25, un bel numeroVenticinque. Anche se non rientra nei cosiddetti numeri “perfetti” è comunque un numero di tutto rispetto per celebrare un evento. Nel caso di The Key c’è una buona ragione: siamo al 25° numero di questa pubblicazione nata per far conoscere e promuovere Bergamo e il suo territorio tra i turisti e i potenziali visitatori. Un obiettivo che pen-siamo sia stato raggiunto alla grande. Di ogni numero di The Key ne vengono stampate e diffuse 50.000 copie: un quantitativo notevole che, se lo prendiamo in considerazione sulla base di quel 25 citato in apertu-ra, e lo moltiplichiamo di conseguenza ci dice che le copie finora messe in circolazione toccano la ragguardevole cifra di 1.250.000. Un forte messaggio “a portata di mano” grazie a una distribuzione capillare at-traverso alberghi, ristoranti, locali, sedi di Turismo Bergamo, oltre che a manifestazioni come fiere e borse turistiche. La Redazione di The Key ha pensato di celebrare l’evento - importante per la storia della rivista, ma non solo - prendendo lo spunto da questa circostanza per presenta-re i 25 siti a Bergamo e provincia che, a suo giudizio, meritano di essere posti in evidenza per il loro valore storico, culturale, artistico, ambienta-le e, in sintesi, turistico. Ma senza dimenticare lo straordinario contesto del territorio, in cui questi siti affondano le loro radici.

25, a good numberTwenty-five. Although it does not feature among the so-called “perfect” numbers, twenty-five is however a good number for celebrating an event. In the case of The Key, there is a good reason: we have reached issue number 25 of this publication, which was created to introduce and promote Bergamo and its province to tourists and potential visitors. An objective that we believe has been achieved with great success. Some 50,000 co-pies of each issue of The Key are printed and distributed. If we multiply this figure by the 25 issues published to date, we arrive at the considera-ble and respectable figure of 1,250,000 copies. This powerful message is always “on hand” thanks to its widespread distribution in hotels, restau-rants, bars and Turismo Bergamo offices, as well as events such as trade fairs and tourism exchanges. The Editorial Staff of The Key would not only like to celebrate this event - important for the history of the magazine - but also, drawing inspiration from this occasion, present the 25 sites in Bergamo and its province that, in their opinion, are worthy of note for their historical, cultural, artistic, environmental and, in short, touristic value, but without forgetting the extraordinary context of the land in which these places are rooted.

1 nella piazza ricca di storia

Classificata tra le piazze più belle d’Ita-lia, piazza Vecchia è il cuore dell’antica città sul colle. Non a caso su di essa si affacciano edifici e monumenti che sono simbolo della storia di Bergamo. Il suo aspetto definitivo si è consolidato nel ‘400 con il passaggio sotto il dominio della Repubblica di Venezia. La fontana al centro venne donata nel 1780 dal podestà veneto Alvise Contarini. Nell’ele-ganza e nelle luci della piazza sembrano si riflettano atmosfere veneziane.

Known as one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, Piazza Vecchia is the pulsating heart of the ancient hillside town of upper Bergamo. It is not by chance that it is overlooked by buil-dings and monuments that symbolise the history of Bergamo. Its definitive appearance was established in the fifteenth century when the city came under the rule of the Republic of Veni-ce. The fountain in the centre of the square was donated in 1780 by the Venetian podestà, Alvise Contarini. Its Venetian atmosphere is reflected in the elegance and lights of the square.

menti di Città Alta. è detta anche torre del Campanone per la grande campana che alle 10 di ogni sera suona 180 rin-tocchi, segnale dell’antico coprifuoco.

Must-see placescivic tower. Built in the twelfth cen-tury, the tower today has a fast elevator that takes visitors to a large terrace with panoramic views over the square and the roofs and monuments of Città Alta (upper Bergamo). The tower is also known as the Campanone because of its large bell that tolls 180 times at 10 p.m. each eve-ning to mark the old curfew.

palace of reason. This imposing build-ing on the south side of the square dates back to the twelfth century and was once the headquarters of the first rulers (con-soli) of the city. Its current appearance dates back to the sixteenth century when it was rebuilt after a fire.

