editoriale_Bergamo bella di giorno e di notte. Se la città nelle ore di luce è tutta da vedere e da scoprire, non è assolutamente da perdere l’antica città sul colle dopo il tramonto del sole. Lo spettacolo della grandiosa cerchia delle mura illuminate non è che la premessa alle suggestioni di piazza Vecchia, dei monumenti, delle anguste vie che portano dalle mille luci dei negozi e dei caratteristici locali aperti fino a tarda ora ad angoli appartati, dove rivivono le atmosfere dei tempi passa-ti. Dalla città ricca di storia, al fiume che scorre tra la storia: l’Adda. Alle infinite testimonianze lasciate dall’uomo lungo le sue sponde si aggiungono tratti di selvaggia bellezza che si sono conservati quasi intatti. Ad essi si ispirò Leonardo da Vinci nel comporre alcuni suoi celebri dipinti, come la Vergine delle rocce.

Bergamo: beautiful by day and by night. If the city is a place that really must be seen and discovered during daylight hours, then it definitely should not be missed after sunset. The spec-tacle of the mighty illuminated walls is just a prelude to the splendour of Piazza Vecchia, the monuments and the narrow alleyways that wind from the thousand lights of the shops and characteristic bars and restaurants, which remain open until late, to secluded corners that recapture the atmosphere of times gone by. From a city filled with history, we move to a river that flows among history: the Adda. The river offers many signs of man along its banks, which alternate with sections of wild, almost unspoilt beauty that even inspired Leonardo da Vinci when he painted some of his most famous works, such as the Virgin of the Rocks.

Notte nella Bergamo sul colle, un itinerario incantato tra le luci di mille locali e le ombre di viuzze dentro la città medievale. Ma prima di mettersi in viaggio una tappa è d’obbligo: la visita alla torre civica, la cui potente struttura s’innalza in un

angolo di piazza Vecchia. Le sue pietre raccontano otto secoli di storia. Un moderno ascensore, tutto acciaio e cristallo, consente di raggiungere la sommità. Suggeriamo di salire fin lassù al tramonto (l’ascensore è in funzione fino alle ore 21) per ammirare dall’alto il panorama della città antica sovrastata da un’altra torre, quella di Gombito, e da numerosi campanili: indimenticabili le vedute sulla cappella Colleoni e la basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore; lo sguardo poi corre verso la pianura Padana: una distesa illumi-nata che sembra non avere fine; ma se ci si volge verso nord un’ombra scura indica la presenza della catena delle Orobie, una sequenza di vette sempre più alte che conduco-no al cuore delle Alpi. Tornati in piazza Vecchia, si può far sosta in uno dei tanti ristoranti e pizzerie per una piacevole cena, nel corso della quale, se sono ormai le 22, vi consigliamo di prestare un pò di attenzione per cogliere il profondo suono della grande campana, meglio nota come “Campanone”, che annuncia, come secoli or sono, il coprifuoco. è un’antica tradizione che affonda le origini nel medioevo. Non tutti i bergamaschi sono concordi sulle origini. Secondo alcuni il Campanone veniva fatto suonare per annunciare la chiusura delle porte nelle mura cittadine: i rintocchi ve-nivano scanditi lentamente, per dar modo alla gente di rientrare e per i ritardatari non

Night in hilltop Bergamo, an enchanted itinerary among the lights of a thousand places and the shadows of alleyways in the medieval city. But before setting off on your tour, there is one obligatory stop: a visit

