The Estill County Tribune, December 16, 2015, Page 7 It never ceases to amaze me how something as sim- ple as the smell of cookies and gingerbread baking can evoke such vivid childhood memories. The aroma of warm gingerbread fills the air like spicy holiday pot- pourri. When I was a young girl I loved to watch my mother mix the dough to make bis- cuits, gingerbread, and pie crusts in her wooden dough bowl that she inherited from her mother. Every Christmas, she made a variety of pies, jam cakes, fruit cakes, ginger- bread, and sugar cookies. She always made biscuits everyday with a pinch of this and a handful of that; like most cooks in those days. Times Remembered Betty A. Young [email protected] Sweet Smell of Cookies Baking Visit Our Website At <EstillTribune.Com> For Up-To-Date Obituaries Illiteracy, or an Unwillingness to Learn by BOB CASEY, preacher Cornerstone Church of Christ Bond Street at Camp Avenue in West Irvine Hardly does a year pass that we do not hear of some- one in a religious meeting who is bitten by a poisonous snake of some kind. Now I grant you that this, normal- ly, takes place in one of our counties that are noted as a place where many are lacking a formal education of some kind. Sadly, some do die from the handling and being bitten by these serpents, still they do it anyway. Some have even attempted to drink chemicals of differ- ent types, saying that this is a test of their faith. Some have even been seen pouring lighter fluid in their hands and igniting it, again claiming that this is a demonstra- tion if one has the faith or not. Many use the Bible passage found in Mark 6 to pro- vide information for their actions. But under the exami- nation of this passage, take note whom the Lord is speak- ing unto? Notice verses 14 and 15 very clearly mention the eleven apostles. Matthias, who would be chosen later was not in the group at this time, but was included by the Lord later on. After giving these apostles the com- mission to God unto all the world and preach the gospel, baptize the believers. Then he said of the apostles, here are some signs that will demonstrate that you have been sent by me. They would cast out demons (Luke 10:7), speaking with new tongues (Acts 2:4-6), they shall take up serpents (Acts 25:3-6). This did not indicate that they were to search the rocks and hills to find deadly vipers and to bring them into their worship. The hills of Judea possessed many kinds of vipers and so great care was to be taken to avoid them, but if an un- intentional bite had taken place it would not bother them. Water was scarce and to drink from just any thing was dangerous. Many pools were filled with deadly larvae and other stupifying things that might kill the careless drinker, but if this accidently happened to one or more of the apostles it was not to bother them. They had the power to lay hands upon the sick and could recover their health (Acts 3). All these were signs given by our Lord to his apostles only! If handling a big diamond back rat- tler was a test of my faith then I would not have any at all! Because my Lord tests my faith by what he has told me in His word. If I am willing to obey it (John 15:9- 10, Luke 11:28). Now if someone were to teach this to a person who was uneducated, who believed that to take up serpents was a command from our Lord, what could we say to convince him otherwise? First, I would ask him if he considered himself to be an apostle. If so, who gave you this appointment? Can you heal a blind man? Can you raise the dead? Of course the answer is no! Now, illiteracy is to be to blame for a lot of this confusion, but when one is plainly taught bet- ter, what should he do? Lay aside the traditions of oth- ers and plainly obey wholly our Lord and what common sense teaches us. That to drink poison or grab hold of a venomous snake can kill you. Do not tempt our Lord! Sincerely, Bob Casey, 1-859-369-4165 Jimmie L. Johnson, DMD, PSC Family Dentistry 87 Wildwood Place (off Court St.) Irvine, Kentucky ( 606 ) 723-3213 “You are not prepared to live,” said the profes- sor to his philosophy class, “until you are ready to die.” Few, if any, live with that thought in mind. When he was twenty years old, David was di- agnosed with cancer. Af- ter a careful examination the attending physician said to him, “I’m sorry, but you have only a short time to live. At the most, two years.” David took the news without flinching. He had accepted Christ as his Savior six months before he was given the news. As the disease pro- gressed and his health deteriorated his faith con- tinued to grow. And as his faith grew so did his will- ingness to witness and he gained a boldness about sharing God’s grace. On one occasion he said, “Cancer brought me to my knees and I realized I had no control over my life.” During a visit with one of his physicians he was asked, “Do you want to live a short time for God or a long time for noth- ing?” He responded by saying, “Whether I live a short time or a long time it will be for God. My life is in His hands.” Shortly before his death his mother would walk into his room and ask, “David, are you still here?” Each time he would answer, “Yes, Mother. I’m still here.” On the last day of his life she went into his room and asked, “David are you still here?” His reply that day was, “Yes, Mother, but not for much longer. I’m going home.” He looked around the room and said, “Mother, faith is a lighted room.” Where does a faith like David=s come from? “God will redeem my life from the grave,” said the Psalmist, “he will surely take me to Himself.” It comes from faith in Christ. David lived his life know- ing he was ready to die. Sunday, December 20th, 11am, 5pm Christmas Schedule At Wisemantown She would roll and shape the dough quickly and easily to form the dough for each. Mom let me help mix the ingredients for the sugar cookies and gingerbread and cut them out for baking. When they were baking and cooled I put sprinkles and ic- ing on them and decorated them for Christmas. As the years went by, and when my mom passed I in- herited the dough bowl that I cherished so much. Every Christmas I use that bowl and remember those days when I watched mom prepare for all her baking. My dough never seems to act like hers; I still don’t get the dough thin like she could. I loved that old dough bowl; it has many memories. It was and is a symbol to me of pleasant sights, tastes, and togetherness. In my mind, I can see my mom at the kitchen cabinet, mixing in- gredients for baking. I get more pleasure from using the dough bowl and I hope my daughter will some- day make biscuits, cookies and gingerbread men for her children. She doesn’t have little girls; only one boy. He comes to my house and makes sugar cookies with me every Christmas. Maybe he will pass it on to his little girl if he has one. GINGERBREAD ½ c. butter ½ c, raisins 1 c. molasses ½ c. sugar 1 tsp. salt 1 c. boiling water ½ tsp. cloves 1 tsp. baking powder 2 eggs, well beaten 1 tsp. ginger 1 tsp. cinnamon Cream butter and sugar together. Mix molasses and water together and add to the butter mixture. Sift dry in- gredients together. Add dry ingredients to butter mixture a little at a time, stirring well after each addition. Add eggs and blend. Stir in raisins. Pour into greased pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30- 40 minutes.