Nuovo (literally New Palace), which was built in the sixteenth century as the municipal headquarters; the Civic Li-brary was transferred there during the last century.

duomo. Sulla piazza del Duomo, col-legata a piazza Vecchia dal portico del Palazzo della Ragione, si affacciano i monumenti religiosi più insigni della città. A partire dal Duomo, dedicato a Sant’Alessandro, sotto il quale recenti scavi hanno individuato i resti di due precedenti basiliche: una paleocristia-na, l’altra romanica.

cathedral. Some of the most famous religious buildings in the city look onto Piazza del Duomo, which is connected to Piazza Vecchia by the arcade under Palazzo della Ragione. The Duomo (Cathedral) is dedicated to St. Alexan-der. The remains of two previous churches have been found beneath the building during recent excavations - a paleo-Christian church, and a Romane-sque basilica.

Sul sito di una chiesetta omonima, nel 1157 furono gettate le basi della basilica, il cui in-volucro romanico racchiude, in uno straordinario contesto barocco, tesori d’arte, tra cui le tarsie disegnate da Lorenzo Lotto; un monumento indica la tomba di Gaetano Donizetti, univer-salmente noto per le sue melodie. All’esterno spiccano i due protiri del ‘300, ricchi di marmi.

santa maria maggiore. The founda-tions of the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore were laid in 1157 on the site of a small church of the same name. This church with its Romanesque exte-

rior hides an extraordinarily rich Ba-roque interior with many art treasures, including marquetry panels designed by Lorenzo Lotto and a monument that indicates the tomb of Gaetano Donizet-ti, a musician known worldwide for his music. Two fourteenth-century entran-ces, rich in marble decorations, chara-cterise the exterior.

cappella colleoni. Venne fatta co-struire dal celebre condottiero Bartolo-meo Colleoni per accogliere la sua tomba e quella della figlia della Medea. Il progetto è di uno dei più geniali pro-tagonisti dell’architettura rinascimenta-le lombarda, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, che la realizzò tra il 1472 e il 1476.

colleoni chapel. The chapel was commissioned by the famous condot-tiero Bartolomeo Colleoni to house his tomb and that of his daughter, Medea. The chapel was designed by one of the most ingenious protago-nists of Renaissance architecture in Lombardy, Giovanni Antonio Amadeo, and it was built between 1472 and 1476.

battistero. Di fronte al Duomo, si in-nalza il piccolo edificio a pianta otta-gonale, costruito nel 1340 all’interno della basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore da Giovanni da Campione. Rimosso, il battistero ebbe l’attuale sistemazione nel 1898.

baptistry. In front of the Duomo stands a small octagonal-shaped building, which was built in 1340 in-side the Basilica of Santa Maria Mag-giore by Giovanni da Campione. It was later removed and was placed in its current position in 1898.

mura veneziane. Costruite tra il 1561 e il 1588 a presidio del confine estremo dei terri-tori della Repubblica di Venezia, hanno dato la loro impronta all’intera città. Il circuito com-pleto è di circa sei chilometri: si può percorre-re a piedi il tratto più spettacolare da Colle Aperto fino all’ex monastero di Sant’Agostino.

Da veDerecittadella. All’inizio della bella passeggiata lungo i baluardi, adiacente a Colle Aperto, il complesso della Cittadella, un tempo podero-samente fortificato, accoglie il Museo Civico di Scienze Naturali e il Museo Archeologico.

casa donizetti. Da Colle Aperto, uscendo da porta Sant’Alessandro, dopo poche de-cine di metri si raggiunge il suggestivo Borgo Canale, dove si trova la casa in cui nacque Gaetano Donizetti.

venetian walls. Built between 1561 and 1588 to guard the remotest area of the Re-public of Venice, the walls have left their mark on the entire city. Their full length is approximately six kilometres, and the most spectacular section, from Colle Aperto to the former monastery of Sant’Agostino, can be visited on foot. Must-see placescitadel. The Cittadella complex, situated at the start of the beautiful walkway along the ramparts, alongside Colle Aperto, was once a powerful fortification and today houses the Natural Science Museum and the Archaeo-logy Museum.

Gate, after a few hundred metres you come across the striking road of Borgo Canale, where you can find the house in which Gaetano Donizetti was born.

3 la corona dei colli

san vigilio. Sul colle che domina la Berga-mo antica si può salire a piedi, in auto o con la funicolare. Lassù (m 495) fin dall’epoca medievale esisteva un castello, che Venezia trasformò con la costruzione delle Mura. Numerose le ville Liberty, mentre viuzze e viottoli portano nel verde del Parco regio-nale dei colli di Bergamo.