to the Civic Tower, whose imposing structure stands tall in the corner of Piazza Vecchia. Its stones reveal eight centuries of history. A modern lift of glass and steel leads to the top. We suggest heading up here at sunset (the lift operates until 9 p.m.) to admire the view of the old city, which is also dominated by another tower, the Gombito Tower, and numerous bell towers. The sight of the Colleoni Chapel and the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore is unforgettable, and there are also breathtaking views over the Po plain, an illuminated expanse that seems to go on forever, and to the north, towards the dark shadow of the Oro-bie mountain chain, a sequence of tall peaks that lead to the heart of the Alps. Back in Piazza Vecchia, you can stop in one of the many restaurants and piz-zerias for an enjoyable dinner, during which, at 10 p.m., you can listen to the deep sound of the Civic Tower’s large bell, better known as the “Campanone” (big bell), which some hundred years ago announced the town’s curfew. This ancient tradition has its roots in the Middle Ages. Not all people from Bergamo agree on its origins; some believe the Campanone was rung to announce the closing of the city gates. The bell was tolled slowly to give the people time to return and at the last toll the gates were locked - those who were late had to

c’era niente da fare: all’ultimo rintocco le porte venivano sbarrate fino al giorno succes-sivo.Ed ecco, dopo l’ultimo rintocco, mettiamoci in viaggio alla scoperta della Bergamo meno nota. Incominciamo dal lungo asse viario che attraversa l’intera città sul colle. è costitui-to da due vie - via Gombito e via Colleoni - che vanno da un capo all’altro dell’abitato con direzione est-ovest. Vi si affacciano decine di negozi con le proposte più varie, oltre a locali dove, se non avete ancora cenato, potete soddisfare, oltre all’appetito, la vostra ricerca di piatti tipici della cucina bergamasca, la cui tradizione è sapientemente rivisitata da ottimi cuochi.Questa piacevole camminata, che unisce la piazza Mercato delle Scarpe (dove si arriva con la funicolare da Bergamo bassa) alla Cittadella (nei pressi Colle Aperto: punto di approdo per chi sale in autobus o in auto), offre la possibilità di uscire dal percorso prin-cipale per addentrarsi nella rete di viuzze la cui trama delinea la città medievale. Qui le luci si diradano come anche l’animazione, salvo nei luoghi sui quali si aprono locali di ri-chiamo. A chi si è incamminato nella tarda serata questa parte della città offre angoli di grande suggestione: le poche luci rivelano dimore, chiese antiche, portoni rinserrati oltre i quali si può fantasticare esistano chiusi cortili, angusti passaggi, angoli misteriosi, il cui accesso è privilegio di pochi. Tutti possono invece accedere alle serate che nel corso dell’estate vengono organizzate nelle sedi dei Musei e dell’Orto Botanico. Frequentatissimo, da giovani e non, il bar ospi-

wait outside until the next morning. After the last toll, you can continue your tour in discovery of lesser known Ber-gamo. We suggest beginning in the street that crosses the entire hilltop town. It is made up of two roads - Via Gombito and Via Colleoni - which run from one end of the town to the other, from east to west. The street is not only lined with shops selling all manner of items but also bars and restaurants that, if you have not yet had dinner, will satisfy both your appetite and desire for local and traditional dishes reinvented by excellent chefs. This pleasant route, which unites Piaz-za Mercato delle Scarpe (where the funicular train arrives from lower Ber-gamo) with the Cittadella (citadel) (near Colle Aperto, the pick up and set down point for those arriving by bus or car), offers visitors the opportunity leave the main road and explore the network of backstreets and alleyways that distinguish this medieval town. Here the lights fade, as does the night life, except in a few places where popu-lar bars can be found. Visitors to this part of the city late in the evening will discover some delightful corners: the few lights reveal houses, old churches and large locked doors, behind which one can imagine closed courtyards, narrow passages, mysterious corners, seen only by a privileged few. Everyone instead can attend the evenings held during summer in the museums and Botanic Garden. Another very popular spot with both the young and not so young, is the bar inside the Museo Storico della Città (City History Museum), which, for the occasion, opens the very beautiful cloisters of the former monastery of San Francesco.

Finally, from the city within the walls to the city “on the walls”. Don’t miss the oppor-tunity to take a walk along the ramparts of the Venetian walls. This imposing forti-fication, built over four centuries ago, of-fers wonderful views of lower Bergamo and the countryside beyond. And to make the evening even more interesting, bars have been set up outside in three points of the fortified ring (in Sant’Agostino park, and the ramparts of San Michele and San Giacomo, near the gate of the same name) for the entire summer period, where you can sit, drink or eat snacks while listening to music. Even the more modern lower Bergamo offers many opportunities for enjoying an entertaining evening. There are many pubs and bars dotted around the centre, where you can drink and listen to music outside, in internal gardens and in the parks. Don’t miss special events such as

Il divertimento a Bergamo non è solo in Città Alta, in centro ci aspettano i nuovi entusiasmanti appuntamenti della movida bergamasca e al Parco della Trucca la festa inizia a giugno e finisce a settembre con concerti, cucina tipica, tanti corsi e attività. Antico confine tra Stati, protagonista dello sviluppo economico e industriale di una vasta area della pianura e delle sue città, Milano compresa, il fiume Adda oggi ha assunto un ruolo ben diverso offrendo ai lombardi e ai turisti il patrimonio

d’arte e di storia che arricchisce le sue sponde. Il “più lombardo dei fiumi”, come è sta-to definito, è un autentico museo a cielo aperto dando in più la possibilità al visitatore di compiere gite ed escursioni lungo il suo corso. Un itinerario alla scoperta di luoghi di grande interesse ed emozionanti incontri con opere dell’uomo, come il ponte di San Michele, capolavoro dell’ingegneria dell’Ottocento, e il villaggio operaio di Crespi, inse-rito nel 1995 nella lista del patrimonio dell’umanità dell’Unesco.Questo itinerario può incominciare proprio dal villaggio Crespi, frazione di Capriate d’Adda. Considerato uno degli esempi meglio conservati di villaggi operai, venne costrui-to per dare ospitalità ai dipendenti del grande stabilimento per la filatura del cotone che la famiglia Crespi, ricchi industriali del settore, insediarono lungo l’Adda per sfruttare l’energia del fiume. L’attività dello stabilimento iniziò nel 1878 e raggiunse in breve un grande sviluppo: prima della fine del secolo, tra il 1894 e il 1897, vi lavoravano ben 4.000 dipendenti; la nascita del villaggio fu quasi contemporanea. Lo ideò Silvio Crespi, figlio del fondatore dell’azienda, dopo l’esperienza dei suoi viaggi in Inghilterra, dove si era recato per studiare lo sviluppo dell’industria tessile. Industriale illuminato, per Silvio Crespi il villaggio doveva costituire la residenza ideale per le famiglie dei dipendenti, i quali avrebbero potuto disporre di una serie di servizi d’avanguardia per quei tempi: dall’ambulatorio medico al teatro, dall’asilo per i bambi-vi

The River Adda, an ancient border between States and protagonist of the indus-trial and economic development of a vast area of the Po plain and its cities - Milan included - takes on a very different role today, offering Lombardy resi-

