ISBergamo is an International School offering a multicultural education in the English language to children starting from 30 months of age.

Opened in September 2011, the International School of Bergamo stems from a partnership with the International School of Europe which, as well as running the International Schools of Milan, Monza, Modena and Siena, has also been a key promoter of the International Schools of Bologna, Brescia, Como, Palermo and Rome.

Founded in 1958, the International School of Milan is the largest international school in Italy, and one of the few to offer the complete cycle of International Baccalaureate® programmes for learners from 3 to 18 years of age.

THE SCHOOL

The International School of Bergamo is located in a modern building in the Eastern part of Bergamo,in a green and quiet environment.

The International School of Bergamo educational programmes will be based on the International Baccalaureate® curriculum. The International Baccalaureate® (IB) is a non-profi t educational foundation offering high quality programmes of international education to a worldwide community of schools. There are more than 893,000 IB students at 3,115 schools in 140 countries. The implementation of the educational programmes is the fi rst step towards the attainment of the offi cial IB World School certifi cation. Starting from 3 years of age, the IB provides three curricula programmes specifi cally designed to meet the needs of different age-groups:

the PriMarY Years ProGraMMe (PYP) focuses on the development of the whole child in the classroom and in the world outside. the Middle Years ProGraMMe (MYP) provides a framework of academic challenge and life skills through embracing and transcendingtraditional school subjects.

the diPloMa ProGraMMe (dP) is a demanding specialised curriculum that meets the needs of highly motivated students, and leads to a qualifi cation that is recognised by leading universities around the world.

The Primary Years Programme offers a rich, challenging and stimulating curriculum designed to generate an enthusiasm for learning and value it as a life-long process.

The central focus of the PYP is the Learner Profi le which defi nes ten aspirationallearner qualities which the curriculum aims to develop. The PYP is founded on the belief that all children are naturally curious and disposed to learning. They are creative, imaginative, energetic and resourceful.

The focus of the curriculum aims to capitalise on these natural dispositions by providing meaningful, authentic activities in which children can become absorbed, committed and successful.

KinderGarten & transitionChildren in the Early Years develop basic skills in preparation for the primary level.

Learning at this age is focused on social and physical skills, as well as language and cognitive content as our students progress from Kindergarten to Transition.

Numbers, phonic alphabet letters, various shapes, and sorting and sequencing exercises provide the foundation upon which attainment of future knowledge is based. Likewise, social involvement with peers and teachers brings them into contact with a vibrant and enriching world.

eleMentarY sChoolIn the Elementary School students build upon the foundations that they have already laid in Kindergarten and Transition following the IB-based Primary Years Programme (PYP).This programme of international education is designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world.

The PYP focuses on inquiry-based teaching and learning. Units of inquiry interconnect the disciplines of language, mathematics, science, social studies, arts, and personal, social and physical education resulting in a deeper understanding and a more meaningful learning.Though acknowledging the importance of a particular subject area, the Programme of Inquiry in fact draws together elements of different disciplines into a meaningful whole and defi nes transdisciplinary themes that identify areas of shared human experience and have meaning for individuals from different cultures and ethnicities.

In September 2011, ISBergamo implemented its fi rst 2 elementary classes (Grade 1 &2). Year after year, the school will open subsequent classes following children born in 2005.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME

In future years, our school will expand to provide the IB-based Middle Years Programme. The programme consists of eight subject groups integrated through fi ve areas of interaction that give the curriculum its distinctive core.The fi ve Areas of Interaction help students recognise and explore links between the subject areas and provide a framework for learning within and across the subjects converging in the development of a holistic view of knowledge. As part of our long-term commitment to the educational goals of our students, ISBergamo is set-off to offer the IB-based Diploma Programme in the coming years. This includes a six-course specialisation that represents the fi nal stage of the IB curriculum. The IB Diploma is a passport to higher education recognised by universities around the world. In 1992, the International Baccalaureate® Diploma Programme has been offi cially recognised by the Ministry of Public Instruction which has automatically equated the degree to the Italian “Maturità”.

