The Biblical Definition of “One”by BOB CASEY, preacher
Cornerstone Church of Christ70 Bond Street at Camp Avenue in West Irvine TheWordofGodexpresses this termapproxi-mately 384 times; so, itmust be an all-importantsubject.Thedictionarysaysitthisway,“Beingnoneotherofitskind!” Sadly,manygooutshoppingfortheirreligionslikeasiftheywereatthemeatcounterinsomeshop-pingcenter,choosingwhatevervarietythatmaysuitthemormeettheirsocialneeds.Veryfewinquireofthefaithfulnessofthepreacher’smessage.Afterall,ifhedoesn’tpreachtosuitus,wecanalwaysinsistheseekanewplaceofemployment.Howwouldtheav-eragememberfeelifheorsheweretreatedthesameway? Now,backtoourthoughtconcerningoneness.InGenesis 1:1,“God created the heaven and the earth.”Then inDeuteronomy 6:4, “The LORD our God is one LORD:”AlsosaidbyJesusinMark12:29;thenin1 Corinthians 8:6,“But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.” Then, in John 17:11, Jesus prayed for unityamongall thosewho claimed tobehis, “that they may be one, as we are.”But,dowehaveittoday? Instead, we have diversity and divisions. In 1 Corinthians 1:13, Paul asked, “Is Christ divided?” Well,allyouhavetodowhendrivingdownnearlyanyhighwayinAmericaandyoucanseeitwithoneeyeclosed.Whatwastheproblem?MenweresettingupthemenwhopreachedthesamemessagesaboutChrist. Howsweetitwouldbe,ifallclaimantsofChristi-anitywereliketheseinActs 4:32,They“were of one heart and of one soul:”Howcanthiswrongbemaderight?Read theproblems inRomans10:1-4.Theyappeared religious, butuponexamination,didnot
serveaccordingtowhatwastaughtbyJesus.Whatdidtheydoinstead?TheywentaboutestablishingtheirownformsofreligionbutwerenotsubmittingtotallytothewilloftheLord.ReadMatthew7:21-25.SeeifIhaveitright. Again, notice Paul’s writing in 1 Corinthians 12:13,“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body,”calledTheChurchinColossians1:18.Noticein Matthew 16:13-18, Jesus asked the question,“Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?”Theyansweredinthesamemannermenareansweringtoday;saying,IamaWesleyan,aBaptist,aNazarene,aPentecostal,aChurch,etc.Thelistwouldcoverthetotalityofthespaceif itwerewritten.IsthiswhatChristdiedfor?NoticeinEphesians 5:23-26,“Christ is the head of the church . . .”HesolovedhischurchthathewenttoCalvarytopreserveittohimself.AndhedoessobysettingitapartfromtheotherchurchesoftheworldbywashingofwaterbytheWord.(Gala-tians3:27) Oncemore,noticeEphesians 4:4-6,“There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.” But,isthatwhatwehaveinAmer-ica?No,evenhereinEstillwehavedivisiononeveryhand,andthedevilrejoicesinit.Heisdoinghisbestworkthroughdivision! Insummary,IbelievethatitishightimethatwefollowtheApostles.NoticeinPhilippians 3:14-16,“I press toward the mark for the prize of the high call-ing of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you. He had anunswerving belief thatpeople needed God tospeak to them directlythrough His Word andthe songs they sangduringtimesofworshipathome.Thiswasnotanew idea, but one thathaditsbeginningsintheearliest worship of theLord.MusicandGod’sWordhave always been avery important ingredi-ent in worship. Whenthereisjoyintheheartsof the faithful, praisingGodisanaturalpartoflife and is always evi-dentintimesofworship.
WithshameandsorrowthecaptivesofBabylonadmitted this in Psalm137:4. As their captorsridiculedthemforittheysaid,“Howcanwesingthe songs of the Lordwhileinaforeignland?”Sin separated themfromGodandtheylostthejoyoftheirsalvation.Itwilldothesametous. In theOldTestamentwefindmanyoccasionsof God’s children com-ingtogethertosingandshout and praise theLord.InPsalm95:1the“worshipleader” lookedatthecrowdbeforehimand said let’s “sing forjoy to the Lord; let usshoutaloudtotheRockof our salvation.” Thatinvitation remains opentoustoday. WhenwepauseandponderthegraceofGodinsavingusandbecom-ingour“Rock”-ouronlysourceofsafetyandse-curityintimesoftrialandtemptation, defeat anddespair - it’s time to liftourvoicesinworship. Visitusat:
