editoriale_Non c’è bisogno di aspettare la settimana di Natale per immergersi nella gioio-

sa atmosfera della festa più attesa dell’anno. Data la vicinanza con Milano,

nelle valli bergamasche il grande ciclo di appuntamenti con manifestazioni e

tradizioni d’ogni genere incomincia il 7 dicembre, festa di Sant’Ambrogio, il

patrono dei milanesi. E’ consuetudine che gli abitanti del capoluogo lombardo

per l’occasione aprano la stagione dello sci sulle piste che costellano l’arco del-

le montagne bergamasche. Una volta questo incontro con gli sport invernali era

legato all’andamento meteorologico, oggi invece basta che la temperatura

scenda di quel tanto da consentire l’avvio degli impianti per l’innevamento arti-

ficiale, che consentono di disporre di piste a regola d’arte. E allora via con il

grande carosello della neve, delle tradizioni, dei caratteristici mercatini, delle

mille luci. Dalla città fino al più piccolo paese.

You don’t need to wait until the week of Christmas to enjoy the festive atmosphere

of the most eagerly awaited celebration of the year. Given the proximity of Ber-

gamo’s valleys to Milan, the great cycle of events, with shows and traditions of

every type, begins on 7th December with the feast of Sant’Ambrogio (Saint Am-

brose), the patron saint of the Milanese. To mark this occasion, the inhabitants of

Milan open the ski season on the slopes of the mountain ranges of Bergamo prov-

ince. Previously this winter sports event depended on the weather conditions;

today instead, the temperature only has to drop below a certain threshold for the

artificial snow-making machines to be able to start operating and create perfectly

groomed pistes. And the great carousel of snow, traditions and brightly lit Christ-

mas markets gets underway. From the city to the smallest village.

Il turista, soprattutto se straniero, che arriva a Bergamo nel periodo delle feste natalizie sicuramente resterà stupito nell’udire per le

vie della città e nelle piazze dei paesi l’inconfon-dibile suono della cornamusa. Si tratta di uno strumento che l’immaginario collettivo collega alla tradizione scozzese o irlandese. Invece ac-canto alle “Pipe bands” non sfigurano sicuramen-te i suonatori di cornamusa bergamaschi i quali rivendicano antichissime origini. Esiste infatti una versione tutta locale di questo strumento, che viene chiamato “baghèt”. Lo suonavano i pastori e i mandriani nelle feste al ritorno dall’al-peggio e in particolari occasioni, come il Natale.Alla tradizione musicale più popolare fa riferi-

the unmistakeable sound of bagpipes along the streets of the city and in the town squares. This is an instrument normally associated with Scotland or Ireland, but Bergamask bagpipes, which have ancient origins, are certainly not out of place alongside Scottish pipe bands. The local version of this instrument is called a “baghèt”, and it was played by shepherds and herdsmen during fes-tivities to celebrate their return from the mountain pastures and on particular occasions such as Christmas. Another old folk instrument is also making a comeback: the flute with three or five

Un tempo diffuso in Valle Imagna dove veniva fabbricato da abili artigiani, era facile trovare questo originale zufolo (“sifòl”, in dialetto) sui banchi dei mercati e alle sagre. Caduto in disuso, la sua produzione è stata ripresa recentemente con l’obiettivo di farlo conoscere distribuendolo nelle scuole.I primi risultati si sono avuti con la nascita in Valle Imagna di un mini-complesso che si è già esibito in pubblico. Dolci coloratissimi, torrone, zucchero filato, e poi cavallucci in legno, bambo-le, trottole. Era questo che si trovava sulle ban-carelle allineate lungo il Sentierone, nel cuore di Bergamo bassa, in occasione della festa di Santa Lucia. Oggi le bancarelle sono un pò cambiate, giocattoli e dolciumi risentono dell’effetto globa-lizzazione, ma l’atmosfera più autentica di questa

Ma per i bambini bergamaschi è la ricorrenza più attesa perché si vuole che proprio in questo giorno, o meglio nella notte precedente, ricevano tanti regali. Antiche musiche e bancarelle, ma anche tante occasioni di incontro, tante feste, tante iniziative, tanti appuntamenti con riferimento alle tradizioni natalizie. Un’atmosfera di letizia che pervade Bergamo e tutte le località della provincia in un emozionante crescendo via via che il Natale si fa più vicino. Si va dalle luci e dalle scintillanti decorazioni lungo le vie dello shopping agli alberi natalizi innalzati nelle piazze e nei luoghi più frequentati, mentre le famiglie e le comunità sembrano fare a gara nel preparare il presepio. Nel paese di Almenno San Bartolomeo, accan-to alla chiesa parrocchiale, è stato inaugurato il primo monumento in Italia dedicato all’Epifa-nia, con statue a grandezza d’uomo in una raffigurazione che diventa ancora più suggesti-va con uno spruzzo di neve, mentre nella stes-sa chiesa è stato realizzato un presepio la cui fama richiama comitive di visitatori anche dall’estero. E non è da meno la fama del Museo del Presepio a Brembo di Dalmine, dove sono esposti preziosi esemplari provenienti da tutto il mondo.