dents and tourists a heritage of art and history. The “most Lombard of rivers”, as it has been called, is an genuine open-air museum along which visitors can take tours and walks in discovery of fascinating places and man-made constructions such as the San Michele bridge, a nineteenth-century masterpiece of engineering, and the workers’ village of Crespi, which was placed on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 1995.An itinerary might begin in the village of Crespi, situated on the outskirts of Capriate d’Adda. Considered one of the best preserved examples of a workers’ village, it was built to house the employees of the large cotton mill established by the wealthy Crespi family of industrialists to exploit the energy of the river. The mill began ope-rating in 1878 and rapidly evolved into a large industry. Between 1894 and 1897, 4,000 people were employed at the mill, and the village was established at ap-proximately the same time. Silvio Crespi, son of the company’s founder, developed the idea after his experiences in England, where he spent time studying the textile industry. An enlightened industrialist, Silvio Crespi wanted to build the ideal village for employees’ families, including a series of services that were extremely modern for the period: medical surgery, theatre, kindergarten, school, sports field and fire station. Un’at-tenzione speciale veniva riserva-ta alle case degli operai, tutte dotate di giardino ed orto e con soluzioni abitative molto confor-tevoli; accanto a queste case sorsero anche le ville per i diri-genti, mentre su tutto sovrastava la sontuosa villa dei Crespi, in stile medievale.Una passerella nei pressi del vil-laggio consente di superare il fiume Adda per raggiungere Trezzo d’Adda, situato proprio di fronte e dominato dalla poderosa mole del castello e dalla sua tor-re. La tradizione vuole che sia stato fondato dalla regina longo-barda Teodolinda (in realtà a Trezzo sono venute alla luce nel secolo scorso importantissime testimonianze longobarde), ma in realtà la rocca risale all’epoca dei Visconti, signori di Milano. Il punto di partenza dell’itinerario di visita potrebbe essere proprio Trezzo, soprattutto per chi inten-de servirsi dell’auto. Lasciata quest’ultima nei pressi del san-tuario di Concesa, dove c’è co-modità di parcheggio, si può uti-lizzare la passerella per raggiun-gere il villaggio di Crespi e poi ritornare. Trezzo è il punto di partenza idea-le per l’itinerario lungo l’Adda utilizzando la pista ciclabile che segue il tracciato dell’alzaia e raggiungere, dopo circa 13 chilo-metri, Imbersago, situato alla fi-ne del viaggio che si snoda nel Parco Adda Nord. L’alzaia non presenta particolari difficoltà e può essere percorsa su biciclette

A walkway near the village leads over the water to Trezzo d’Adda, which is situated directly in front of Crespi on the opposite bank of the river. Trezzo is do-minated by a mighty castle and its tower which, according to legend, was built by the Lom-bard queen Teodolinda (ex-tremely important Lombard dis-coveries were made during the last century), but in reality the fortress dates back to the time of the Visconti, the rulers of Milan. Trezzo is the ideal start-ing point of any tour, particu-larly if you intend using your car. There are good car parking facilities near Concesa Sanctu-ary, and you can take the walk-way over the river to Crespi and then return. Trezzo is also the ideal starting point for a ride along River Adda following the cycle path that runs along the towpath. The town of Imbersago is situ-ated at the end of the path, which runs through the North Adda Park, and is approximate-ly 13 kilometres from Trezzo. There are no particularly diffi-cult sections along the towpath and a bike with gears is all that is needed. The first stop is the Taccani hydroelectric plant, which is overlooked by Trezzo Castle and blends in harmoni-

do da Vinci, il genio del Rinascimento, il quale proprio qui studiò il flusso e i vortici delle acque come risulta dai suoi disegni conservati in Inghilterra, alla Royal Library di Windsor.Più volte ospite della famiglia Melzi nella villa a Vaprio d’Adda durante il suo soggiorno a Milano tra il 1506 e il 1513, Leonardo eseguì anche diversi disegni del fiume e del suo straordinario ambiente naturale. Per gli studiosi e i critici d’arte alcuni scorci di rocce e salti d’acqua sono gli stessi che il grande artista riportò nei suoi taccuini di disegni e che compaiono nello sfondo di alcuni suoi celebri dipinti, come la Vergine delle rocce. Più oltre la gola dell’Adda è dominata da una straordinaria opera di ingegneria. Si tratta del ponte di San Michele, che congiunge i paesi di Paderno e di Calusco d’Adda, situati rispettivamente in provincia di Milano e di Bergamo. Il ponte, progettato dallo svizzero Jules Rothlisberger, fu costruito tra il 1887 e il 1889; vi lavorarono 470 operai che im-piegarono solo bulloni ribattuti perché la saldatura avrebbe creato troppi problemi. Del peso di 2.500 tonnellate, lungo 266 metri e alto 85 metri sul livello del fiume, vi passano una strada e una ferrovia. Dopo questo capolavoro di archeologia industriale, il viaggio si conclude con una singolare testimonianza di tecnica medievale. Le sponde del fiume tra Villa d’Adda e Imbersago sono collegate da un singolare sistema di tra-sporto che risale a molti secoli or sono. Si tratta di un traghetto che per muoversi tra le due rive sfrutta il flusso dell’acqua. Celebre perché Leonardo da Vinci lo raffigurò in uno dei suoi disegni, da allora la tecnica e la forma del natante, pur rinnovato per l’usura del tempo, non sono per niente cambiati.