Da veDeremonasteri. Ricchi di orti, un tempo i colli rifornivano la città di frutta e verdura: qualche coltivazione resiste ancora. Nell’ambiente naturale quasi intatto spiccano l’ex monastero di Astino (in restauro) e quello di Valmarina.

san vigilio. This hill overlooking old Bergamo can be reached by foot, car or by funicular train. The ruins of a medie-val castle, which Venice transformed at the time of the construction of the walls, can be found at the top (495 metres). There are also numerous Art Nouveau villas, while alleyways and paths lead to the green areas of the Bergamo Regio-nal “Parco dei Colli” (Hills Park).

Must-see placesmonasteries. Filled with vegetable plots, the hills once provided the city with fruit and vegetables. Only a few cultivated fields re-main today. The former monasteries of Astino (currently undergoing restoration) and Valmarina can be found in this unspoilt natural environment.

4 il nuovo centro

sentierone. Completato negli anni Venti del secolo scorso sul luogo occupato dall’antica Fiera, il nuovo centro di Berga-mo è caratterizzato da un ampio spazio conosciuto come Sentierone, luogo abi-tuale d’incontro per i cittadini. Vi si affac-ciano il Teatro Donizetti, la chiesa di San Bartolomeo con un dipinto di Lorenzo Lot-to, e piazza Vittorio Veneto; poco distanti la piazza Dante e i propilei neoclassici di Porta Nuova.

Da veDerevia xx settembre. Ricca di negozi, collega il Sentierone e il tradizionale centro commerciale di Bergamo bassa, con perno piazza Pontida e l’antico bor-go San Leonardo; sul lato opposto la via Tasso porta alla chiesa di Santo Spirito, dalle belle linee rinascimentali, e a un altro antico borgo: quello di Pignolo.

tures a spacious area known as the Sen-tierone, which is the customary meeting place of local residents. The area is over-looked by the Donizetti Theatre, the church of San Bartolomeo, which houses a painting by Lorenzo Lotto, and Piazza Vittorio Veneto; a short distance away lie Piazza Dante and the neoclassical propy-laea of Porta Nuova.

Must-see placesvia xx settembre. Filled with shops, this street connects the Sentierone and the tra-ditional commercial centre of lower Berga-mo, which is centred around Piazza Pontida and the old San Leonardo district. At the op-posite end, Via Tasso leads to the church of Santo Spirito, with its beautiful Renaissance lines, and to another old district: Pignolo.

5 un prezioso scrigno

accademia carrara. La Pinacoteca, ora in restauro, è una delle più ricche raccolte museali d’Italia. Di fronte, negli spazi di un convento del XV seco-lo, ha sede la Galleria d’Arte moderna e contemporanea, nei cui spazi vengo-no periodicamente allestite mostre di grande interesse.

Da veDerepignolo. è uno dei cinque borghi cit-tadini e il più interessante dal punto di vista architettonico per la presenza, nella parte superiore, di una serie di palazzi cinquecenteschi. In uno di que-sti il Museo Diocesano d’Arte Sacra Adriano Bernareggi; poco distante, nella chiesa di San Bernardino, il dipin-to “Madonna col Bambino in trono”, di Lorenzo Lotto.

accademia carrara. The Art Gallery, currently undergoing restoration, has one of the best museum collections in Italy. The Gallery of Modern and Con-temporary Art is situated opposite the gallery in a sixteenth-century convent. It periodically hosts exhibitions of great interest. Must-see placespignolo. This is one of the five city di-stricts and the most interesting from an architectural point of view due to the presence of a series of sixteenth-century buildings in its upper part. One of these houses the Adriano Bernareggi Diocesan

Museum of Sacred Art; a short distance away, in the church of San Bernardino, is the painting “Madonna with Child on throne” by Lorenzo Lotto.

san tomè. Gioiello del Romanico lom-bardo, la piccola chiesa a pianta circo-lare sorge in un ambiente agreste della plaga dell’antico Lemine (ora sud-divisa tra i Comuni di Almenno San Salvatore e San Bartolomeo). Il terri-torio è ricco di importanti testimonian-ze d’architettura romanica: le chiese di San Giorgio e di San Nicola e il santua-rio della Madonna del Castello.

A gem of Lombardy Ro-manesque style, this small church with circular plan stands in an agricultural con-text in the area of old Lemine (today di-vided into the municipalities of Almenno San Salvatore and San Bartolomeo). The area abounds with important Romane-sque monuments, including the churches of San Giorgio and San Nicola and the sanctuary of Madonna del Castello.

7 brembo e serio

Sono i due principali fiumi che solcano le Alpi bergamasche (Orobie) e che scendono verso la pianura lungo le valli Brembana e Seriana, un tempo e anche oggi molto operose. Frequentate d’estate per le numerose località di villeggiatura e d’inverno per i moderni cen-tri sciistici, con decine di impianti di risalita, piste da discesa e fondo. Una rete di sentieri (tra cui il celebre Sentiero delle Orobie) e di rifugi offrono l’ambiente ideale per escursioni, trekking e alpinismo.

These are the area’s two main rivers, which carve their way through the Bergamask Alps (Orobie) and descend to the plain along the ever industrious Brembana and Seriana val-leys. These valleys are popular in the summer because of their numerous resorts and in the winter because of their modern ski centres with dozens of lifts and downhill and cross-country runs. A network of paths (including the famous Orobie Path) and mountain refu-ges offer the ideal environment for hiking, trekking and climbing.

9 san giovanni bianco

Sorto dove il torrente Enna confluisce nel fiu-me Brembo, nel suo centro storico si contano sette ponti tra inconsueti e suggestivi scorci. A pochi chilometri, nel borgo di Oneta sorge la cosiddetta casa di Arlecchino.

Located at the spot where the River Enna flows into the River Brembo, this town’s old centre has seven bridges that offer unusual and strik-ing views. A few kilometres away, the village of Oneta is home to the so-called House of Arlecchino (Harlequin).

Il borgo ha mantenuto intatte le sue caratte-ristiche medievali grazie al fatto che ancora oggi è raggiungibile a piedi. Vi ha avuto origi-ne la famiglia dei Tasso, da cui discendono il poeta Torquato (autore della “Gerusalemme Liberata”) e i geniali fondatori della società di corrieri che gettarono le basi del moderno servizio postale. Particolarmente suggestiva la strada porticata.

This village has retained all its medieval fea-tures due to the fact that, still today, it can only be reached on foot. The Tasso family originated from Cornello. The poet Torquato (author of “Jerusalem Delivered”) and the inge-nious founders of a courier company that laid the foundations for the modern postal service were descendents of this family. The porticoed road in the village is particularly striking.

Situated at the beginning of the Seria-na Valley, this town is the first stop in a tour of art and history along the course of the River Serio. The old part of the town is centred around the Ba-silica of San Martino with its famous sacristies. Further up the valley lies Valbondione, a destination which, during the summer, is visited by many people who arrive here to see the open-ing of Serio Falls, with its triple drop ex-ceeding an overall height of 300 metres.

The area of Bratto-Dorga has been a tourist destination since the begin-ning of the last century, as demon-strated by the presence of numerous Art Nouveau villas. It is situated at the base of Mount Presolana (2,521 m), which is also known as the “Queen of the Orobie” for its spectacular lime-stone faces, which are the same as the Dolomites.

The iron mines were the main source of em-ployment until over a century ago, but today visitors can get a glimpse of life long ago at the museum or by taking a tour of the mine, which extends for a distance of 800 metres.

This small town of poor farmers came under the spotlight when Cardinal Angelo Giuseppe Ron-calli, who was born here in 1881, was elected Pope (1958-1963). The town, which was completely transformed, offers tours of the house where Pope John XXIII was born and a museum. A short dis-tance away, on the slopes of Mount Canto, lies the Romane-sque Fontanella Abbey, dating back to the eleventh century. An old mule track leads from the abbey up the hill, connecting it with the adjacent San Martino Val-ley and another famous abbey: Pontida. It was here, among the Benedictine community, that on 7 April 1167, representatives of the Lega Lombarda (Lombard League) cities gathered and solemnly swore to defend their freedom against the Emperor Federico Bar-barossa.

Come per Città Alta è Piazza Vecchia, por-ta nuova è il punto focale di Bergamo

Bassa. Si tratta di un ampio passaggio, af-fiancato da due edifici d’impianto neoclassi-co, i Propilei, aperto nell’800 nelle mura medievali (demolite nel 1901) per facilitare l’accesso all’antichissima Fiera di Sant’Ales-sandro che si teneva ogni anno ad agosto. Su questo vasto spazio sorse il nuovo centro di Bergamo, completato nel 1927. Luminoso asse stradale del nuovo centro è il sentiero-ne, la passeggiata dei bergamaschi, sui cui prolungamenti troviamo, ad est, la Via Tasso e, a ovest, la Via XX Settembre, al centro di un’animatissima area commerciale.In Via Tasso sorgono edifici pubblici di buona qualità costruiti nell’Ottocento. Tra questi il palazzo della provincia (dove sono esposte numerose opere dello scultore bergamasco Giacomo Manzù) e della Prefettura, oltre alla chiesa di santo spirito, con dipinti del Lotto e del Borgognone. Sul Sentierone si affacciano la chiesa di san bartolomeo (con la celebre pala d’altare eseguita nel 1516 da Lorenzo Lotto) e il teatro donizet-ti affiancato dal monumento al grande musi-cista. P orta nuova is the hub of Città Bassa (Lo-wer Bergamo) just as Piazza Vecchia is

heart of Città Alta (Upper Bergamo). This wide gateway, flanked by two neoclassical buil-dings, the Propylaea, was built in the ninete-enth century in the medieval town walls (de-molished in 1901) to facilitate access to the ancient Sant’Alessandro Fair, which was held each year in August. The new centre of Berga-mo, completed in 1927, was built on this vast area. The broad thoroughfare of the new cen-tre is the sentierone, a popular promenade for Bergamo’s inhabitants, which extends to the east along Via Tasso and to the west along Via XX Settembre, the fashionable shopping street.Some well-kept public buildings built in the nineteenth century stand on Via Tasso inclu-ding the provincial authority building (where numerous works by the Bergamask sculptor Giacomo Manzù are displayed), the Prefecture and the church of santo spirito, with paintings by Lotto and Borgognone. The Sentierone is overlooked by both the church of san bartolomeo (housing a fa-mous altar-piece by Lorenzo Lotto dating back to 1516) and the donizetti theatre, flanked by a monument to the great musician. Modern Bergamo developed around this new centre, and some of the old villages that were establi-shed along the principal roads leading to Città Alta from the plains and valleys have been preserved. These places are just as alive today as they ever were, with shops and craft stu-dios, and numerous restaurants, bars and trattorias. Along Via San Tomaso, one of the roads that climb towards Città Alta, stands the ninete-enth-century building housing the accademia carrara and Art Gallery with over two thou-sand masterpieces from the principal Italian and European schools. Opposite the Accade-mia is the modern and contemporary art gallery hosting important shows as well as being the seat of permanent exhibitions. The bernareggi museum of Sacred Art is situa-ted in the nearby Pignolo quarter.

Superata la loggia del palazzo comunale eccoci in un altro spazio, quello della piazza del Duomo sul quale si affacciano la cattedrale, il batti-stero, la cappella dove è sepolto il celebre condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, la basilica romanica di santa maria maggiore, il cui fastoso interno barocco raccoglie un gran nu-mero di opere d’arte. Si va dagli affreschi tre-centeschi alle straordinarie tarsie del coro eseguite su disegni di Lorenzo Lotto, agli arazzi fiamminghi e fiorentini, alla tomba di gaetano donizetti. Proprio la sepoltura del grande musicista offre la traccia per un itinerario tra i luoghi donizettiani fino alla sua casa natale nel borgo di Canale, con la possibilità di scoprire angoli del tutto inediti dell’antica città. Un altro itinerario per conoscere storia e luoghi di Ber-gamo è quello che unisce varie sedi museali: dalla rocca al Museo della Città nell’ex monaste-ro di San Francesco, ai Musei Archeologico e di Scienze Naturali nel complesso della cittadella viscontea.

There are many elements of great interest in this wonderful square inclu-ding the fountain donated by the Venetian podestà alvise contarini; the civic tower built in the XII century; the municipal library building with its white marble façade (built in the seventeenth century as a new town hall), and the palazzo della ragione, dating back to the second half of the XII century. Beyond the loggia of the municipal building is another square, Piazza del Duomo, overlooked by the cathedral, the baptistery, the chapel where the famous condottiere Bartolomeo Col-leoni is entombed, and the Romanesque basi-lica of santa maria maggiore, whose ornate Baroque interior houses a great number of works of art including fourteenth century fre-scoes, extraordinary marquetry panels created from drawings by Lorenzo Lotto, Flemish and Florentine tapestries and the tomb of gaetano donizetti. The tomb of this great musician is the start of an itinerary in discovery of Donizet-ti, which leads through hidden corners of the old town to his birthplace in the Canale quarter. Another itinerary in discovery of Bergamo’s hi-story unites the various museums: the rocca (fortress) museum, the City museum in the former monastery of San Francesco and the Archaeological and Natural History Museum in the complex of the Visconti cittadella.