La simpatica consuetudine di festeggiare Santa Lucia è legata al periodo in cui Bergamo apparteneva alla Repubblica

di Venezia. In questa città, la Santa è ogget-to di particolare venerazione, la tradizione vuole infatti che che Santa Lucia, nella notte della vigilia che precede la festa a lei dedica-ta, vada in giro a distribuire doni ai bambini più buoni. Nel suo lungo viaggio è accompa-gnata da un asinello che porta due grandi cesti colmi di giocattoli e dolci, ai quali Lucia attinge ad ogni tappa. Nei sogni infantili la Santa percorre tutto il Veneto e la parte della Lombardia sotto il dominio di Venezia arres- tandosi al fiume Adda, che un tempo segnava il confine con lo Stato di Milano. Ispirati dalle nonne, dalla mamma o da qualche zia i bam-bini la sera della vigilia erano soliti lasciare un pò di fieno e una ciotola d’acqua per il ristoro dell’asinello; oggi sono solo i più piccoli a farlo, sostituendo all’ormai introvabile fieno un pò di pane o qualche biscotto. A Bergamo, anche per la presenza nella vicina via XX Settembre di una chiesa dove Santa Lucia è venerata, in coincidenza con la festa il centro cittadino si riempie di bancarelle colme di dolci e di giocattoli. Per tradizione i bambini raggiungono la chiesa per depositarvi una letterina con i loro desideri più segreti. Con il calare della sera le bancarelle si accendono di mille luci mentre si diffonde il profumo delle caldarroste e dello zucchero filato. Un appun-tamento al quale, dopo i bambini, nemmeno gli adulti vogliono mancare.

During the period of the Feast of Santa Lucia, the city centre of Bergamo becomes filled with stalls selling sweets and toys, which are visited by children who also stop at the church of Santa Lucia in nearby Via XX Set-tembre to leave a letter with their wish list of gifts. As evening falls, the stalls become ablaze with lights and the smell of hot roast chest-nuts and candyfloss fills the air. It’s an event that even adults will not want to miss.

The enchanting tradition of celebrating the Feast of Santa Lucia, or Saint Lucy, is connected to the period when Ber-

gamo belonged to the Republic of Venice. Santa Lucia is particularly revered in this city and, according to tradition, on the eve before her feast day she goes around giving gifts to all good children. On her long trip she is ac-companied by a donkey carrying two large baskets filled with toys and sweets, which she hands out to the children. This tradition is upheld in the entire Veneto region and the part of Lombardy that was under the rule of Venice up to the river Adda, which marked the boundary with the State of Milan. Come per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, porta nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo Bassa. Si tratta di un

ampio passaggio, affiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassico, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Alessandro che si tene-va ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sor-se il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il Sentie-rone, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolun-gamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il palazzo della provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefet-tura, oltre alla chiesa di Santo Spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affac-ciano la chiesa di San bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il teatro donizetti affiancato dal monumento al gran-de musicista. Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Ber-gamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle principali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta. P orta nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lower Ber-gamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is heart of Città Alta

(Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buildings, the Propylaea, was built in the nineteenth century in the medieval town walls (demo-lished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in Au-gust. The new centre of Bergamo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new centre is the Sentierone, a popular prome-nade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso including the provincial Authority building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the church of Santo Spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone. The Sentierone is overlooked by both the church of San bartolomeo (housing a famous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the donizetti theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musi-cian. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were establi-shed along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. The-se places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft studios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias. Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb to-wards Città Alta, stands the nineteenth-century buil-ding housing the Accademia carrara and Art Gallery with over two thousand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accademia is the Modern and contemporary Art gallery ho-sting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situated in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consigliamo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a conoscere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla stazione di arrivo si esce subito sulla piazza Mercato delle Scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipicamente medievale è il percorso di Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, la strada principale che attraver-sava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la Via Gombito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvi-se contarini alla torre civica costruita nel XII seco-lo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del palazzo della ragione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII secolo. Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la cattedrale, il battistero, la cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colle-oni, la basilica romanica di Santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran numero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi trecenteschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lo-renzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di gaetano donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Bergamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monaste-ro di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della cittadella viscontea.

Piazza vecchia, for centuries the political and admini-strative heart of Bergamo, is the first place to visit on

a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and on leaving the station you are imme-diately enveloped in the magical atmosphere of the town. Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval. Via Gombito leads to Piazza Vecchia, a beautiful square built in the fifteenth century along the line of this road axis. There are many elements of great interest in this wonderful square including the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà Alvise contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the municipal libra-ry building with its white marble façade (built in the se-venteenth century as a new town hall), and the palazzo della ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century. Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the cathedral, the baptistery, the chapel where the famous condottie-re Bartolomeo Colleoni is entombed, and the Romanesque basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baro-que interior houses a great number of works of art inclu-ding fourteenth century frescoes, extraordinary marque-try panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Fle-mish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of gaetano donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizetti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter. Another itinerary in discovery of Berga-mo’s history unites the various museums: the rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former mona-stery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti cittadella.