Further ahead, the mouth of the Adda is dominated by another extraordinary work of engineering. Come per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, por-ta nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo

Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, af-fiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassi-co, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Ales-sandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il sentiero-ne, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il palazzo della provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla Chiesa di santo spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la Chiesa di san bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il teatro donizet-ti affiancato dal monumento al grande musi-cista. Attorno al nuovo centro è andata crescendo la Bergamo moderna che ha conservato gli antichi borghi sorti sulle direttrici delle prin-cipali strade che dalla pianura e dalle valli portavano a Bergamo Alta. P orta nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lo-wer Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is

heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buil-dings, the Propylaea, was built in the ninete-enth century in the medieval town walls (de-molished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Berga-mo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new cen-tre is the sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso inclu-ding the provincial Authority building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the Church of santo spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone. The Sentierone is overlooked by both the Church of san bartolomeo (housing a fa-mous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the donizetti theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were establi-shed along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft stu-dios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias. Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the ninete-enth-century building housing the Accademia Carrara and Art Gallery with over two thou-sand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accade-mia is the Modern and Contemporary Art gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The bernareggi Museum of Sacred Art is situa-ted in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

P iazza vecchia, per secoli cuore politico e amministrativo di Bergamo, è il naturale

punto di partenza per visitare la città storica che si è sviluppata sulla collina. Al turista consiglia-mo, se ne ha possibilità, di incominciare a cono-scere Città Alta utilizzando la funicolare, il cui primo impianto risale a 120 anni fa. Dalla sta-zione di arrivo si esce subito sulla piazza Mer-cato delle scarpe e già qui si è avvolti dalla magica atmosfera di questa città che alterna anguste vie medievali a spazi luminosi. Tipica-mente medievale è il percorso di Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, la strada principale che attraver-sava la città da est ad ovest. Ed è la Via Gom-bito che conduce a piazza Vecchia formatasi nel ‘400 lungo la direttrice di quest’asse urbano.Molti gli elementi di grande interesse in questa bellissima piazza. Dalla fontana donata dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini alla torre Civica costruita nel XII secolo, dalla facciata in candido marmo del palazzo della biblioteca civica (costruito nel Seicento come nuova sede municipale) alla mole del palazzo della ra-gione, risalente alla seconda metà del XII se-colo. Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la Cattedrale, il batti-stero, la Cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la basilica romanica di santa Maria Maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran nu-mero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi tre-centeschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di gaetano donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Ber-gamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monaste-ro di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della Cittadella viscontea.

Piazza vecchia, for centuries the political and administrative heart of Bergamo, is the

first place to visit on a tour of Città Alta, the historical city of Upper Bergamo that developed high on the hilltop. We recommend you begin your tour of Città Alta by taking the funicular railway, built 120 years ago, which connects the upper and lower towns. The funicular arrives directly in piazza Mercato delle scarpe and on leaving the station you are immediately en-veloped in the magical atmosphere of the town. Città Alta alternates narrow medieval alleyways with bright open spaces, and the route along Via Gombito-Via Colleoni, the main thoroughfare running from east to west, is typically medieval. Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the Cathedral, the baptistery, the Chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Col-leoni is entombed, and the Romanesque basi-lica of santa Maria Maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century fre-scoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of gaetano donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizet-ti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter. Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s hi-story unites the various museums: the rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti Cittadella.