Part of our international mindset is the recognition we give to our host country and we are proud of the fact that ISBergamo has strong roots in the Italian community. This enables us to provide international students with an Italian experience and at the same time provide Italian students with a unique opportunity to develop a global perspective while retaining their Italian heritage.

The teaching of Italian is provided in two distinct courses.

Mother tonGue italianThe primary years are ideal for children to develop bilingual skills because of their facility to absorb language. Although most of our emphasis is focused on the development of English, the Italian programme is given ample space in the Elementary school timetable in order to provide native Italians with a solid base for the correct development of their mother tongue. Italian Mother Tongue classes begin in Grade 1, developing language skills (speaking, reading and writing) throughout the entire school curriculum.

ISBergamo will offer the preparation for the 5° Elementare (idoneità) and the Licenza Media with courses that are integrated into the IB framework. italian as a seCond lanGuaGeFor students who are learning Italian as a foreign language, we develop language skills to enable children to speak, read and write with increasing fl uency. This helps our students to enjoy and better understand the host country.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME THE ITALIAN PROGRAMME

the turniP food ProJeCtWith the support of the Fondazione Umberto Veronesi, the T.U.R.N.I.P. (Towards Understanding the Right Nutritional Implications and Practises) Food Project has the aim of introducing the correct nutritional practices in the every day diet of children and families.

Building on the recommendations of the WCRF (World Cancer Research Fund) our school project aims at proposing a series of activities which involve both parents and children, including games, conferences, kitchen lessons as well as useful tips for the implementation of a healthy diet.

Bruno Munari art labThough art will be integrated in the curriculum on a day-to-day basis during the Early Years, a specifi c Art Lab held by the Bruno Munari association will take place in school as an ongoing part of the curriculum.

Based on the works by Bruno Munari, these art labs educate children on the sense of touch and the impact of diverting the visual focus and refocusing on the tactile. diGital eduCation for the diGital natiVeIT represents an important part of teaching at ISBergamo.ISBergamo believes in providing digital natives (children who have been born in today’s IT culture) with the necessary know-how for the future. All classes are equipped with a smart board and the school has a special parnership with Apple Educational for the introduction of Ipads in the school curriculm.

The International School of Bergamo provides equal educational opportunities for all students without regard to gender, race, religion, or nationality.

Admission is subject to the approval of ISBergamo Directors, who will evaluate report grades from previous schools attended (if any) and assess the child’s level of english.

The overall consistency with the school’s educational programmes and core values also represents a key issue in the admission process.

aCCePtanCeProvided vacancies are available, students may be admitted at any time during the school year. ISBergamo reserves the right to decline admission to any candidate whose educational needs may not be satisfi ed by the institution or to postpone admission when a class is full. In this last case, the candidate will be placed on a waiting list.

Class assiGnMentStudents are assigned to a class according to age. Age is determined on a yearly basis (January -December). • The Early Years include Kindergarten and Transition. Very young children (from 30 months) are enrolled in Pre-K. • The Elementary School begins at 5, one year earlier than the italian system.• Please note that 2005 children are the oldest children enrolled in the school.

Parent-teaCher assoCiationISBergamo strongly believes in the importance of the relationship between school and parents and promotes a sense of community where parents feel part of the organisation and share the educational programme of their child. Several initiatives are promoted throughout the school year in order to reinforce this spirit.

sChool uniforMsChildren are required to wear a school uniform.

liBrarYThe school library is a valuable resource for the school as the love for reading is highly encouraged. The book offer will be constantly evolving in order to provide students with an always richer offer.

lunChAll children are required to eat lunch at school. A catering company prepares the fi rst dish in school and the rest off campus. A healthy and balanced diet is arranged between the provider and the school in order to meet the important nutritional needs of the children. Special diets are catered for on request. A detailed menu is prepared and published on the school website.

sChool BusISBergamo provides a door-to-door school bus service. Availability is subject to the area of residency.

after sChool aCtiVitiesAt ISBergamo, extra-curricular activities parallel the offi cial curriculum reinforcing important aspects of the school philosophy such as social interaction and physical activity. After-school activities are available for students from Grade 1.
