, without each of you. Thank you. At Coronation, we bid farewell to Sven & Cassandra, and welcomed Patrick and Kara. The thea-ter & history added to the day and ceremony, giving sound reasoning to the mix of Viking and Irish. The only sad part was Caid’s newest Knight who almost missed swearing fealty and did miss picking up the gauntlet from the Guards’ challenge. It does lead one to wonder about his brother Knights and their ability to guide and instruct their newest member… Queen’s Champion started clear and ended with pavilion flattening winds. Nevertheless, the combatants for each field focused with a purpose that was in line with the honor of being Her Majesty’s Champions. The chivalry, honor, and fighting prowess I witnessed on every field and every form was worthy of our new Queen. Again, the only sad part was Caid’s newest Knight who somehow managed to lose his helmet - before opening Court, no less! Fortunately, he was able to ransom it back with the overwhelming generosity of the populous, and in part, with his amazing dancing skills which every Knight should have. We are looking forward to the rest of June, starting with Tanwayour anniversary were I look forward to some funnel cake and brick oven delights, here within our own Barony and Canton. This event is always fun, so please join us. We will then travel up to Gyldenholt where we will say goodbye to our friends and Cousins Ursul and Colette as they step down. And say hello to Giles and Giuseppe as they assume the mantle of Baron and Baron of our neighbor to the north. We are looking forward to an exciting day and a wonderful feast. Until we met again within the Dream, we remain Yours in Service.

This is held as part of an Open Archery Practice through UCSD Recreation. There is a $1.00 fee to use the facility. The UCSD Range has been temporarily relocated to the Torrey Pine Gliderport until approximately the end of summer 2011. Parking at the Glider-port site is free. From I-5 exit at Genesee Avenue westbound. At the top of the hill, turn left (south) on to North Torrey Pines Road. Continue two more traffic signals to Torrey Pines Scenic Drive and turn right (west). This is the street just before you reach the Salk Institute. On weekdays, drive about 300 yards and look for an open gate into overflow parking for Salk Institute staff. Turn right (north) and you’ll see a fenced area with green netting on it straight ahead. This is the Archery range. On Sundays, the gate to Salk overflow parking is closed. Instead of turning here, continue westbound until you reach the cul-de-sac at the end of Torrey Pines Scenic Drive. There is a driveway here on to the dirt leading to the Gliderport building. Once you’re on to the dirt curve to your right (east) and approach the range of the graded surface of the gliderport runway. Directions are available online at http://archery.ucsd.edu/directions.html . The range is the fenced outline just next to the ‘CA84’ marker on the aerial photo.

We did not have a big turnout at Summergate. Rec Center Representative (Lady Kimiya): The Rec Center continues to be a busy place. The

Area Manager, Debra Jones, will be retiring in June. Hopefully, it won’t take the City too long to re-place her. Last year Crusader Soccer donated the majority of funds to have the turf areas fertilized at Allied Gardens and other Navajo and Tierrasanta parks. They did the same thing this year only to be

informed the City won’t fertilize because it makes the grass grow too fast—they don’t want to have to mow more. So fertilizing won’t be done for another year. Perhaps next year the Barony may consider a donation towards the cost. The Grounds Maintenance Worker, Michael, found a pole arm left at Sun-day’s practice. Hopefully it will be claimed tonight. If not, could the Constable take possession of it? Registrar (Fia): Project is not going fast as I hoped. Web chronicler (Levi): There is a web site. Some hiccups with Potrero site, but

fixed. Let me know if you see anything. Will have more updates.

Guild Reports

Bardic Guild (Fergus): Due to class schedules and finals, suspended meeting this month. Fergus will do a class on bardic at Potrero. Will have a puppet theater and original filk at war. Brewers Guild (Levi ben Daniel): Potrero Brewing Competition is being run

by Levi Monthly meeting with about 4 in attendance. No meeting in May because of Pot-

rero. Will allow cheeses this year, but limit on entries (see web). Some members will be teaching classes Friday.

There will be a Round table discussion on brewing Friday. Company of St. Catherine (Mistress Thea): We met on May 8 and started

smocked aprons. We will continue our aprons in June. Dame Richenda has also agreed to teach us

everything she knows about making gloves...we'll begin in June if everyone is doing well with their aprons, or we'll begin glove making in the fall. St. Catherine's will go dark for July and August. June will be our last meeting until Sept. 11).

Equestrian Guild (Lady Tierrynna): We had a good turnout for the Lakeside

parade and everyone had a great time. This was our second time and we had some improvements in our showing. We definitely want to implement more im-provement next year.

Gabriel, Justin, Reina & Patrick attended the Starkhafn Anniversary and participated in the equestrian event. Gabriel won the Queens Champion, Patrick came in 4th and I think Reina came in 5th I think. Calafia had a great showing supporting Starkhafn.

The next Equestrian event will be June 30 in Altavia. I have other obligations so unfortunately will not be able to attend. I hope to coordinate other Calafians per-haps supporting that event. I have submitted the event announcement for the Calafian Equestrian Champion event in Sept. for the Crown Prints.

Had parade and it went nicely--2nd year. Improvements over last year and hope the same for next year. Practice this Sunday at 3pm. Calafia Eq. champ in Septem-