Oltre un secolo fa nasceva a Bergamo lo Ski Club, secondo in Italia solo do-po quello di Torino, a conferma di una

passione per la montagna e per lo sport che in terra bergamasca non è mai venuta meno. Non è sicuramente un caso il fatto che il Club Alpino vanti una delle sezioni più numerose e attive, che si è dotata di una modernissima sede, il Palamonti, chiamato anche “il rifugio in città”. I primi sciatori si avventuravano sulle nevi del passo della Presolana, mentre si ha notizia di escursioni dei primi scialpinisti sulle pendici di questa bellissima montagna, la cui roccia è della stessa composizione di quella delle Dolomiti.Oggi lo sci viene praticato lungo tutto l’arco delle Orobie, in un ventaglio di impianti di

It is certainly not by chance that the Club Alpino Italiano (Italian Alpine Club) boasts one of the most popular and active branches in Ita-ly, which is housed in the Palamonti building, also known as the “refuge in the city”. The first skiers ventured onto the snows of the Presolana Pass, while the first ski moun-taineers climbed the slopes of the beautiful Presolana mountain, whose rocks have the same composition as those of the Dolomites. Le ricette deLLA Food & Wine expert: i cASonceLLi

Emblema della cucina bergamasca, piatto povero di semplice pre-

parazione, nacque come piatto per utilizzare gli avanzi delle carni

suine e bovine. Il prodotto si arricchì con il passare degli anni.

Già nell’Ottocento il condimento di questi ravioli si rese più partico-

lare con l’aggiunta di: amaretti, uva sultanina e scorza di limone!

per 6/8 persone

Pasta: 400 gr di farina, 100 gr di semola di grano duro, 2 uova.

Ripieno: 125 gr di pane grattugiato, 1 uovo, 70 gr di grana grat-

tugiato, 150 gr di macinato per salame, 100 gr di carne bovina ar-

rostita, 5 gr di amaretti, 10 gr di uva sultanina, uno spicchio di

aglio tritato, un cucchiaio di prezzemolo tritato, sale, pepe.

Condimento: 80 gr di burro, 100 gr di pancetta tagliata a baston-

cini, 100 gr di grana grattugiato, alcune foglie di salvia.

Amalgamate bene la farina insieme alla

semola, le uova, un pizzico di sale e ag-

giungete acqua quanto basta ad ottenere

un composto omogeneo, quindi lasciatelo

riposare per almeno mezzora. Nel frattem-

po preparate il ripieno: fate rosolare con

una noce di burro il macinato per salame,

quindi unitevi la carne arrostita, l'aglio, il

prezzemolo e fate insaporire alcuni istanti.

Versate il tutto in una terrina, unitevi il

grana, il pangrattato, le uova, gli amaretti

sbriciolati, l’uvetta tritata, una macinata di

pepe e un pizzico di sale. Amalgamate

l’impasto: se risultasse troppo asciutto aggiungete un goccio di

brodo o acqua. Stendete la sfoglia, ritagliate dei dischi di 6/8 cm

riempiendoli al centro un cucchiaio di ripieno. Si cuociono i cason-

celli in abbondante acqua salata, dopo averli scolati si condiscono

con il burro fuso insaporito con foglie di salvia, la pancetta e del

parmigiano grattugiato. Gustali con un buon Valcalepio rosso!

The symbol of Bergamask cooking and a simple dish that is easily

prepared, casoncelli were created as a way of using leftover pork and

beef, and over the years other ingredients have been added. By the

nineteenth century these ravioli were made all the more unusual with

the addition of amaretti biscuits, sultanas and lemon peel!

for 6/8 people

Pasta: 400 g flour, 100 g durum wheat semolina, 2 eggs.

Filling: 125 g bread crumbs, 1 egg, 70 g grated grana (or Parmesan)

cheese, 150 g sausage meat, 100 g roast beef, 5 g amaretti biscuits,

10 g sultanas, 1 clove of garlic, 1 dessertspoon of chopped parsley,

salt, pepper.

Sauce: 80 g butter, 100 g bacon cut into strips, 100 g of grated grana

(or Parmesan) cheese, a few sage leaves.

Mix the flour together with the semolina,

eggs and a pinch of salt and add enough

water to make a smooth dough, then

leave to rest for at least half an hour.

Meanwhile, prepare the filling. Brown

the sausage meat with a knob of butter,

then add the roast beef, garlic, parsley

and mix for a few minutes to amalga-

mate the flavours. Pour everything into

a bowl, add the grana or Parmesan

cheese, breadcrumbs, egg, crumbled

amaretti biscuits, chopped sultanas,

some pepper and a pinch of salt. Mix

together. If it seems too dry, add a drop of broth or water. Roll

out the pasta, cut into 6/8 cm disks and place a spoonful of

filling in the centre. Cook the casoncelli in plenty of salted

water. After draining, pour over the melted butter flavoured

with sage, bacon and grated Parmesan. Enjoy with a glass of

red Valcalepio wine!
